Chapter 14

JUST Common Sense

Soyoung’s POV

Why is he here? Why are they here? Trying to make themselves look good? Please, it doesn’t work around me and I’m not afraid to show my hatred either. I freaking saved the girl’s life and he was telling me how stupid I am. Yeah, apology not accepted.

I sat on my bed, angered at the memory. What kind of guy does that? Does he think he’s so good looking that he gets an advantage? Does he expect me to forgive him because he’s so good looking? Crazy.

I flopped down onto my bed and groaned.

Why am I still angered about this? Well, I have every right to be, but I hate that I’m so bothered about it. I hate that his response to saving the little girl was calling me stupid. I freaking saved her!

-Knock Knock-

I looked towards my door and sighed. “Who is it?”

I hear fidgeting before a sweet voice spoke. “May I come in?”

I sat up right away. I think I have an idea of who it may be. “Yeah, come on in.”

The door knob turned and in came the little girl I saved. Mei Lien, I think that was her name.

She gave me a shy smile before closing the door. I couldn’t help but smile back. I have a soft spot for kids, okay? Don’t blame me. I’m really not bipolar, or anything. Kids are cute.

“Hi,” I spoke softly to her as she approached to me but kept her distance. “What are you doing here?”

“I wanted to talk to you, jie jie,” she spoke.

Her Korean was a bit off, but I understood it. She’s Chinese and so hearing her talk Korean was a bit surprising, yet I couldn’t blame her. I remember mom and dad talking about her family once. Something about them being very rich business men too. So I guess she had to learn other languages.

“You want to talk to me?” I was taken aback. This little girl wanted to talk to me? Why? “Sure, come sit here.” I patted my bed and she happily climbed on, seating herself next to me.

Her smile was adorable. I had the urge to reach out and pinch her rosy cheeks, but refrained myself from doing so.

Jie jie, thank you for saving me,” she said with guilt in her eyes. I laughed upon seeing this and hearing her words.

Gosh, I’m so glad she knows Korean. If not, communicating would be very hard because as a daughter of business people, I’m horrible at language. I’ve never found interest in it and never wanted to learn any other languages.

“No problem,” I replied and ruffled her hair. “I don’t want such a cute girl like you to in an accident either. It wouldn’t be fair, right?”

She brightened and giggled. “Jie jie, what’s your name? I’m Mei Lien. I hear they call you Soyoung, so is that your name?”

I nodded with a light smile, “That’s my name.”

“Soyoung jie jie, you’re very pretty, you know that?” she giggled. Her eyes sparkled as she did so.

I blushed upon hearing her compliment. I don’t get compliments like that a lot. It’s rare almost. Sure, Zico would say it, but it’s Zico. The guy would say it to any other girls. Kyung’s a different story. When he tells me I’m pretty, duhh, his sarcasm kicks in right then. The only time when he tells me I'm pretty and is actually sincere about it, is when I'm bawling my eyes out and that hasn't happened since middle school. My parents are my parents. They like to flatter me with compliments. But coming from a little girl, that’s a different story.

“Am I?” I played along. Coming from a kid, I’m not sure whether to accept it or set it aside.

“Yup!” she nodded her head quickly. “When I first saw you, I thought you’re very pretty and your boyfriend is very handsome too. You guys make a very cute couple!”

“Boyfriend?” Another surprise attack. What boyfriend was she talking about?

“Yeah, your boyfriend with the cool blue car!” she exclaimed as I could see her think about the car. Talking about blue cars, I have a feeling of who she was talking about.

I laughed, “He’s not my boyfriend, Mei Lien. He’s just a friend.”

“The handsome ge ge is just a friend?” her eyes opened widely causing me to crack up before nodding. “Why aren’t you guys a couple? He’s handsome and you’re really pretty. You guys would make a cute couple, jie jie.”

“I just don’t like him in that way,” I replied politely, still thinking the idea of me and Zico dating to be very funny. We’ve never really thought about us like that before. He’s handsome, yes, but I’ve never really seen him as more than a friend.

“Oh,” her shoulders slumped before she rose again with a bright grin. “Then you should think about it.”

I blushed once more, not meaning to do so. Think about dating him, Zico?

"I think --"

Just then, the door opened and in came the guy we were talking about with a bag of food in his hands.

“Oh, I didn’t know you have a visitor in your room,” Zico grinned before walking over to the desk and putting the food on my desk. He came over and sat next to me, wrapping his arms around my waist and rested his chin on my shoulders. “Hi there. My name’s Zico. What’s yours?” He grinned at Mei Lien.

So I forgot that Zico was coming over to bring me some food that I wanted… and now that he’s here, it became awkward. The pose that Zico and I was in was an invalid pose at the moment after telling Mei Lien that we weren’t dating, but the look in her eyes says otherwise.

“I’m Mei Lien,” she responded, eyes widen upon seeing Zico’s actions towards me.

“Nice to meet you, Mei Lien,” he reached over me and ruffled Mei Lien’s hair.

She just nodded before landing her eyes on me again. I faked a mini laugh, “It’s not what you think, Mei Lien. We’re just friends, really. He’s always like this, so…”

“What were you guys talking about?” Zico got up and I could feel his warmth leaving me. He came back with the bag of food and took out a bag of chips and handed it to Mei Lien. “I was planning to give this to Soyoung, but you can have it. You’re our special guest today.”

She happily took it and opened it. “Thanks, ge ge!”

Zico laughed and shook his head. “Anytime. I got more in the bag anyways.” He gave me a different type of chips and I pried it open without any second thought. “Ahh,” he said as he opened his mouth in my direction. Forgetting what Mei Lien thought about me and Zico, I fed Zico with chips from my bag and eating some in the process too.

“You guys act more like couples than friends though, jie jie,” Mei Lien then said upon seeing our actions.

I coughed and Zico did so right after me. He quickly took out a water bottle out of the bag and handed it to me as he pounded his chest to stop the coughing. I chugged the water down my throat as my coughing eased.

“Okay…” Zico began once we stopped coughing. “What were you guys really talking about before I got here?”

I reddened and avoided his gaze. Instead, Mei Lien did the talking.

“We talked about how Soyoung jie jie and you should become an official couple. You guys are so cute together,” Mei Lien smiled before eating more chips.

Zico looked over at me for confirmation. All I could do was give a sheepish smile. This is embarrassing… OTL. He looked back at Mei Lien. “You think we look good as a couple?”

Mei Lien nodded.

Zico smirked and wrapped his arms around my waist and pulled me back into his chest as my eyes rounded. “Yeah, I’ve been thinking about it too, you know? We do look good, don’t we?”

What is he doing? Oh my gosh, Zico, what are you doing?! This isn’t time to act up!

“Why don’t you just ask jie jie to go out with you?” Mei Lien suggested. This girl sure knows how to talk. I didn’t think she’d be at the age of knowing about dating yet.

“Hmmm, maybe I will.” I could hear the smirk in his voice and it made me want to elbow him in the guts but resisted from doing so because of Mei Lien still being here.

Mei Lien, come on! Let’s go!” I heard Luhan’s voice rang as it came closer to my room. Before I knew it, the door opened and Luhan paused.

He was looking, no staring. He was staring at Zico and me. Our position. Zico’s really gonna get it. This is too embarrassing.

Luhan shifted his gaze to Mei Lien and forced a cough. “Mei, we have to go. Come on.

Okay,” Mei Lien got up and bowed to Zico and me. “I’m going. Zico ge ge, hwaiting!” and then she strolled out of the room with Luhan, letting the door close.

Right away when the door closed, I elbowed him in the guts and turned around to face him.

“Ahh!” he yelped in pain before smiling sheepishly seeing my glare. The guy quickly grabbed the bag of chips and stuffed his mouth.

“Yah!” I shouted at him, yet he didn’t show the slightest flinch. I sighed in defeat. “You are so annoying.” I rolled my eyes and leaned forward to pinch his cheeks hard.

“Ahhh!” he yelped, pulling away and rubbing his sore cheeks as he chewed softly. The pout on his face wasn’t helping me to yell at him. Mei Lien was right, he’s handsome. Too handsome that I can’t do anything to him. Urgh! “That hurts,” he pouted.

I sighed, feeling bad and rubbed his cheeks for him. “Then don’t do that next time, dummy.” I lightly patted his cheeks. “Does it still hurt?”

“Your pinches are deadly,” he whined before slightly poking my forehead. He tilted his head to the side and examined my cheek. “Your bruise isn’t noticeable. Does it even hurt if I put pressure on it?”

“Yeah, sort of,” I pulled away, putting a hand on my bruised cheek. “But I’ll manage. Mom thought it was from the car accident, so no more hiding.”

Zico rolled his eyes. “Of course it would be that way. Hmm, but tell me, why were they here?”

Knowing he was referring to Luhan, I explained. “To ‘thank’ me and ‘apologize’ for putting me through such troubles, or so he says.” I cringed. I couldn’t help but want to punch Luhan in the face. Jerk he is. At the thought, I clenched my tight fist in which my best friend took notice of. “That’s the stupidest, worst, and most disgusting act I’ve ever seen!” I shouted. I was angry. Who wouldn’t be?

Whoa, whoa, whoa,” Zico put his hands up. “Calm down and tell me why you say so, will you? I’m still not sure of what he said to you yesterday.”

For the sake of Zico, I took a deep breath before slumping my shoulders.

“You know how I saved Mei Lien?” I asked him.

“…Sure,” he suggested. “Okay, so you saved her. What then?”

I sighed for the umpteenth time before taking a pillow and hugging it. For some reason, I was beginning to feel uncomfortable. “Well, I saved her and almost busted my head in the process. The highlight of that was that Mei Lien and I both made it out alive. I saved her just in time but the jerk had to let it out on me.”

Zico cocked an eyebrow. “And by that, you mean?”

I hugged the pillow tighter, averting my gaze to the pattern design on my bed sheet.

“He forgave the driver and let him drive off then he totally just… He walked passed me to Mei Lien then he faced me. I thought he was going to say thank you… I thought --" I sniffed. I wasn’t quite sure why tears started forming and why my nose started getting runny. I don’t even know why I’m feeling sad over this. “I seriously thought he was going to thank me, but he freaking told me off. He told me I was stupid for doing that.”

“He what?” Zico’s eyes widened. So I wasn’t the only one seeing Luhan as a jerk.

“He said I was stupid because I could have cost two lives to end instead of one. He said that one life was better, so I was stupid that I risked our lives like that.” By then, I was bawling my eyes out and I didn’t even notice the fact that Zico had moved to sit by me while letting me cry onto him. He was comforting me in which I’m grateful for.

I’m not one to cry easily, so I don’t even know why I cried for something like this. This was a freaking stupid reason to cry. I’m stupid.

“Wow, what a jerk he is,” Zico hissed. He knew, if I cried about it, of course it’d be something big. The problem is, it isn’t anything big. So again, why am I crying over this? “Do you want me to give him a beating?”

I shook my head, wiping my tears away. “No. Just leave him. I don’t want anything to do with him.”

He nodded and pulled back, helping me wipe my remaining tears. “Come on. Let’s go visit Kyung’s mom.”

I nodded this time as he helped pulled me up.
