Chapter 32
Rain On MeAfter I had gotten off the phone with Edward, I stayed in my room, contemplating about what I should do when a maid came and got me for dinner. I noticed that Yoonsan wasn’t at the table yet and began to wonder where he went. He didn’t leave, did he?
“Yoonsan left an hour ago.” Sooyoung eonni brought me my food. I smiled at her as a thank you.
“I think, I should wait for him. It seems rude to eat without him, don’t you think?” And I didn’t want to eat by myself but Sooyoung eonni doesn’t need to know that.
“I think it’s best if you eat now. We don’t when he’ll be back and I’m sure you still feel tired after your headache.” I looked at her, shocked that she knew about my earlier headache.
“I saw you when you came back from dress shopping. I heard you mumble to yourself. I only picked up marriage and headache.” Sooyoung eonni laughed, ruffling my hair. “Tell you what, I’ll sit here with you while you eat so that you’re not by yourself, okay? But you have to eat now and you can tell me about your day. It’s been a while since we talked.” I couldn’t help but smile. I always felt relaxed just being in Sooyoung eonni’s presence.
“Okay eonni.”
Dinner went by great and I loved talking with Sooyoung eonni. I realized how little we’ve talked and I missed the conversations her and I used to have. At times, it felt like I was talking to my sister—and for some reason, that made me feel sad—but it also felt like I was talking to a mom. Or, what I felt like talking a mom would feel like. I told Sooyoung eonni I’ll be in the living room to wait for Yoonsan. I didn’t want to wait for him and I to talk about what happened earlier since I know that I will chicken out if I did. As I sat on the couch, debating about how to go about the conversation in my head, I ended up falling asleep. When I woke up, I heard Sooyoung eonni and Yoonsan talking in the kitchen. I got up to go and see if Yoonsan and I could talk when I heard Sooyoung eonni mention to Yoonsan that he needed to finish eating before he went to go and try talking to me. I decided to make my prescence known and I wanted to laugh when they both jumped. I explained to them where I had been and soon, Sooyoung eonni left us alone. I stayed rooted in my spot though. Now that I was here, I didn’t know what to do.
“Do you want to sit?” I startled at Yoonsan’s voice but then nodded my head, moving quickly to the stool next to him and climbing up. Why did I have to be short? Moonkyu oppa is tall and our parents are average height as well. Why am I the short one?
As soon as I sat down, we were both quiet. I looked over and saw that Yoonsan hadn’t touched his food. I felt a little worried about this since I didn’t know when he last ate.
“Aren’t you going to eat?” Yoonsan looked over at me before nodding. He took a few bites before stopping.
“I’m sorry. It just feels weird being the only one eating.” Yoonsan sheepishly said, his eyes twitching.
I hesitated before sliding off the stool and going to look for something light to eat so Yoonsan could eat as well. Once I found something, I went back to my stool.
“You didn’t have to get anything. I would’ve eaten eventually.” Yoonsan sounded guilty over the fact that I got food.
“It’s fine. I was feeling a little hungry anyways.” And then it was silent again.
“Yoonsan” I decided to be the one to speak up first. “I’m sorry.” I glanced up just as Yoonsan turned to look at me, his eyes so wide I thought that his lids might rip.
“I must be making your life difficult, I know. I will try my best from now on to keep from doing so.” Yoonsan let out a sound that sounded like a choke and a scoff.
“Why are you sorry? You have no reason to be sorry! I’m the one who should be saying sorry! I should be on my knees, begging for your forgivness. You should be angry at me! You shouldn’t be sorry.” He exclaimed, sounding frustrated and guilty at the same time.
I looked at him, confused. “Why should I be angry? I’ve been the one at fault. I’ve been making you upset. I’m the one standing in the way between yours and Colette’s happiness.” Yoonsan threw his hands up in the air, getting off the stool and began pacing.
“Look! I’m even making you upset right now! I’m sorry, Yoonsan, really sorry.” I pleaded.
“No!” Yoonsan stopped pacing only to face me. “How can you be like this? How?! You’re wallowing in guilt that you shouldn’t even have but I’ve been over here, making your life miserable and everything difficult! I don’t even want to be with Colette, not anymore. But how could you even apologize to me?! Why can’t you be angry?! I’ve said and done so many ty things to you and yet, you still apologize! You still defend me and Colette from everyone. Call her a , a home wrecker! Call me an , a ! Call us something!” I bit my lip, trying to keep from flinching when Yoonsan’s voice raised until he was practically screaming at me.
“You admit that everything you’ve done was mean? You want me to lower myself to that level and try and get revenge for everything that’s been done to me? Do you not know how tiring that would be for me? I’ve always felt easily guilty. I couldn’t be able to do something in spite of someone. But, you wouldn’t know that.” I smiled a sad smile towards the end.
“How can you still stay so calm?! You’re basically everyone’s punching bag! A welcome mat that’s seen better days! Your own family doesn’t respect you! Colette is pushing you around to get what she wants and I’ve done nothing but break every promise that I’ve made to you! Just yell at me, please!” Yoonsan pleaded. I had to look away. I couldn’t stand the look in his eyes since I knew that if I did, my resolve would break. I would forever be a victim to this heartbreak.
“I know that. And it does hurt, but I’m not going to yell because that’s what you want. You don’t deserve that. I’ve been trying to make myself stronger, mainly so I could stay protected from you.” I finally looked him in the eye.
“I’ve fallen for you, Yoonsan. And it scares me because I don’t know where I stand with you. And because of my feelings for you, I can’t do what my mother wants me to do and get in between you and Colette. I’m scared because for the first time in my life, my education is coming second and I don’t know what I could handle more. Losing you or my right to go to college. But, honestly, I’d rather lose my right to go to college than have you hate me forever. Your happiness has become more important to me than my own but, the pain is getting to be too much to handle.” I kept my voice steady and held eye contact, not wanting to show him that I was weak.
“From now on, forget the kiss. Don’t act like you owe me anything because you don’t. We’ll carry on as we have been, before Colette came into the picture. I miss us and how we used to be friends, so can we go back to that? That’s all I ask. I will bury my feelings for you till they no longer exist.” I tried to smile and hoped that it looked like I was fine. I felt the smile fall though when Yoonsan’s face hardened and his head shake.
“Very well then. I won’t force you.” I whispered. I slid off the stool and walked past Yoonsan, only to be stopped when he grabbed me by the arm.
“I can’t go back as friends because my heart won’t let me. You wouldn’t be the only one in pain. Did you ever stop to think about how I felt?” Yoonsan forced me to turn around so that I was facing him.
“Do you think you’re the only one that’s grown feelings? But unlike you, I’m too much of a coward. I got scared by these feelings and ran away from them but I’m done running. I can’t run anyway more because the more I run, the more you get hurt and I hate being the one that’s causing the pain.” Did he, did he mean what I think he means? I didn’t even get a chance to ask what he meant, his hand was on the back of my neck and he pulled me closer.
Author’s point of View
Yoonsan pulled Eunjung into a kiss, not an accidental one like the one they had earlier, but a real kiss. He had one hand on the back of her neck, the other resting on her waist. Yoonsan sensed Eunjung’s hesitancy the first few seconds of the kiss before she slowly began to kiss back. One hand rested on his hand on her waist while the other slowly made it’s way to the side of his face. They stayed there for who knows how long until they both pulled away, out of breath.
Eunjung opened to speak when she was cut off by a maid.
“Master Yoon, Colette is here and she is insistent on seeing you. I tried sending her away but…” So even the staff didn’t like her? Yoonsan groaned, resting his forehead on Eunjung’s. Eunjung couldn’t help but giggle at this.
“Tell her to stay where she is. I’ll be there in a bit.” Yoonsan called out to the maid who bowed and went to do as she was told. Yoonsan opened his eyes and stared into Eunjung’s.
“Go upstairs, I’ll get rid of her then we can finish talking. And I mean actually talking.” Eunjung smiled a small, shy smile and nodded her head. Yoonsan kissed her on the forehead before walking out the kitchen. He made sure Eunjung went up the stairs before going to the front door where Colette was.
“Took you long enough. That stupid maid tried to turn me away. You need to hire some new staff.” Colette scoffed. She tried to make her way in the house but was stopped by Yoonsan who used his body to block her.
“What are you doing? Aren’t you going to let me in?” Colette laughed. Yoonsan kept a straight face, shaking his head.
“Okay, what’s with you? Is Eunjung being annoying or something? Is that way you’re behaving like this? Taking it out on me? Let me know so I can go and straighten her out or at least kick her out.”
“Don’t speak about her like that. I thought I made myself clear earlier, Colette. We’re done. I have a fiancée. I’m going to get married to her. Her and I are going to be like a normal, happy, couple. Before and after we get married.” Yoonsan said with a firm tone, standing his ground. He was serious when he said he was going to work on his relationship with Eunjung and if that meant cutting Colette out of his life, so be it.
“Stop kidding yourselves. You two aren’t a normal couple.” Colette giggled to herself, shaking her head.
“But we could be.” Yoonsan hadn’t even noticed when Eunjung came down the stairs or that she even knew French. How long has she known French?
“What?” Colette guffawed, staring at Eunjung as if she was a speck of dirt that dirtied her new shoes.
“Him and I could be a normal couple. We were actually working on that until we were interrupted by one of the maids telling us that you were here. Why are you here, Colette? Isn’t it a little late? I thought models had busy schedules.” Eunjung was trying to appear like she wasn’t scared but Yoonsan could tell. He could feel her trembling next to him. Yoonsan wrapped an arm around her shoulders to show that she wasn’t alone. That he had her back.
“I was in the neighborhood and thought I’d stop by.” Colette eyed how close Yoonsan and Eunjung were and glared. “I bet San didn’t tell you that we kissed earlier today.” Colette smirked, thinking she had one upped Eunjung. Eunjung looked unfazed by this though.
“I know. Yoonsan explained to me what had happened. And, with your history, I would believe him any day before I even doubted him over something you’ve said. Now, you’ve stopped by. It’s time you leave. Oh, and don’t call any of our staff stupid.” Eunjung had no malice in her tone the entire time she spoke to Colette. Her voice was even the entire time and Yoonsan couldn’t help but be amazed by this.
“San, aren’t you-“ Yoonsan cut off Colette.
“Goodbye, Colette. I hope the rest of your time in Korea is good.” And then with that, Yoonsan closed the door before Colette could say anything more.
As soon as the door was closed and locked, Yoonsan pulled Eunjung into a tight hug. He knew she needed one right now. Eunjung clutched tightly onto Yoonsan, feeling like she could breath now that Colette was gone. It felt like when she first spoke out against the marriage to her parents and the Yoons.
“How much did I miss out on while I was being stupid? When did you learn French?” Eunjung let out a laugh.
“I may have been a bit jealous with how you and Colette could communicate just between each other. And I don’t like not knowing something.” Eunjung sheepishly admitted. Yoonsan chuckled.
“So you can feel other emotions besides guilt?” Yoonsan joked. Eunjung glared at him before hitting him on the arm.
“Ow! Why did you hit me?” Yoonsan exclaimed, rubbing his arm.
“You deserved it.” Yoonsan laughed at the playful smile on Eunjung’s face that she was trying so hard to hide. He was glad that they were on their way to their old—possibly new—normal.
