Chapter 61: Birthday

KO One Re-Live

Yu Jing sighed as she returned home that night. She sighed because she knew she would have to go back to Xiao Yu's apartment before it got too late or he would worry about her. She grumbled, irritated, as she walked down the stairs to a basement. She opened a door that led to her father's laboratory. She saw him wearing his mask as he worked with some sort of chemical and a weird looking tube. She followed the tube with her eyes and it led to a tall cylindrical chamber that was half filled with a transparent jelly. Several wires came out of a body inside the chamber and Yu Jing recognised the figure to be Jiang Yu Yan.

He mouth curved downwards and she walked over to her father, "Jiang Yu Yan is still alive?" she asked, almost disgusted.
Her father didn't look at her as he continued to work, "I found a use for her. I'm just returning her original DNA to her and reversing all the changes I made to her physical body," he explained with his eyes focused on his tablet that controlled a large coil of holographic DNA behind a glass screen.
Yu Jing frown deepened, "You're still going through with the life force transfer with Jiang Yu Yan?" she asked, gritting her teeth, "But I thought I was going to do that!"
He laughed, "Jiang Yu Yan may have betrayed me but her life is in my hands so she has no choice but to do it. You're useless compared to her, you're not fit for the job," he answered her in a cold tone, still not batting an eyelash in her direction.
Pissed off, she scowled. "That's not fair," she muttered before remembering what had happened to Ye Zi. "Didn't you also say that Ye Zi was fit for his job, how did he then get taken over by the demon tattooed pan?" she questioned.

Her father looked up and dusted his hands with a sigh. He then turned to her, "Since you're new in this household, I will let you off for questioning me. But know that you can't speak like that to me or I will destroy you," he threatened, "And Jiang Ye Zi is of no concern to me. I don't care what happens to him, Zhong Ji Yi Ban can handle him if they want," he spat.
"But he's your brother in law-"
"He was a pawn that was willing to be a pawn," he hissed, "Now get lost and go back to that Ding Xiao Yu. What are you even doing here?!"

Yu Jing bit her lip, swallowing down her anger before she turned around to leave.

Yu Jing held a sheet of lyrics of the duet she was going to sing with Xiao Yu. She huffed, feeling annoyed, "I can't even sing," she grumbled, before she heard a knock on the door. Xiao Yu slowly walked in with a mug of warm milk and as soon as she saw him, Yu Jing quickly scrunched up the paper and stuffed it into her pocket. "What do you want?" she spat.
Xiao Yu looked at her weirdly before setting down the mug on the bedside table, "What are you doing?" he asked.
"I was just practising the duet," she replied, avoiding his gaze.
"Oh," he nodded in understanding, "I've brought you a cup of milk. Do you want to practise together before bed?" he suggested.
"No," she burst out, "I want to practise alone, I don't know all the lyrics yet."

Xiao Yu frowned, "Are you avoiding me?" he slowly asked.
"Why would you say that?" Yu Jing asked with a raised eyebrow. She leaned over for the mug and began drinking.
"Because although we're all busy with festival preparations, I don't see you much even though we are performing together," he explained, looking over at the window, "At lunch time you eat with Wu Xiong and barely even talk to me at school. We live together but you always leave so early in the morning and come home so late at night," he carried on before turning on his heel to look her right in the eye. The two made eye contact and stared into each other's eyes. "And the thing that hurts me the most is that," he paused and gazed into her orbs, noticing her dark brown irises that look more realistic than Yu Yan's glass eyes that were like doll eyes. "You haven't even called me 'Little Fish' once this whole week," he finished before Da Yu prowled into the room and walked between his legs. He bent down and picked him up, him, "You haven't called Da Dong 'Golden Monkey' either," he added, "Is something wrong? Have we done something to offend you?"

Yu Jing's mouth parted into an 'o' shape as she continued to stare at Xiao Yu, dumfounded. Yu Ting, you little sneak! How dare you not tell me something so important like this?! You traitor! Yu Jing smiled nervously, pushing down that fuming fire in her heart, "I just felt like... those names were too childish..." she stammered, Jiang Yu Yan, how could you be so immature and come up with such nicknames?
"Childish?" Xiao Yu repeated, "But why are you avoiding me?"
"I'm not," she defended, "I just need some space and wanted to make other friends," she lied.
"Oh okay..." he sighed, "Will you come to my piano competition tomorrow? It's the quarter-finals tomorrow," he explained, hopefully.
Yu Jing sighed.
"Da Dong and Ya Se are coming too," he added in attempt to persuade her.
Yu Jing rolled her eyes, "Sure," she muttered.

"Xiao Yu, you're so amazing!" Da Dong exclaimed as they walked towards to Zhong Ji Yi Ban, after the quarter-finals.
"Not really, there were so many other great pianists," Xiao Yu muttered as Da Dong swung an arm around his shoulders.
"Xiao Yu, stop being so humble okay? You were one of the five people out of 20 that got through to the semi-finals! Aren't you awesome?" Ya Se questioned.
"He's amazing right Yu Yan?" Da Dong asked.
"Why are we going to Zhong Ji Yi Ban?" Yu Jing spat in response.
"To celebrate Xiao Yu with everyone," Ya Se replied, "Didn't you like his performance?"
"Why would I?" Yu Jing asked, "I hate pianos," she spat.
The three boys fell silent and looked at her, confused. "But I thought you loved listening to Xiao Yu play the piano?" Da Dong asked, glancing over at Xiao Yu's hurt face.
Yu Jing clenched her teeth at the thought of Yu Ting who didn't tell her once again, Yu Ting, what the hell do you think you're doing?!
"Well not anymore!" she spat at them, pushing past them and into Zhong Ji Yi Ban's classroom.

As soon as she entered the dark room, the lights switched on and a loud 'Happy Birthday!' burst out of everyone's mouth. Yu Jing was showered in party poppers, streamers and balloons. Confused, she looked around at all the students of Zhong Ji Yi Ban who were there after school hours. "Uh..." she stuttered, "What's going on?"
"Happy Birthday Jiang Yu Yan!" Da Dong exclaimed, pulling a party popper in her face, "I know you don't like party poppers but let this be a one off, it's a day to celebrate! It’s PARTY TIME!"
"It's my birthday...?" Yu Jing asked, confused, looking around.

She Jie huffed with a party hat on her head, "Look, just act surprised and happy okay?! I took time out of my life just for you so act grateful Ugly Jiang!" she snapped.
It's Jiang Yu Yan's birthday? Yu Ting why didn't you tell me?! Yu Jing smiled faintly, "Thanks everyone," she said. Suddenly, Da Dong sprayed something in her face and then handed her the 'Shine Shine Shine, Please Be Mine' perfume bottle, "Happy Birthday! I didn't know what to get you so I bought you perfume!" he explained, "Narcissist bought all the food and decorations," he continued to talk and talk but at that moment, Xiao Yu and Yu Jing suddenly felt their hearts beating faster and faster as a result of the special perfume. They locked eyes and unconsciously, stood closer together with giddy smiles popping onto their faces. Their heart pounded and they felt their emotions grow out of control. Xiao Yu became too shy to even look at Yu Jing and thankfully, Hong Guang came in to divert everyone's attention.

He walked in with a large cake while singing the happy birthday song. Everyone one sang along to wish Yu Jing a happy birthday and she smiled happily - not because of the birthday party but because of her strong newfound feelings for Ding Xiao Yu. The four boys wished her a happy birthday before Jin Bao San brought in a large hot pot.
"Hot pot and birthday cake?" Yu Jing laughed. She didn't know why she was in such a good mood. Everyone thought she was Yu Yan who was happy on her special day, but in reality she was only feeling so good because of her rushing emotions that were under the effect of the Shine, Shine, Please Be Mine perfume.

The next hour or so was spent by eating and playing silly games together, it was genuinely just an evening of fun for the students of Zhong Ji Yi Ban and Yu Jing actually did have a pretty good time. Xiao Yu sat at the back of the classroom, where all the desks and chairs had been moved to. He looked down at his wrist where he wore a dark blue starry shamballa-like bracelet that had a small star on each end. He smiled as he opened his fist revealing a similar one but in pink.

"When are you going to give that to her?" Ya Se's voiced piped up, startling him.
Xiao Yu looked up at him with a light blush, "I'm not sure, I'm really nervous," he muttered quietly, looking over at Yu Jing.
Da Dong walked over to them with a piece of meat in his mouth, "You're going to confess right?" he asked eagerly. Xiao Yu nodded in response.
"Then hurry up," Ya Se urged, "Take her away somewhere you'll be alone!"
Looking down, Xiao Yu sighed, "I'm scared about rejection," he mumbled.
"Jia you Xiao Yu!" Da Dong cheered, "If you don't have confidence in yourself, how will you ever know what she feels about you?"
"Egomaniac's right," Ya Se agreed, "Give it a shot, we'll be with you every step of the way."
"Can I really confess to her...?" he whispered, looking at Yu Jing with almost sad longing eyes.
Ya Se and Da Dong pushed him out of his seat, "Jia you!" they exclaimed, pushing him towards Yu Jing who approached them.

Xiao Yu stumbled forwards, in front of her.
"Are you okay?" she asked him.
"Yu Yan..." he began nervously, "Can you come with me somewhere?"
Yu Jing smiled, "Sure, lead the way."
Xiao Yu smiled at her and the two walked out of the classroom quietly.
Da Dong and Ya Se high fived each other and quietly tip toed after them.

Xiao Yu and Yu Jing went outside and stood on the grassy area outside Zhong Ji Yi Ban. "Hey Yu Yan," he began, turning his back to her, "Do you know this place's significance?" he asked quietly.
Yu Jing smiled and shook her head, "Isn't it just a patch of grass?"
"It's where I first spent time with you alone," he replied, "The classroom was too loud for us so we came out here."
Yu Jing slowly nodded, "Oh... right..."
"And you caught me staring at you," he added with a small chuckle, "I guess I really was staring at you."
"....why?" Yu Jing asked, not knowing that Da Dong, Ya Se and even Hong Guang were hiding in a corner, eavesdropping.
Xiao Yu took in a deep breath before he exhaled, "I'm not entirely sure why," he admitted, "You were just an intriguing character and slowly I felt drawn to you..." he trailed off as he turned around to look at her. A blush spread across his cheeks as he felt his words stuck in his throat. "Yu Yan I-.... I never thought we'd become good friends honestly... but I began to like you more and more.... and I know you probably don't feel the same way I do but I have to tell you to put my heart at ease," he took in a deep breath, "Jiang Yu Yan, I like you," he breathed, confidently, "No, I love you," he corrected as an effect of the perfume.

Yu Jing gasped and her heart fluttered furiously. Her heart began to pain because the one Xiao Yu liked was Jiang Yu Yan and not her. She liked him even though she didn't know where the sudden feelings came from but the one he liked wasn't her and that hurt her. Although she knew that she couldn't have any romantic relationships, the evil within her began stirring and a smirk bloomed on her face as an idea snuck into her mind. "Xiao Yu..." she began slowly.
"Yu Yan, I know you're blind but I don't care. I really do truly like you and I don't want to let this chance slip by," Xiao Yu interrupted.
"I like you too," Yu Jing purposely announced, causing Xiao Yu's eyes to widen.
"W-what...?" he stuttered, surprised as his brothers squealed like fangirls in the background.
"Little Fish, I feel the same way!" Yu Jing beamed with a bright smile.
"Really?" Xiao Yu asked in a quiet voice.
Yu Jing nodded with a small giggle.

Happiness rushed over Xiao Yu and he pulled her into a tight embrace, holding onto her tightly. "Happy Birthday, Jiang Yu Yan," he whispered as he buried his head into her hair. Yu Jing looked up at his face from his embrace, looking deep into his eyes. Xiao Yu felt his heart pound against his ribcage as he leaned into her face when she tilted her chin slightly upwards, giving him permission to kiss her. He tilted his head slightly to the side and their faces neared and the gap between their lips got smaller and smaller. Yu Jing closed her eyes, inwardly smirking. Ding Xiao Yu, I have you now. I'm going to destroy you from the inside, she laughed in her head.

Xiao Yu gently pressed his lips against hers and the two kissed.
