We Just Couldn't Have It All© : Book 1

Love sometimes come and go

Love sometimes welcome you and leave you at the same time

It is truly hard to see it clearer

The face of that person that shines your day

“The sun’s beginning to set…let’s go back for now.” Taemin put his head down. Sulli just followed him to the school entrance.

It always became like that. The after-taste of their moment was the awkward silence they were witnessing right now. The cold air of the month began to stir the two of them.

Taemin waved at the driver and Sulli just went out of the school as she wanted to go to the bus stop.

“Hey…I said to you…don’t reject my offer again.” Taemin called at her. But, she seemed to be absent-minded.

“Just ask Kim Yaera about it.” Sulli titled her head and tried to say goodbye to him.

“Hey! Do you think that it is enough?” Lee Taemin drew closer to her and seized for her hand. He dragged her and threw her body inside the car forcibly.

“YAH! You idiot.” Choi Sulli tried to talk.

But, Lee Taemin just replied with a smirk.

The silence filled the air inside the car. There was not much to be said. And, there was really nothing to do.

“Are you going to Krystal’s match?” Lee Taemin awkwardly went all out just to try to hit a conversation.

“Of course…she’s my friend.”

“Are you coming with someone?”

Something like a nail hit Sulli’s head hard. “Why are you talking like you are my…”

“If you don’t have, just say it.”

“Then, I don’t.” She nonchalantly said and tried to peek at the tinted window.

“Really…then, can you---“ Taemin was about to answer when he remembered his date with Kim Yaera. It was not supposedly a date. But, she insisted like a nagging child and he didn’t want his cover to get blown. He knew that he was the one Yaera was after.

“What?”

“Never mind. Oh, here you are.” Taemin pointed Sulli’s house. They were already at the neighborhood.

It was now time to say goodbye.

Sulli waved back at him until the car’s shadow already disappeared. She smiled sweetly and as if only the air could her, “Kumawo. Taemin-ah…” More than now, it had struck her that it would be better to call him as a friend than an Oppa. She got back to her house.

And, the cycle came again.

The cold air inside the house was colder right now. The absence of laughing people was very evident. Sulli just laid her bag on the sofa and tried to see the dining area.

The maid left her a note.  The maid cooked for her and went out after.

“So, this is what it was…to have a house that is not a home.”

Suddenly, the telephone rang loudly. Sulli tried to pick it up hurriedly. It was her mom’s voice. Sulli jumped into happiness. She hadn’t kept in touch with her mother for ages now.

“How does it go there?” Her mother asked for her status.

“I’m fine.”

Sulli noticed her mother’s tired voice.

“Hmm… well, during your Christmas break, mom and dad would be home.” Her mother giggled at the other line.

“Then…you cannot come right now?” Sulli looked disappointed.

“I know that you are having a cultural festival…but, we couldn’t. Your dad is busy with a project he was working earnestly on.”

“Is that right?”

“Yah, Jinri-yah…you are not a child anymore.”

“I know…goodbye then.”

“Yeah, suit yourself. Don’t stay up too late and eat nutritious foods all the time.”

“Neh.”

Her mother hanged up. With the tone of her mother’s voice, she was probably taking a break on a meeting overseas again. She really wanted her mom to see her but she couldn’t.

The night drew closer as Sulli slept in her room, crying and agonizing due to loneliness.

The morning welcomed Sulli with a smile. It was Sunday in the morning. She woke up, still blinking her eyes. She checked on the clock and smiled. It was Krystal’s match.

She tried to take a shower early in the morning and prepare herself a nice breakfast. She was getting used to the continuous pace of being left alone.

She tried to lay the plate of club sandwiches in the table and tried to watch the television. She was really getting hyped up early in the morning. She thanked this day and wanted to give it more of her thanks, if Krystal could be a worthy player of football.

“Hmmm…” She hummed some tune and tried to change her clothes already. As she was changing, her cellphone kept on ringing, crazily. She couldn’t hear it as she got ready for her departure. She checked on her belongings and decided to go to the place.

“Oh…” She was already at the bus stop. She heard her phone rang continuously.  “Who is this?”

There was a faint voice at the other line. “Sulli-yah…everything got destroyed.”

“What?!” The bus came but Sulli hesitated to get to the bus.

“The…preparations…everything…” It was her male classmate.

“How did it happen?”

“I don’t know. I was just about to run an errand for a teacher early this morning. I picked up papers and as I sent it to him, I found this whole place a mess, totally.”

“Then…” Sulli tried to go to her school. It was closed yet his classmate Kang Soo Hyun got permission. “How come that you could enter?”

“Of course. I’m that same teacher’s son. Let’s go.”

Sulli saw the torn pieces of flyers scattered on the floor. The tables and chairs were damaged. The costumes painted black and the wallpaper on the walls got torn apart as well.

“Let’s just give up.” Sulli was about to collapse, thank God her classmate supported her.

After the incident, Choi Sulli went home almost tearing up. She couldn’t bear to see Krystal right now.  She also remembered that she had to apologize to her due to the scandal.

“I’m sorry…” She sat with her head between her knees. She let her head down. “You’ve always been cheering on me…yet, I’m here again.”

Choi Sulli tried to sleep still in that position. Her drive to keep moving forward seemed to shatter. She had hopes that she could keep in touch with the rest of the class if the café was a success. But, it didn’t turn out that way. Sulli would want to slap that person’s face whoever that person is.

She woke up as it was now two o’clock in the afternoon. She was dying of hunger and tried to eat the leftover club sandwiches nesting the refrigerator. They were cold and she reheated those with the microwave oven.

She sank to the sofa and tried to eat one. She couldn’t help but to get disappointed on herself. She didn’t know what to do and just absent-mindedly ate the food on the plate as if there was no tomorrow. She looked at her phone and saw 15 missed calls from Lee Taemin.

“What is this punk up to?” She just threw her phone as she tried to clean the house to do some things. She didn’t really have any spirit and pretended to keep her cool.

Another call came in. Sulli’s hands were sweating all over; she couldn’t help but to decline his call. But, she couldn’t resist him anymore.

“Hello…” Her voice was hinting that she was glad that he gave a call.

“Annyeong~” But, there was a playful voice of a girl on the other line.

“Kim Yaera?!” Sulli bolted upright. She looked nervous, she raised her eyebrow.

“Neh~” Her voice was teasing Sulli. “Is my gift good to you?”

“Kim Yaera…you what did you do to the ca---“

“Taeminnie-oppa~…” Kim Yaera hanged up after that.

Sulli became more and more infuriated. She got her bag and tried to go to…the soccer match. But, suddenly, she saw a text for her from Kim Yaera.

Sender: Kim Yaera

Message:

HI~ Girl, look at what happened. Our team lost and Krystal got hospitalized. What a good day this is~ You must’ve been wondering why Taemin got so agitated to even call you for fifteen times. Well, it was to inform you that Krystal got an injury. Oh, how about coming to this hospital? I'll give you the address.

I’m not helping you because I hate you but because I want to see you suffer.

Good riddance to you, pal.

May you have a nice cultural festival tomorrow? Annyeong~

“So…Krystal was there.” Sulli rushed to the hospital. There were many people crowding outside of the room. She was able to enter as she announced that she was Krystal’s friend.

“Krystal!” Sulli came to her and held her hand. “Are you alright? Are you hurting somewhere? How is your injury?”

Krystal smirked a little. “I’m fine. But, I heard what happened.”

“From whom?”

“From our clasmates… they were really disappointed.” Krystal ruffled her hair. “I’m sorry for slapping you back there.”

“I’m also sorry…it’s because of me that---“

“You don’t have to worry. Let’s just solve your problem?” She winked and tried to dial a number. “Neh. This is Krystal. Are the preparations done? Please set it up nicely. I don’t want anything to go unfinished by tonight.” She ended the call.

“What did you just---“

“I was planning not to use my influence. But, I don’t want to sit back and let you suffer because of Kim Yaera. She’s not worth it to be your opponent in lo---“

“Krystal, are you okay?” Lee Taemin came with a black bag and with Kim Yaera clinging on his arm. She looked very comfortable and satisfied with everything.

“Annyeong~ Krystal, Annyeong~” The fake smile that was plastered on her face made Sulli’s blood to boil.

“Hey, where is Kai?” Taemin tried to ask Krystal. But, she just shook her head.

“Mnmmm…maybe…” Kim Yaera tried to act like she’s an intelligent person. “I heard that he coincidentally met his parents here.”

“I’ve heard that he’s from a family of doctors.” Sulli looked not so amazed about it. But, she looked more sympathetic into Krystal’s state.

“Sulli-yah, don’t go crying at me tomorrow. Goodbye, oppa.” She planted a kiss to his cheek and decided to leave.

“Aish that girl…” Krystal threw the bouquet of flower Yaera gave her as gift at the door just seconds after she left. “Oppa…do you come to like Yaera?”

“No way…”

“Why do you look so flustered?”

“It was the first time for me to see a girl kiss me like that…”

“Eii…” Krystal couldn’t believe it. “Isn’t Sulli just the right one for you?”

“Yah! Krystal!” Sulli became red all of a sudden.

Krystal smiled as she reconciled with her friend again.
