Full of Surprises

Drawing the Line

Namjoon watched Hani from the corner of his eye and flinched once again when he caught a whiff of her scent. These past few days, his heart had been restless, stopping him from sleeping peacefully at night. His thoughts always drifted back to the said girl that monopolized his dreams and fantasies. He tried to erase her and kid himself that he could move on and still be friends, but this fate was getting harder and harder by the second. Every minute he’d smell her, or feel her skin against him whether she’d just brush arms or touch his shoulder. It triggered some reactions that Namjoon wanted to leave in the dark.

Now, as he watched her cut up an apple on the counter with her hair falling over her face, he couldn’t help admiring the way her eyebrows scrunched up in concentration and her lips that curled into a soft downturn whenever she failed to do so.

It was the day of the exam results, and Hani was definitely stressing. He could see it in the border of her pupils, how they were distant and didn’t seem to be there, really. Plus, her hands were shaking with a tremble of anxiety that could have slipped the eye of any individual, but not Namjoon. He knew her well enough to understand her small quirks and gestures. She had asked him if he could accompany her to the school hall as she wouldn’t have the courage to do it herself if she did, and knowing that Soa was with J-Hope and Chohee with Jungkook, he reluctantly agreed to accompany her while cursing in his mind at the unfairness of trying to control himself throughout the entire event.

Finally, after silently standing to the side and passively watching the girl try and bottle up her feelings, he decided to intervene by himself because he was sure that she’d never get to the end of it. So with his long fingers, he reached over to remove the fruit from her own and decided to cut it. When he was done, he reached over and placed it in a Tupperware before handing it to the speechless girl.

“Stop stressing, you’ll be fine,” He murmured, grasping her arm to pull her to her front door due to the lack of time.

“What if I fail?” Hani’s lip trembled.

“You can’t fail”

Her narrowed eyes did nothing to scare him, he was so used to it, “You’re not helping, Joon”

He failed to ignore the skip in his heartbeat at her use of endearment, and looked away long enough to stabilize himself before answering casually, “Well, you chose me out of everybody to stay with you, so I’m guessing you must have a very good reason”

“Remind me why again,” She muttered under her breath as they exited her house and he handed her a helmet. Once again, he watched her struggle put it on and shook his head, chuckling when he reached over to slip it past her scalp and remove her hair out of the way. Hani stilled for a moment when he tucked some stray hands from her cheek, looking up at him while trying to piece her confusion together. Namjoon only cleared his throat and moved back like she had burnt him upon realizing his actions.

He coughed to evade the awkward atmosphere, “let’s go”

Hani felt the blush furiously engulfing her face from the moment she held onto Namjoon’s waist all the way to her school, and felt like hitting herself for seeming so pathetic in his eyes. Namjoon didn’t like her that way, Namjoon probably never would at her more than a mere sister, and she had told herself that it was the best reason for her as well. Although, why did it feel like her heart quivered every time when she thought about it? It struck her as she gazed at his strong back that maybe, just maybe she felt a little more spark. Or was it just her gratefulness because he had done many things for her and had stuck by her side when no one did? Had believed that there was goodness in her when the world thought she had been pure evil?

The thought of his hand wrapping around hers and him giving her forehead a kiss played throughout her muddled thoughts and coloring with red, she bowed her head down and didn’t dare look up at her surroundings, thinking to herself that she must look quite desperate and too pathetic of an excuse in his eyes for him to even think of her as a love interest.

“Hani” his husky tenor sent her jumping in shock. Surprised, she looked up at him to realize that they had already reached the gates and that the boy was hovering over her, a befuddled frown of confusion gracing his face. She bit her lip and attempted to remove the helmet while avoiding his eyes, how the hell was she supposed to look at him when every time she did, she got reminded of the unlikely possibility of him returning the love she bared?

She quite liked Namjoon.

She saw him as a man.

But he sure didn’t see her as a woman.

“Hani”

Her nerves failed her and caused her body to jump again, and Namjoon couldn’t help but frown in genuine worry and put a stable hand onto her forearm, grasping her in place in case she fell, “Are you alright? You look pale”

“I’m-“ She practically choked on her own spit. Since when had his grip been so warm? “I’m fine”

He heard her, but alas did not let go of her arm. Instead, he slid his hand down to her wrist and held it lightly between his fingers. Hani felt the bile rise once again to as they made way to the hall, but forced her feet to keep their pace when all she felt like doing was turn back and run away from the painful truth that told her whether she was to pass or to fail. Having never been bright in academics, she was always struggling to even get those averages, staying up until late and trying to compress everything in her head, only to feel like she had never even studied in the first place when the paper was delivered in front of her.

There were a lot of students milling about in the hallway, chattering excitedly and pointing towards the huge board where their near futures were to be decided. Hani gulped down once again the dried up saliva and tried to get herself to breathe out calmly through her nose. The only thing that was helping her right now was Namjoon’s hand securely giving her the reassurance she needed.

When they reached the front, she didn’t hesitate to hide her face in his shoulder, whimpering slightly. Namjoon looked over at her with a befuddled expression crossing his face. “Yah, come on, there are a lot of people here”

Hani shook her head and her grip onto his arm tightened considerably, mumbling incoherent words in his shirtsleeve.

“What?”

She mumbled once again, this time loud enough for him to understand, “You check it”

“Yah,” He chuckled, “these are your results”

A whine falling from her lips was enough to curl up his own, and as he looked down at her shying her face away like a cute puppy, he couldn’t help but think how cute her reactions were.

Looking up at the board score, he quickly identified her name and his breath caught once his gaze settled upon the two-digit number that glowed red on the black screen.

“Hani,” He breathed, not wanting to believe it, “Hani, you passed”

“What?!” She looked up and checked her own test score, eyes widening at the digit and wondering whether they had made a mistake when counting.

But there was no denying the big red lettered 70/100 written next to her name.

“And you said that you were failing” he turned her to her before a smile danced across his lips, his dimples flashing on his cheeks.

“What-No-This must be a mistake-“ She babbled, her thoughts spinning, jumping about, unable to take in the mere fact that she had passed beautifully, much higher than what she had been expecting. She looked back towards the board, then to Namjoon, back to the board and back at his deep set eyes smiling down at her with a sort of tenderness that melted her heart.

And then she started crying.

“Y-Yah, why are you crying?” He quickly reached over to wipe away her tear, chuckling a little as the girl sniffed loudly and suddenly looked up to meet his eyes, her own brown orbs full of blossoming happiness and joy with the realization dawning upon her.

She laughed, the tears of joy still streaming down her face into cascade of crystal jewels, before jumping into Namjoon’s arms and doing what she had been wanting to do from the day she had promised herself the wish upon a shooting star.

Her lips pressed onto his own for a short instant as she jumped up, enough to make him go wide-eyed before she was already back down with determination glinting in her maroon irises.

“I promised myself to confess to you if ever I passed” she said the words with so much courage, unlike the girl he knew of. He was more than surprised to see that altered personality, not that he was complaining, “So now you know, I like you, very much”

He got stuck at the words ‘I like you’, the wheels in his brain suddenly stopping to a halt as he took in this information. He was silent and staring at her for such a long time and with such intensity that she felt herself squirming under his gaze, her eyes starting to flutter about to keep herself from running away.

“I-It’s okay if you don’t like me back, I just wanted you to know-“ He pulled her by the arm before she got the chance to say any more, covering her protests with a firm kiss as he laid his hand at the nape of her neck to keep her still. Hani’s eyelids fluttered shut at the contact, letting herself, this once, to feel the love that she had yearned for during so many years. His lips on hers were out of this world; she couldn’t start to explain the roaring waves of emotion bubbling up inside her stomach. She felt like flying and like drowning at the same time, Namjoon being the only stable object that she had to hold onto. Her hands unconsciously went up to his shoulders, tightening her grip on his leather jacket.

“Ahem.”

They jumped away as if burned by the contact, both rubbing their napes and avoiding each other’s looks.

In front of them, Soa and J-Hope were sporting -eating grins on their faces. Soa even had the audacity to wriggle her eyebrows playfully at Namjoon, who only frowned and rolled his eyes.

“Sorry to disturb, but I just wanted to congratulate you, Hani” Soa coughed back a chuckle.

“Oh, uh, thank you” Hani smiled back at the former and asked in return, “What did you get?”

“81”

“Wah, that’s so good!” Hani smiled genuinely, the girl who was always faking her emotions not present any more, “I’m so glad for you!”

“Thank you” Soa let out a small smile of her own, loving how Hani had really, although slowly, changed into a better person. She was also glad that Namjoon was there for her because as she watched them, she could feel their chemistry sizzling in the air, still hot from their lingering touches just mere seconds away. Therefore, not wasting any time, she reached for Hoseok’s sleeve and tugged him away with a teasing smile gracing her face, “Well, we’ll leave you two at it, continue doing whatever you were doing”

At her statement it was no wonder that both faces flamed with embarrassment.

It wasn’t the other couple was completely out of sight that the tall boy sighed and looked over to notice how she was trying her best not to look his way. He had never seen this side of Hani before; the shy and flustered Hani hidden away in those layers of confidence and flirtatious attitude. Knowing that he’d be the only one from now on caused his heat to flutter rapidly in his chest. Namjoon reached over before grabbing her hand in his, loving the way they fit so well like a missing puzzle piece.

Hani only looked down to gulp at their hands, and she didn’t even have time to register it when he suddenly interlaced their fingers together, squeezing softly.

The girl gasped and looked up to his maroon orbs swirling with hints of affection and slight tenderness. He threw her a sweet, dimpled smile, like a little boy getting caught staring at his crush, “What you staring at?”

“N-Nothing” She looked back down at the perfect picture of their interlinked fingers and her own face broke into a wide smile that she was unable to control.

This felt real; this was what being happy felt like.

But then, she threw Namjoon a smirk once they reached his motorcycle once again, a mischievous glint in her eyes, “Wait, that means that my feelings aren’t one sided, right?”

She did not fail to notice the blush arising at the back of his neck, “I guess not”

Soa had already prepared everything for Hoseok's birthday one week in advance, knowing it all like the back of her hand and yet she still felt this nervous fluttery feeling at the edge of her stomach just at the mere thought of it. But this was her chance to show him how much he meant to her, to demonstrate her love for him, to make him realize what a perfect and beautiful being he was, inside and out. Of all the things he'd done for her, she was grateful. Utterly grateful for his presence at her side. He had always been there, whether at her best or at her worst, and what was even more surprising was that he never let go of her, no matter how stubborn or annoying she was.

She wanted him to feel how beautifully he decorated her swollen, bruise scattered nights with stars that shone and illuminated all the scars on her body, all the wounds she possessed. And yet, she didn't mind, didn't mind exposing her wrongs and her bad sins to him because she knew deep down that he'd accept it one way or another, and let the sunlight bathe her with hope.

"Something's wrong" he had asked once, frowning in suspicion at the way she kept fiddling with her fingers and looking about, unable to meet his gaze. Soa only bit her lip and shook her head, flashing him a look of utter innocence.

"Why aren't you looking at me then?" He pressed on.

Soa lifted her face and momentarily met gazes with him, "I am"

He regarded her for a moment longer, but then decided to shrug it off as the girl breathed a sigh of relief. She was so used to telling him every single thing on her mind after they had promised each other that no secrets should be kept, that it felt weird to keep things from him, although it was for his own good and more importantly that he was the center of the secret in the first place.

"Ey, you really do love him" Chohee had remarked once upon catching her gazing off into the distance once again. It was weird how her friend could even distinguish the minimal changes of her features, and it didn't help Soa in the least as the girl hated it when people could read her so easily. Unfortunately, her expressions were too spontaneous for that to happen.

Soa had stiffened at her remark, "w-whatever."

"Ey, you're blushing~" her friend singsonged and sighed with exaggeration, "I wish my boyfriend would do something like that as well"

"Just ask him to" Soa retorted back.

"You know him, he's so awkward sometimes"

She had to agree that Hoseok was indeed very affectionate, even more these days. Of course, his hand would always find it's rightful place at her waist, his nose nuzzling her neck and his fingers entangling with hers to close the gaps separating them. But his lips would linger a bit more, hovering over her skin, his hands traveling more sensually over her skin, and his eyes holding her own with such a burning intensity that it was almost intimidating at times.

On the very d-day of his birthday, she had called in sick for him, telling to his assistant that he was taking a day off due to a cold, and that he was ordering for a day without any calls or derangements. Then, tiptoeing to the couch- she had ordered another bed for part of his birthday present- she shut off his alarm so that the boy would have no reason to wake up early for nothing. He deserved that day off, he was looking more and more tired every time she took another look at him.

When he woke up at 11 o'clock, he had jumped up and was busy rushing about when

Soa emerged from the kitchen with her hands crossed over her chest in mild amusement. It was a comical sight to see the calm and collected J-Hope running around frantically like the world was about to end.

"Hey Hobie" she called out to him. It was only then that he realized her presence, turning to send her a frustrated look, "why didn't you wake me up?! I'm late to work!"

Soa sniggered, enjoying his responses, "relax, I called in sick for you"

His jaw dropped, "What?"

"It's your birthday" her hand reached out to rub the back of her neck, "so I think you deserve that break"

He stared, and kept staring until Soa couldn't take it anymore and turned away with two red spots of embarrassment springing over her cheeks, "I-I prepared breakfast for you, so when you're done washing up, come eat"

She didn't dare look back at his confused and more than befuddled face, not wanting to see his teasing gaze and expecting some kind of remark to be made by the said boy. Instead, as she had her back turned to him to continue arranging the table, she suddenly felt a pair of arms wrap around her waist.

Hoseok didn't waste a single moment to turn her in his arms and press a short, sweet kiss at the edge of , relishing in the gasp that escaped her being once he pulled back.

"What was that for?" Soa asked in a breathless stutter. He only chuckled and ruffled her hair before going to the bathroom, "I'll be there in five"

Soa blinked stupidly. Well she believed that he was actually taking it the good way and that kiss may have proved it. It was amazing how much effect he had on her just with a kiss. A mere touch of their lips was enough to send her dizzy.

Although the breakfast she had cooked was not really up to what Hoseok used to make, he seemed to appreciate more than she had anticipated, and seeing his content and surprised face every time he took a mouthful of his breakfast- which consisted of bacon, omelettes and hash browns- built up a warmth of overflowing affection in her chest, and she smiled softly, tenderly.

"What?" He asked through a mouthful of egg and toast.

Getting caught had never helped her in any way, and jumping at his call, she gulped when she realized that she was probably gaping at him with a really stupid smile on plastered on her features. "It's nothing" she looked down and pushed the food around on her plate to try and avoid the questions in his eyes.

"Is something wrong?" He persisted.

She shook her head, “No, I was just thinking”

“About what?”

“About the fact that you’re enjoying my food” She replied with a teasing smirk.

Hoseok scoffed, “well, I wasn’t going to let it go to waste either. It probably took you a whole five hours to do this”

He was spot on about his guess. It had taken her lots of time after so many burnt trials that she had to throw away dejectedly in the bin. She had felt bad for all that delicious food going to waste just because of her stupid pathetic cooking skills, and yet, she felt like it needed to be as perfect as it could be for J-Hope’s birthday. That was the least she could do.

“I shut off your phone as well” she reminded him as she sipped on her coffee. The boy gave her a surprised look once again, and with his cheeks full of food, she felt the urge to pinch and coo at him like a baby. She shrugged and continued, “You would have been bothered by all your calls otherwise. At least try to relax on your birthday”

“Did you arrange all that?”

“With your assistant” Soa got up and pushed back her chair, “Come on, let’s get ready. I’m taking you out”

Hoseok’s brow rose in curiosity, and he hid a chuckle behind his cough, “Are you now?”

“Yeah, your birthday’s just starting”
