The Morning Before the Dance

The Heartbreaker's Game

Kris’ POV

The next morning, I walked out of my room after bathing and getting dressed in plain slacks and a white tee, to see Eun Hae in the kitchen, dressed in her school uniform, making breakfast for Lu Han.

“Morning,” she said brightly when she looked up to see me. She placed the plate of freshly made udon mee on a tray. Then she carried it back to her room. “Lu Han, it’s time for breakfast!”

I chuckled softly, grabbing an apple from the fruit basket by the counter and took a big bite out of it. I sat by the counter and looked at the clean kitchen. I shook my head, taking another bite of my apple, munching thoughtfully as I listened to the faint buzzing of Eun Hae and Lu Han conversing in their room.

And here I thought I would have to help Lu Han get the girl to fall in love. There was no need; she was already in love with him.

But Lu Han on the other hand, is a bit slow at grasping the concept that she was already for him.

I wonder why. Normally his senses are quite sharp. But now he’s all ‘go-with-the-flow’ kind which isn’t like him. He’s the type of guys who always have a plan and will stick to it, following what comes next.

Eun Hae came out a few minutes later, looking rather happy. “Lu Han looks better today, Yi Fan-sshi!” she chirped cheerfully. She skipped to the kitchen to put the tray back into the cupboard.

I shook my head. Was she always this cheerful, even after all the drama that happened in her life? I wonder how she managed to stay so positive and so happy. I mean, her parents kicked her out when she was twelve and her brothers abandoned her when her boyfriend and his best friend tried to her.

She lifted her bag and slung it over her shoulder. Then she sat down to tie her shoelaces. Then she stood up. “I’m off to school now!” she announced and began to walk out of the front door.7

“Hey, Eun Hae-sshi,” I called and she turned around. “Why don’t I walk you to school today?”

She blinked, surprised.

Lu Han came thundering out of the room, still in his boxers, with a horrified look on his face. He must have had heard what I said.

I was about to laugh when I stopped short, noticing something different about that little pink. He looked so much better now, almost as though he wasn’t sick anymore. Way better, I thought suspiciously. And I remembered he looked as though he was dying last night. How could he had miraculous gotten well overnight, with the dance only tomorrow? That was almost impossible.

Not unless . . .

He faked being sick?!

“Lu Han, go back to bed!” Eun Hae chastised.

“I was going to take Eun Hae to school!” he protested. He eyed me suspiciously, wondering why I would offer to walk her to school.

“You’re sick,” Eun Hae shot back. She turned to me and smiled. “Sure, no problem.” She walked out of the door and I followed, smirking at Lu Han who was worried for Eun Hae, as though she was a pig being sent out for slaughter.

Sheesh, am I that intimidating?

We walked to the lift. Thank goodness it was on the same floor so the doors immediately sprang open when I pressed the ‘down’ arrow. We stepped inside. Eun Hae was the nearest to the buttons, but I reached out to press ‘G’ the same time she did, and our fingers briefly touched for two seconds.

But two seconds was all I needed as I closed my eyes to concentrate.

When I opened my eyes, Eun Hae had retreated her fingers, blushing madly. She looked down and fiddled with the hem of her skirt. And then awkward silence filled the air in the small lift.

“You’ve had a bad past, huh?” I murmured softly.

She looked at me. “Huh?” she asked quizzically.

“Your past,” I repeated. “You know, like what happened from when you were born up until now. You had a bad one.” It was a statement, not a question.

Her face clouded. “Lu Han told you?” she asked, her voice bitter and crisped.

I shook my head and she breathed a sigh of relief, and her face returned to the normal happy self. “I saw.”

“Excuse me?” she asked incredulously. She took a few steps back as if she was scared I was some stalker.

I admit, I did sound stalkerish. Okay, I sound really much like a stalker.

“Just now, when we touched for two seconds,” I began explaining to her, “I saw all the events that happened in your life before. That’s my second power. I can see your past just by a touch. Within two seconds, or depending on how old you are, I can see everything that had happened.” I looked at her.

“So . . . you see their past whenever you touch them?”

I shook my head. “I only see it if I want to. Like I can hold your hand freely without seeing anything.” I thought about how to explain it. Eun Hae still looked pretty confused by my second power. Aha, I know how! “I can control it, in a way. I mean, imagine me trying to have with a girl but instead in my mind all I see is how other guys ed her before. Make sense, no?”

She nodded. She looked curiously at me. “So, uh, what did you see when you touched my finger just now?” she wanted to know.

I wondered what I should tell her I knew. But then again, she knew I saw everything. “I saw your parents . . . Changjo . . . B.A.P . . . Yongguk . . . and even Daehyun . . .”

We walked out of the lift, out of the building and onto the street. I looked around and saw how bright the sun was. Cars on the road were zooming by us, dogs barking in their front lawns at the poor newspaper boy, people washing their car on the road, and I even saw a mother ushering her kids into the car and their dad drove out of the curb to drive them to school.

I missed this sort of life in Exo before I started the Game with stupid Suho. I always wanted to have a family.

She blushed but it was soon replaced by a scowl when I said that particular name. “Daehyun? What about that ?” she mumbled, looking down.

“I knew he meant more than the others to you,” I replied.

“Listen, Yi Fan-sshi —”

“Kris.”

“What?” she asked blankly.

“I prefer people calling me Kris,” I explained. “I am Chinese, but I was born in Canada, so my parents thought they’d give me an English name, therefore I got the name Kris. Lu Han, on the other hand, was born in China, so he doesn’t get any English name at all.” I just smiled and for a moment, I actually believed that Lu Han was really my brother but really he wasn’t.

I shook my head. Aish, you’re getting into your lies.

She gave me an exasperated look. “Anyway, Kris-sshi,” she went on, emphasizing on my name, “whatever bond Daehyun and I had has been long broken.”

We turned into a corner and bumped into none other than Daehyun.

He blinked, surprised to see us standing here. He eyed me suspiciously and I just shrugged. He looked at Eun Hae. “Did you say my name?”

She scoffed and folded her arms across her chest. “Why would I even be talking about you?” she shot back.

He frowned. “I was so sure . . .” he mused thoughtfully, more to himself than to Eun Hae. He looked at her.

“You either need to clean your ears or you’re starting to hallucinate,” she said nastily and I raised my eyebrows. She seemed so sweet, but I guess when she is angry, she goes all the way out to make them hurt. “I was talking to him about Daeseul. You know, my best friend? Not you, Daehyun.” She shook her head. She grabbed my hand. “Come on, let’s go.”

I ignored that guy and went on. I looked at her. She had a frown on her face as if he had ruined her mood. “Someone’s defensive.”

“Shut up.”

“Right.”

She grimaced. Then she paused. “So . . . you know everything?”

I nodded. “Everything,” I confirmed.

She winced slightly. “Kris-sshi —”

“Call me gege or oppa.” She glared at me and I just shrugged. “Just saying.”

“Lu Han doesn’t know everything about me, Kris-sshi.” Aish, this girl is so stubborn. Just like her. I shook my head dismissively. “Are you going to tell him?” she went on. “I mean . . . you do know everything?” She sounded hopeful, as though I will say that I do not know everything.

“I know,” I said and her face fell. I shrugged. “It’s not my secrets to tell him about this,” I replied. I looked at her. “How long more?”

“Five more minutes and then we should be at the cafe,” she replied. She checked the time. “Daeseul should be there by now.”

The whole walk to the cafe was quiet. So when we arrived, we saw that her friend wasn’t there yet. She texted her and soon a message came in. She frowned when she read the message. “Daeseul said she’s not coming to school today.” She shrugged and looked at me. “I can walk myself to school from here, thanks.”

I shrugged casually. “If you say so. I’m going to get myself a cup of coffee.” I pointed to the cafe and we departed our separate ways.

Hmmm, I see beautiful girls. Maybe I should hang around here for a while.

Daeseul’s POV

I sighed and looked out of the window. It was three in the afternoon and I was still in bed. I didn’t want to go to school because I didn’t want to see Eun Hae. I know, that’s a really lame excuse.

I don’t hate her.

I really don’t. It’s just that I don’t want to see the pity look in her eyes. No, she won’t pity me. She’ll feel bad for me and start feeling guilty. I do not want to see the guilt in her eyes. And I don’t want to look at her and wish that she was me, or that I was her.

My door was swung opened and my step-brother Jaehyo came inside with a worried frown on my face. He came to feel my forehead. “You don’t have a fever,” he murmured. He looked at me seriously and knew that something was not right. “What’s wrong?”

“Nothing.”

He raised an eyebrow, not believing me. He sat down next to me on my bed and gave me a hard stare. Then he shrugged, knowing I wouldn’t tell him. “The dance is tomorrow,” he said, trying to change subject, “Do you have a date for the dance?”

I shook my head miserably. I wanted to go to the dance with Kai, but since Eun Hae is with him I guess I’m going stag. It will feel odd. I usually have dates, but I guess I wasted my time chasing after Kai that now it is too late to even ask the craziest or the worst possible choice of guys for a date.

My step-brother bit his bottom lip, thinking. “Why don’t Block B be your dates?” he asked.

“Bwoh? Chincha?” Am I hearing correct?

He nodded. “I’m sure the others would want to go. I mean, all you have to say is ‘party’ and they’ll be there.” He grimaced. “If you’re worried about Zico, I’ll make him be on his best behaviour. Eun Hae is going, right?”

I nodded. “Yeah,” I said slowly. I smiled warmly at him. I would not want Zico to ruin her relationship with Kai anyways. “Thanks, Oppa. It’s really nice and thoughtful of you.”

He gave a small smile, something which I’ve never seen before. “I’ll go call them,” he said and got up, leaving me in my room.

I sighed, flopping back in my bed. I should be happy. I mean, if I go out with Kai, I’ll have one date. But with Block B, I have five (not counting my own brother and Zico).

Still . . .

Chapter 10: I like that she does not let YongGuk disrespect her but I'm a little annoyed as in how easy she let LuHan convince her and be as rude as YongGuk is (without the ual harrassment of course) and let it slide.
