Staring blankly ahead, Doctor Kim Taeyeon forgot to breathe for a while. The room was quiet. The faint ticking from the watch she wore was the only sound that can be heard. Slowly, she averted her gaze to the long white coat that hanging on the other chair in front of her. It was fresh from the laundry this morning. She had not worn it yet – probably would never wear it ever again.

Taking a deep breath, the cardiothoracic surgeon rubbed her weary eyes. She had her share of not sleeping for days. Unfortunately, the source of the lack of sleep recently was not because of surgery. Instead, it was because of a lawsuit.

She knew the risks of the job she did. She chose this job despite all of those risks because it was worth it. It was her passion. She had never really thought it’d come to this. After all she had done to their loved one, they’d dared to sue her.

It was weird to be in her office instead of the OR at time like this. It was also odd to wear formal outfit instead of scrubs and that long lab coat. The hospital freed her from elective and emergency surgery so she could focus more on this urgent matter. ‘Free’, a polite word as an alternative to ‘we put you under probation because we couldn’t afford you losing control again.’

Whatever.

Someone knocked the door.

“Doctor Kim?”

Taeyeon increased her brow, silently asking the man what did he want.

“Your attorney is here. She’s in the conference room.”

“I’ll be right there.”

Unwillingly, Taeyeon dragged her feet. The conference room was merely three rooms away from her office. From the vertical blinds, she could recognize some of the attending.
