The One That Got Away

Winrina = Jiminjeong

"Are you going somewhere?"

A short haired girl was struggling to put on her shoes as her left hand was still holding her jacket. She grunted as she fell on her while trying to pull the shoes.

"You know that you can sit down and wear it properly."

"I can do this."

"Sigh."

Then, she pumped her fist to the air and grinned. She did it.

"Done!"

"Do you want me to accompany you?"

"No, Taeyeon unnie. I won't be walking so far."

"Right. Be careful okay."

"Yes yes."

"Minjeong, look at me."

Minjeong sighed and looked at her sister. She gave her best smile before bowing politely at her causing her sister to roll her eyes.

"My dear sister, I will be fine."

"Hmm. Call me if anything."

"Will do!"

Minjeong left the house, skipping happily and closed the door with a soft thud. Taeyeon stares at the closed door for few seconds before she let out a long sigh. She rubbed her face and closed her eyes.

"It's really hard to see you trying to pretend to be okay." Taeyeon whispered.

...

Minjeong keeps a smile on her face as she enjoys the nice weather while having her morning peaceful walk. She put her hands inside her jacket's pocket and smiled wider seeing some people were walking their dogs outside too. She hummed a soft song as she continued walking until she reached the small park where she usually went. She saw an empty bench, her usual spot. She went to sit down and closed her eyes, breathing the morning's fresh air.

"I wish I can be here with you forever, Minjeong. To accompany you on your morning walk and sit here with you as I lend my shoulder for you to rest on."

Minjeong opened her eyes when a memory of her past suddenly came into her mind. She chuckled to herself and shook her head.

"You're the only love of my life, Kim Minjeong. Like how I am yours."

Minjeong smiled sadly, and glanced at the empty space beside her.

"But you're not with me anymore, and I am no longer the love of your life."

.....

4 years has passed. Kim Minjeong found herself to be working as the COO of her sister's company, Winter K Company instead of her father's company, The Kim Group.

It shook the whole country when she decided to work with her sister instead of her father. Unknown to the public, she's not in a good term with her father and her grandfather. It's another reason why she chose her sister and live with her when the huge fight happened.

Now, she can afford to live on her own. She bought a new apartment using her own money and live alone. She's also known as the coldest Kim now as she rarely appears during any events and hard to get a glimpse of her, and when she does, people can hardly see her smile.

Knock knock.

"Come in!"

Thud.

Minjeong looked up to see her sister smiling at her while she just nodded her head in acknowledgement. Taeyeon observed how cute Minjeong look wearing her spec and her short hair being tucked behind her both ears.

"Are you up for lunch?"

"I'll pass. I have to review this one."

"It'll be just downstairs at the cafeteria, no?"

"Maybe after I'm done, unnie."

"Hmm."

Taeyeon then glanced at the scattered photos on Minjeong's desk and frowned when she saw blurry photos of Minjeong's ex girlfriend.

"Minjeong ah."

"Hm?"

Taeyeon looked at Minjeong who didn't take off her eyes from the papers in her hands.

"I hope that you will stop doing that."

Minjeong froze and looked at her sister before slowly looking at the photos she forgot to hide. She cleared and quickly grabbed the photos to put them inside a brown envelope.

"Did you really hire someone to spy on her?"

"I'm just keeping up with her-"

"That's not healthy, Minjeong."

"What's wrong with trying to keep up to date with a friend?"

"You know so well that you both are no one to each other now, what more for being a friend."

Minjeong looked away, refusing to accept her current status with her ex, that they were just strangers now.

"Minjeong ah. You have to move on."

"I will only do so if she does first."

"Minjeong-"

"Don't worry about me, unnie. I told you, I'll be fine."

Taeyeon looked at her younger sister sadly and sighed. She could only do so much for her. She knows at the end of the day, it's up to Minjeong of what she wants to do.

"I just want you to be happy. I hope I can have my old Minjeong back." Taeyeon whispered before she excused herself.

Minjeong's hands that were holding the papers trembled. She bit her bottom lip and glared at the papers as she tried to stop her tears from falling.

"How? How can I be happy without her? It breaks me all over again, waking up everyday and knowing that she's not with me anymore."

.....

"Minjeong?"

Minjeong waved at her sister. She realised how many eyes are on her right now. It's obvious, since she doesn't really come to this kind of event and rarely shows up. However, tonight was different. She needs to come. She needs to see it with her eyes. She got an information that her ex has moved on from her and found someone else, so she needs to confirm it.

"You're here?" Taeyeon asked and quickly put an arm around her.

"Yeah. I was wondering if I can have fun. Work have been stressful lately." She lied. Of course she lied. She can't just tell her sister about her real intention.

"Okay okay. Stick with me. There are a lot of ert old men here." Taeyeon frowned and already glaring at some men who were staring at Minjeong.

"Okay." Minjeong only shrugged, keeping her cold facade.

"Hey, girls, can you look after Minjeong for me? I need to talk to Mr Lee first." Taeyeon left Minjeong with her close friends who happened to be businesswomen as well and Minjeong knows them well.

"Minjeongie! Been a long time." Tiffany Hwang pulled her into a hug while the rest smiled at her and asked how's she doing.

"I'm doing fine, unnies. Thanks for asking." Minjeong replied and bowed politely.

Minjeong then told them to carry on with their conversation while she will just be listening as her eyes tried to look for her ex.

Heard you went to the event. Would've gone there if I knew.     8:11pm

Minjeong saw a text message from an acquaintance. She ignored it and continued to look around until her eyes finally saw a familiar back figure. Minjeong's heart started to pound against her chest and she narrowed her eyes as the woman slowly turning a little until Minjeong can see her side profile. Minjeong let out a shaky sigh and gulped to finally seeing her in front of her eyes after so long. Jimin...

Minjeong coughed twice before moving her feet, wanting to get closer to look at her closely when suddenly Taeyeon came and blocked her way.

"Unnie."

"No, Minjeong." Taeyeon looked serious.

"Unnie, please." Minjeong sighed and was about to push her away when she saw another woman approached her ex.

She saw them hugged and how Jimin's hand lingers around the woman's waist while they laughed together and the woman leaned her body more on Jimin. Minjeong saw how the woman threw a smirk on Jimin and Jimin leaned into her ear to whisper something, slightly brushing her lips on the woman's earlobe. Minjeong's heart clenched at the sight and she can feel the heat on her eyes, holding back her sad and angry tears.

Minjeong then looked at Taeyeon who sighed and shook her head.

"You knew." Minjeong whispered.

"Minjeong-"

"So it's true. She found somebody else."

Taeyeon looked down and didn't answer.

"I'm really a fool, right unnie?"

"No, you're not-"

"I- I want to leave, unnie."

"Do you want me to send you home?"

"No. I need to clear my mind. I'll be alone."

"But Minjeong ah-"

"I'll text you, unnie. Don't worry."

Minjeong then turned around and left the venue while Taeyeon can only watched her younger sister left with her still broken heart.

"Taeng."

Taeyeon looked at her friends who looked worried. She approached them and let them comforted her.

"Hey, Minjeong is a big girl. I'm sure she'll be fine. Maybe not now, but someday she will." Tiffany told her.

"I hope so, Fany ah."

...

Minjeong doesn't know how but she found herself sitting on a stool, in a bar alone. She ordered a beer and drank slowly, still trying to prevent herself from being drowned in her sadness.

"I told you to call me if you need company."

Minjeong side glanced at the new comer before looking back at her glass.

"One of this for me too." She heard the woman told the barista.

"Why do you want me to marry you, Hwang Yeji?"

Yeji was surprised at the question, but turned her body to face Minjeong properly. It's true, she asked Minjeong last time to marry her. They hardly know each other and their families are rivals and enemies.

"Revenge." Yeji answered truthfully.

"Revenge..." Minjeong mumbled.

"Yes. Your grandfather betrayed my parents and my parents had to suffer for years because of his doing. Then..."

Minjeong looked up and turned to Yeji.

"Then?"

"Your ex was seeing my ex."

Minjeong frowned and raised her eyebrows.

"Was that why you approached me?"

"I actually wanted to destroy you since you are your grandfather's favourite grandchild. However, when I found out that we were both left broken and empty by our ex, I changed my plan. I took a break to get over the heartbreak and only wanted to continue with the plan once my mind is clear, but what's stopping me again is when I found out my ex approached your ex and that they're seeing each other now."

"So, Jimin moved on with your ex." Minjeong chuckled and hold her head as she rested her elbow on the counter.

"What a small world." Minjeong whispered.

"Then, what's the plan now?" Minjeong asked.

"Still asking you to marry me, hurt my ex's ego since she actually doesn't like you. She has often been compared to you by her grandparents so she hates you. Then, Jimin was there for you, being the perfect lover and gentlewoman for you. You're living a great life that she hates you even more."

"What? You are not the perfect lover for her then?" Minjeong asked.

"I... I wasn't." Yeji frowned.

"I wanted to but I couldnt. I was a mess, Minjeong. Like I said, your grandfather betrayed my parents. We were struggling financially and I had to be there for my parents. I didn't mean to neglect my ex, but it just happened. I tried to beg her to stay, but I hold myself when I found out she broke up with me after finding out Jimin broke up with you. Instead of heartbroken, I feel more of being furious and betrayed by her. She wanted Jimin all along. I was nothing to her." Yeji gritted her teeth.

"Your ex is an ." Minjeong makes a disgusted expression and Yeji scoffed.

"Tell me about it."

"But at least, you knew the reason why she broke up with you."

"What do you mean?"

"I was left in the dark. Jimin left me just like that. No explanation."

"Maybe she fell out of love?" Yeji asked.

"No. She's hurting as much as I am. Well, at least, back then. I saw her cried. I tried to go to her but she became cold and asked me to never find her again." Minjeong sighed.

"Are you still trying to find out why?"

"I have a feeling that it's because of my grandfather and my father. They wanted me to marry grandfather's best friend's grandson anyway."

"Why don't you confront Jimin about it?"

"I have. She said they did give her a warning but that's not all. She just can't be with me anymore. She told me to make it easy for her, to stop asking for answers and to move on. How easy it was for her to say that after making me fall hard for her." Minjeong chuckled with tears in her eyes.

"So, no. I don't know what's the real reason for her to break up with me. It's annoying that I can't move on from her. My heart, it have been hurting so much." Minjeong sobbed and dropped her head on the counter.

"And it's painful to see her moving on now with your stupid ex." Minjeong muttered.

Yeji sighed and rubbed Minjeong's back soothingly while thinking of a way to end their misery. She then took out a ring that's in her coat's pocket and looked at Minjeong.

"Wear my ring then, Minjeong." Yeji said.

"What?"

"My ring. Wear it. Let's stop being the only one that's hurting." Yeji told her.

"I don't get it."

"The media knows how much I treasured this ring. I almost kill someone for trying to steal it from me previously."

"Because it's expensive?"

"No. Because it's a special gift from my parents. I cherish my parents a lot."

"Then why are you giving it to me to wear it?"

Yeji laughed and scooted closer, grinning at the confused Minjeong.

"Let the media do their work and give them some rumours. You, wearing my ring. Make people think that we're together. Join me, Minjeong. Let's do this together."

"What will I get?"

"I'll treat you better. I'll make my ex see how I'm being the perfect lover for you instead of her. She will regret leaving me. We're going to hurt her just like she hurt us. At the same time, I'll be able to make your grandfather angry, you want that too. I know you hate him. And! You'll gain a friend, I will be loyal to you, Minjeong."

"Hmm."

"Besides, we can distract each other from the heartbreak." Yeji added.

"I'll think about it."

"Okay."

.....

Breaking news!! Kim Minjeong was seen hanging out with Hwang Yeji. They were both seen spending time together and were being clingy. Are we going to witness a new bloomin love?

Minjeong ignored the stares when she stepped her feet in the company. She noticed her sister's eyes were eyeing her from afar and paid no mind to it. She texted Yeji, telling her to pick her up for lunch while going to the elevator.

She started her routine like usual, asking her secretary to ignore all of the calls that they had received from any medias, asking about her current relationship with Yeji. She was informed that her father and her grandfather were asking for her presence for tonight's dinner as well which she never bother to give any update if she would be coming or not.

It has been a week. She had spent her days with Yeji now and they are getting to know each other. Minjeong was surprised with what her grandfather did to Yeji's family. She can't believe that her family was heartless. She's glad that Taeyeon wasn't cruel and is a kind hearted person. At least, she still can rely on her.

"Hello."

"Oh. Not busy? You picked up my call right away."

Minjeong scoffed hearing Yeji's teasing tone.

"What do you want, Yeji?"

"Let's eat chicken later."

"Yeji, it's still... 8:30am and you're thinking about food already?"

"No. I was thinking about you at first but then you texted about lunch so then, I thought of food."

Minjeong shook her head as she heard Yeji's laughter.

"I'm good with chicken."

"Great! Do you need your knight in shining armour to get you right at your office's door?"

"No. I can walk myself to the lobby and wait for you there."

"Hm. I shouldn't make a princess Kim wait though. I'll go straight to your office and fetch you there."

"Yeji."

"I am trying to be the gentlewoman here."

"That's too much of being a gentlewoman."

"It's better too much rather than nothing. Don't you think so?"

"Whatever. I'm hanging up. 12pm sharp, Yeji. Don't be late. Bye."

Minjeong sighed and put her phone on silent since she knew Yeji would spam her as she hung up on her without waiting for her to say her bye as well.

...

"This is the best fried chicken ever. Trust me." Yeji told Minjeong and started putting some on Minjeong's plate.

Minjeong rested her elbows on the table and put her chin on her entertwined fingers as she stares at Yeji.

"You are really being serious about your gentlewoman side." Minjeong commented.

"Of course. I have to be the best when I'm with you." Yeji replied and winked at her causing Minjeong to smile a little.

"Thank you." Minjeong thanked her for taking care of her.

Her days were not as lonely as much anymore. Yeji managed to brighten up her days even if just a little.

"Wow. Fancy seeing you here, Yeji."

Yeji froze and Minjeong looked at her cold face. Minjeong then turned her head and found the world stopped spinning seeing Jimin behind the woman who just came to their table. Jimin looked at her with a longing stare that Minjeong almost believe that Jimin misses her too.

"Ryujin." Yeji's jaw tightened, she looked at Ryujin with no emotion.

"What are you doing here?" Yeji asked.

"Oh. I'm here to eat with Jimin." Ryujin answered and smirked at me.

"Your friend?" Minjeong asked and put her hand on top of Yeji's hand, Yeji reacted naturally as she holds Minjeong's hand and caressing her skin using her thumb.

"My ex, actually. But don't worry, we're nothing now. You're the only one for me, remember?" Yeji whispered softly at her, purposely whispering loud enough for Ryujin and Jimin to hear.

"I believe you." Minjeong smiled sweetly at Yeji and Yeji blinked her eyes in awe. It was her first time seeing Minjeong's genuine wide smile directed at her.

"T-Thanks." Yeji blushed.

Ryujin and Jimin saw the whole interaction. Ryujin bit her lip in annoyance while Jimin could only stares.

"So, you both are together?" Ryujin asked.

"And why do you care?" Minjeong asked back.

"Pfft. I don't. Just, never thought Yeji's type is... Well, you."

Yeji chuckled and looked at Ryujin.

"What's not to like about Kim Minjeong? She's a real angel, a beauty with brain. She's such a sweetheart too. I would die for this girl for sure." Yeji said.

"The last time I remembered, you don't do that."

"What?"

"Die for your lover."

"Can't blame me. Minjeong got me wrapped around her fingers, definitely." Yeji said.

"Your love will be temporary. You're saying this because you guys are still new." Ryujin told her and crossed her arms.

"I don't think so. Because I'm just waiting for her yes now. I asked for her hands already." Yeji replied and Minjeong squeezed her hand while Yeji kept rubbing her thumb on her skin.

"Would her family agree though? Especially her grandfather?"

Now, both Minjeong and Yeji looked at Jimin who only just spoke.

"Does it matter?" Yeji asked.

"What?"

"Does it matter if they agree or not?"

"Of course, it's her family. They are important to her." Jimin frowned when Minjeong suddenly laughed.

"Family doesn't hurt their own family. Certainly, they are far from being important to me now." Minjeong said but already turned her head away from Jimin.

"Minjeong is worth it. I will fight for her. Like I said, I would die for her. She deserves someone who wouldn't be scared to love her and be by her side for as long as I can. One thing for sure, she will never see me walking away or leaving her." Yeji said seriously.

Minjeong looked at her. Yeji then looked at her back and smiled warmly at her.

"I'm here to stay. I hope you know that. I won't let you experience someone walking out of your life anymore." Yeji said.

Minjeong knows, Yeji was saying that for Jimin to hear. It's because Jimin just walked out of her life because of being scared. Jimin couldn't do it, she couldn't fight for her. Minjeong was disappointed but she tried to understand. However, she can't help but to feel bitter that Jimin just dropped their relationship like nothing, without even trying to fight for them.

"Let's go. Think I lost my appetite already."

Yeji bumped her shoulder on Ryujin's before putting some cash on the table and pulled Minjeong with her. They only stopped once they reached Yeji's car with Yeji turning around to face Minjeong who was quiet.

"Look at me." Yeji said and Minjeong slowly looked up at her with tears in her eyes.

"Stop crying for her." Yeji hissed and wiped off her tears using her thumbs.

"You shouldn't let your beautiful tears fall for someone who was not even worth to cry for." Yeji said.

"Yeji ah. I- I can't anymore." Minjeong ended up still crying.

Yeji sighed and looked away, afraid if she would cry too seeing her cried.

"I thought- I thought I'll be fine but-" Minjeong paused and hiccupped.

"It hurts a lot." Minjeong cried.

Yeji then pulled her into her embrace, hands rubbing her back softly and let Minjeong cried.

"Make it go away. Please, Yeji. Make the pain go away."

Yeji's heart tightened hearing Minjeong's pleading voice.

"Am I really not worth enough to fight for?" Minjeong asked in a whisper once she calmed down from crying.

"Don't say that. You're precious, Minjeong." Yeji told her softly.

"Then why did she leave?"

"It's her loss. I am going to make you forget about her, Minjeong. I want you to just look at me from now on. Can we try?"

For few seconds, Yeji didn't hear anything until she felt Minjeong nodded her head. Yeji smiled and hugged her tightly.

"I'll be with you through it all. I promise."

While on the other hand, Jimin was actually following them outside. She wanted to talk to Minjeong, wanted to be close to her. She saw and heard everything, how Yeji now was the one who was there for Minjeong. How Yeji was the one who holds her. And how Yeji was the one who promises not to leave. It used to be her. God, it used to be just her. She was the only one for Minjeong, but she was ashamed of herself too. She gave up without trying to fight for the both of them. She hurt her Minjeong and left her.

Jimin looked at Minjeong sadly. She wishes she could be there to give her a hug, she wishes she was the one who was hugging her. Her heart pounded painfully when Minjeong looked up and they looked at each other. Jimin's hands trembled seeing the tears from Minjeong's beautiful eyes that she used to stare at a lot. She badly wishes she can wipe them off and kisses them away.

"I'm sorry." Jimin mouthed and tried her best to smile at Minjeong.

Minjeong closed her eyes and tightened her hold on Yeji as more tears falling out of her eyes. Right then, Jimin knew, Minjeong is finally letting go too. Jimin's heart crashed to the ground. She turned away and walked away slowly. One by one, her tears dropped until more tears flowing down on her cheek.

Once she's far enough, she dropped to her knees and put her palms on her face as she cried her heart out. She was a coward, she couldn't be brave for Minjeong. She deserves this. She will continue living with regrets, of losing the love of her life.

While for Minjeong, she could just run and go after Jimin but her heart was tired. She couldn't keep going with more pain anymore. Jimin was not willing to go through everything with her. Jimin decided to leave when things get hard and she had to accept that. Jimin is leaving and will never come back. Minjeong had to accept that Jimin is out of her life. She'll remember her as the one that got away.

I... Will forever remember you, Yoo Jimin. The one that got away. I wish you well.
