Chapter 26
Rain On MeA week after that incident, and Yoonsan still wasn’t really talking to me. Colette was also around a lot more, especially at the house. She’s come over for dinner a couple times as well. Those dinners were so awkward for me because Yoonsan and Colette would just talk to each other in French and there was only so much that I knew. I had made it my mission to learn French after I went to the hospital and was learning it pretty fast but I wasn’t close to being fluent. I usually had my phone with me and texted either Edward or someone when Colette came for dinner. The only thing I was thankful for was that when Colette was over, we had dinner in the dining room and not at the table in the kitchen. I can’t explain it but the smaller dining table I felt should just be for Yoonsan and I. It made everything feel more domestic and I’ve come to enjoy that between Yoonsan and I.
It was another awkward dinner and again, I was on my phone while Colette and Yoonsan talked and laughed about a mutual friend of their’s. That’s all that I could pick up on. Sadly, Edward and the people I usually text were all busy so I was just scrolling through my Instagram feed. I jumped when I heard the doorbell ring. A maid went to go and answer the door, Yoonsan and Colette having not noticed.
“Master Yoon, Miss Eunjung, you have company.” If it’s my mother, I swear to God…
“Eunjungie! San! Surprise!” Junhyuk oppa entered the room, followed closely behind by Sungwoon oppa, Hojeong oppa, Kidmon oppa, and Moonkyu oppa. I couldn’t hold in my sigh of relief as I got up to greet them.
“Oppas! What are you all doing here?” I happily exclaimed, gladly going into Junhyuk oppa’s open arms.
“We wanted to stop by and see if we could get free food.” Kidmon oppa laughed.
“But, we didn’t know you two had company.” Sungwoon oppa glanced at Colette who seemed confused at the Korean being spoken. Ha, how does it feel now? I’m sorry, that was mean.
“More like Yoonsan has company.” I grumbled. Junhyuk oppa pulled back but held me by my shoulders and gave me a worried look.
“Is everything okay, Eunjungie?” I smiled, nodding my head, trying to assure Junhyuk oppa even though I wasn’t sure myself.
“Do I need to call Edward hyung?” Hojeong oppa joked. I giggled, shaking my head.
“No, it’s fine. Let me go and let Sooyoung eonni know that you all are here.” Just as I went to move out of Junhyuk oppa’s arms, a few maids were entering the dining room carrying plates followed by Sooyoung eonni who was carrying plates as well.
“Aish, I could hear you all the way in the kitchen. Ever heard of indoor voices?” Sooyoung eonni tsked, placing the plates she was carrying in front of two of the empty chairs.
“Hi noona.” The five of them chorused, moving to give her a hug. Sooyoung eonni acted like she was annoyed as she gave them hugs but you could tell she was only joking.
“Are you going to eat with us, noona?” Moonkyu oppa spoke up. Sooyoung eonni smiled, shaking her head.
“I’m working, you weirdos.” I giggled.
“Please eonni, enjoy your food as well.” I begged. Sooyoung eonni laughed, petting my head.
“I’m sorry Miss Eunjung, but I need to clean the kitchen then head out. Nayoung has another date and needs my help.” I pouted but accepted her answer anyways. Sooyoung eonni excused herself after that before following the maids out of the dining room.
“Oppas, please, take a seat.” I smiled at them. Yoonsan moved back to his seat and continued his conversation with Colette who seemed lost still. That’s right , now you know how I feel. Ugh, that was really mean. I’m sorry.
Junhyuk oppa immediately took the seat next to mine, after pulling my chair out for me and pushing it back in. Moonkyu oppa then sat next to Junhyuk oppa, Hojeong oppa sitting next to Moonkyu oppa, Kidmon oppa at the head, and Sungwoon oppa sitting on his other side. I noticed how they all ignored the chairs closest to Colette and I couldn’t help but feel a little bad. Just a little.
“Eunjungie, have you got your bridesmaids all picked out?” Sungwoon oppa asked me. I smiled, nodding my head.
“Yes, oppa. My mother wants to set up a date though so you all could meet and we can sort out who will be partnered with who. And to also pick out the dresses and tuxedos together to see if they will look good.” I explained.
“Oooh, are your bridesmaids pretty?” Kidmon oppa wiggled his eyebrows. I laughed when Sungwoon oppa hit his arm.
“Yah, don’t be creepy.” Sungwoon oppa scolded.
“To answer your question, Kidmon oppa, yes, they’re all very pretty but one of them has a boyfriend.” I laughed at Kidmon oppa’s disappointed expression.
“That’s only 1 out of 5, I’m good with that ratio.” Kidmon oppa said with a shrug.
“Okay guys, let’s eat. That’s why we came, no?”
“Junhyuk oppa, I thought you all came to see Yoonsan and I. I’m hurt.” I faked a hurt expression.
“Aigoo! Is my Eunjungie sad? I’m sorry. Here, let your favorite oppa feed you to make up for it.” Junhyuk oppa got my fork and twirled some pasta onto it before lifting the fork up to me. I laughed and tried to take the fork away from him but he pulled it away. I felt my heart twinge at how similar this was to Yoonsan and I a few weeks ago. But I pushed that thought away, reminding myself why him and I are together in the first place before allowing Junhyuk oppa to feed me.
“Eat it well, Eunjungie. You need all your strength for these next few months, okay?” I smiled a small smile as I chewed the food, nodding my head.
“Hyung, Eunjung is perfectly capable of feeding herself.” I flinched at Yoonsan’s cold tone, looking to see him glaring at Junhyuk oppa but oppa seemed unfazed by Yoonsan’s glare and tone.
“San, you haven’t introduced your friend to us. Are we not important enough to know her?” Junhyuk oppa smiled at Yoonsan, the light tone of his voice showing he was playing around about them not being important. Yoonsan cleared his throat before introducing Colette to the oppas. Kidmon oppa and Hojeong oppa seemed uncomfortable shaking her hand but smiled anyways. Well, it looked more like grimaces. Sungwoon oppa flashed a quick smile at her before going back to his food. Moonkyu oppa showed complete disinterest while shaking her hand and during the introductions. Junhyuk oppa smiled his usual smile but there seemed to be something different about his smile this time. I couldn’t put my finger on it though.
Colette spoke to Yoonsan before he turned to speak to them.
“She said she’s happy to meet all of you and is looking forward to getting to know you.”
“Ahh, well tell her likewise, from all of us.” Junhyuk oppa acted as their spokesperson.
“Anyways, let’s get back to dinner, shall we. And I’m sure we could feed ourselves, right?” Yoonsan gave me a pointed look at the last part and I quickly adverted my eyes, looking at my plate.
“San, are you telling your hyung what to do? Aigoo, when did you become so defiant.” Junyuk oppa laughed, ruffling my hair. Yoonsan merely rolled his eyes before going back to his conversation with Colette.
We all went back to eating, conversation happening every now and then when I saw my phone screen light up, showing I had a text from Sungwoon oppa. I glanced over at him but he continued to eat. I slid my finger around on the screen for my passcode so I could see the message.
“Edward hyung told us what happened. Between you, Colette, and Yoonsan. Don’t worry, we’re on your side.” I looked back up at Sungwoon oppa who was taking a sip of his water, sending me a quick wink. I quickly sent a message back.
“That’s exactly what I didn’t want happening. Please, oppa, don’t treat Colette badly because of this. Yoonsan would be even more upset if he finds out. He’s mad enough at me as it is and I don’t want him even more mad. I wouldn’t be able to take it. I’m hurt enough as it is.” I went back to eating, waiting for Sungwoon oppa to read the text. I nearly choked when Sungwoon oppa squealed.
“Oh! Eungjungie, are you okay?” Junhyuk oppa grabbed his drink—it was closer for him than mine—and handed it to me, patting my back as I coughed.
“I’m fine, thank you.” I finally got out.
“Sungwoon, what the hell?” Yoonsan exclaimed, shocked by the squeal as well.
“Oh, uh, SHINee just uploaded their new mv. I’ve been excitedly awaiting their comeback. I’m sorry I scared you all.” Sungwoon oppa apologized before quickly getting his phone.
“I didn’t know SHINee was having a comeback.” I heard Moonkyu oppa mutter. I went back to eating once I felt it was safe when my phone screen lit up again.
“Holy ! No wonder Edward hyung ships you and San! I so see it now! But what the hell?! He’s hurt you, Eunjungie? Aish! I’ll give him a piece of my mind!”
“No!” I flinched at how loud my voice was. That was suppose to be in my head, and in the text I was going to send to Sungwoon oppa…not out loud. Good job, Eunjung, now everyone is staring at you.
“Everybody say no.” I then continued to sing the chorus from BTS’ N.O, hoping I could play off my sudden outburst that way. Thankfully, Sungwoon oppa knew exactly what had happened and he continued to sing along with me.
“Yah, don’t tell me that this isn’t a great song.” Sungwoon oppa said to everyone who stared at the both of us with confused expressions.
“Uh, I guess.” Hojeong oppa scratched the back of his head.
“Aigoo, you two are too cute.” Junhyuk oppa laughed. Then everyone went back to eating. I sent Sungwoon oppa a thankful but warning look, hoping he doesn’t say anything to Yoonsan.
After dinner, the guys and Colette went to the living room and I used the excuse of the bathroom to slip away for a moment. I just needed to breath. I hurried out to the garden, breathing in the cool, night air. I sat on the edge of one of the lawn chairs on the deck, staying close to the door. I dropped my head into my hands.
“How embarrassing was that?” I groaned at the sound of Colette’s voice.
“I give you props though. You’ve managed to get those guys wrapped around your finger with your lack of looks. What’s your secret? It must’ve been sore for you for awhile.” Colette sniggered.
“What do you want, Colette?” I ignored how she basically implied that I was a .
“Nothing, just came to see how close you are to calling off the wedding. Obviously San isn’t happy anymore. Why make him suffer anymore? Just give up.”
“Colette, are you deaf? What part of ‘our hands are tied’ did you not understand from the last time you brought this up? You obviously don’t know the type of class Yoonsan and I are in. But read my lips, the wedding. Can’t. Be. Cancelled.” I was standing by this point, not liking how she looked down at me. I mean, she looks down at me anyways since she’s taller than me, but at least I got more height when I wasn’t sitting.
“And you obviously don’t know to what extent I will go to get my way. Even if it means involving San.” I was confused by this. Involve Yoonsan? How? Doesn’t she care about him?
“What do you mean by involving Yoonsan?” She merely smirked.
“You’ll see, if you keep this engagement going.” I scoffed, rolling my eyes.
“You’ve never seen a Korean drama, have you? The engagement won’t be cancelled, just like the wedding because it can’t.” Colette laughed. Well, more like cackled.
“Sweet little Eunjung. The difference between the engagements in those dramas is that they are dramas. This is real life.” And with that, she walked back inside, still cackling.
“You’d be surprised.” I muttered, shaking my head and sitting back down on the lawn chair.
“Eunjung, keep up.” I sighed, doing as my mother said. Mrs. Yoon and my mother had brought Yoonsan and I out to go and shop for the wedding rings. My brother even came along for some strange reason but I wasn’t going to out right question him about it.
It’s been around a month since the first incident with Colette and she’s sticking to Yoonsan like a leech now when she wasn’t busy doing whatever it is that she is. Yoonsan wasn’t mad at me anymore…I don’t think. But, we weren’t the same as before that incident. We were merely like acquaintances but further apart than how we were when we first met. The thing I hate the most though is that the further we grew apart, the more I realized that I actually like Yoonsan. And not just like him as a person, but like, like him. And to be honest, it’s scary. I didn’t expect to grow feelings for him past friendship and it’s the first time I ever felt something like this for someone. And with how everything has been between us, it’s even more scary because if something were to happen to drive us apart, I don’t how I would handle it. I’m scared of being hurt and heartbroken.
“Here we are, this is the place Sera suggested to us for the rings. Oh, look at these displays!” Mrs. Yoon gushed. I put on a fake smile, moving to stand next to Mrs. Yoon who awed over the rings in the window display.
“They are pretty.” But they aren’t my taste. I’m not a huge fan of diamonds and the jewelry I had that had diamonds, had colored jewels as well. But if anything, I always thought of having a wedding ring that had a pearl or anything opal. I always loved pearls and things with an opal design.
“Hurry, let’s go inside and look. Come, San! We don’t have all day!” Mrs. Yoon linked her arm with mine and pulled me into the store, my mother close behind with Yoonsan and Moonkyu oppa at the very back.
I gaped at the inside when I saw how many displays there were with different rings and other pieces of jewelry. Where did we even start? My mother and Mrs. Yoon immediately went to a sales woman who was making her way towards us. I stayed rooted in my spot, looking around at everything from the displays with glittering necklaces to the giant chandeliers hanging from the ceilings.
“Are you okay?” I jumped when I felt a hand on my back. I looked and saw Yoonsan staring at me with a worried expression. I felt my heart get caught in my throat. I couldn’t speak so I merely nodded my head. Yoonsan still seemed worried but he removed his hand from my back anyways.
“Come one, let’s go start looking at the rings. Get ideas.” Yoonsan walked ahead of me. The spot where his hand once was felt like it was on fire. I quickly fanned myself, hoping to get rid of the pink in my cheeks that I knew what already there before going to join Yoonsan.
Yoonsan and I stayed silent as we looked at the rings. It was really awkward, for me at least. I wasn’t sure about Yoonsan. I couldn’t help but blame myself for the awkwardness like I’ve been doing for the past month. If I had just kept my mouth shut and not tell Yoonsan anything, we wouldn’t be in this position with our relationship. I shouldn’t have said anything, to anyone. I should’ve kept it to myself.
“San!” Are. You. Kidding. ME?! I held back the groan that almost escaped at the sound of Colette’s voice. Yoonsan’s face quickly brightened as he went over to greet her and I presumed her manager. The three spoke to each other in French and I merely stood off to the side like an idiot. Colette quickly latched on to Yoonsan’s arm, the two of them walking around the store. I felt the tears well up in my eyes at the sight. They could easily be mistaken for a couple and they both seemed so happy.
“Eunjung, what is Yoonsan doing?” I froze at the sound of my mother’s voice. I quickly wiped at my eyes, being careful to not smudge my makeup. I turned and saw my mother with a cold glare on her face and Mrs. Yoon and the sales woman seemed confused.
“Eunjung, go get Yoonsan so we can look for the rings.” Mrs. Yoon urged.
“Yes, Eunjung, go get him.” My mother coldly said. I quickly nodded my head, hurrying over to where Colette and Yoonsan were.
“Yoonsan.” I tapped his shoulder as him and Colette looked at some watches. He turned his head to look at me, Colette doing so as well and she quickly glared before smiling at me.
“Our mothers want us to look for rings with them.” I tried to keep my voice steady and my head held high but with the feeling my mother’s eyes piercing the back of my head and Colette staring me down as well, it was difficult. Yoonsan nodded his head, unlatching his arm from Colette’s and speaking to her in French before motioning for me to follow him. We walked to our mothers together, but had some distance between us.
“San, why did you leave Eunjung by herself? You two are engaged. You have to do these things together.” Mrs. Yoon stated. Yoonsan simply nodded his head.
“Yes, mother. I’m sorry.” But he didn’t sound sorry at all. He sounded like a robot.
The four of us followed the sales woman to the glass case that had all the rings. Moonkyu oppa came and joined us, standing behind us as my mother and Mrs. Yoon pointed out rings. I tried to look interested and happy but noticed that Yoonsan wasn’t even trying. My mother was constantly giving me a pointed look, sending fear through my body each time. After what felt like the tenth time, I finally grabbed Yoonsan’s hand. He looked at me, shocked.
“Yoonsan, please, could you just pretend to be happy. Please.” I pleaded with him, only loud enough for him to hear. Yoonsan stared at me before sighing.
“I’m sorry. I’ll be happy, Eunjung, just for you.” Yoonsan whispered back before taking his hand out of mine and looking at a ring his mother pointed at, smile on his face. I stared at him, watching how he smiled a fake smile, his eyes not lighting up like they usually did. His smile was still beautiful, but I hated how he faked them around me now. I only saw the real smiles when he was with Colette. Would I be willing to stay in this one sided relationship with him, where he’s only happy when with another girl that isn’t me? Could I do it?
