Truths

Drawing the Line

Light peeped through the cracks of the blinds like slithers of snakes weaving their way into the flat. A golden patch of sun landed on Soa's face, and the girl only frowned in response, burrowing more deeply into that safe comforting essence that immersed her into a peaceful slumber. She moved slightly and was about to her nose into the addicting smell that left her wanting for more when her nose suddenly bumped with something hard.

Hard?

She pried open an eye, coming face to face with something she hadn't expected in the least.

A collarbone?

A shriek threatening to burst out of her lips, Soa looked up slowly, jaw ajar only to see Hoseok's peaceful face sleeping like a baby, like he didn't have a care in the world. This was not happening, she chanted inside her head. This cannot be happening. Slowly, her hands that she realized had been wrapped around his waist, retracted to wriggle herself out of his grip.

Until he stirred.

She froze, face lingering over his as she stared at the frown that suddenly erupted onto his features, his eyebrows meeting in the center while his grasp onto her middle tightened. He pulled her closer and buried his face into her neck this time.

Soa was as red as a brick on fire.

"Yah" she struggled, but Hoseok wasn't having any of that and nuzzled the skin behind her ear, grunting softly like a baby.

Blushing and with a small amount of pride left, the girl pinched his arm slightly, just enough so that he jumped in shock. His eyelashes fluttered open and his gaze snapped down to see Soa in his arms, frozen like an ice figure.

Although Soa was a blushing mess by now, her brown orbs couldn't tear away from his face. In the morning light, Hoseok didn't seem threatening at all. On the contrary, his sleepy hooded gaze and his slow blinking rendered him like a cute child, and she found it adorable. She could've squished his cheeks.

Then, the magical moment disappeared. The boy jumped away from her like she had burned him, and started scratching his head and ruffling his hair to hide his growing embarrassment.

Soa cleared and stood up "I'll start breakfast" she mumbled, walking past him into the kitchen when she realized that they had fallen asleep on the couch in the living room. He grabbed onto her arm before she could make it past him.

"I'll cook,” he stated before pushing her in the opposite direction "you go wash up"

"But-" she shut upon Hoseok glaring daggers at her in a threatening manner as to ' not mess with what he just said'.
“May I remind you what almost happened last time you tried cooking?” He snapped.

Soa retreated backwards, not saying a word as she walked to the bathroom in annoyance.

How in the world did he have the right to boss her around when she was in her own house?

When she had freshened herself and felt more like a human being, she exited the bathroom only to hold down her laughter at the image presented before her. J-Hope, the basket baller of all time and the supposed badboy that was as cold as a vampire, had slung on a baby blue frilly apron over his torso and was pottering about the small kitchen like he had always lived there. How the hell had he managed to turn from scary into a dork, Soa would never know. She bit down on her lip but couldn’t resist letting out a small snigger.

The boy’s head snapped towards her, and she doubted that his flaming cheeks could have been concealed by darkness.

“If only your fangirls could see you right now” She started placing the utensils on the table and filled the boiler with water, pressing down onto the button in the process with a ‘click’.

“Shut up” he mumbled under his breath.

Noticing that he had fallen asleep with his school uniform, Soa’s nose wrinkled “Didn’t you bathe at all last night?”

“Maybe because I was too preoccupied to comfort someone” He shot back as nastily. All the gentleness from last night gone, but what was she to expect? J-Hope was as bipolar as a female during her nine months of pregnancy, but it still jabbed at her whenever he pricked her ego with small needles of insults.

However, she was humane enough to feel the guilt flood her body. In vain, she tried softening her voice “Do you have spare clothes?”

Sitting down across from her, the boy pushed a plate of toast and fried eggs before placing his own piece of bread into his mouth “I have my PE kit”

“Go wash up after breakfast” She ordered almost like a mother, and J-Hope softened at the sight. His mother used to tell him that a lot too, but recently she had seemed too much onto his back the last few days, always pressuring him to go to business meetings or attend social functions as his dad’s representative. It was almost suffocating the way she treated him, not like a son at all but more like a secretary. Hearing the familiar words drop out of Soa’s mouth made him want to reach out and hug her.

The memory of last night fell down upon both of them when the comfortable silence ensued, each wrapped into their world as they tried piecing back together what actually happened.

Soa had calmed down after a while, and was now resting onto J-Hope’s torso with her head buried into the crook of his neck whereas his chin fit snuggly onto her head. His hand was carelessly her back into soft, circular motions that seemed to calm her down and soften her heartbeats, and he sighed into her hair, smelling the sweet smelling scent that drove him to the edge of insanity. Too much of her and Hoseok was scared he might go somewhere he didn’t wish to go.

“Thank you” She suddenly spoke from the depths of his collarbones, and the boy looked down at her in surprise. Did she just thank him without being y about it?

He grunted in response, slightly embarrassed at her change in behavior. When she was nice, Hoseok’s body seemed to go off on autopilot while his mind turned blank. They were always badgering each other or fighting, so being nice to each other had never occurred to him at all till now.

Hoseok tried in vain to find something else to say, anything to keep his heartbeats at bay. But whatever was trickling through his mind didn’t seem right. Why could he not process normally when Soa was at his side? It felt weird; his mind was a plate of scrambled eggs that were being mulled over and over in his mouth. The words didn’t find him, his voiebox was clogged up with the sound of his pulse racing through his body.

“Hey, your heart’s beating very fast” Soa murmured before looking up into his eyes. The boy froze at her statement. . Why did she always have to be so sharp and quick-witted? “are you okay?”

He couldn’t help but release a snort “Are you being kind right now?”

Narrowing her eyes, she replied, “Do you want me to be y?”

“What difference does it make?” a smirk danced across his lips “You’re always kind of a ”

Extremely annoyed by his shift in behavior, Soa was about to reply something else when she noticed just how close their faces were. Practically millimeters apart. A gulp let itself lodge into as she dragged her eyes down to his lips upon remembering exactly what had happened before that.

“Stop staring, it’s annoying”

Soa hoped that her glare could burn him down “You’re so freaking-“ but then got cut off by his hand pressing down onto the back of her neck. Before she knew it, he had dragged down her face and she squeezed her eyes shut, thinking that he was probably going to kiss her again. But then his lips reached over to her eye and he breathed out, sizzles oozing off her skin at the scorching contact of flames.

“Sleep” He ordered softly, then her head into the crook of his neck once again.

They made sure to separate ways on the way to school for fear that someone might see them together and get the wrong idea. Soa sighed to herself as she walked down to her class, opening the door to see a more than excited Hani fling herself at her like an overexcited puppy.

“Hiiiii~” She drawled, excited as always.

“Hi” Soa’s lips twitched into a small smile. This girl would never change, always the shining bubble of happiness. She dragged Soa to her table and when they were comfortably sitting before homeroom, the former turned with an exited glint in her eyes and Soa couldn’t help but wonder what the hell had made her so happy all of a sudden. It was ironic how Soa’s mood wasn’t equivalenting Hani’s pure joy.

Sometimes, she wished she could be a bit more like Hani. Then maybe, she would get a shot at having a more normal life than what she was living now.

What with being bullied by Hoseok and all. It wasn’t really considered normal at all.

“Hey Soa-ah” Hani brought her out of her daze, and Soa turned to her, blinking questioningly. “Yeah?”

The girl was busy tracing patterns with her well-manicured fingernail, and when she looked up to look at the latter, she giggled with twinkling eyes. Something good must have happened to her, Soa mused to herself in amusement.

“Say, if I tell you a secret, you’ll help me right?” She suddenly asked.

“Help you?” Soa echoed “Like what?”

“Just promise me!” Hani giggled again and twirled a strand of hair around her index finger.

“Arraso”

“I..Uhm…how to say this..” Hani shifted uncomfortably in her seat and giggled again while her cheeks flushed red. She was either in a really bizarre mood this morning or she caught the flu on the way to school. Hani never acted so girlishly before.

“I-I…I actually have a crush on Hobi oppa”

Soa nodded and processed the words “Ah that’s goo-“ Her voice caught in . She blinked “Wait, who?”

“J-J-Hope oppa” Hani bit her lip and smiled in a dazed manner.

J-Hope oppa.

J-Hope.

Hoseok.

Soa could only stare, and stare, and keep staring. She was supposed to be happy for her friend, jump around and congratulate her while making a thousand promises that she would forever help her gain the boy’s heart while planning out a million scenario’s just like the typical girl would do.

But Soa wasn’t the typical girl.

Soa was different.

She felt it, slowly at first; like she couldn’t breathe.

Her windpipe was starting to close in on it, and she felt something in her stomach drop like she had suddenly eaten a sour fruit.

An acid taste raised itself inside , a taste that no matter how much she swallowed down, it didn’t get flushed. Goosebumps exploded onto her flesh and Soa didn’t know why she started shaking like a mad dog. It almost felt like she was starting to have a cold.

“So, will you help me win his heart? Please please please?” Hani batted her eyelashes at Soa in an attempt to act all cutesy in order to win the latter over. Soa only nodded absentmindedly, her mind lodged onto a feeling that wouldn’t leave her alone. She didn’t feel too good so suddenly, what she wanted was just to crawl under her bed covers and never come out.

Why did she feel like this?

She wanted, she genuinely did want to help Hani win her happiness and her love.

After all, they were first love’s, right?

But why did she feel like she was about to throw up?

Why was her heart aching so much at the thought of it?
