Not What You Expect

The Heartbreaker's Game

“Oh! Oh! There they are! I see him! I see her! I see him!” XiuMin pointed excitedly to the screen. He stood up and began jumping up and down, flapping his arms, in excitement.

“There are two of them. Which ‘him’ are you talking about?” Chen wanted to know.

But XiuMin didn’t hear him and went on, “You know what that look on Lu Han’s face mean, right?!”

“Forget I asked anything.” Chen rolled his eyes and turned to the screen.

“Go Gege!” Tao cheered.

“Lu Han gege is challenging the enemy!” Lay said gleefully, shaking his unicorn soft toy up and down, abusing the poor unicorn.

Kris looked up from where he was reading newspaper in the dining room as he sat on one of the chairs around the dining table to the living room where the other boys were once sitting (now standing up) as they watched the Game.

“Gege is going to win for sure,” Chen said with confidence and sat back down on the sofa. “He’s already captured her heart. She just needs to confess.”

“That Kai don’t stand a chance,” Tao agreed, hugging his panda soft toy.

“Uh-huh,” XiuMin said, taking another bite of his bao.

“Damn, she’s pretty,” Tao drooled, going gaga. “If only I was chosen this year. Maybe I would have stood a chance with her.”

Lay hit his head. “Don’t be ridiculous.”

“She’ll probably run away, screaming,” Chen snickered.

“She’ll probably like me better,” XiuMin giggled.

Chen, Lay and Tao all turned to stare at this chipmunk, bun-like cheeks, person in disbelief. “Hell no,” they said tactlessly.

His face fell.

“Oooh! Look how she’s clinging onto Lu Han like a lovesick puppy!” Tao suddenly gushed. “Hehe!”

Kris looked and sure enough, Tao was right. He smiled to himself, proud of Lu Han, proud he had been the one to train him. Lu Han was the most reliable one out of all five of them. But he had to admit it, that even though Lu Han was up and he was confident Exo-M will win, he’s beginning to wonder what he’s getting himself into, staying in a house with a bunch of idiots, especially with Tao and XiuMin. Thank goodness Chen and Lay don’t give him much of a headache like the other two did.

“Lu Han gege is definitely going to win! I can feel it!” Tao exclaimed. “I can foresee the future and he’ll win this game, making us in the lead by one!”

“A stupid person can’t be a physic, but I had to agree with you on this one for once,” Chen agreed.

“Thanks — hey! Did you just call me stupid?”

“Now only he knows?” XiuMin wondered scathingly.

“You can’t exactly say anything,” Lay muttered.

Baozi sent daggers at his direction through his eyes. “Watch it.”

“Yah, you guys,” Kris finally called out and they looked distractedly e ear to him, their eyes still fixed on the screen.

“What is it, dui zhang?” XiuMin asked.

“It’s time to meet Exo-K.”

Meanwhile, in the main Hall, Exo-K had already assembled there, watching the Game as they waited for the arrival of Exo-M.

“Hyung kissed her on the lips! He kissed her! Woohoo!” Sehun cried out with glee. But then his face fell. “Aww, she’s rejecting him.”

Chanyeol shook his head and sighed. “That’s actually not fair, that the other guy met her first,” he said, pointing out his displeasure.

She hugged the enemy.

To their dismay, they watched the part where Lu Han came up toward Kai and Eun Hae and Eun Hae ran over to him, hugging him.

D.O sighed. “Seriously, that guy must be cheating of something,” he muttered darkly. “How could he just appear and make her run to his side immediately?”

“It’s not fair,” Sehun added miserably.

Suho and Baekhyun exchanged glances before Baekhyun decided to speak up. “Hey, on the bright side, you know how stubborn Kai can be, right?” he said and the others turned to him. “This means that Kai will still fight and won’t easily give up. Eventually he will win her heart and he will win the Game.”

The others nodded, their spirit boosted with the pep talk.

“I hope he doesn’t forget my G-strings,” Sehun said out of nowhere in particular and had this really creepy smile. He had this faraway, dreamy gaze.

Chanyeol smacked his face with his palm.

“What did you hit me for?” he protested angrily, glaring at his hyung.

“I didn’t hit you,” Chanyeol replied with a straight face. “I high-fived your face.”

D.O facepalmed.

“Oh look, D.O just high-fived his own face!” Chanyeol went on, laughing like a crazy lunatic, as though he thought he was very funny.

Baekhyun looked down and pinched the bridge of his nose while the three of them stirred up trouble. He looked up to see his leader yawning. “Are you all right?” he asked with concern. “I mean, you seemed really tired lately.”

“Of course, someone needed to stay up to watch the Game until Kai falls asleep,” he replied. He looked enviously at the maknae who seemed to be glowing with so much energy. Suho looked back at Baekhyun. “But I noticed today during training you and D.O were slacking a bit. Had not enough sleep too?”

Baekhyun nodded. He looked at Sehun as well. “But that idiot seemed to be bursting with so much vigour.”

By then everyone else had turned to join in the conversation.

Sehun beamed, glad that they were praising him like this as it was it was rare that he gets any praises. “I’m a good trainee,” he boasted. “I sleep at ten.”

“Sleeping early doesn’t mean you’re a good trainee,” D.O argued. “I mean, you could sleep however late you want and do a good job still.”

“But I sleep early so I don’t feel so tired,” Sehun pointed out, “so I’ll be able to focus on my training and do more work. It helps the brain to function properly.”

Chanyeol eyed him up and down and scoffed. “Doesn’t seem to be working,” he remarked and slapped high-fives with D.O.

“Hyung!” Sehun whined.

“Ahem.” Someone coughed in front of them.

They looked up to see five strangers standing before them. Suho stood up from his seat and acknowledged the one standing in front. “Kris,” he said, his voice filled with bitterness and competiveness.

Kris nodded, eyeing the other members of Exo-K.

Sehun, Chanyeol, D.O and Baekhyun stood loyally behind Suho as they and XiuMin, Lay, Chen and Tao eyed each other with curiosity.

Kris looked behind Suho, at Exo-K. “It’s nice to finally meet Exo-K,” he said, his voice filled with heavy sarcasm.

“It’s nice to see the losers of Exo-M,” Suho snapped and Kris’ smirked turned into a grimace.

Chanyeol, Baekhyun, D.O, Sehun, XiuMin, Chen, Tao and Lay, however, had the same thought in their minds: I’m supposed to hate them . . . but how come I don’t feel such hatred like hyung/dui zhang do?

Lu Han’s POV

I gave Kai a scathing look and said, “If you don’t mind, I’d like to have a word with Eun Hae,” I said.

“We have to get to work.”

“I’ll walk her there myself,” I snapped coolly.

“No —”

Eun Hae looked at him pleadingly and I knew she wanted to be with me. That made me feel better, knowing she preferred me over him.

He scowled but disappeared within the next second. He couldn’t have turned invisible because I would be able to see him. I looked around and saw no sign of him anywhere. Good, that meant he had gone to work or something. Now I can be alone with Eun Hae and ask her why she kissed him of all people!

Eun Hae turned to me and we walked over to the lift, waiting for it. “Did you control my dreams again?”

I frowned, confused. “Huh?”

She shrugged. “I dreamt that you kissed me,” she confessed, looking down. “And when I woke up, I felt this tingling feeling on my lips.”

My frown deepened. The lift’s door opened and we stepped inside. I pressed ‘G’ for ground floor. “I can only control your dreams if I’m right next to you,” I replied. “If I knew I could control your dreams even when I’m on some other planet, I would. That way, you’d fall for me even more, right?”

She scoffed, rolling her eyes.

I thought about it.

She dreamt I kissed her. That meant she was thinking about me before she fell asleep. But when she woke up, she felt a tingling feeling on her lips. So why was –?

Oh.

I facepalmed and groaned inwardly. Why doesn’t this surprise me? I should have guessed! Goodness. Kai must have kissed her when she was sleeping but of course she didn’t know and thought it was me, especially because I was in her dreams!

I looked over at Eun Hae who had this blank expression on her face as we went down the lift. I shook my head. Eun Hae is so blur sometimes that it’s actually kind of cute.

Cute?

No, no. Annoying. I meant to say annoying. I mean, she’s so blur that she gets into all sort of trouble!

We walked to her work in silence. Her hands were swinging by her sides it was distracting so I grabbed her hand and she turned to look at me, blinking with confusion.

Damn, why is she so cute in everything she does?

“It’s annoying,” I told her.

“Oh.” She shrugged and let me held her hand.

Once we reached the café, Kai was there and he scowled when we approached him. “What took you so long?” he snapped.

“You could have just gone in without her,” I snapped back. I looked at her. “I’m going to come in. I’ll stay invisible and out of your way, okay?”

She nodded and squeezed my hand.

I turned invisible. Kai turned and saw what I was doing and scoffed, looking bitter. He’s such a sour grape.

We stepped inside and their boss came running toward us. He threw an apron and a pen and notebook at them. “Hurry! Kai, you take table five and Eun Hae takes table eight, all right? Remember, serve with a smile. Kay, thanks, bye!” He rushed to do other work.

Kai sighed and wore his apron and I helped Eun Hae with hers invisibly.

She looked up and froze, staggering a bit, and Kai and I watched as her eyes went wide and the pen and notebook began slipping from her hand. I held her in my arms before she fell backward as Kai quickly snatched the pen and notebook from the air before it fell to the ground.

We looked worriedly at her. We followed her gaze toward the table she was supposed to serve and saw a happy married couple in their early thirties like that (you could tell they were married by the rings on their fingers) having a nice chat together.

“Umma and Appa,” she said faintly.

Chapter 10: I like that she does not let YongGuk disrespect her but I'm a little annoyed as in how easy she let LuHan convince her and be as rude as YongGuk is (without the ual harrassment of course) and let it slide.
