One Bottle, One Wish
Eternal FlameHyunjoong and Youngsaeng were together most of the time throughout the day that passed, weeks going like a blink of an eye. Time ran too fast for them and even though Hyunjoong tried to do everything that Youngsaeng wanted, he felt as though they didn't have enough time.
Youngsaeng smiled at him and leaned his head onto the latter's shoulders as they sat at the cliff, watching the sunset. "Nothing can tear us apart, not time, not destiny, not death."
There was a pause of silence before Hyunjoong stood up and stretched. "Well... I guess it's time to go to class, isn't it?"
The younger boy got up with his lover. "Today... There's a game I want to teach you. A long standing tradition of my family."
Hyunjoong looked at him curiously. "What is it?"
Youngsaeng picked up the bag he had brought along and headed to the slope leading down to the river. "Come with me." The two were careful in sliding down and once they arrived at the bottom, Youngsaeng began to walk downstream.
"Where are we going?" Hyunjoong questioned curiously.
"Where does the river lead to?" Youngsaeng asked him.
The older boy furrowed his eyebrows in confusion. "The ocean."
Youngsaeng smiled. "That's right. Every creek, stream, or river, no matter how small or how big, will always pour its water into the vast ocean, where the water will flow. That means that this river will end sometime at an ocean and that's where we'll play our game."
Hyunjoong followed the boy and they walked for an hour or so before Hyunjoong checked his watch. "Youngsaeng, are you sure we shouldn't go to class?"
"We don't have much more time left," the latter replied. "Why not enjoy it the best we can?"
Hyunjoong grinned and grabbed onto Youngsaeng's empty hand as they walked through the night. It wasn't long before they could see the faint, white line of the ocean reflecting the moon's light from above. They stopped at the shore and Youngsaeng pulled out a glass bottle with a cork from his bag with a blank piece of paper and a pen.
"What's that for?" Hyunjoong asked curiously.
"The game. You write a wish on the piece of paper," Youngsaeng instructed as he did so and rolled it up. "And then you slip it in the bottle, tightly screw the cork on."
Youngsaeng took off his shoes and socks and rolled up his pants.
"Youngsaeng, what are you doing? You know you can't touch water," Hyunjoong said quickly as he grabbed the boy's arm.
The latter smiled. "As long as it didn't touch the cross, it's okay."
He waded into the water until it was up to the middle of his calf. There, he placed the bottle in the water and it drifted off. "If you let it drift off with the sea, someday, your wish will come true."
Hyunjoong rolled his eyes. "How can that possibly make a wish come true?"
Youngsaeng sighed. "Do you want to try this? Wishing on a star and a comet made your wish come true, didn't it?"
"I mean... You're all I ever wished for," the older boy continued as he hugged the latter from behind.
The boy smiled and watched as the bottle, containing his wish, drifted into the night. Hyunjoong took his hand. "Come on, it's cold out at sea at night. Let's go back before you catch a cold."
Youngsaeng pecked Hyunjoong on the lips. "Neh~"
The two headed back and got back to school a while after class ended. Mr. Ryu walked over to them, his arms crossed. "And where were you two during class?"
Hyunjoong grinned. "At the sea."
"Hm? Doing what?" Onew questioned.
Youngsaeng replied this time. "Playing a game."
From that day, Youngsaeng would go out the the sea, at times alone and usually with Hyunjoong, to write a wish in the bottle and send it out to sea. Every time, he wished for the same thing. Two weeks later, Hyunjoong asked him. "What are you wishing for so diligently?"
Youngsaeng turned back as he stood in the water. "For Hyunjoong to become smarter."
"Ya!" the latter exclaimed with a pout. "I'm already smart enough!"
"I'm joking, joking," the younger boy laughed. "For us to have one more day together."
Hyunjoong stood up and brushed the sand off of his jacket as he walked towards the boy, wading into the water and holding Youngsaeng's hand. "My wish is still the same."
"What is it?"
"For you to stay forever with me. Will you?"
Youngsaeng smiled. "Of course. I'll be beside you forever."
