Foreword
“Ryeowook honey, I hope that you’re living a decent life back in Seoul~” Ryeowook’s mother, Mrs. Kim said into the phone which was the only way for the mother and son to keep in contact. The two had lived in America for most of their lives but since Ryeowook was originally born in Seoul, he had returned at 23 years old to serve in the military. Three years had passed since he’d been enlisted and now he was in Seoul actually experiencing Korea for the first time in so many years.
“Yeah mom, I am,” Ryeowook replied in perfect English.
“Okay, I’m glad,” Mrs. Kim replied, “Ry-“
“Mom, so when will I be able to come back to America?” Ryeowook interrupted.
“Well, actually…” Mrs. Kim paused, “I decided that you should stay in Korea… and grow up there.” Mrs. Kim shocked Ryeowook. Expecting what he’d say next, Mrs. Kim replied, “In the past three years that you haven’t been here, I’ve sort of lost my job and run short on money, so I need to work to get enough money for you to return.”
“Mom!!” Ryeowook whined, “But I’m all alone in Korea and I hardly know anyone!”
“I’m sorry, son… as soon as I work it off, I’ll come get you. In the meantime, you should get a job, make some acquaintances, and you know… live.” Mrs. Kim suggested.
“… Okay mom… Take care then, “ Ryeowook hung up.
