Drawing the Line

Jungkook paused outside Soa’s class after the bell had rung with a small smile on his face. He found happiness in spending some time with the girl he had become acquainted to, and was proud enough to call her a friend of his. He didn’t mind that she wasn’t popular. God he didn’t really even care about that. Soa was a cool girl and had her head upon her shoulders. Even with that cold façade, he got a glimpse of her true self getting revealed little by little, scratch by scratch as he tried scraping it off her. Her coldness; she did it because of a reason, an unknown one to Jungkook but still, the boy believed that one couldn’t live to the fullest without a positive mindset.

He was still unsure why the heck J-Hope loved bullying her, when she was one of the coolest girls that wouldn’t follow him around all day and stalk him till the bathrooms.

A scraping of a chair brought him out of his mometary daze, and as he leaned his head over the door ready to flash the girl a boyish grin, it slid off his face instantly when he noticed the figure standing beside her, chattering loudly like they had been best friends for years. His breath caught in his throat, and he gulped with wide eyes about to pop out of his sockets.

What in the world is she doing here?

No, Jungkook must have made a mistake. There was no way Lee Hani was standing there so casually with one feminine hand poised atop her hip, while the other was toying with her hair the same way she used to during their childhood years. He couldn’t, wouldn’t believe it. she had had to move away all of a sudden after middle school, so why return now? He blinked and rubbed his eyes to make sure he wasn’t dreaming, to make sure that this wasn’t just illusion and that she was really standing there only a few feet away from where he was rooted on the spot.

Soa suddenly turned and met his eyes. Her brown orbs widened a fraction when he pulled his lips into a tight smile, nodding at her and raising his book to make her realize that they did have a tutorial class to attend. He watched as the girl turned to the other and excused herself before making her way over to him.

“Hi!” Lee Hani bounded right after the quiet girl, beaming as Jungkook just watched her with a dead look in his eyes. So she didn’t recognize him? Had he changed that much? He wanted to scoff at the manicured fingers stretching out and waiting for his greeting and mentally rolled his eyes. Seriously Lee Hani? You don’t remember me?

“I’m Lee Hani” the familiarity of her gummy smile took him aback for a minute. He blinked and recomposed himself, choking out “I’m Jungkook”

“Nice to meet you!”

So she didn’t even blink at the mention of his name. At least that should have rung a bell inside her mind right?

Apparently not. Her eyes didn’t give anything away either. They were blank and twinkling with nothing but interest.

“Yeah” He may have sounded blunt and cold when he turned to Soa a second after and said “Let’s go” But if he kept staring at her like she was a monkey in the zoo, she might start wondering exactly what was wrong, and he didn’t want that. He was scared that something might blurt out of his mouth he can think rationally, and before he knew it himself, his own hand had taken a hold of the girl’s arm and his feet were walking briskly across the floor like fire was on the black of his heels. Soa blinked a the way he was suddenly acting. Why, he had been smiling like a fool a second ago! Why did his aura change so fast? Was it because of Hani?

“Soa” Jungkook whipped her around and grabbed onto her shoulder, his gaze ablaze with a spark of panic that sprung out of nowhere. She frowned and winced upon feeling his fingers curl onto her arms, nails practically digging into his skin. It hurt when he did that, and she guessed that he realized it a minute later when he relaxed his hold slightly on her.

She blinked. What’s wrong this time?

His brown orbs were flitting around and about, unable to keep still. It didn’t help either that he was biting his lip like it was a piece of meat. Just a little bit more and he might tear the skin off.

“Jungkook” She placed a hand onto his lower lip and pulled it away, looking up at him and frowning some more “Stop biting your lip. It’s gonna bleed”

He sighed, ruffling his hair.

How was he supposed to tell her something she wasn’t even aware of?

“Jungkook” Her voice was flat and stable now, her eyes remote and serious. “What’s wrong?”

Soa had never seen this side of Jungkook. The dark side, and she wasn’t prepared for it either, so if he was going to go all Ape on her today wasn’t an appropriate day to lose his mind.

Anything but.

“Just-“ He took a deep breath “Stay away- from Hani. Please”

“Wae?” why so suddenly? Did he even know her in the first place? Questions of the sort popped up into the girl’s mind and caused her to frown even more.

“Trust me on this. Please, stay away”

He hated the way her eyes flashed with something that looked like pain. But what he hated even more was that he couldn’t in the world read what was going on through her mind. She was driving him crazy. Just a second ago her gaze was filled with confusion and sudden shock, but now it was back to normal, back to being cold and cut-off from the world. He didn’t blame her however, for trying to conceal her real feelings from the world. It must for people to deceive you over and over again, but he hoped that just this once she would at least trust him.

“Give me a valid reason as to why I can’t be friends with her” Soa answered in a clipped voice.

Jungkook winced slightly “I’m really not the one-“

“-Why are you so judgmental?” she cut him off with a scowl growing darker each second.

“I’m not. Look Soa, it’s not because she’s bad or anything on the contrary-“

“Okay.”

The speed of her reply caught him flabbergasted, his face morphing into a frown when he realized that the girl’s thoughts hadn’t budged one bit. She had closed up on herself again, her eyes a hard wall, her stance one of a warrior’s preparing for battle, and her fists clenched like she was trying to keep a hold of the sanity and the cut-off way she always does with people.

This wasn’t helping.

“Soa” he started again with a more gentle tone “Don’t-“

“Okay. I said

He mentally sighed and cried out in frustration as to why she was being such a cold on the matter when all he wanted was to help her.

“Yah Soa-“

“I don’t want to talk about this anymore” her eyes shifted back to a dull and flat maroon, like she was someplace else altogether and the life had been out of her. When she turned away, Jungkook couldn’t resist but grab onto her arm and pull her back against his chest, burying his face into the crook of her neck as he inhaled the scent of comfort that enveloped Soa’s being.

The girl’s jaw fell open at his actions and initially tried to wriggle herself out of his grasp, crying ‘Yah! Stop it! Get off!” only to soften when the boy whispered, “Please trust me” in the smallest voice possible. Instead of looking like a full-grown young adult, Jungkook had been reduced to a small baby unsure of his first steps, and the fragility of his tone caused her to soften slightly and let him hug her for just a small moment more.

He released her a moment and Soa was certain that she had never felt so claustrophobic before. She literally could count on her right hand how many people she had hugged in her entire lifetime, and yet when Jungkook lent her the comfort of his embrace, her body’s response was to lean into him; to finally for once, let go of her worries and have someone there for her when things got hard. Her dad had never done such things with her, and her mother wasn’t a touchy type of person. Just like Soa, she preferred her personal space.

But once in a while, it was good to momentarily share your worries with someone else.

“So, let’s go study?” Jungkook cracked a smile.

She rolled her eyes at his question and started walking without waiting for him. The boy only pouted before running after her.
“Hey wait for me!”

Soa was about to turn the corner when someone grabbed her arm a bit too roughly, pulling her to the side and causing her to crash into another body. What the is going on today? She screamed in her thoughts when it all died down upon meeting J-Hope’s eyes.

“Soa, wait-“ Jungkook stopped in mid-stride and chuckled at the scene. “Oh, hi hyung”

“Jungkook, I’m taking her for today” J-Hope replied in a monotonous voice as the maknae only bobbed his head in response and flashed the girl one last smile. “I’ll see you later then, Soa”

“What? No wait-“ But the other boy had already started dragging her out of the school with the maknae waving goodbye like it was the most normal thing in the world for Jung Hosoek to be dragging a body in order to torture it to death. Well it was probably something Hoseok did do on a daily basis but Soa hadn’t imagined her fate would’ve ended like this in such a tragic way.

His grip only tightened when she tried squirming against him, his other arm taking a hold of her waist before hauling her up onto his shoulder like she was as light as pillow. The action somewhat surprised her and her eyes widened.

YAH!” She cried, kicking at his chest. J-Hope only winced but kept on walking. “Stop this! This is kidnapping! Yah let me down!”

He only rolled his eyes in response “You’re wasting your energy, Einstein”

Really, Soa hated being carried out like a puppet, and hated it all the more since it was her number one enemy that was carrying her like a sack of potatoes. She was almost certain that he would probably dump her into a river and let her drown to her sweet death while he watched with a victorious smirk on his face. Her eyes squeezed shut at the thought and she tried to control her breathing in order not to hyperventilate. She couldn’t lose control now; if she did she would be showing J-Hope another weakness of hers that she wasn’t ready to expose yet. Much less expose it to the one she especially didn’t want to see.

She sighed in relief when her feet touched the ground. Surprisingly, he let her down as gently as a wave would wash over the sand and she blinked at his sudden gentlemanly action. It wasn’t every day that the boy didn’t feel like being a towards her, and she only shook her head. Hoseok was one of a kind that was for sure. She never understood what exactly was going on in his mind.

Not that she wanted to know either.

“What do you think you’re doing, J-Hope-ssi?” She added sarcasm to the last words of her sentence.

“Are you busy?” it didn’t even look like he even listened to her words. His face was a mask that she couldn’t get through no matter how hard she tried. She thought that she looked quite the same with her poker face and all, so she couldn’t really judge him.

“None of your business” she mumbled

J-Hope’s eyes flashed in annoyance “You’re ing irritating”

“Right back at you” She shot back.

She was expecting him to make a grab for her neck and squeeze the life out of her right then and there, but surprisingly instead of doing so, he grabbed onto her wrist and pulled her down the road while saying, “Let’s walk”

Soa’s face scrunched up in part shock and part confusion “What?”

He was still pulling her behind him, his face turned away when she tried to get a good look at his eyes. His own maroon orbs were stuck to the windowpanes of the different shops they passed by, and Soa wanted nothing more but to hit some sense into that blockhead of his. Why was he so confusing? Why did he even pull her with him in the first place since they despised each other from the rock bottom of their souls? What the was going on inside of his mind?

She had never met someone as minding as this individual standing right before her very eyes. Excuse her for her vulgar language.

“Yah” she finally wrenched her hand away hard enough for him to let go, and when he turned to raise a brow at her disheveled figure, the frustration only accumulated inside of her. “I thought you hated me, what the are you doing?”

Leaning down to her level, Hoseok his face into hers and gazed deeply into her eyes while his voice came out much huskier and darker than he intended to, “You talk too much” Before grabbing her hand again and walking along the pavement, not minding the now red faced girl who just stared at his back like he had suddenly grown five heads.

They walked not quite side by side, but Hoseok could get used to that. Nothing was exchanged; no words or no gestures. It was just the silence enveloping both of them until they reached a certain grassy field made for leisurely activities.

Without any hesitation, the boy dropped down and lay onto his back, his arms crossed behind his head as he inhaled the scent of nature filling his nostrils. Soa blinked at his peaceful figure and swore that she had never seen that side of him, the calm side, the quiet and thoughtful side. She thought that this new side of Hoseok was much better. Without his quirky remarks or his ability to make her feel weak in the knees just by throwing her a glare or a scowl. And Hoseok without any insults was a good enough, one that could be tolerated.

Gingerly, she let herself sit down next to him and jumped when she felt his arms across her shoulders. “What the -“

He covered her head with his jacket and lied back down, his gaze averted when the girl looked at him with confusion on her face. “Geesh, don’t you know you should be careful of the sun? I thought that all girls these days brought umbrellas”

Oh, so it was because of the sun. He didn’t want her to burn to a crisp. In short, he cared about her.

A small tinge inside her heart vibrated and Soa bit her lip to stop a smile from crawling up onto her face. She didn’t know what she was supposed to feel, but being content and having J-Hope not act like a smartass bastard was enough for her, and she liked that.

He can be sweet when he wants, she muses and looks away to let the grin envelope her face.

“Why are you smiling? It’s creepy”

Her smile instantly disintegrated with a frown. She looked back at the boy lying on the ground and rolled her eyes. Forget him being sweet, she cursed inwardly as she reached over and slapped his arm.

“What the was that for?” he lazily opened one eye. “You think I’d get hurt with that?”

“Screw you”

“I don’t want to screw you, kid” He flicked her forehead and she flinched. “Yah, that hurt”

“No , Sherlock”

She made it clear to meet his eyes, realizing just how brown they looked in the afternoon sunlight. Unlike Jungkook’s soft brown chocolate orbs, Hoseok’s was a much more vibrant, a more excited kind of brown that mixed with specs of red, almost shining like one of a fox’s. she would lie to herself if she said that he wasn’t handsome. realizing that she still had something to ask him, she opened to murmur “Why did you drag me with you?’

“I don’t know”

That was quite of an honest answer.

“You’re not that bad though kid” He smirked half-heartedly. “You’re actually tolerable”

Soa raised a brow “You’re weird”

“right back at you” he mimicked her voice and she felt her blood boil.

“YAH!”
