Chapter 45
Rain On MeTwo Months Later
I sorted through the box that I had placed on the coffee table, sharing my attention with the task on hand to what was on TV. We had moved into this apartment almost a month ago but we were still unpacking boxes. The furniture and appliances were all in place but there were still boxes with miscellaneous items that we had to sort through but with my school and Yoonsan working with some old friends of his that he ran into at their studio, neither of us has had the time to get them done. I was watching the show on tv when my hand grazed against something familiar in the box. I brought my full attention to the box and pulled out whatever it was that I had grabbed and I couldn’t help but smile. It was one of the headbands that Yoonsan and I had made at the Winter fair last year.
“Waaah, we’re spending our first Christmas as a married couple in Washington D.C.” I muttered to myself as I searched the box for my headband. When we had moved here, it had been completely unexpected and unplanned. We literally got on a plane two days after I received the acceptance letter from Georgetown University and I hadn’t even applied to that school.
“We’re going, right? You’re accepting, right?” I remember those were the first words out of Yoonsan’s mouth when I had finished reading the letter. Sooyoung eonni and Mina were looking at me expectantly, waiting for my answer.
“I don’t know.” Was the only thing I had been able to say. It was all so surprising and unexpected and I just didn’t know what to say. It felt too good to be true.
“What do you mean? This could be a once in a lifetime chance for you. We have to go.” Yoonsan seemed more sure of everything than I was and was adamant that I should accept. That we should just pick everything up and move out to Washington D.C.
“Babe, it’s just, can we even go? What about your dad’s company? This house? All the workers? We can’t just leave and I don’t want to go by myself.”
“Let me worry about all that but San is right. This could be your only chance to go to college. Eunjung, you should go.” Mina had backed up Yoonsan immediately.
“I need to think about this, just, give me a moment.” I had retreated back to our room to think over everything away from them but Yoonsan had followed right after me.
“Jagi, what’s there to think about? A college has accepted you when every other college said they wouldn’t take you. You need a change of scenery too. After everything that’s happened, I can see it. You’re not happy. There’s too much here that’s bringing you down. Eunjung, you need this.”
“But what about you?”
“What about me? I’ll go with you. Where you go, I’ll go. Home is where the heart is, right?”
It had been pretty—more like super extremely—cheesy but it convinced me to e-mail the college to let them know that I planned to attend their college and to see what they needed me to send to them. They had assured me that everything was taken care of and I was being offered a full-ride to the school because of my academic career. I had found this all so strange and extremely sudden and I was even more confused when Rani and Angie Skyped me an hour later asking if we were coming down to Washington D.C. Yoonsand and I didn’t know how they even knew about this but when we told them that I was going to Georgetown, Angie informed us that there was a flight from Seoul to Washington D.C. in two days that we could take and that’s how we ended up moving in less than a week.
We had just packed our clothes and to take with us while Mina and Sooyoung eonni packed our belongings in boxes, worked on selling the house and finding jobs for the other workers and also keeping my parents and Yoonsan’s father from finding out. Rani and Angie offered their home to us while we we worked on settling in and Mina worked on getting us a place of our own. How she did that from South Korea, still amazes me but she found a nice apartment that was close to the school for me to just walk there every day that I had class. She also helped Yoonsan get a job. Mina knew a friend in Washington D.C. that was looking to hire an architect. It didn’t take a lot of Yoonsan’s time but the pay was great. We were both happy so far, here in Washington D.C. I was just a little sad to have left all our friends. We couldn’t even see them before we left. I had just sent a mass text explaining everything.
“I’m home.” I heard Yoonsan just as I found my headband.
“In the living room.” I called out to him, placing the headbands off to the side while I continued to shift through the box.
My attention was on the box and the tv that I didn’t notice Yoonsan coming into the living room. Next thing I knew, my head was between his hands as he gave me a quick kiss on the lips and quietly saying ‘I missed you.’
“Yah, what was that for?” I smiled before giving him another kiss.
“Nothing, just missed you. At work, some people were talking about their significant other and I just ended up missing you.”
“You’re so cute.” I giggled, kissing his nose and giving him a tight hug. “But I missed you too.”
When we finally pulled away, Yoonsan sat down next to me on the couch and looked through another box that I planned to go through after the one I had now.
“What are you watching?” Yoonsan finally took notice of the tv when the show kept bleeping out the curse words. I looked up as well and saw that there was a fight going on.
“Oh, Little Women: Dallas. Angie showed it to me the other day. Well, it was two different Little Women in two different cities show but Little Women: Dallas is the same concept.” I explained before going back to the box my box.
“Of course she would.” I heard him mumble. I just laughed and shook my head. He can say what he wants but I like the show and it was entertaining.
“Oh, babe, look what I found.” I got his headband, placing it on his head. “It’s the headbands we made at the winter fair last year.”
“What do you know, they are.” I couldn’t help but grin at the small smile on his face. “I can’t believe our first Christmas as a married couple will be in Washington D.C.”
“I know! I said the same exact thing earlier.” I exclaimed.
We continued to sort through the boxes, finding cute trinkets and picture frames and trying to figure out where they should be placed in the apartment to make our apartment look and feel more like a home. We were silent as we worked, occasionally glancing at each other with a smile. It still felt surreal, our lives now. It’s only been two months so we haven’t fully adjusted, but within time, we’ll be used to it.
“So, how’s school? You have midterms soon, don’t you?” I groaned.
“Ugh, don’t remind me. I’m so not looking forward to them or finals.” I sighed. Yoonsan just laughed, leaning over to give me a kiss on the cheek. I lived for these moments, where it was just us two. Yoonsan is pretty private about our relationship. He doesn’t really like doing a lot of PDA when we’re in public. He gets shy when I do more than just hold his hand but when it’s just us two, he’s always giving me a kiss or has his arm around me and I love it.
“You’ll do great, jagi. I believe in you.” I smiled at this, rewarding his sweet words with a kiss. We were a cheesy couple, I know.
“Soooo…have you seen my texts?” I cheekily asked. He sighed, shaking his head.
“Yes, I’ve seen the texts, the e-mails, the notes you leave in my pockets. But Eunjung, I don’t now if is a good time for a dog. We still haven’t moved in fully and we’re both so busy. Maybe after you finish this semester and we’ve gotten situated.” I pouted.
“But baaaabe, it’s a doggy!” I whined.
“But jagi, it’s not a good time right now.” He whined right back. Doesn’t do aegyo my .
A/N Short chapter to my standards but I hope the cuteness makes up for it!
