Prom

Drawing the Line

Hani heard the soft thud of the main door closing, and she decided that it was safe enough to go downstairs. Her parents were surely gone by now, and thus she could get away from all the scolding and the morals they always bring about when she’s around.

Heaving herself up, the girl padded down to the kitchen, her soft footsteps echoing through the walls and resonating through the empty space she called a house. Any other individual would be freaked out and scared of the sounds in this silent environment. However, Hani had been used to it ever since she was small, and it didn’t really make a difference now. On the contrary, she praised the company of silence compared to the shouts and screams of her parents.

Going down to the kitchen area and boiling some hot water, she slides into a chair and sighs while gazing into nothingness. It had been a bad night for her, she tossed and turned around, unable to sleep, and she was pretty certain that her eyes were sporting the usual panda look. Namjoon’s words were echoing each and every time she had been on the brink of slipping away, and it just bought her back to the reality of the earth.

She padded over to the counter and taking a glass from the cupboard, filled it with water before downing her medicine with it, coughing slightly after swallowing it.

Putting a hand in the middle of her chest, Hani breathed in and out slowly, exhaling and inhaling. She hated living this kind of life. She was strapped inside that house that she couldn’t even call a home or a place where she belonged. It was just a cold, empty area where she was quarantined after school. Her parents were never home, and if they were they would just go on about how she was a useless daughter and complain about her grades. God bless, Hani wasn’t the dumbest or the densest but she wasn’t a bright star either. She had to work hard to gain all her results, even sometimes pull all-nighters just so that she could pass a test, not even ace. It was sad reality, but the girl wasn’t that strong in academics, that was just it, nothing else, and she hated it when her parents would look down on her just because she didn’t inherit any of their smart genes. It hadn’t been her fault right? So why was she to blame each and every time?

Once, she had tried failing just to see what was their reaction. The outcome hadn’t been a very good one. Apparently, there was more than just being ignored. This time, she got a physical slap from her mother.

Her stinging cheek was nothing compared to the pain that levitated soon inside her heart. She had just come to the realization that the woman that had been standing over her with her hand poised in the air was not her mother but a monster.

An evil monster that would chase her forever.

Hani wanted, needed an end to all this torture, but there was no running away when all doors were already closed on her.

And just when she had needed it the most, that important individual that she held so dear to her heart decided that enough was enough and wrenched his way out of her heart while taking part of it with him.

The grip on her glass tightened at the memory. Tears could only gather in her eyes as it washed over her like it was only yesterday, as clear as crystal water.

Stop playing around. You think I’m stupid?”

Of all times, why did it have to be now that he suddenly pops up into her consciousness? Hani thought to herself as she gritted her teeth together and tried evening out her breathing. She couldn’t lose control over that, because otherwise it might harm her body, granted her heart wasn’t that strong to keep all those emotions at bay.

Did he really think that she did it just out of spite? Was that all there was to her? Just a mean that wanted to keep those she loved within her reach?

There had been a small evil intention behind her actions, but all she wanted was for Hoseok to be by her side, because he was the only one that had looked at her without any repulsion, without any fear, and most important of all hadn’t pushed her away when he had tried clinging on to him.

He knew her story, but didn’t judge her by it, or by her family name.

She had to talk to Namjoon, and fast.

“Soa”

The said girl almost jumped out of her skin at the alto tone that buzzed through her ears. Turning around after having shut her locker, she looked at Hoseok questioningly as the boy had on a look of pure anxiousness on his face, like he was going to get seasick at any second. Pressing her schoolbooks closer to her chest, Soa frowned at the boy and said “Yeah?”

“Uh…” A beat of silence passed between the two individuals, Hoseok’s mind whirling with a confusion that he could only understand. His thoughts were scattered everywhere and he wanted to run away from the pressure of it all.

Truth was, prom was just behind the door and he hadn’t even thought of asking Soa out to the event, already having perceived that they would go together since they were a couple, until BTS brought up the subject. Not to forget that Jin practically bit his head off for being so inconsiderate since it didn’t necessarily mean that Soa would attend it with him. But when he delivered the last line saying “She may probably go with another guy’, that had sent his nerves off and wrecking everything. He practically snapped at his hyung before stomping away with a determined look on his face. There was no way Soa would go to prom with someone else other than him, and he would see to that.

“I-Uh…Well – uh-wo-would you-um…”

She wanted to smile, for Hoseok presented the image of a small kid that was unsure whether to apologise because of a mistake he made because his pride wouldn’t let him. Trying to test how far he would go, she only rolled her eyes and said, “I don’t have all day”

“Aish woman! You can’t expect me to- urgh whatever! You know what?! We’re going to prom together! You better well be wearing a nice dress!” Hoseok huffed before swiveling onto his feet and stomping away like the kid he was, steam practically bursting out of his ears. Soa watched him go with more than amusement b in the corner of her eyes. It was funny how something as simple as that seemed so hard for the boy, like a mountain that couldn’t be escaladed.

“Poor Hoseok hyung” V suddenly popped up at her side, causing her to jump slightly before regaining her composure. Jungkook followed closely behind and she didn’t fail to notice the blush that was set ablaze over both cheeks, a blanket of dusty rose settling over his skin.

“He’s the one beating around the bush” Soa answered in her defense, rolling her eyes.

“Cut him some slack. He never had a girlfriend before” Taehyung sniggered as they started making their way to class.

“Who are you inviting as your date, Taehyung?” Soa asked with mild curiosity.

“Ah ah, secret’ the boy winked as she snorted and replied “Not that I was interested in knowing anyway”

“Well, we all know who Jungkook is taking to prom, right Kookie?” The older boy cooed as he ruffled the latter’s hair. Jungkook’s blush deepened while he tried to move away from his friend’s sudden arm around his shoulder. Soa raised an eyebrow and sent him a pointed look, “Is it who I think it is?” she asked in fake innocence.

“I think it’s pretty obvious given the circumstances” Taehyung added without mercy. The younger boy couldn’t stand their teasing any longer. He covered his face in embarrassment and replied, “Shut up!”

“JEON JUNGKOOK!” someone’s scream from the other end of the corridor made everyone –including the group with the said boy- turn in shock as a sudden figure dashed across the hall to tackle Jungkook down on the floor, legs on both sides of his body as she stood proud and tall over her victim with a sadistic winning smile gracing her face. He should’ve known, he thought to himself as he looked up to her face and felt himself soften like the real teddy he was. No one would’ve been able to tackle him down like Chohee did.

That was the way Chohee was.

“Y-Yah! What’s the problem now?!” Jungkook exclaimed and ruffled his hair in annoyance and more than mere embarrassment as whispers and murmurs exploded across the students in hushed voices and excited tones.

“Let’s go to prom together” She sent him a wide grin. From the sidelines Taehyung and Soa couldn’t help but snort in laughter.

“Well wasn’t that a blunt way of asking,” the boy whispered.

“U-Uh, yeah whatever, just get me up already” Jungkook agreed gruffly, more than happy to be going with the one he wanted to but in a battle with his emotions whether to show this happiness or to hide it. After all, it didn’t seem like Chohee was interested in him that way but he was willing to try. He had never fallen in love before, and he believed this was his first love. He liked the feeling, the bubbly aura, and the soft edges that curled around her form every time he looked at her. It wasn’t because he had gotten the wrong perception of her. Chohee hadn’t done anything to mask her true persona- she was rough and sometimes cold and a master at martial arts- and that’s what he liked about her.

As he watched the group talk, he felt the affection in his chest, like a flame threatening to burst throughout his entire body and warming him up with that feeling of butterflies trailing across his stomach.

Prom will be the day, he decided, the day where he will take this chance and confess his feelings.

Soa took a deep breath and opened her eyes.

She stopped and stared, and stared, and would’ve kept staring if not for Chohee’s voice bringing her out of her daydream by saying “You like it?”

This wasn’t Soa. Those soft, dewy eyes that held a mysterious but charming glow, framed by a soft degradation if maroon into lighter tones so that it became a sultry smokey-eyed, the eyeliner that caused her orbs to pop out and the mascara that framed her irises perfectly. When she batted them it felt like the soft whisperings of the butterfly’s wings calling out to her lover. Her cheekbones had been highlighted slightly and her nose contoured to give it more definition. Her lips – Soa couldn’t help but purse them in amazement- were the definition of a woman’s, all glossy and ready to be kissed.

“Man, Hoseok will have a hard time controlling himself tonight” Chohee laughed slightly when Soa’s cheeks filled with color. She had agreed for this occasion that the girl should put on her makeup what she hadn’t been aware of was of her talent. Chohee was a god at putting on makeup; she put on just the right amount on Soa’s face so she didn’t look like a .

“Chohee” Soa suddenly called out the girl’s name. The latter hummed softly in reply for she had been busy applying her own makeup, and Soa decided it was safe enough to deliver her question, “Why do you help me so much?”

The other girl turned with amusement washing over her face and softening her features, and a pause ensued before she replied decisively, “Because I want to be your friend”

No one had ever spoken those seven words to Soa. A friend, Chohee had said. A friend, she liked that word. She laced it with so many attentive emotions that triggered something inside Soa’s chest. The feeling that came with them was so intense with happiness that a smile couldn’t slip away from her face. Instead, it practically threatened to break her face in two when the girl turned to the other and grinned happily like a child waiting for Santa on Christmas eve, “Thank you”

Soa then shrugged on her dress; a mint spaghetti strap upper part that reached right underneath her chest with a cute ribbon upon it while the rest was white and it puffed out until her mid-thigh. She couldn’t wait to see how Hoseok would react. After all, he was the most unexpected person she knew. Would he hate it? She thought to herself in slight fear. But then she shook her head, so what if he does? You want to have fun at this party right? She talked to herself in encouragement.

“You look beautiful” Chohee praised once they had settled their high-heels at their feet and were busy holding the staircase for dear life. Soa felt a hint of a smile lift upon one side of her face, and lifting her head to watch the other girl’s brown orbs shining with a friendliness that only she could evoke, Soa replied “You too’ and held out her hand to her friend.

Together, as they grasped their hands together and held on to each other to go downstairs, a secret message seemed to be invoked inside both of their hearts; like it had been settled somehow, the score between them. With this hand, Soa wanted to tell Chohee just how much she regretted having bad thoughts about her when in truth she had just been trying to help her, and with this same hand, wished to say sorry for having misunderstood.

Chohee on the other hand wished the best for Soa, and wanted her to understand that it wasn’t for nothing that she stayed silent within the queenka group, that she had a reason for that.

But this can be done later, she concluded inside her mind and prying aside her thoughts.

They hadn't asked the boys to come and pick them up, deciding that meeting at the school gates was good enough. On the way, Soa kept thinking about her boyfriend's reaction and hoped that he wouldn't make a scene or something that would make her regret going out with him. God knows what could go through the boy's mind, especiay since it was Hoseok they were talking about.

Arriving at the gates and noticing the two said cavaliers waiting for them impatiently, Soa took a step forward and stumbled, and she would've fallen if not for the sudden embrace of arms coiling around her in protection.

Looking up, a gasp stuck inside when she gazed up into the eyes of Hoseok.

"Clumsy idiot" he mumbled under his breath before pulling her up against him and suddenly takin a huge step backwards from her. The sudden distance he gave Soa made her blink in mild confusion, She was about to open and ask exactly why he was acting weird when circumstances were definitely not appropriate only to notice the soft blush that dusted his cheeks while the boy looked away.

So he was embarrassed, the thought burst through her head. He was blushing because of her, he was feeling flustered because of her.

"Y-you look... N-nice" he stuttered. She wanted to pinch his cheek because there was no way he was being so cute in such circumstances! Soa wanted to squeal and jump about in glee. Before she could do anything else though, he grabbed onto her arm and pulled her in again, pressing a chaste kiss onto her forehead "you're beautiful"

If Hoseok had been blushing earlier on, Soa was definitely at another level. Steam was practically crawling out of her ears and she would've yelped and stumbled away if not for his arms tightening around her waist.

"Nice to know that you can look like a girl from time to time" He grinned while nudging her jaw with his nose, pecking her there when he felt a protest rise up from her voice box.

"Thanks for reminding me of my gender, Hoseok-ssi" she rolled her eyes.

As she turned away upon spotting the other BTS boys, J-Hope decided to keep her for himself by back hugging her and entwining their hands together, resting lightly on her stomach.

Soa opened to protest but He beat her to it by pecking her lips. Her eyes widened and she pushed him away by reflex. He only chuckled at her antics "So Unresponsive"

"I'm sorry you fell in love with a robot" she answered with sarcasm dripping from her voice.

A smile danced on his lips, as always Soa found a vulnerable spit where she would deliver her kick. It had always been a tug of war kind of relationship, so being nice to each other had never really crossed his mind. But when he thought about it, their words may not reflect it but the worry and concern was present through all their actions. He guessed they preferred the unspoken acts of kindness because he can totally picture Soa's blushing face as she denies it with very poor acting skill.

"Look" she suddenly nudged. He turned his gaze into the wanted direction and together they watched Jungkook converse with Chohee.

They had been murmuring in hushed voices, heads stuck together quite close when suddenly Chohee stepped away and slapped the back of Jungkook's head before running away with angry footsteps. Jungkook cried out in pain before following her closely behind and Soa blinked, looking up at her boyfriend only to be taken aback by the amount of tenderness swimming in Hoseok's irises; brown specks swirling with attention and a dazed seductiveness that she had never seen him wear before. He was looking at her like she was the reason he was breathing; he was looking at her like she was the center of his universe.

"U-uh...S-Stop staring" she managed to cough.

Then he blinked and looked away with burning cheeks "Mian."

She liked this part of Hoseok as well.
