Chapter 6

JUST Common Sense

Soyoung’s POV

Today, will be a refreshing day. It has to be. I have two weeks left of this summer before I go off to start college. Zico, Kyung and I had planned to go out today. I’m not exactly sure where we’re headed to, but I know that Zico has the place chosen, like always. Plus, it’s not just the three of us. They’re inviting some of their friends that didn’t go to high school with us. I think I’ve seen them once or twice but it was just quick glances. Now, I get to hang out with them. How fun would that be to hang out with 5 other versions of Zico and Kyung?

I dressed myself up in a comfy outfit for an outside summer day. One thing Zico did tell me was that we were going to be outside most of the time, so why not wear something that I would feel good in?

I grabbed my phone and made my way downstairs to watch T.V as I waited for my ride.

“Are you leaving yet?” my mom asked as she placed herself besides me.

I shook my head. “Soon, but not yet. Zico said he’ll be here in ten minutes.”

“Where are you guys going anyways?” She offered me some chips that she brought with her from the kitchen. I took a piece ad ate it, repeatedly doing that.

I shrugged in the process. “He hasn’t told me yet, but he did say that we’re going to be outside for the most part of the day.”

“Oh really?” she took interest when I mentioned outside. Wonder why? “Then you guys should take Luhan with you!”

*Figured. Ugh.*I cocked an eyebrow. “Mom, please. Enough with Luhan.”

Every day, and I mean EVERY single day, either mom or dad would mention Luhan, suggesting we do something together. They’ve been doing this for the past few weeks and it’s not even cool anymore. I mean, it’s obvious that I don’t want to do anything with him nor does he want to do anything with me. “Luhan wouldn’t want to go. Plus, we barely know each other. What makes you think he would come along?”

“Oh, but I think he will come along,” mom replied, taking the remote from me and rummaging through the channels. “He loves the sun and nature.”

I laughed. “Luhan? Luhan loves the sun? Please, that one time when he came over to stay at our place for three days straight because their house has no electricity or water, he stayed in the guest room 24/7. Luhan loves the sun? Please, too funny here, mom. Nice try though.”

It’s true, though. When he came over to stay because the electiracyt and the water wasn’t working at his place, which was two weeks ago, all he did was whatever he did in the guest room. He would only come out when we call him for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Other times would only be when mom and dad are home, which they barely were.

She gave me a look, “I’m not playing here though, Soyoung. He does. He’s barely at home because he goes out a lot, into the sun, you know?”

“Oh really?” There was thick sarcasm of interest in my voice. “Then he can go alone, again. He’s not coming with us.”

“Aigoo, I have such a mean daughter,” my mom rolled her eyes before slapping my thigh, “And who told you he goes out alone? He has more friends than you’ll ever do.”

“So he goes out with his friends?” So I guess that’s a bit surprising, but their probably loners like him, right? I mean, he barely spoke when we were younger. He has to be the type with no friends, no matter how good looking he was.

“Of course! Who would go out almost 24/7 without any friends?” She gabbed some chips and filled with it. “I really think you should invite him and his friends.”

“No, I’m good, really,” I replied getting up as I just got a text from Zico that he was outside. “Besides, it’s too late to invite him. I’m leaving right now. Zico’s already here. I think I’m coming back after dinner so eat and don’t wait for me, okay? And if you or dad need anything, make sure to call me, okay?” I spoke as I slipped on my shoes.

“Aigoo, look at my girl,” my mom cooed before giving me a goodbye hug. “Have fun and take care, okay? And be back before 10 PM or call if you’re gonna sleep over at Jiho’s place.”

“Yeah,” I answered, walking out the door and jumping into the car with Zico.

“Don’t worry Mrs. Kim!” Zico ducked his head to look out the window at omma. “I’ll bring her back before 10 o’clock!” He yelled as if he had heard omma’s words.

“Okay! Okay!” mom smiled. “Just go and have fun!”

No One's POV

The windows were open as Zico drove, whipping Soyoung’s own hair in her face as she pulled her hair back, smiling with the wind. She turned to look at Zico, escaping the wind for just a moment.

“Where are we going?” she asked with curiosity. She was excited. The way she spoke was a dead giveaway and Zico knew it.

Zico glanced at her quickly before setting his eyes on the road again. “Somewhere,” he grinned. Soyoung rolled her eyes.

“No, really?” the sarcasm in her voice was thick and noticeable. “I’m serious, I really want to know. Can’t you just tell me now?”

“You’ll know when we get there,” Zico chuckled, putting his hand outside the window to feel the immense wind that collided on his palm.

She humphed before turning to look out the window again. “It better be worth it.”

“Trust me,” Zico laughed, turning a corner. “It is.”

And he was right. They arrived at a park that Soyoung’s never been to before, where the others already were. She knew it was them because their faces were familiar and the fact that Kyung was with them made it obvious it was them. She quickly jumped out of the car and ran over to them, waving.

“Hi guys!” Soyoung yelled happily as she approached them. She stopped at Kyung’s side, holding onto his arm as the others waved at her.

“Soyoung, right?” The shorter guy with O-shaped glasses asked with a tender smile. Soyoung nodded, glad that he had remembered her name.

“And if I’m correct, you’re Taeil?” She couldn’t help but ask. What if she didn’t ask and ended up calling him the wrong name? She was relieved when Taeil nodded.

“Correct!” His eyes were curved into crescent moons while the others waited for Zico, who walked slow as ever.

“Yah,” Soyoung shouted out towards Zico. “Hurry up! Why are you so slow?”

He tucked his hands into his pockets, “I don’t have the energy like the little kid you are!”

Soyoung faked a small scowl, “Fine then, grandpa! Take your time.”

The others cracked up as it was Zico’s turn to scowl. When he reached the group, he lifted his hand and slid his finger down her nose. “Nappeun cheonsa.

Soyoung just smiled innocently. “So, what are we doing today?”

Before anyone could answer, Kyung’s phone ring, causing Soyoung  to let go of his arm as he took it out and glanced at the caller ID. She noticed the smile on Kyung’s face fade as he looked up. “I’m gonna go take this call.”

The others nodded while Kyung walked away from the group. Soyoung couldn’t help but wonder who it was that called him.

To brighten up the mood, Zico led Soyoung  to a nearby table that had grocery bags on it.

“What is this?” she asked him, looking at the bags as she sat across Zico. The others followed, seating themselves beside Zico and Soyoung.

“It’s food!” Taeil shouted besides her as he grabbed a bag of chips from the bag. “Ah, my favorite.” He grinned happily, opening the bag in the process.

“Aish, you punk,” Jaehyo, one who she knew his name for sure, rolled his eyes. “You could’ve wait for Kyung.”

At the mention of Kyung, Soyoung turned her head to see how Kyung was doing. He looked depressed, even though his back was turned towards the others, she could tell. She’s never really seen Kyung … sad before. He’s always so optimistic and sarcastic and funny and well, everything else besides sad. Soyoung’s eyes widen as she saw Kyung froze in spot. The way Kyung suddenly stopped his small feet movements scared Soyoung.

“G-guys,” Soyoung spoke quietly, getting up slowly but never taking her eyes off of Kyung. “Uhm, I’m gonna go see how Kyung is doing.”

No one said a thing as she ran over to Kyung. Soyoung brought her hand up and tapped Kyung’s shoulder. He took no reaction to it as she walked to his front to face him. She grew worried by the second seeing how pale Kyung’s face was.

“Kyung?” she whispered his name. He blinked, tears b his eyes. “What’s wrong?”

Not bothering to answer her question or even respond to the others, Kyung ran towards his motorcycle, brushing passed Soyoung.

“Kyung!” “Hyung! “Park Kyung!” The others shouted after their friend, seeing the scene.

“Oppa!” she shouted, running after him.

Before Soyoung could reach Kyung, his motorcycle sped off, leaving his friends in complete shock.

Zico ran towards Soyoung as the others ran towards their own cars, leaving the food on the table.

“Come on!” Zico grabbed her hand and dragged Soyoung after him to his car. Once in, he didn’t bother to check if she had her seat belt on. Zico started the car and followed the others right away.

She could hear Zico’s calm, yet hard breathing. “You okay?” he asked, taking Soyoung by surprise.

Honestly, no. She’s not okay. Soyoung isn’t okay at all. Kyung’s actions had frightened her, not because they were scary or that it totally shocked her, which it did, but that’s not the point. She was frightened for Kyung, not of Kyung. She didn’t know what kind of phone call he had gotten, but it sure did show her a whole different side of Kyung that she hadn’t seen before.

When Zico got no answer from Soyoung herself, he grabbed her left hand with his right, keeping a firm hold on the steering wheel with his free hand. He held on tight to her hand, not letting go as he softly ran his thumb back and forth on her skin.

“Don’t worry,” he cracked a mini smile when Soyoung looked over at him. “You know Kyung’s strong.”

She looked down. No matter how much times he tells her not to worry, she couldn’t help but do so. “Why is he like that? Do you know?”

She had hoped that he would say yes and explain why Kyung was like that, but much to her disappointment, Zico shook his head. “I wish I knew though. But, either ways, don’t be too concerned about Kyung. Things will be taken care of.”

Soyoung sighed, looking out at the surrounding. It was then that something hit her. “Isn’t this the road that heads to Pyeongsang Hospital?”

Zico’s brows furrowed, “It is. Is Kyung heading to the hospital?”

Instead of Zico tightening the hold, it was Soyoung that held on tighter to Zico’s hand, hoping that everything was going to be okay.

Today was supposed to be a fun day. It was supposed to be a day full of fun, with the sun. It went down the hill, but the sincere caring feelings for Kyung will always be on top. Soyoung knew that and she would be there for Kyung no matter how many times he made fun of her in the past. This is Kyung. This is one of the boys that helped her almost throughout her whole life and she will never forget that.

It felt weird to be in the hospital once again, but that wasn’t the first thing that came into Kyung’s mind when he darted through the doors, entering the hospital.

“Noona!” Kyung shouted as he ran towards the emergency doors where a woman with broad shoulders wearing rather tight dress that showed her S-line stood. At the familiar voice that shouted, she turned her head and walked towards Kyung who was stopped by the woman from going any further. Her height wasn’t as tall as Kyung, but it was almost there. She could’ve pass as a model if she wanted to. She had everything a model would need.

“Calm down,” she held his arms. Her facial expression showed worried, but she remained calm, unlike Kyung, who was panicking.

“How is she, noona?” Kyung asked frantically. The tears that were dying to drip remained in place. “Mom. How is mom? Tell me she’s okay.”

The older woman looked down as she sighed, forcing on a petite smile, ruffling Kyung’s hair. “I don’t know myself, Kyung… They haven’t said anything to me yet, but don’t worry. I’m sure she’ll be okay.”

Defeated, Kyung’s gaze fell down to his feet. He felt dead. He felt like he was suffocating in an unfair world. Why does it have to be this way? It wasn’t fair at all.

“Oh, there! Kyung!” Without looking up, Kyung knew who they were that was running towards Kyung and his older sister. They slowed when they saw who was in front of Kyung.

Jaehyo’s eyes widened, “Songhye…”

The others were as shocked as he was as they came to a halt behind Kyung. The woman gave them a weak smile before waving at them. “Hi, guys. Long time no see.”

“When did you --“

“Kyung!” All gazes turned towards Soyoung and Zico as they ran towards Kyung. Like the others, Soyoung was fazed upon seeing the woman. As for Zico, he ran right up to Kyung, not caring who was in front of Kyung. “Kyung, you alright?”

Kyung nodded slowly, not even wanting to look up.

Zico glanced over and Songhye, giving her a slight glare, though no one saw besides Songhye herself. She scoffed inwardly, rolling her eyes to look elsewhere.

“Unnie, is that you?” Soyoung asked quietly.

Songhye smiled and nodded. “Our Soyoung has grown a bit, huh?”

Soyoung broke into a small smile.

This is Songhye. Park Songhye, who is the older sister of Park Kyung, older than him by 3 years. The Park Songhye who is known to be Woo Jiho’s ex-girlfriend. This is Park Songhye, the older sister of Kyung who left for the states since 3 years ago. The sister of Kyung that had just returned to Seoul, South Korea.

“How are you all?” Songhye spoke to the boys in the back. They looked away awkwardly.

“You think you’re in the right state to ask that right now?” Zico rolled his eyes, turning to Kyung. “Park Kyung, are you okay?”

Kyung looked up slowly. “Jiho-a …. My mom…”

Soyoung could see Zico tense up as he gulped. “Your mom…?”

Kyung nodded in defeat, stumbling back to the chairs.

“Kyung,” Soyoung worriedly ran to his side, passing by Songhye. She made Kyung sit in the chair. “Sit here and wait for the results. Your mom is going to be okay. You have to believe that.”

Zico gave her a quizzical look. Just minutes ago, Soyoung was afraid, panicking of what was happening to Kyung. Now, it seemed as if she’s been in charge the whole time as she calmed Kyung down. She didn’t look afraid, but he knew that she was. Zico knew that deep down, Soyoung was afraid to what may happen to Mrs. Park, Kyung’ mother, who was currently in the hospital.

They all knew about Mrs. Park’s health condition. It wasn’t the worst, yet, it wasn’t the best either.

Mrs. Park, Kyung and Songhye’s mom, has been known to have lung cancer for some months now. It was hard to believe that she could survive it this long, but then again, they were told that it wasn’t something big to worry about. They said it would go away…

That was when they, the hospital, didn’t know that it was lung cancer. They had thought that it was just some sort of sickness that would go away if she rested, but no. Just months ago, when they had called her in for a check-up, she was told to have lung cancer and that was when Kyung’s life went downhill. He didn’t smile as much anymore, at least not as much as he used to, and he didn’t hang out with Zico or Soyoung much anymore.

Soyoung knew about this since the day Zico told her, the same day that Kyung told him. It was only right for Soyoung to know because Mrs. Park is also important to her as much as Zico and Kyung is. Mrs. Park was like a second mom to both Zico and Soyoung so knowing that she had lung cancer also troubled the two very much.

Soyoung sat next to Kyung, holding his hand, hoping to give him so hope. He needed it and Soyoung knew that.

Songhye witnessed this and scoffed, “Don’t tell me, my little brother is still a weakling?”

They’ve got to be honest, none of Block B liked Songhye much. Even Kyung himself didn’t like his older sister. There were times when he felt bad for himself for even having a sister like her. Soyoung, on the other hand, didn’t really mind her… At least until she says things that doesn’t need to be said or things that insulted her own brother.

“Songhye unnie, don’t say that,” Soyoung’s voice was full of plead. How could Songhye say that when her own brother was about to break down on the spot.

“Soyoung-a, you’re younger than him and he’s still needing you to take care of him. I think I have every right to say that,” Songhye rolled her eyes. “Kid, you’ve got to stop defending Kyung. If he’s strong, then he’ll show it, but if you’re always defending him like that, he will never become strong.”

“He’s stronger than you think,” Soyoung muttered.

“Shut your little trap,” Zico snapped. “You come back to say that stuff? If that’s it then you can go back to the U.S and never come back again. Your mom is on the verge of life or death and here you are talking about how weak Kyung may be.”

“I am right though, am I not?” Songhye was tired of this.

“You’re not. You’re the one who ran away. If you’re saying Kyung is weak, you’re just as weak,” Zico sighed. “Why do you come back if this is how you’re gonna be?”

“Do I not have the right to come back?” Songhye snapped back. “My family is here. I have every right to come back if I want to --“

“Your mom is on the verge of dying because of her lung cancer condition and you’re here talking about how weak your little brother is! Are you even human anymore?!” Zico shouted at her, causing eyes to look over at them.

Songhye was speechless. The only one speechless, as she never knew that her mom had lung cancer. “W-what did you say? My mom has lung cancer?”

“You don’t even know,” Zico’s voice was soft now. “And here you are calling your family a family.”

Zico walked away as he brushed pass her and the Block B members. Soyoung wanted to get up and go after him, but she knew Kyung needed her and she would stay here with him until he doesn’t need her anymore.

Songhye looked to the members, shocked. “You all knew about this?”

They all looked away.

“Sorry,” U-kwon spoke quietly.

Songhye turned to Soyoung and Kyung.

“Kyung,” Songhye whispered. “Why didn’t you tell me about it?”

Soyoung could feel Kyung shake.

“You wouldn’t have done anything,” Kyung whispered, having his older sister in shock. Was she hearing correctly or were her ears having problems. “Even if I did tell you, you wouldn’t have done anything about it, like how you have been for the past few years that you’ve been gone. You wouldn’t be able to do anything about it, those same words would’ve been used all over again.”

Furious at his words, Songhye clenched her fist. “You think I wouldn’t have done anything about it? Are you crazy?! I would have done everything about it!”

Kyung got up, shrugging you off of him. He faced him his sister, towering over her. “You would have done NOTHING about it,” Kyung hissed. “You said you will, but you would never take action. That’s how you always are. You are nothing to me and mom. You have been nothing since the day you left. You’ve always been a spoiled brat that tried to get everything your way!”

Songhye, out of madness, brought her hand up to smack Kyung’s face but before she could, Soyoung, who had read her actions, quickly brought herself up a stood in front of Kyung.

-SMACK-!

Everything was silent as Songhye gasped in shock. “K-Kim Soyoung-a…” Songhye felt bad. She felt bad for hitting the wrong person. She felt bad for even bringing her hand up aiming for her own brother.

Soyoung’s face was red as her right cheek imprinted a show of the outline of a palm. She slowly brought her head up. “Unnie, don’t hit Kyung,” she begged.

Kyung was as surprised as everyone there was. Angered, Kyung took Soyoung’s hand. He looked right into the eyes of her sister and hissed, “Having a sister like you has always been a disgrace to my life.” And dragged Soyoung out of the scene.
