Chapter 10: Confusion

KO One Re-Live

Xiao Yu sat in his desk quietly, still baffled as to why and how he managed to play piano for so long for Jiang Yu Yan. He wasn't the type of person to do that so why did he? He didn't do such a thing for An Qi so why Yu Yan of all people? Was it because he felt sorry for her? She didn't want his pity so he didn't need to show it. He arrived late to class that day and Tian Xin and Da Dong had asked why as he was not the type to miss class. Still in a daze he had responded with a simple "Sorry" and continued to stare off into space. He couldn't take any notes, he couldn't hear what was being taught and he didn't know how he felt.

He reflected back on that moment when his body just moved on its own and his fingers began to push the piano keys on instinct. He replayed the moment when he had stolen glances at Yu Yan who was deeply submerged in her daydream, her peaceful face and her warm aura entranced him and he didn't have the heart to stop playing. As he played he had felt a connection with her through the musical notes and he felt as though only the two of them could understand the meaning behind the song he played. He felt close to her. He felt as if he could understand her and her pain. It was then when he was sure that Jiang Yu Yan could be a nice person, she was just waiting for someone to enter her world and break down the wall that was keeping her away from everyone else - he wanted to be the axe that tore down that wall and return her to her friends and family.

His heart was conflicted and confused - he had just met her so what could he have been feeling? It wasn't love, no; he crossed that off the list. He barely knew her and only exchanged a few conversations with her; it wasn't enough to fall in love. Romantic feelings needed time to develop so there was no way he was falling in love, right?

He then thought about sympathy: was it sympathy that he was feeling? Did he want to help her? But did such a cold and rude person need sympathy? No, he shook his head as he thought to himself; Jiang Yu Yan wasn't cold or rude, well perhaps not intentionally. She was just bad with people and lacked communication skills that would allow her to get on with people. But she didn't want friends so there was no need for him to defend her on this point.

He inwardly groaned, what exactly was he feeling? What was it? It was going to drive him mad.

"Xiao Yu!" Ya Se hissed in a whispering tone, rather aggressively. But Xiao Yu was too deep in thought to hear anyone but his own thoughts. Ya Se sighed, he had tried to get his friend's attention for a long time now but why was he not able to hear? Xiao Yu was normally so attentive in class but today he looked as though he was lost but stressed at the same time. His friend was acting strangely and he would have to ask him what was going on after school. First, he had run off when they had been going to school; second, he had missed the whole of the first period and was late; third, he was completely out of it. Ding Xiao Yu never behaved like this and it was worrying.

Da Dong looked over at his two friends with similar thoughts. He was about to call out his name when Jiang Yu Yan walked into the classroom. As soon as she slumped into her chair which was directly in front of Xiao Yu, he broke out of his train of thoughts and looked up at her. So it's something to do with Jiang Yu Yan, both Da Dong and Ya Se thought simultaneously. They were definitely going to ask him about it later.

Xiao Yu however, could not focus properly for the rest of the school day. Yu Yan was too much of a distraction. It wasn't that he couldn't keep his eyes off her, it was that she kept moving around in her seat and changing positions every so often out of boredom and occasionally she would rock on her chair. Because she sat in front of him, it was hard not to see her.

~*~*~

Jin Bao San, Da La, Xiao La and Sha Yu were returning from a restaurant after school. The sun was setting and the friends were being their usual rowdy selves on the streets.

"Bao San Ge, this street is cursed!" Sha Yu exclaimed, "This is the street where Classmates Liang Zhi and Xia Ba lost their battle points! We should hurry and leave."
Jin Bao San hit his head, "Nonsense! No one would dare attack me!" he boasted, "There's nothing to be afraid of with me here!"
"But Bao San Ge," Da La began slowly, "You don't have any battle points, didn't you buy your KO Rank?"
"That's right so there's nothing to take from you!" Xiao La added.
"So we can feed you to the dogs if we get attacked!" Sha Yu pointed out.

"Shut up!" Jin Bao San exclaimed, hit all three of their heads, "I have lots to take! I have my high intelligence and my handsome looks - I'm in just as much danger as you are but I'm not scared!"
"Hey, isn't that Jiang Yu Yan?" Sha Yu asked suddenly, pointing to a girl across the road.

The four of them looked to see a girl with short black hair in two low pig tails skipping down the street. Curious, they followed after her. "Wei, Classmate Jiang Yu Yan!" Jin Bao San called, now only a few metres away from her. But she did not reply.
"Hey, do you not hear me calling you?!" he continued yelling, before putting a hand on her shoulder. Instantly, she turned around whacking whoever was behind her.

Jin Bao San tumbled to the floor with a red hand printed onto the front of his face, "Was there a reason to hit me?" he asked in pain.
The boys looked at her; she looked exactly like Jiang Yu Yan but just a few years younger. In was a large and circular, yellow lollipop. Upon seeing what she had done, she cried out, "Oh I'm so sorry, are you okay, Uncle?!"
"Uncle?!" Bao San repeated, "Classmate Jiang, we're in the same class! I'm not an uncle!" he whined, still rubbing his face.
"Ah, I'm sorry," she said once again, "I got scared, I thought you were a ert!" She smiled at the boys, with playfulness shining through her eyes. "How may I help you?" she asked.
"We were just wondering what you were doing," Xiao La explained.
"This street is cursed so you should be careful, especially since you're blind." Sha Yu added.
"Oh," She smiled, "Thanks for your concern. Lollipop?" She took out the lollipop in and held it out towards them.

Jin Bao San stood up and shook his head with slight disgust, "We're fine."
"It's because it was in my mouth right?" she asked with a warm smile before pulling out four multi-coloured lollipops from her sleeve, "Here you go!"
The four males were stunned by her magic trick and stared at the lollipops, deciding which one to take.

"Classmate Jin, you should take the grey and white one," she suggested, "It's a stupid colour but matches your stupidity so you go well together!" She smiled a toothy grin before Jin Bao San realised what she had just said. His followers laughed before all four began choking on the lollipops which she had thrown into their mouths. The four of them became a mess of coughs and wheezes and by the time they had stopped, the girl was gone.

"Where'd she go?" one of them asked and Sha Yu shrugged.
The stood in silence as they processed what had just happened and then they became confused.
"Is Jiang Yu Yan really blind?" Da La asked.
"Of course she is! She said her eyes are fake!" Xiao La responded.
"But she knew the colour of the lollipops!" Da La replied, "She looked at us as though she could see!"
"But why would she lie?" Jin Bao San asked.
"She's not who she says she is!" Sha Yu exclaimed, "This street really is cursed, weird things keep happening!"
"And she was all cute and smiley, Jiang Yu Yan is as cold as ice at school!" Xiao La pointed out, "Does she have some sort of double personality?"
"Do we tell Dong Ge?" Da La asked, "If Jiang Yu Yan is lying about her sight then that's really suspicious!"

Jin Bao San hit them, "You're crazy! We have to investigate this ourselves!" he yelled, "Or Dong Ge won't give me any credit! If I present to him evidence about Jiang Yu Yan being a faker then I might be able to become the leader of Zhong Ji Yi Ban as a reward!" He then laughed to himself, imagining himself on a throne with Da Dong kneeling before him and with Jiang Yu Yan locked up in a corner.
"HAHAHAHAHA!" he laughed, "AHAHAHAHAHA!" he laughed again, "AAAAAAHAHHAHAHAHAHHAA!"
Creeped out, his followers backed away.
