Together We Make a Family

My mind was fuzzy, the last remnants of a dream being chased away by the realisation that I was awake again. It was a nice dream, something about sitting underneath a big oak tree in a meadow full of flowers but the details were fading fast even as I tried to recall them. With a mental sigh I allowed my brain to focus and cautiously opened one eye. I stared at the large droplets of water running down my bedroom window. I pulled the duvet up over my head to keep out the sound of rain. It was not going to work. My brain was wide awake now. I groaned when the alarm sounded again. My fingers slid around the clock as I found the button to turn off the morning alarm with the annoying buzzing in my ears, I pushed myself up before folding down the covers.

Glancing over at the time, I nearly cursed seeing that I only had fifteen minutes to get to class that was a ten minute ride from home. Jumping out of bed, I frantically tried to get ready for my class. Dressing and brushing through my hair, I didn’t have time to do anything else. Quickly I grabbed all the books that I was going to need and dumped them in my bad.

Without wasting any time, I flagged down a taxi. Unfortunately, the ride to school was twenty minutes long as the road flow was slow due to the rain. The taxi driver dropped me off in front of Seoul University’s entrance. I beamed to myself knowing that I would reach my class soon. My smile dropped as the rain got heavier. I searched my bad for an umbrella to no avail. What was even worse was that the main entrance and Seoul University’s medical school was not connected by shelters.

“Arghh!” I kicked a stone, frustrated with myself.

Outside, the pitiless rain fell, fell steadily, with a fierce malignity that was all too human. Violent droplets of rainwater, thrashed at the ground, with ferocity unparalleled. The force of the impact caused shallow puddles to spit aggressively. I wanted so badly to run to class but I didn’t want my assignment that I had worked so hard for to be wet at the last minute. I puffed my cheeks out and sighed. I contemplated whether to still head to class in that kind of weather.

-----, it’s better to be late than not attending class at all right?

I began to sprint towards the medical school. With a gentle breeze blowing, I felt my body shiver with waves and chills. Continuing to make it to class, I felt the raindrops subside from the crown of my head. Lifting my eyes from the sidewalk, I still saw that it was raining. That was when I noticed there was another pair of footsteps accompanying me. Turning my head towards the direction of the sound, my eyes widened as I recognised the person heading towards me.

“Why are you here?” I started moving again as he followed me, still holding the umbrella over both of our heads.

Her comment was so out of character, so far from what his first impressions of her were, he just stared at her open mouthed. His brain formulated no thoughts other than to register that he was shocked. He closed his mouth, and then looked at his toes before glancing back up to catch her eye. "Shouldn’t a normal person say something like ‘Thank you but you don’t have to do this’?"

I blinked my eyes rapidly at him. “Oh,” was all I could say.

“Don’t you have schedules or something? Usually people like you are very busy.” I asked.

He glanced at me with a smile pulling on one side of his lips more than the other. “I have a week break. This leaves me time to accompany my friend who attends SNU too. ‘People like me’ have a name, you know.”

“Well, you’re EXO’s Kai…” I managed to reply. In fact, that was all I knew about EXO. I was so obsessed about focusing on my studies that I hardly paid attention to any sort of entertainment. Even though, I was walking beside a celebrity, I didn’t felt anxious or nervous. I had no idea why.

“R…right” He stuttered from his blue lips.

“So…you’re a student here?” He questioned as he matched his walking pace with mine.

“Yeah, I’ll be getting my degree in a years’ time. Then, I’ll continue to get my Ph.D.,” I vaguely told him.

“You’re very good looking,” I said softly, looking straight ahead.

“I get that a lot,” He chuckled. “I mean who can resist my charms?” He blushed and looked down at the toes of his shoes.

I rolled my eyes and giggled. Soon, the two of us reached the medical school.

Trotting ahead of me, he reached the door first and opened it for me.

“You don’t have to do that you know.” I said and bowed my head slightly to thank him.

“You mean you can open the doors with books in your arms?” He smiled and closed his umbrella once I was out of the rain.

I glared at him playfully as I passed through the door that was held open by his foot.

“I’ll get it,” He declared to me seeing I was reaching the next door. Trotting up to the next door, he opened for me once more and I passed through.

Kai might be a pain in the neck at times but I couldn’t help but feel my heart warm up from his gentlemanly actions. With the both of us talking all the way to the classroom, I stopped in front of the door as he, once again, opened the door to my classroom for me.

“You don’t have to, I can manage,” I gave him my most reassuring smile.

Moving his head slightly, he caught my eyes with his. “I want to.” He urged me to enter the class, leaving me unable to answer him back. I frowned slightly at his stubbornness and shook my head as I entered the classroom. “Thank you, Kai.” I bowed to him slightly before turning and moving to my seat.

Closing the door behind me, he got a final glance at me settling to my seat. He bit his lips in an attempt to prevent a smile from frowning. “No problem, cutie.” He whispered, putting his hand into his pockets and went to the opposite direction to the nearest café.

Watching the clock, I couldn’t help but watched as the clock ticked by, wondering if Kai would really be there to pick me up. Why would he pick me up? I’m just an ordinary person. Trying not to get my hopes up, I sighed and took down notes.

Without realising it, class ended. The professor stood up at the end of the classroom and asked everyone to hand in their assignment before they left the room.

Placing my paper on the stack, I bowed to the professor, thanking them for the lesson and headed back to my seat to pack my things.

The room soon became empty as I was packing my things. I struggled to carry all the thick medical books in my arms. As I was struggling, one book fell to the floor. Trying to find it even though my hands were occupied, I heard the door close before a hand gently helped to carry the books. Immediately, he began to take all the books from my arms.

“Thanks,” I turned around slowly as I proceeded to carry my laptop.

“Don’t mention it,” Kai smiled at me as he carried the books in his arms.

“Do you have schedules after this?” I questioned him as I started to make my way towards the door.

“No~I told you I would come back and help you,” He flashed a smile, showing his pearly white teeth.

“Thank you but I don’t want to pull you away from other things that are important to you,” I explained as I watched him open the door for me once more.

“I have nothing better to do,” He reassured me as I moved through the door. “Do you have classes after this?”

“That was the only one for me,” I told him as we headed towards the main doors again.

“I see,” He whispered as he nodded his head.

“Noooooooooooo, it’s still raining,” I whined to myself, pressing my face against the glass door.

“D…do you w…want to have coffee with me?” Kai stuttered, he didn’t want to leave me just yet.

“What about your friend?” I glanced over at him.

“He went home,” He looked at his feet, his face flushing a deep scarlet.

“I would love to, Kai! That is really sweet of you,” I cooed, leaving a flustered Kai who was turning beet red behind.
