24 - The big brother ...

The Endless War

“Shouldn’t you be in bed?” A familiar deep voice spoke from the doorway of the art studio.

“I couldn’t sleep” Yoon Mi answered, staring at her handiwork. “What about yourself?” She turned her neck to face Yong Guk. “Shouldn’t you be in bed as well?”

“The same reason as you” He leaned against the table beside her.

Laughing bitterly “Staying up because you’re haunted by memories of a dead lover?” Yoon Mi raised an eyebrow at him.

“Not exactly a lover but haunted nonetheless” He gave a deep sounding chuckle that oddly sounded nice to her ears.

Sitting there in a contemplative silence, “Do you think I’ll be able to get over the pain?” Yoon Mi asked him as she rested her chin in her hand.

“I don’t know” Yong Guk answered as he hummed in thought. “Time makes the pain bearable to live with. But I don’t think that we can ever be able to fully get over the pain”

“I wonder how long it will take for me” she sighed as she held her hand over her heart.

Every time she closed her eyes he was there along with that pang of emotion that washes over her.

As his observant eyes scanned her face, Yong Guk got up to stand in front of her. Taking in her dark eye rings, it had been days since her conversation with Him Chan and a day since Dae Hyun woke up from his sleep.

Unconsciously, his hands reached up to touch her eye rings.

*Should I get either one of them to make her fall asleep?* He contemplated the choices before he decided against it.

“You have to sleep sometime soon you know?” Yong Guk gently reminded Yoon Mi who was currently in shock at the close contact.

Only used to having one guy in her life, she wasn’t used to the attention nor the interaction with other guys. At least not those close to her age…

Finding her voice caught in “I-I t-tried. But n-no matter how m-much I willed mys-self asleep, I c-couldn’t…” Yoon Mi stuttered as the memories that came with the night resurfaced.

The memories that she loved so dearly that it hurts.

Hot tears streamed down her face as she moved away from Yong Guk. Getting up and shuffling past a few standing easels.

Following her for her safety, she came to a stop in front of a huge canvas.

It was a long horizontal painting that was taller than the both of them. There weren’t any people in the painting, just scenery. But it held such a deep sadness to it.

Sitting down before the painting, from afar it looked as if she was sitting under the painted tree.

Yong Guk patted her head as he took a seat beside her, gently saying “I know, the first few months are hard. Your heart feels numb to everything and you wish with all of your being that they would come back but you know better than anybody that they can’t.”

Moving his hand from the crown of her head down to the back of her neck, the warmth from his hand sent shivers down her spine as he maintained eye contact with her. “You wish that they didn’t leave you behind to walk this earth on your own. The things that you would exchange just to see their smile one more time, to hear their laugh again, to hear your name from their lips for that one last time”

“How –” Yoon Mi asked in wide eyed wonder. “Do I understand your pain so well?” Yong Guk finished her sentence for her.

“My past is similar to yours” He simply said as he turned to look at the painting. Not wanting to delve into his past for tonight, hearing of Him Chan’s story a few days ago. Yong Guk was sure that Yoon Mi didn’t need another sad story. *Not tonight* He thought. Not with her tired, exhausted and sleep deprived.

Another silence falling between them, Yong Guk saw that Yoon Mi was fighting her eyelids to stay awake, dozing off here and there as she swayed left and right.

*That’s it* He thought, getting to his feet Yong Guk put an arm around her back and the other under her legs. Lifting her up carefully, he walked quietly so that she wouldn’t stir.

Opening her eyes to the sound of a heartbeat, Yoon Mi felt that she was being carried and as her vision cleared up. She realised that Yong Guk was carrying her!

Letting a gasp escape her lips, she didn’t know what to do. If she struggled she might fall out of his arms and onto the floor…

Hearing her gasp, Yong Guk looked at her briefly as he climbed up the stairs. “You’re awake? I’m bringing you to your bedroom; you were dozing off in the studio” He explained.

“I-it’s okay, I can walk” She stuttered, feeling embarrassed.

“Don’t be embarrassed, this isn’t the first time I carried you” He said as he reached the top of the stairs.

“Mwoh? This isn’t?” Yoon Mi answered back stunned. “Nope, the first time was when you passed out after hearing the news of your family. Second was the first time that I found you in the art studio” He said with ease as if she didn’t weigh anything in his arms.

Turning red, Yoon Mi couldn’t believe her ears.

“ I’m afraid I’m completely awake now” She said apologetically as they reached her bedroom.

Setting her down gently on her bed, Yoon Mi scratched the back of her neck feeling incredibly self conscious.

Pulling up a chair and taking a seat, he smiled as he gave her an offer “If you want I can talk with you until you feel sleepy like just now”

“You would do that?” She looked at him nervously. “I would” He nodded in reply.

“We can talk about anything; just not my past” He gave an apologetic smile as well “I think you have enough sad stories for the week.”

“How do you how that I’ve been hearing sad stories?” Yoon Mi looked at him with confusion.

“I was outside the kitchen when Him Chan was talking to you.” He looked down at his hands as he spoke truthfully. “I felt that it wasn’t a moment that I should interrupt so I stood there for awhile. Hearing you cry at his past, I knew that I shouldn’t walk in so I decided that I’d come back to the kitchen later on.”

“Oh” was all she could say as his thoughtfulness left her with nothing to say.

“Is there anything you want to talk about?” Yong Guk asked, hoping that she wouldn’t be mad at him for eavesdropping.

“How was it like when you first came here?” Yoon Mi asked, wondering how he coped with the pain in the afterwards.

Laughing slightly at the questions, mainly because of the stark difference between then and now “It was very different when I first came her Yoon Mi.” Yong Guk smiled at the changes between then and now. Glad that things had gone for the better even though they had their bumps.

“At that point of time Dae Hyun was the only one here with Elder Yong. I came in here with Zelo a few years after Dae Hyun.

Elder Yong brought in Him Chan a few years later followed by Young Jae and Jong Up. Yong Jae is close to Dae Hyun because of their close age and Jong Up with Zelo as well.” Yong Guk recalled, remembering things that had happened many years back.

“It was almost a year since my incident when I met Zelo as I stayed on the streets and in the slums. A few months later Elder Yong found us…so I wasn’t entirely depressed when I reached this house.” He rubbed the back of his neck, feeling sorry that he didn’t have any coping mechanism to tell her. Considering he wasn’t brought over by someone in the family like she was.

“However because of Elder Yong’s busy schedule and ‘unfatherly’ ways, Dae Hyun was a much darker person in the past…At times he would refuse to eat or drink anything and sometimes he would have anger problems when his memories were too much for him to bear. He changed a lot over the years” Yong Guk smiled at the good changes made.

“You’re like the big brother to the guys here” Yoon Mi said quietly.

Giving that deep chuckle again “I guess I am” he shrugged. “I can’t help but be the big brother when I see them.”

“I wonder what it’s like to have you for an older brother” She said absentmindedly as she hugged her knees.

Laughing out loud to her statement “I’m not sure if you’d want to have me for an older brother” His eyes turning into crescents as he laughed on “I bully my dongsaengs a lot so I’m not sure if you want to be on that receiving end” Calming down after a bit, Yong Guk realised that she saw still seated up rather than lying on the bed and trying to fall asleep.

Resting his chin in his hand he told her “You should be lying down rather than sitting up you know?”

“But it feels strange to talk to someone while lying down” she complained.

“No buts” Yong Guk answered, yanking the blankets from under her feet and placed a hand on her shoulder to get her to lie down. “If we’d done this earlier I’m sure you would have fallen asleep by now”

“No I wouldn’t” She muttered under her breath. “I’m sorry what was that you said?” Yong Guk teasingly placed a hand by his ear pretending to strain his hearing to hear what she said.

Even though he could hear her perfectly with his vampiric hearing, it was still fun to pull her leg.

“Sleep” He emphasized, telling her to close her eyes. “I don’t do this often but I’ll sing a song for you to fall asleep”

“Can you sing?” Yoon Mi opened an eye worriedly, unsure of his singing capabilities.

“Can I sing? Phish, you should learn that you shouldn’t doubt someone like me” He gave a confident smile. “Just close your eyes and try to fall asleep alright?”

Doing as he says, Yoon Mi closed her eyes and hoped that he could really sing like he said.

*Please ignore the screaming fangirls and truck's honking >.< I hate it but his singing is just too ASDFGHJKL&$#@!#!! Why do you do this to us BABYs??*

Hearing his first line, she was taken aback. Who knew that his deep voice could sound so gentle?

Turning sideways to sleep better and so that her hair would cover her face. Yoon Mi hoped that he couldn’t see her blushing.

Finding herself relaxing to his voice, she was slowly drifting away until she eventually dozed off.

Sensing that she was finally asleep, Yong Guk stopped singing and smiled at her relaxed expression.

Brushing the stray strands of her that covered her face, he couldn’t resist breaking out into another smile when he saw that her cheeks were flushed.

Remembering something that Yi Jae once said to him, Yong Guk laughed silently so that he wouldn’t wake Yoon Mi up. He didn’t expect what she said so many years ago to actually come true.

*Especially not with Yoon Mi.* He thought as he quietly left the room. *I hope you have dreamless sleep Yoon Mi* He hoped for her as he looked at her one last time before closing the door.
