We Just Couldn't Have It All© : Book 1

The heart could maybe remember the happenings

But, it could remember the happy moments

When you are by his/her side and you can't help

But, to smile.

Kai stood behind the tall trees near the neighborhood, picking every trash on sight. He looked exhausted as he wiped the forming sweat on his forehead with the back of his hand. He slanted his eyebrow, looking at the surroundings. He felt that there were many things he needed to do.

The janitress ahjumma around the same age as Kai’s grandmother looked baffled as she looked at him. She felt that there was not a need of him to do community works. Well, she hadn’t heard for his story and just continued to observe his every move.

Kai chose to sit on the bench right after putting the trash on the bin. He leaned closer, closing his eyes momentarily. He smiled inwardly believing that he was doing the right thing.

“Ah…” He hesitated. “This felt pretty good.”

Kai’s face fell silent. He wondered where the hell Krystal was and what was she doing. He wanted to see her so badly that his heart cringed at the thought of it.

The ahjumma sat beside him. Kai didn’t notice that she was approaching as he wanted to take a nap. The ahjumma looked at the pretty boy’s face surveying how fatigued and different he got after having community work.

“What happened to you?”

Kai faltered as he opened his eyes. He was shocked to see the ahjumma looking at his whole temple.

“That scared me…” Kai rubbed his chest as he pulled himself together.

The ahjumma beamed. “Yeah, you needed a break. The stress takes a toll on your body.” She tapped his shoulder.

“Thanks.” He humbly said. “But, I needed to do this. I’ve got to.”

“Why?”

“This is my punishment…” He hid his face on the ahjumma. “There’s this girl…I’m really puzzled about. She always comes into my mind and makes me waver on my principles. But, I don’t know if I like her or I just wanted to care for her…like a true friend.”

“Hmn?” The ahjumma alleged. “You’re thinking so much.” She tapped her chin. “I don’t know much but I wouldn’t know just through your words.” She uttered truthfully.

He bowed down, recognizing her point. “I know…and this whole scenario is pretty chaotic. I don’t even know how to solve my problems.”  He sighed.

“Problems are there for a reason. God wouldn’t just throw problems on us because he felt like to. There is this destiny we’re journeying to.” The ahjumma looked beyond the place.

“I don’t get your moment.” He scratched the back of his neck.

“Search your heart for answers. Your mind messes it up.” The ahjumma stood up. “And, do you know how you could solve this?”

“What?” He expected for her urgent answer.

“It is to not run away and face it head first. Nothing could beat problems except your courage.”

The ahjumma turned her back. She left Kai hanging.

Krystal didn’t go to school this day. She was alone on her bed, thinking it through. She walked to and fro at the four corners of her room, looking for answers. She looked up at the ceiling, getting hopeless. There was this instinct that would let one look up whenever faced by a difficult problem like in Math.

Krystal hopped on her bed, feeling grumpy. She hated how everything went. She thought that falling in love was simple and it wasn’t something to be so hopeless about.

For her, love was full of happiness and there was nothing that would stand on the love between two people.

“Aigoo…” She shook her head. “What should I do?”

She looked at the calendar. Before she knew it, summer was approaching. They would part ways temporarily and she didn’t know how to approach Kai anymore that this time frame. She needed an opportunity and a perfect one, so to not hurt Sehun’s already aching heart.

She ran her eyes through the room, feeling light-headed. “What did I do to deserve this?”

Krystal asked her butler to drive her to any place she could have a peaceful time to. The butler humbly followed up that there was something he could take her.

It was a place where she could find a peace of mind.

Krystal finally giggled as she looked excited. She took a bath and changed her clothes immediately, hopping at her every step.

Her phone rang, signaling a phone call.

She picked it up, hesitating. It was her sister’s worried voice. She wanted to know what was up about Jessica but it was not the time yet.

“I’ve heard everything…from Geun Young.” Jessica sighed on the other line.

“Unnie…”

“And, I already saw…Choi Minah.” Jessica hesitated to continue. “And, she looked perfect, I’m telling you.”

“What do you want me to do?”

“It’s to do what you wanted to do. But, I’m worried for Sulli and Taeminnie.” She face-palmed.

“What is it?”

“Auhh…yeah, yeah..” Her sister paused. Krystal felt like she was talking to someone and wanted to excuse herself.

“I’d be going.” Krystal hanged up. “Unnie…” She played with her phone. “You’re not even helping.”

Krystal got on the car as the butler waved at her. She was not enjoying the whole trip and the butler felt disappointed of himself.

“Madame, are you bored?” He courteously asked.

“No..no, just thinking of some things.” She muttered. She looked at the window. “Where are we going?”

“Some place.”

“What?”

The butler turned his head. “No, I’m saying that it’s kind of my residence. My mother is there and she is a street cleaner.”

“Street cleaner?” Krystal pouted.

“Yeah, but please don’t be disappointed, my lady. The place looked new and cozy. Every time I have a problem I’m always going there for a time to clear things out.”

“To clear your mind?”

“Yeah.” He nodded, the car halted in the car park. Krystal got off as she surveyed the whole surroundings, she felt the wind blowing by.

“Fresh air, finally…” She commented, looking at the tall pine trees and the peaceful street leading her to nowhere. She tried to walk at the straight path just because she felt like it.

She saw how wonderfully the flowers are planted, making a flowerbed on her sight. There were daffodils, roses and marigolds around as it impressed her immensely. The tune of the birds flying overhead made her have somewhat a quiet mindset. The water splashed as an old couple tried to throw rocks playfully on the stream.

She suddenly saw the birds flocking on their food; someone was throwing those as the birds followed him. Her gaze diverted to the one feeding the birds with a calm smile plastered on his face.

Who knew that she’d find him in here?

It was like magic that she was now watching him happily. It was like ages now that she saw how genuine his smile looked now.

Her heart softened even more, as he patted the bird’s head that nestled on his hand. “Cute…” He uttered, making Krystal flustered.

As the guy looked at her direction, she awkwardly tried to find a place to hide. She looked at a different direction, feeling nervous.

Kai paused as their eyes met. It was not the time to make this cheesy encounter but they were glued to be like that. He looked at her with a determined face as he ran on to her.

Krystal was taken aback by his actions as she took side-steps. “Don’t…stay away from me.” She hid her face with her hand.

“I’m sorry…” He understood her.

“I…I…” Krystal was urging herself to say sorry but she didn’t know how to start.

They were back into square one again.

Kai smacked her on the head, breaking the ice. “Why didn’t you attend your classes?” He tapped her shoulder.

“I…I took a leave of absence to clear my mind.”

“Are you perhaps…” He sighed. “Is this because of what I did? I know that you know of it already. I couldn’t hide it well.”

“Yeah, I’ve heard of it.” Krystal looked at her feet, avoiding his gaze. “And, I don’t like what you did.”

“But, I..I don’t know what to do anymore.” Kai mustered his courage. “Ever since I saw Sehun and you kissing in the rain.”

“You’re there?” She shrieked. Her voice echoed.

“I’ve been trailing you. It was the day I came back from the province.” He rubbed the back of his neck.

“Really?” She slanted her eyebrows. “You saw that?” She felt guilty all of a sudden.

“And, I thought that…” Kai beamed.

Krystal panicked as he did that. So, he was not angry or even…a tiny bit jealous? She frowned.

“…I think both of you best suit each other.”

“What?!” Her legs were trembling. “I don’t like your reaction.” She shot him a look. Krystal hurriedly passed by him, ending their conversation.

Kai held onto her. “What’s up?” He coolly said.

“You’re too cold.” She glared back at him.

“What? What do you want me to do? To get jealous?” He shot back.

“Yeah…to be immensely jealous. So that, I could make you regret that you let me go.”

“I didn’t let you go…” He breathed heavily. “You’re not mine in the first place.”

She pinked, “Don’t even mention something so embarrassing.”

“Then, don’t let me say something so embarrassing…” He got red.

They looked at each other’s eyes and broke into wide smiles.Kai stood behind the tall trees near the neighborhood, picking every trash on sight. He looked exhausted as he wiped the forming sweat on his forehead with the back of his hand. He slanted his eyebrow, looking at the surroundings. He felt that there were many things he needed to do.
