Trying

Drawing the Line

Things drastically changed the next Monday.

Soa came to school without anyone tripping or pushing her, shoving her aside nor pulling her back in order to get the wrong bus. Her eyes were still flitting around from face to face, not having quite trusted the boy at his supposed promise, but she was surprised to say that there was no sign of him at all. A soft sight of relief slipped out of her opened mouth, sitting herself down and finally realizing that all this time, she had been this tense and nervous wrecking ball that wasn’t able to look up or around for fear of seeing him, of seeing what he might do to her. the fact that he wasn’t threatening her mere existence caused her body to relax slightly at the thought.

That wasn’t all.

When she reached her usual locker and swung it open, she was more than shocked when she felt a shadow lingering over her body, breaths hitting the nape of her neck while tingles raised goosebumps onto her flesh. Frowning and turning at the person in question, the annoyance fell from her face when she realized that it was none other than Jung Hoseok.

Was he going to hit her against the locker once again? Could he have forgotten everything he had done for her last Saturday? Did he forget how he seemed to cherish her body like it was his own? She could only blush back at the thought and bent her head down so that her gaze was fixed onto the front of his worn-out basketball high-tops.

“M-Morning”

Her head snapped up like a twig crackling under someone’s foot. Did she hear wrong? Or did he actually greet her like she was an equal or a human being?

She was imagining things now; there was no way that J-hope was being decent.

Their eyes clashed; surprised maroon meeting the dark chocolate as the boy looked away in embarrassment and cleared his throat loudly, brushing past her and going to his own locker. Soa gaped at his retreating figure and kept gawking like a hawk, with her jaw ajar. She didn’t fail to notice the sudden stomp of his foot while he ruffled his hair, a small ‘Aish!” leaving his lips.

twitched. Was he perhaps…nervous of her now?

“Hi Soa” Jungkook broke the bubble of her thoughts when he slung an arm around her shoulder jovially, like he hadn’t seen her for a year when it had merely been three days ago.

She rolled her eyes but tentatively pulled up into a soft smirk, almost a smile “Hey”

She shut her locker and walked down the hall with Jungkook accompanying her every step of the way to class, chattering on about his studies and how he hated them and if he could, he would probably be a fisherman roaming around the sea near Jeju Island to catch some good fish.

“But then again, I might starve to death’ he added as an afterthought.

“No , Sherlock” She replied evilly. The boy sent her a playful scowl “Not funny”

“Who’s laughing?” Soa blinked innocently, only to chuckle slightly when upon seeing his crestfallen face. Jungkook lit up at her sight of her showing some positive emotions, and threw her a wide grin. “You’re smiling!”

“Eh?” Instantly, it felt like ice-cold water hit her on the back for Soa’s mouth automatically turned down into a grimace “N-No I’m not”

“Wahh” he clapped his hands and pumped a fist upwards “If it continues like this, you might even be laughing out loud once the year is over”

Soa threw him a glare “Screw you Jungkook” She huffed “You didn’t see anything”

“Oh sure, I didn’t” he winked back.

“Soa!” Another voice interrupted their conversation, and Soa turned to see Hani bounding up to them with a flash of that billion-dollar smile once again. God, whenever Hani was around Soa felt like , tier than how she was already treated. The world was unfair in giving people good genes, and thus she was too caught up thinking how her life would’ve been much simpler if she was prettier to notice Jungkook’s gaze darken considerably at the apparition of the new individual.

“Hey” Soa nodded in greeting.

“You didn’t come last Friday. I was all alone” She pouted, then beamed “But you’re here now! Have you been sick?”

The latter nodded in hopes of not giving away the truth by her facial expressions. Just the reminder of not having come to school tinged a sense of recall in her memory as the thought of J-Hope’s touch lingered onto the parts of her body he had so intimately kissed. His touch made her blush to her toes and she tried toning it down by fanning her face in annoyance. Get it together Soa, it’s Hoseok, your worst enemy!

“-And I got my nails done. Soa, are you even listening to me?” Hani frowned while crossing her arms in front of her chest.

The girl bit her lip and mumbled “Sorry, I was thinking of something else”

Hani shook her head with a smile on her face “Always in a daze. Hi Jungkook!” She beamed at the boy like she had just caught sight of him when he had actually been standing here longer than she was next to Soa.

He cleared his throat “Hi” and looked away as soon as they made eye contact. He wasn’t about to become all touchy and clingy with her, he was way past that stage and anyway, she didn’t even recognize him in the first place.

“How was your weekend?” She titled her head cutely.

“Fine” He mumbled.

He should definitely tell J-Hope about her, otherwise the latter might just think that a ghost had come back to life and was haunting him for his wrongdoings.

He just hoped that his hyung wouldn’t lose a screw because of that.

Hani dragged Soa to the cafeteria even though the latter was protesting about having things do to. In truth, Soa had planned to meet Kimchi and had already packed some yummy leftovers that she was sure he would like. Unfortunately for her she was sat down at a table and for a moment, looked like a lost child with her eyes as wide as ping pong balls as she watched the students walk in clusters and small groups to go fetch food. She had never sat down in an area so full of people all at once and the suddenness of it rendered her speechless and shy.

She wished to go hide her face in a corner for she felt like everyone's were on her.

"Oppa?" Hani called. Soa, not knowing that she had a close boy friend, turned to meet eyes with J-Hope.

Her own orbs widened and her gaze flitted from the latter to the girl who was smiling brightly with flushed cheeks, a partially surprised hut pleasant look on her face.

"Hani?" Hoseok muttered, "What are you doing here?"

"I've been here for over a week oppa" she pouted slightly " It's been so long since we saw each other!"

Finally, after a small moment of hesitation that Hoseok's lips tilted into a soft smile. "It's nice to see you again"

"I missed you, oppa" Hani beamed at him.

The rest of BTS were following closely behind, and upon spotting the figure of the girl, froze in their tracks.

"Omo! Is that the BTS oppas?!" A squeak left and she cupped it with both hands. "Uh.." Jimin turned to Suga "hyung?"

"Don't look at me. I don't know her" Suga shrugged.

"Lee Hani, don't you remember who I am?" She said.

Their eyes rounded at her statement.

"Lee Hani?" Namjoon choked on his words " as in, Lee Hani from middle school?"

She nodded while a smile graced her lips. Soa was expecting a huge group hug along with wild exchanges of cheerful words at the prospect of meeting each other again after such a long time, but what shocked her was that the Bangtan Boys didn't even take a voluntary step towards her.

On the contrary, the seemed on the edge and tense, trying to hide behind each other like ducks behind their mother, who namely in this situation was J-Hope.

"Hi" V reluctantly greeted after an awkward silence ensued. A few string of words of acceptance left the group before they moved slowly to the table, surprising Soa even more when they plopped down on both her sides.

"Soa, fancy seeing you here" Jimin's flash of a smile was all so natural that she could almost forget the more than visible frown on his face seconds ago. "Aren't you eating?"

"I-" Jungkook's hand interrupted her when he stuffed a cookie into . She was more than taken aback by his sudden gesture and blinked, before realizing what je had just done and threw him a glare, mouthing a muffled "yah!"

"Sorry can't hear you~" Jungkook shrugged his shoulders, a teasing grin on his face "Is it good? I baked it myself”

She gulped down the piece of food before rasping “Liar”

“I did!” He protested, ears turning red in shame.

The boys fell about laughing at Soa’s expression.

“He actually did bake it by himself, Soa-ah” Suga grinned before stuffing a cookie in his mouth.

Namjoon chuckled, the sound vibrating deeply from his chest “I’m not the only one who didn’t believe in that”

“Oppa knows how to cook as well” Hani interrupted to point a finger at J-Hope’s figure, who blinked and frowned at her statement. Soa’s eyes widened; Hoseok cooking? Since when? She thought that he was a useless tool in the kitchen, just like most boys in that case, except for Jungkook who miraculously got gifted with the art of cooking although she was still suspicious of him actually baking those cookies.

“Don’t you, oppa?” Hani pressed on.

Hoseok’s lips clamped together as he replied through gritted teeth “Sure”

“You do?” Jin raised a dyed brown eyebrow “I never once saw you cooking”

“Why would I if you’re there, hyung?” Hoseok chuckled. “That’s your job”

“I tasted his cooking once” Taehyung chirped while lifting his hand “ It wasn’t bad” then added “then again, it was just ramen”

The table burst out laughing again, and even Soa’s mouth couldn’t resist from tugging widely at the corners.

Her eyes suddenly met with Hoseok’s from across the table and both gazes stilled on each other like glue had been applied on a piece of wood, not letting go no matter how hard you tried pulling it away. She felt this magnetic force, like a shield urging her towards him while he was busy admiring her eyes; relishing in the mysterious flocks of swirls that he couldn’t decipher that easily through her gaze. Most people were easy to read just by glancing at their faces and unfortunately Soa wasn’t one of them. He was always wondering what was on her mind. But the more he tried, the harder it was to comprehend the different shades of emotion present in her eyes, there were too many swirls, too intermingled with each other to be able to be pushed and pulled apart one by one.

It was driving him crazy.

Correction. She was driving him crazy.

Her skin had been so soft when his lips had come to kiss it. He pictured the pinkish glow that she couldn’t hide no matter how hard she tried, almost imagining himself over and over again pressing his mouth and lingering into her scent that seemed to smell of cherries and a natural minty forest.

Hoseok had to grab onto the table for sanity’s sake when she moved her eyes away, the intensity of her stare burning at the back of his skull like wildfire. Soa in the meantime stood up abruptly and reminded herself that she still had Kimchi to feed. So excusing herself from the crowd, she made her way out of the cafeteria and declined Jungkook’s offer to walk her to wherever she was supposed to go.

It was obvious that the worry in Jungkook’s eyes about her safety was something that even Soa feared, but she wasn’t going to spend her life depending on him, for god’s sake. He was a good friend, but this was her fight and thus didn’t want him to get meddled in this mess.

He had already done so much for her.

“Kimchi!” a relieved sigh left her lungs as she spotted said dog wagging its tail by the greenhouse, tongue already out in anticipation of the food she had prepared for him this time.

Smiling for real this time, the girl bent down and settled the food in front of him, caressing his soft fur as she watched him eat with a vigor that could only show appreciation and joy. It amazed her how such simplistic things could make animals happy.

Sometimes, she wished that humans were that simple to understand as well.

Finished, the dog pressed it’s side against her leg, whining softly. Soa scooped him up in her arms and scratched behind his ears “So much has been going on lately” She sighed “it’s amazing how everything just came all at once”

She looked at him “Are you lonely here all by yourself?”

The dog only her hand in reply, scrubbing his face against her palm. “I guess you are” she mumbled to herself while looking up at the vast sky “My life’s so screwed up”

“So you talk to dogs now?”

Soa jumped out of her skin in shock, gasping and turning to find that one person she wished hadn’t followed at that moment. Out of all people, it just had to be him that was suddenly on his annoying mood, which is why he followed her. it was probably because he had nothing better to do. He should go and socialize with Hani or whatever, she thought crossly while burying the puppy’s face in her chest and throwing him the fiercest glare she could muster.

“What are you doing here? Stop following me”

He shuffled towards her so casually her hand curled in temptation to hurl it at his pretty face. “You’re not that important. Who said I was following you?”

“Why are you here then?”

“Fresh air”

“Fresh air my foot. Nobody comes here”

Hoseok only raised a brow “You’re talking as if this is your property”

“Hoseok-ssi” She scrubbed her face with one hand, tried and weary from having to deal with him on a day to day basis “Stop it. Please, just stop”

“What?” he frowned. What had he done wrong now?

“I thought you were supposed to make it up to me” She shot back at him. The last words flashed through her mind while her skin tingled with the memory of his lips on her flesh. Soon enough, blod had rushed to her cheeks like a fire engine.

“I am”

“No you’re not. You’re only pissing me off”

Hoseok rolled his eyes “I’m ing trying okay? But it won’t help if you’re being such a about it”

“I’m not-‘ Soa’s words caught in somehow “I’m not being a about it”

“Yes you are” he growled “I followed you for a reason, ungrateful brat”

“The only reason you followed me was just to pester the life out of me!”

Sighing in frustration, he raked a hand through his hair and mumbled something incoherent. Soa frowned and asked “What was that?”

He mumbled again this time loud enough so that she could make sense of his words. Something like “I was scared you’d be bullied’ crossed his lips and the girl was left half astounded by his words. Was she dreaming? Had Hoseok finally come to his senses? Was he feeling guilty enough now for all the damage he has done?

“Jung Hoseok has a heart after all” she muttered to herself. His ears were as sharp as one of a rabbit’s though, and they perked up.

“What’s that supposed to mean?” He huffed gruffly and avoided he gaze.

“Oh my god” Soa teasingly put a hand over he heart and sniggered “Hoseok is blushing. Well there’s something new”

“I-I- What the are you talking about?!” he looked away “I don’t blush”

“You do!” She pressed on, a sudden strike of courage simmering in her stomach as she got up and walked towards him, tilting her head in fake amazement while his blush got all the darker. He pushed her away in annoyance. “Stop it” he growled.

Soa once again felt goosebumps rise onto her arms. “Oh, I’m scared”

He took a step towards her “You should be”

“Well I’m not” She took a step closer as well

“You’re being a again” He took another step.

“You’re the one who’s acting like a ” they were practically nose to nose now glaring daggers while wishing that they could abash their enemies with virtual weapons.

“What’s this about making it up to me huh?” Tilting her lips into a smirk, Soa rolled her eyes “You’re not really doing a good job out of it”

“And you’re not making it any easier-“ He was about to take another step when he tripped on the step separating the ground and the greenhouse, his body floating momentarily in the air until gravity pulled him down and caused him to crash against Soa. Both toppled over onto each other, limbs and arms entangled in a mess as they hit the ground violently.

Thud!
