Author’s Point of View

Eunjung made herself at home in the corner fartherst from the door inside the room. She hadn’t stopped crying since Trent brought her to the room and couldn’t speak when Trent had asked her if she was okay. Trent hadn’t locked the door either, only closing it. Eunjung couldn’t stop sobbing even after the pain subdued to a small stinging. It wasn’t the slap that caused her to cry, but the overwhelming fear she felt.

“Eonni, what do I do? I’m so scared. Is this how you and I will finally meet again?” Eunjung sobbed, calling out to the sister she remembered months ago. Her hand felt empty without the ring.

“Eonni, I’m so scared.” Eunjung choked out as hugged herself tightly, trying to get warm. The house was drafty and her pants were thin along with her sweater.

Eunjung whimpered when she heard footsteps getting close to the door and tightly shut her eyes as she made herself smaller. She prayed in her mind, partially praying for her life to end quickly and painlessly, and partially praying that it wasn’t Keith or Colette.

“Eunjung, I brought you blanket. I thought you might be cold.” Eunjung opened her eyes and saw Trent poking his head into the room, a thick blanket under his arm. Eunjung sat up straight but kept her arms wrapped around her.

“Thank you.” Eunjung said quietly as Trent walked in and handed the blanket to Eunjung. She took it and wrapped it around her, warming up instantly.

“Dylan wants to know if you need an ice pack for your face.” Eunjung shook her head, hugging the blanket tighter around her. Trent looked like he was about to leave to tell Dylan, Eunjung guessed, when Dylan walked in with an a wad of napkins and an plastic sandwhich back with ice.

“She said she didn’t need it.” Trent told Dylan.

“I didn’t come here for nothing so you better take it. Your face will swell more if you don’t use it either.” Dylan grumbled, handing the make shift icepack to Eunjung with the wad of napkins. Eunjung took the icepack from him and pressed it to her cheek. She flinched at the cold but got used to it. Eunjung thanked Dylan for the icepack before adverting her eyes.

“Also, I found this. I figured you’d want it back.” Dylan stuffed his hand into his pocket and pulled it back out, only to reveal Eunjung’s wedding ring. Eunjung’s eyes brightened at the sight of the ring. Even though she didn’t pick it out, didn’t mean she’d want it to go missing. It was her wedding ring, after all. Eunjung held her hand out, Dylan dropping the ring so it landed in her palm.

“Thank you both, so much.” Eunjung sincerely thanked.

“It’s nothing.” Dylan brushed away her thanks while Trent became a little bashful.

It was quiet amongst the three, an awkward silence enveloping the three. Dylan gestured for Trent to follow him so the two could leave Eunjung alone in the room. Eunjung nearly jumped up to stop them.

“Don’t go. Please.” Eunjung begged. Even though the two had been the ones to grab her off the street, didn’t mean they were bad. They were obviously better people than Keith and Colette.

“Uh, but we could get in trouble if they don’t see us.” Trent awkwardly said.

“Why would you get in trouble? You can say you two were just keeping an eye on me. I don’t want to be alone.” Eunjung didn’t care how pitiful she sounded, she just didn’t want to be left alone in the room.

Trent and Dylan exchanged a look before Dylan sighed. “You can stay with her. I don’t think they’d like the both of us to stay.” Dylan said before leaving the room. Trent smiled at Eunjung who smiled a small smile back. She was relieved that she wouldn’t be alone.

“I don’t think I know your name.” Eunjung quietly said as Trent sat across from her.

“My full name is Nicholas Trent Tucker but everyone calls me Trent. And yours?” Trent knew her name was Eunjung but they weren’t formally introduced.

“Eunjung Kim, is my full name.” Eunjung told him, her voice staying soft. hurt from the crying and felt dry so she was trying to keep from making it hurt worse.

“You’re…Korean?” Trent guessed. Eunjung nodded her head.

“I was born and raised in Seoul and this is my first time living somewhere else.” Eunjung explained. Trent nodded his head, finding it cool that she lived in a foreign country.

“Why did you move here to Washington D.C.?” Trent wondered.

“College. I got a, uh, a scholarship for Georgetown University so my husband and I moved here. He wanted to get me away from Seoul too and felt this was a good opportunity for us.” Eunjung looked down, playing with the ring in her hand.

“How did you and your husband meet? You seem really young to be married. How old are you?” Eunjung couldn’t help but smile at Trent’s almost childlike curiosity.

“It’s kind of complicated but I’m 18. Our parents arranged for us to be married after I graduated high school. He’s one of my brother’s best friends so he wasn’t a complete stranger.” Trent tilted his head. “So you two aren’t in love or…?” Eunjung couldn’t help but giggle at this.

“We are, believe it or not. Since him and I didn’t know each other, his mother felt that it would be best for him and I to live together to get to know each other better. We got along at first because we had a common enemy but as time went on, him and I became actual friends and I guess we just fell for each other sometime along the way.” Eunjung shyly explained, feeling like a school girl.

“Oooo! Tell me more! What’s his name?” Trent wondered, grinning at the story.

“San Yoon. He’s…he’s a real sweet guy. Pretty awkward too. He has this bad habit of not wearing his glasses so his eyes get tired and he starts blinking a lot but it’s even worse when he’s nervous.” Eunjung giggled. Trent smiled even wider.

“Why doesn’t he like to wear glasses?” Eunjung rolled her eyes playfully. “Because he doesn’t like how he looks. I think he looks fine with them so now he only wears them when him and I are at home.” Trent took notice at the light in Eunjung’s eyes as she talked about Yoonsan.

“He can’t wear contacts?” Trent suggested. Eunjung shook her head.

“His eyes get really red and they make him uncomfortable.” Trent ‘ahhed’. Eunjung told Trent about Yoonsan’s music and his architecture job that his mom got him when they moved to Washington D.C. Trent talked about how Dylan wanted to become a chef and that prompted Eunjung to tell him about Sooyoung which lead to Eunjung telling him about their friends back in South Korea.

The conversation ended up with Eunjung explaining everything in detail (excluding Colette and Keith), including Hyeonsu and Eunjung’s relationship with their parents. Eunjung isn’t entirely sure how the conversation got there, but it ended up with her and Trent both crying and trying to use the waded up napkins from the icepack to wipe their tears. Trent got visibly happy when Eunjung told him that her and Moonkyu recently made up and were working to becoming close again. The conversation took them far into the night. Dylan only came in to leave a large flashlight and more food.

“I don’t understand why they paid us to kidnap you. You’ve been through so much and you and your husband deserve to be happy.” Trent sniffled.

“They’re jealous.” Eunjung handed Trent another napkin so he could blow his nose. Eunjung finally decided to explain how she knew Colette and Keith and once she finished, Trent looked visibly disturbed.

“This isn’t right. Dylan, we, we need to get you out of here. They’re obviously crazy.” Trent stood up and moved to help Eunjung up.

“We’ll get you out of here, Eunjung, don’t worry.” Trent pulled Eunjung to the door but they stopped when they heard the front door slam open and Colette’s frantic voice and Keith’s angry voice were heard. Trent pushed Eunjung back from the door.

“Stay here, I’ll see what’s wrong. We’re going to get you out of her, Eunjung.” Trent promised before leaving the room, closing the door behind him.

Eunjung stayed still as she listened to Colette and Keith. Colette sounded like she was panicking while Keith sounded like he was trying to console her but at the same time, figure out what was wrong.

“This wasn’t supposed to happen! He was supposed to become mine!” Colette screeched.

“Calm down and tell me what’s wrong. What happened at the meeting?” Eunjung was pressing her ear to the door, trying to listen clearly.

“Is everything okay?” She heard Dylan wonder.

“San knows everything and they had the place ing wired! We’re going to get caught and he said he hated me. He hates me and it’s that ’s fault!” Colette screamed.

“Shut up! Don’t talk about her like that!” Eunjung flinched at Keith’s yell.

“I hit him with a ing car! He tried chasing after me when I ran away and I hit him with a car!” Eunjung gasped at this and found her hand reaching for the doorknob. She ripped the door open and stormed out of the room until she was grabbing Colette and forcefully turning her so she faced her.

“What did you do to my husband?! What did you do?!” Eunjung yelled, gripping Colette’s upper arms as she shook her. Yoonsan got hit by a car and it was Colette’s fault. She had bad luck with cars and was scared Yoonsan was seriously injured. Her entrance surprised everyone but Colette quickly realized who she was and shoved Eunjung away before grabbing her and throwing her to the floor. Eunjung hit her head hard and let out a groan.

“He’s not yours! He’s mine! He was never yours, you took him away from me!” Colette screeched before harshly kicking Eunjung in the stomach. Keith tore Colette away while Trent hurried to pick up the now drowsy Eunjung.

“I’m sorry! I forgot to lock her door. I’m sorry, I’m sorry!” Trent apologized. Keith ordered him to take her back to the room which he did. When Trent took her back to the room, he laid her down and covered her with the blanket.

“Please be okay, Eunjung. Your husband will want you to be okay.” Trent whispered as he checked Eunjung’s head. He’d need to sneak in sometime soon to take care of the injury. Trent didn’t trust Keith one bit, not after what he found out.

Eunjung was slipping in and out of consciousness but she fought hard to stay away. Sleep sounded lovely though but she was scared because she didn’t know if she had a concussion and sleep was bad with a concussion. Eunjung could’ve sworn she heard Hyeonsu telling her to close her eyes though and her sister never steered her wrong when she was alive so why would she now? Maybe this was how she was going to die, was the last thing she thought before closing her eyes.
