Chapter 21

Let's talk about love

"Soo Ri, remember what your late wife has always wanted to do in Korea?" Uncle Ken asked my dad as I just looked at them curiously.

"She wanted to buy over the orphanage that she grew up in and renovate it to be a better place for the children there. Wait a minute.. Was that a call from our agent? Did we manage to get the ownership?" I could see Appa eyes glowing as Uncle Ken nodded his head.

Suddenly, the two grown-up men were hugging each other tightly and my dad even had tears in his eyes. I was like a lost kid who was watching a documentary show that I didn't understand at all. My dad turned and looked at me before he smiled warmly like he always does. Appa then started to explain things to me. I've already knew about the reason to why Omma wanted to come back to Korea and that was to be a volunteer in the orphanage where she grew up in. Appa said that Omma was really close to the owner of the orphanage but when I was 10yrs old, the owner passed away, handing the orphanage to his son. But the son was not interested to look after the orphanage as the condition there soon deteriorated. At the same time, Uncle Ken had just returned to Korea with his family. That was when Omma and Uncle Ken decided to buy over the orphanage. The son wanted to sell it for a huge amount of money which was 5 times the original price. My mum rejected it even though my dad could actually afford it. Omma said that it's a waste of money to give to the greedy son when we could actually used the money for the kids. So Omma continued to volunteer there, hoping that one day there was hope for her to fulfil her wish to own the orphanage.

"Ever since your Omma passed away and I came back here, I didn't really think much about the orphanage until I met your Uncle Ken. I wasn't even aware that he was back in the States. He was looking for a job for a year before I met him so I decided to lend him some money to set up his boxing studio. Within 2yrs, he was able to pay me back the loan."

"After I was done with that loan, I talked to your dad about the orphanage again. At first he was reluctant to get involve but when he realised that it has been your Omma's lifetime wish, he agreed. So since last year, we had engaged an agent to monitor the orphanage. The call earlier was to inform us that the son had agreed to our lowered price since he was really in need of money. Seems like he was gambler and had some debts to settle." Uncle Ken said

"Wooooww... Daebak. But where do I come in then, Uncle Ken? You said that there's a way for me to get the money." I asked.

"Well, since you're an interior design student and future graduate, I was thinking of assigning you to help with the renovation and oversee the process there. Of course we'll pay you for your service." Uncle Ken said. When he saw that Appa was about to say something against the idea, he continued. "Unless your Appa wants to go to Korea to handle it himself."

I saw Appa suddenly closing his opened mouth and slumped to his seat before giving a long sigh. I understand that Appa was still not ready to return to Korea. "Uncle Ken, are you really sure about letting me handle all this? Jinjja?"

"Jae, even though I'm trying to help you out, I expect a professional service from you. You have to hand me a draft of your designs and ideas for the orphanage in 2 weeks time. If your Appa and me agree to the designs and idea, rest assure that you'll receive the 500 million won. If we both don't like it, sorry but we'll employ other people to do the job. Do you agree to my idea, Soo Ri?"

"Making her work for that money is a good way, Hyung since it'll be her hard-earned money. Furthermore,it'll give her a sense of responsibility and determination to do well. Let's see how strong your love is for this girl that you have to work hard to make sure we like your drafts." Appa smirked at me as I just rolled my eyes at him.

********************************

Initially, I had planned to fly back tonight so that I could attend the celebration tomorrow in school. But after careful thoughts, I decided to stay longer to concentrate on the project that Uncle Ken and Appa had given me. Furthermore, Appa didn't allow me to return with my head injury. Alone at home, I will be able to concentrate fully on my designs and drafts. I asked Appa help to get me the details of the buildings and also the details of the children there so that it can assist me with my drafts.

After showering, I decided to call Taeyeon to inform her about my plan. I didn't want the girls to worry so much since I left without telling them directly. I took my phone and dialed Taeyeon's number.

Jae: Annyeo...

Taeyeon: Yah!! Park Hyun Jae!!

Jae: Wow, Taeng. Is that how you answer a call? I didn't even finish my greetings yet.

Taeyeon: I only do that since you left without telling us. What's with the urgency?

Jae: Mianhae. I needed to do something that's why I left in a hurry.

Taeyeon: Care to explain?

I explain to Taeyeon about the reason for me flying back to the States and also about whatever happened earlier and after 10mins, I heard Taeyeon sighing.

Taeyeon: So you planned to stay there until you finished the drafts? Which means you won't be attending the event tomorrow?

Jae: I hope to finish it soon and that it'll be accepted by Appa and Uncle Ken. For tomorrow's event, I would have to give it a miss.

Taeyeon: Okay. I understand. Too bad for Jessica then because she asked if you'll be attending and seems to look upset when we told her that we are not sure about it. She's also worried about your injury.

Jae: Sica's upset? How did she know I was not around?

Taeyeon: Tiffany, Sunny and Jessica came up to have breakfast with us earlier. After she found out that you left for the States, I noticed that she looked sad. She didn't even finished her breakfast.

Jae: Aissshh.. Otteoke? I didn't mean to make her upset.

Taeyeon: Don't worry. You're doing all this to help her. While you are there, I'll help you to look after her. Along with the other girls.

Jae: But Taeng, help to keep this a secret from Jessica, Tiffany and Sunny. It's okay to share with Yuri and Sooyoung since they already know about my family status. At the same time, tell Jessica not to worry about my injury.

Taeyeon: Okay. No worries about that. But please try to come back early. It's no fun here without you. Especially now summer break already started.

Jae: I'll try my best, Taeng. Anyway, how's your ankle? Still swollen?

Taeyeon: It's not as bad as yesterday. Should be okay in about 2-3 days time.

Jae: That's good. So enjoy the event tomorrow and helped me to apologise to the girls for my absence. Get some rest then.

Taeyeon: Good night, Jae. Take care of yourself there and send my regard to your Appa.

********************************

Jessica's POV:

I should have just stayed in the dorm. Everyone was busy spending time with their girlfriends that I felt so lonely right now. Taecyeon didn't attend the event. Maybe he felt ashamed for losing in the semi-finals or maybe he just didn't like the idea of mingling with the other students. As quoted by him, students that are not of his status. If only Jae was here. Aisshhh... That stupid Jae. What's so important that she had to fly back to the States and even didn't attend the event. I wonder how she could travel with a bandaged head. That must have looked funny. When Taeyeon came earlier, she apologised on Jae's behalf for not attending and also informed that Jae send her regards, telling us not to worry about her injury. She said that Jae gave her a call to inform her all that. Hhhhmmm.. Why didn't Jae text or call me too? Forget it. I think I'll just sit down and finish up my drink.

Taeyeon's POV:

I saw Jessica sitting down at one of the bench, drinking her juice and looking very bored. Poor thing. If Jae saw her like that, I bet she'll rush here to accompany her but Jae is trying her best to help Jessica out so hopefully everything will be fine soon. I had informed Yuri and Sooyoung about my conversation with Jae last night and they had agreed to keep it a secret. They promised to help me to look after Jessica too but I think right now, they are too busy with their own girlfriends. I was about to walk towards Jessica when I heard someone called out Tiffany's name.

"Tiffany!!"

"Daddy? Oh my god! You came." Tiffany ran to the elderly man and gave him a tight hug.

Taeyeon who was with Tiffany earlier, just stood rooted to her spot until she heard Tiffany calling her name. She walked slowly to Tiffany since her ankle was not fully recovered and was introduced to her dad.

"Daddy, this is Taeyeon. The one that I've been telling you."

"Annyeonghaseyo, Mr Hwang. Kim Taeyeon imnida." Taeyeon bowed slightly towards the man and smiled sincerely.

Before Mr Hwang could reply to Taeyeon, a familiar guy came to approach them, causing Taeyeon to stop smiling.

"Uncle Hwang? Glad you came. I see that you've found your beautiful daughter." Choi Siwon was smiling brightly as both Tiffany and Taeyeon looked at each other.

"Ahhh, Siwon. I didn't know you'll be here. Are you part of the futsal team also?" Mr Hwang asked.

"Daddy, how did you know Siwon? Judging from the way he called you, looks like he had known you for sometime. " Tiffany asked before Siwon could reply to Mr Hwang.

"Let me explain myself then. I'm actually part of the organising committee for the event today, Uncle Hwang. For Tiffany's question, I actually knew your dad a few months back. I met him while I was accompanying my dad to one of his business functions." Siwon smiled at Tiffany.

"Yes, yes. This fine man was so good at entertaining me and the rest of the guests. His dad must be very proud of him. Handsome, well-mannered and even good in his studies. Any parents would want him to date their daughter." Mr Hwang said as he laughed out loud.

Taeyeon was starting to feel awkward standing there and hearing how Mr Hwang kept praising Siwon. She excused herself, saying that she needed to go to the Ladies as she tried to hold back her tears.

Jessica saw the whole incident and when Taeyeon walked alone towards the Ladies, she decided to inform Yuri who was nearby since Yuri was closer to Taeng than herself and would be a better choice to check on Taeyeon.

"Yul, sorry to disturb you but I think Taeng need some help." Jessica told Yuri as she explained what she saw. Yuri turned around to look at Tiffany's direction and saw her talking to an elderly man with Siwon by their side.

"Thanks for the info, Sica. Yoon, stay here with Sica, okay. I go and check up on Taeng for a while."

"No worries, Yul. Just go ahead. I'll be fine here with Sica around."

*******************************

The Ladies was empty except for one closed cubicle. Even though the sound was very faint, Yuri could hear the familiar sobbing coming from the cubicle.

"Taeng? Are you okay?"

"Yul? How.. how come.. you're.. here?" Taeyeon replied in between her sobs.

"Jessica saw you earlier and informed me about it. What happened, Taeng? Is it becauseof Siwon? I saw him talking to Tiffany and her dad."

"It's okay, Yul. I'm fine. I'm just having a running nose." Taeyeon tried to lie to Yuri.

"Don't lie to me Taeng. You better tell me what's wrong unless you want me to call Jae which I don't think is a good idea since she might just decide to fly back here immediately. You should know how worried Jae will be if she knows about it."

The door opened and Taeyeon emerged from behind it with a slightly red eyes. Taeyeon tried to smile like as if nothing is wrong but Yuri folded her arms and glared at her causing Taeyeon to look down.

"Yul, do you think I'm compatible with Tiffany? How can I even compete with Siwon? He's handsome, intelligent and even rich. Tiffany's dad was praising him non-stop just now. He even said that any parents would want Siwon to date their daughter and her dad didn't even acknowledged me earlier." Taeyeon started to tell Yuri what happened earlier.

"Taeng, you're overreacting. Maybe Fany's dad was just saying it in general but that doesn't mean he's talking about Fany and I think he didn't manage to acknowledged you because Siwon intercepted him. Furthermore, Fany already chosen you over Siwon. You should have more confidence in yourself, Taeng. Come on, let's forget about it. The girls are waiting for us."

Taeyeon washed her face and followed Yuri back to the sports hall. They heard Ms Lee calling them to gather at the side where the rest of the girls were waiting for them. Yuri noticed that Jessica was talking to a guy at a corner of the hall and tapped Taeyeon's shoulder.

"Taeng, do you recognize the guy that Jessica is talking to?"

Taeyeon squirted her eyes at the direction that Yuri was looking. "Looks like Lee Donghae. He's a classmate of me and Soo."

Both of them joined the rest of the girls as they took commerative photos of the team with their trophies.

********************************

"But Taetae, it's my birthday party. What do you mean you can't attend?" Tiffany was trying her best to control her loud voice.

Both her and Taeyeon was standing outside of Tiffany's dorm. The journey back from the earlier event was filled with Tiffany's excitement about her dad coming to visit her earlier and how her dad invited almost everyone to her birthday party next Saturday which includes Siwon. Taeyeon had replied to Tiffany that she can't attend just when Tiffany was about to enter her dorm, causing Tiffany to be shocked.

"I've got something to do on that day. Anyway, my absence won't make a difference to you since your dad invited almost everyone to the party."

"Are you angry with my dad for inviting everyone? He's just trying to make the party more lively with more guests. I can't believe you said that your absence makes no difference to me. How can you say that about me? Do you even understand how I feel?" With that, Tiffany slammed the door at Taeyeon's face.

Taeyeon walked back to her dorm feeling very down and dejected. She even ignored Sooyoung and Yuri who were sitting in the living room and went straight to her room. 15mins later, Taeyeon walked out with a big bag.

"Soo, Yul. I'm going back home. Well, actually it's Jae's home. I don't even have a home. If Fany asked about me, please tell her that I'm uncontactable at the moment." She walked away with a slight wobble due to her injured ankle.

Before Sooyoung and Yuri could react to anything, Taeyeon left the dorm. The two of them looked at each other with a confused expression before Yuri asked Sooyoung to call Sunny to see if there's any news from her side. Yuri felt that something had happened between Taeyeon and Tiffany. After talking to Sunny, Sooyoung explained to Yuri about whatever that Tiffany had said to Sunny.

"Aisshhh.. That shorty. She must have felt inferior thinking that Siwon would be there. Seeing how she even commented about not having a home, she must be feeling really down right now." Seeing Sooyoung frowning, Yuri started to explain about what happened earlier during the event when Taeyeon cried in the Ladies.

"But Tiffany doesn't know this. Instead she thought that Taeng didn't want to celebrate her birthday and even treated her like she's not important by saying that she's got something to do on that day. That's what Tiffany said to Sunny." Sooyoung said

"Taeng must have said that to cover up her real intention of not attending. If only Jae was here, she would be able to think of something." Yuri frowned as she tried to figure out what to do.

"Let's give Taeng sometime to be alone and sort out her thoughts. If she's not back here in 2 days time, we'll go to her house to find her and then inform Jae." Sooyoung suggested as Yuri nodded her head.

********************************

Tiffany's POV:

What is wrong with Taetae? How could she not attend my birthday party? To think that I was excited to be able to celebrate it for the first time with her. How could she say that it doesn't matter to me if she attended or not? Something to do on that day? What else is more important than me? Was she really upset that Daddy invited everyone to the party? Aisshhh.. She's the one who made me feel angry but why am I feeling guilty right now? Was I being to harsh on her earlier? She did looked upset even before we walked back to the dorm. Now that I think of it, she did looked uncomfortable ever since Siwon came up to talked to Daddy. Taetae-ah, gwenchana? Never mind. I'll go up to find her tomorrow and talked things out with her.

Yuri's POV:

I hope Taeng got home safely especially with her injury. She must be feeling very upset until she decided to go back home. If Jae had heard about her comment with regards to home, Jae would have strangled her neck. She always had this inferiority complex in her since young. Maybe growing up with Jae caused her to have it and with the addition of me in the group, I guess it makes her felt worse. But we always try our best not to make her feel inferior and will always protect her from anyone who bullies her in school. I think she was greatly affected by what Fany's dad said with regards to Siwon. That's why she became like that. Should I inform Jae about what happened? But Taeng did say that Jae will be busy with her project so that she can help Jessica out. Talking about Jessica reminded me about her chat with that Lee Donghae. Both of them seems to have gotten on a good start. Should I worry about this too? Hhhmmm.. Maybe I think too much. Let's just hope Taeng will be back soon.

Jessica's POV:

I was almost bored to death if not for Donghae who suddenly appeared when I was sitting beside Yoona. Lucky for me, he stayed around when Yoona had to go off to take photos with her teammates. I can't believe he's from the same high school as me. He was part of the committee that had organised the event. He said that he had always wanted to make friends with me but because of Taecyeon, he was not able to do so. He said that since he came from an average family, he didn't think that I'll be interested to be friends with him. Well, he seems like a nice guy to me so I said that it was okay to be friends. We chatted a lot about our high school memories but although it was nice to chat with him, I can't stop thinking about Jae. I was even comparing Jae with Donghae as we chatted along. Wonder what Jae is doing right now?

********************************

It's been two days since I was looking through the documents that Appa had given to me. At the moment, the orphanage holds around 54 children, between the age of 1yr to 18yrs old. Out of the 54 children, 4 of them are toddlers while the rest were made up of 22 girls and 28 boys. Appa also handed me the photos that showed the building of the orphanage. It's a U-shaped 2-storey building. I've been drafting some of the designs of the rooms when my phone rang. I stood up to grabbed it from the table behind and saw Yuri's name blinking on my phone's screen.

Yuri: Hey, Jae. How have you been? Are you busy right now?

Jae: I'm fine, Yul. Not that busy at the moment. What's up?

Yuri: I know you needed time to be alone for your project but I just thought that you should know about this. It concerns Taeng.

Jae: Taeng? What happened?

Yuri started to tell me about what happened on the event day and how Tiffany was really pissed off when she came up the next day to our dorm to look for Taeyeon but found out that her girlfriend had went back home without telling her anything. Taeyeon is not even answering any of their calls even from Tiffany.

Yuri: As quoted by Fany 'If she thinks that I'm not important enough for her to talk things out, fine. If she rather be alone, I don't see the point of this relationship.' Then she left our dorm, crying.

Jae: Mwo? What does Tiffany mean by that? Is she planning to break up with Taeng? Andwae.. Taeyeon loves her a lot. I'll fly back now.

Yuri: Wait, Jae. I don't think she really means it though. She must have said it at the moment of anger. Jae, you don't have to fly back. Me and Soo are on our way to your house.

Jae: My house? Here, in the States?

Yuri: Not there, you pabo. Your house here in Korea. We are going there to look for Taeng.

Jae: Mianhae. It's just because I'm here at the moment. Anyway, keep me updated. By the way, when is Tiffany's birthday party?

Yuri: Next Saturday. No worries, Jae. Me and Soo will try our best to help Taeng out. You just concentrate on your project okay. Hwaiting!!

Jae: Hwaiting to the two of you too. Hopefully, everything will be fine.

As I put down the phone after the talk with Yuri, I stretched out myself and stood up. I really wanted to fly back to Korea right now to help Taeyeon out but I also need to finish up this project as soon as possible so that I can get the money and fly back to Korea. When will Taeyeon ever get rid of her inferiority complex? Sometimes I wonder if it was my fault that she has it. Growing up with me must be a torture to her. Even though I always try my best to be as average as I can be but the fact that I was born rich couldn't be denied. I was glad that my parents are not the snobbish type and always remain humble. I keep replaying the words that Taeyeon said when she left the dorm. 'I don't even have a home.' It hurts to hear Taeyeon saying it  even though it's the truth. Ever since Appa had asked Uncle Kim to stay in the house and treat it like his own house, their family has been living there since then. I heard from Appa that he even suggested for Uncle Kim to sell off their own house so that they won't have to look after two houses. Maybe I should ask Appa to try to persuade Uncle Kim to accept the ownership of the house again.

After spending a few more hours at the drafting table, my housemaid came and informed me that Appa had returned home from the office and would like to have dinner with me. I nodded my head to her and told her that I'll be down in a short while. I stretched myself and grabbed my phone, accidentally pressing on the lock screen button. A picture of a sleeping Jessica appeared on the screen as I smiled to myself. I took the photo secretly when she was sleeping during those days that her ankle was injured. Suddenly I wondered what Jessica was doing right now. Will she be happy once her arranged marriage is off? Should I tell her about all this? Maybe I shouldn't. I don't want her to accept me because she felt indebted to me which is almost the same  as what she's going through with Taecyeon. Accept me? Does she even feel the same way as me? Arrrgghhh.. All these thoughts are driving me nuts but still a smile creeped across my face as I walked down to join Appa at the dining table.
