Pre-Final: Tainted Light
Eternal FlameDuring the daytime, Hyunjoong was still feeling extremely uneasy, his heart and thoughts racing at the same pace. He sat at the windowsill underneath the sun, his lips and twirling around his fingers, hoping that the sight of Kyuyoung could ease his palpitating heart.
Nicole groaned when she saw the boy there again and this time didn't bother to call him to sleep, simply throwing the covers over her head and turning away from the window.
Hyunjoong watched as each student walked into the school but strangely, the cute boy didn't appear today. Nor did he appear in the afternoon. In fact, he didn't even go to school that day.
Is he sick? What if Kyuyoung's sick? Does he have a fever? A cold? What if it's a really bad cold?
Suddenly remembering what Kyujong had lectured him about, he tried to stop the thoughts but he couldn't help but worry as much as he did for what was going to happen at midnight. What was going to happen? Why didn't Hyungjun tell him? Was the nine-tailed fox really going to show itself after over 500 years? Where was it going to come from?
Questions filled his head and he shook it, trying to clear his mind to think properly but it was futile. His palms became sweaty, his heart thumped hard against his chest, and he couldn't help but feel a deep pit in his stomach. Taking out the ring from his pocket, he looked at it and compared it with his on his ring finger again. It wasn't an illusion. They were exactly the same. The same question repeated in his head. Who was Youngsaeng?
Once he began to feel lightheaded, he quickly hopped off the windowsill and out from beneath the afternoon sun, shutting the curtains. He crawled back under the blanket with Nicole and closed his eyes, trying to empty his head and sleep but he couldn't even breathe properly from the anxiety.
Turning to Hyunsaeng, who was reluctantly sleeping between him and Nicole, he found that the toddler was awake.
"Hyunsaeng...?" he whispered carefully, gently bringing his son over to his side so that he didn't feel as uncomfortable.
The little boy looked up at him with large, innocent eyes. Hyunjoong smiled and pecked him on the forehead. "Do... Do you know what date is November 3rd? Is it special?"
Hyunsaeng seemed confused for a second as he blinked owlishly at his father but then sat up with a big grin. He tried to speak and ended up saying, "Birth." Hyunjoong furrowed his eyebrows as he echoed the word.
Thinking deeply, he bit his bottom lip as he kept on repeating the word under his breath. Hyunsaeng watched him.
"Birth... Birth... Birth--" he came to a sudden epiphany. "Birthday."
Hyunsaeng nodded enthusiastically as he giggled, clapping his hands together. Hyunjoong understood. "So November 3rd is someone's birthday?"
"Mommy!"
The older vampire nodded. "November 3rd is Youngsaeng's birthday... But then why is Hyungjun saying that on November 3rd, Youngsaeng won't be here anymore...?"
Hyunsaeng stared up at the vampire before crawling up onto his lap and curling up there. Hyunjoong smiled softly, wrapping his arms around the little toddler. The two lay down under the blanket and finally, Hyunjoong felt a little bit calm with his son tight in his arms and he managed to fall asleep.
Three hours before twelve, he was awoken by Hyunsaeng, who was struggling to wriggle out of his tight hug. Chuckling, Hyunjoong loosened his arms and sat up, letting Hyunsaeng also sit up with him. Nicole had already left for class.
"Hyunsaeng-ah, in three hours, it's going to be your mom's birthday," said Hyunjoong with a gentle smile. "When that happens, you have to 'Happy Birthday' okay?"
The latter blinked owlishly. "Saengil... chukhahamnida...?"
Hyunjoong nodded. "Neh, you have to say that."
The little boy nodded and put his hands out. Hyunjoong knew what he was meant and reached over to the side table, picking up the ring and passing it to his son. "This?"
Hyunsaeng took it and began inspecting it again. Hyunjoong sighed, sitting back and leaning his head back onto the head as he watched his son play peacefully with the ring. He couldn't understood why Hyunsaeng found it special. Because it was his mother's? But if Hyunsaeng remembered his mom, then how come he didn't remember him? And how could a boy be a mother?
"Hyunsaeng-ah."
Hyunsaeng looked up from the ring. Hyunjoong went over to him and reached out, cupping the little marble necklace with the tiny flame lit inside it. "Who is this from?"
"Mommy and Daddy!" exclaimed Hyunsaeng with a big smile.
The older boy nodded and pointed and the ring. "And whose is this?"
"Mommy!" was the answer.
Hyunjoong pursed his lips. That meant that the necklace was also from him and Youngsaeng. He glanced outside and remembered that he couldn't sense spirit magic anymore. That fact scared him more than anything. Of course, not more than losing Hyunsaeng but it was frightening. It was like losing his sense of sight. He couldn't see the spirit magic anymore even though he could ever since he was born.
The spirit magic of the nine-tailed fox, he couldn't even sense though to the rest of the vampires, it was obviously growing. Not even growing, multiplying rapidly. He turned back Hyunsaeng, who had his focus back on the ring.
With a slight smile, Hyunjoong stood up. "Hyunsaeng, do you want to go out for a walk?"
The little boy nodded and hopped off the bed with his father, holding tightly onto the ring. The two walked outside, smelling the fresh air. Hyunjoong held Hyunsaeng in his arms as the latter didn't want to walk and strolled around the campus and the courtyard.
"Did I come here with Mommy before?" he questioned the little boy as he walked into the garden with the fountain.
Hyunsaeng nodded and didn't say anything else. When Hyunjoong felt like his arms were about to fall off, he quickly put his son down onto the ground and clasped onto his hand, walking around slowly at toddling pace.
With their backs to the moon, Hyunjoong didn't notice that the moon was slowly turning into a different color. The two strolled back into the courtyard and when they were about to head back to the Night class building, the clock tower of the school struck twelve and only then did the ground reflect the moon's light. Hyunjoong's eyes widened when he saw the stone and he whipped around, looking up to see a bright, glowing red full moon with a massive nine-tailed fox underneath.
