Couple: Wooya

Prompt: woohyun and hoya are so in love although they only can meet with each other in their dreams (angst )

Woohyun was  exhausted. His mind was spinning violently and he couldn’t even grasp a sense of reality. As his eyes fluttered opened, things seemed so bright and his ears were hurting to the sounds of babies crying and lots of other sounds and it made him a bit dazed, or maybe, utterly dazed. He was dumbfounded, without clues of what had happened. Where was he and why things seemed to be so strange. He tried to stand up. Surprisingly, he felt rather light and….flexible. In a jiffy, he took a look at his watch, to figure out the current time and half-heartedly hoping it was not too late to catch up with his crush. He probably stumbled onto something and passed out; at least that’s what he thought. However, things weren’t like they seemed to be. As he lifted up his right hand, he screamed “OH MY GOD!”. But, it was all useless, because the only thing that came out from his mouth was “Meow”.

Nam Woo Hyun was turned into a cute white Scottish fold cat. “Oh my god! What’s up with these paws?” Woohyun would probably have continued rambling about the strange thing that had happened to him. But, it hit him, the reality hit him hard, right on his face as he began to remember every little thing that had happened to him.

Flashback

Woohyun was happy that day, he wasn’t sure why, he just was. Just like any other days, he would stalk his crush. He did that for almost 10 years already, he was so in love with this guy. He would always give his crush presents by putting them in his locker or desk. However, his beloved crush never knew him, despite his cold and distant character. He still remembers the day when his crush moved next to his house. He was so contented at that moment but he also couldn’t help feeling sombre too. Even when the distance between them was so short, that guy would still be clueless about his existence. While walking, he put on a song. It was his favorite and he could relate to it.

“You’re just a daydream away,
I wouldn’t know what to say if I had you
And I’ll keep you a daydream away,
Just watch from a safe place,
So I never have to lose”

Woohyun walked carefully, not letting his crush disappear out of his sight. The school just ended and he fished out a hoodie and a cap from his bag, and wore them. Well, of course, as much as he wanted Hoya to look at him, he didn’t want to get caught either. The latter would think he’s a freak if he did, he thought.

He followed Hoya’s traces and reached the Han River. He stood beside Hoya, but in a distance. Hoya seemed to have many things in his mind, Woohyun thought. Hoya then turned and looked at him, he looked back. He swore his heart palpitated oh so violently and his lips curled up in an awkward smile but Hoya just stared. Then he saw Hoya picking up his phone. In a blink of an eye, Hoya ran. Instinctively, Woohyun also ran across the street, he was afraid that something bad would happen to Hoya. However, much to his bad, he saw a car approaching towards him. It was as if the time had frozen for a moment, everything seemed so slow in movement. Woohyun couldn’t move, he was standing there, on the street. But damn, he still turned around and looked at Hoya who was slowly drifting away, a point further. Woohyun’s feet won’t move, only his heart was chasing after Hoya and followed him. Hoya never turned around though, even with the loud sound of screeching tires, crowds gasping and loud continuous pressed honks. Woohyun decided on that day, on that moment; it’s not something bad would happen to Hoya, but it was the worst thing ever happened to him. The world around him, the approaching car, the sound of babies crying, everything turned pitch black.

Woohyun tried to gather everything in his mind together and made up a conclusion. ‘So I was crashed by a car and my soul now got into a cat’s body? That sounds… amazing!’ But then again, his stomach began to growl. ‘Oh . Now how am I supposed to eat?’ Somehow, somewhat, he felt so sad when he thought of his crush, Hoya. What if… What if he would never again got into his body back and  he won’t ever see Hoya anymore, what if he is actually dead?. Those ‘what ifs’ made Woohyun scared even more. Lee Howon wasn’t just a star to him, he was Woohyun’s whole damn sky.  Woohyun knew how tough Hoya’s life was; how he got abused by his step father, how he was then sent to the orphanage, how Hoya was adopted by a rich gentleman and how he moved next to Woohyun’s house. Of course he knew, he is Hoya’s secret admirer, stalker or to make it sound better, Hoya’s guardian angel.

He wanted to always be there for Hoya, forever. But, the latter never noticed him, he didn’t even know his name. The second person he thought of at that moment was his best friend, Dongwoo. He walked out from that dark alley and looked for Dongwoo. But, Dongwoo was nowhere to be found. Then, he remembered something ‘magical’ that Dongwoo used to tell him.

“You know Woohyun, we dream so that we won’t have to be apart for that long…” It was when he met Dongwoo after a long holiday and that he dreamed of Woohyun .’That’s it… Dream!’ Woohyun headed to Hoya’s house. If his soul can be in a cat’s body, then maybe, just maybe…his soul can travel when he’s asleep. And just like that, he slept somewhere near Hoya’s house and it was something magical that never happened to Woohyun.

On that day, Hoya decided to go to the Han River after the school ended. It was his favorite place where he can find peace and calmness. Hoya sauntered across the street nonchalantly and stood by the river, admiring the picturesque view. While at that, he seemed he couldn’t forget the dream he had a few days ago. Unlike any other dreams, this one seemed to mean something. It’s like there’s a hidden message behind it. There might be something and Hoya was dying to know it. He observed his surroundings; there were some couples, foreigners and families. He looked at his right side, there was a guy standing about in a halt of 5 meters from him. That guy was wearing a red hoodie and a cap inside it. Hoya couldn’t see his face coherently despite his poor eye sight. The guy turned a looked at him; somehow Hoya’s heart skipped one or two beats. He didn’t know why. The guy had dimples. Hoya shook his head and rubbed his eyes with his right hand. He was probably seeing things. Suddenly, he got a phone call from his father’s worker. In a jiffy, he ran across the street right after acknowledge about his father been admitted to the hospital. He heard some noises, but he shrugged it off. His father is more important.

It turned out that Hoya’s father was diagnosed with a vascular disease. He got a heart attacked that evening, but it wasn’t severe. That night Hoya realized that his neighbor’s room was dark, unlike any other days, which were ablaze with bright light. Hoya shrugged off his thoughts and went to sleep.

The brown leaves floated down and curled up lifelessly on the ground. The sky was overcast, threatening rain. It took mere seconds for Hoya to recognize that place; it was a graveyard. He stood on a road which led to the exit of the graveyard. It began to rain, and he felt a firm grasp wrapping around his hand. He looked up, only managed to see that person’s smile. He remembered that smile and he was unconsciously glad to see that again. The person’s eyes were covered by the black umbrella he held and he was wearing a black suit, just like Hoya did. They began to walk side by side, Hoya’s hand still in the guy’s grip. Ironically,  even though Hoya tried so hard to look at his face, he couldn’t. “Hoya…”  , that person spoke. His voice was low, like a faraway thunder. Suddenly, their tracks stopped. The black heavy clouds were gone, only to be replaced with the beautiful beating sunlight. Hoya looked around. The graveyard was turned into a garden, with colorful flowers everywhere. Hoya turned to that person as the latter put down the umbrella and smiled the most mesmerizing smile, Hoya hurt inside. The person’s smile suddenly left as Hoya studied his face. He was really good looking. “Hoya….I..I don’t want to end up here. I don’t want to leave you. I need you, I really do. I don’t know how to put this, but I.. I love you. I’m afraid there would be not enough time for me to say this… But I am so madly in love with you and do remember that I will always love you, even if I’m not there..”, came the guy’s voice, strong and loud, almost defiant yet a bit shaky. His eyes were teary, he as if he would cry any time soon. Hoya’s heart was beating so loud that he got dizzy. He felt so warm inside yet so sad.

“W-who are you?”, Hoya managed to ask.

The grips of their hands were getting sweaty but none of them would deny that it was comfortable and both hoped to stay like that, forever. However, much to Hoya’s disappoint, that person let go of his hand. The guy’s hands rested gently on Hoya’s shoulders, his eyes fixed onto Hoya’s and smiled genuinely. He had dimples, Hoya noticed. “It took years for me to finally do this.. Lee Howon, once again, and probably for the last time, I love you. You are my first and last love and will always stay that way”, the guy breathed out. Hoya didn’t know how to react, but at the same time, he couldn’t deny that he felt so loved and perhaps, perhaps he was so in love with that person too. He felt so warm inside and his heart couldn’t stop palpitating, it felt so real, so real.

The guy looked up again and smiled sadly, “My name is-“

‘beep beep….’ . Hoya woke up. The image of the guy mouthing his name was almost incoherent. ‘Wooyoung? Sooyong? Wooyeol? Sooyeol?’ he thought, getting puzzled already. He felt sad all of sudden.

That day, Hoya listed all the names he thought would fit with the person in his dream mouthed. He asked for Sungjong’s help to look for people with those names. There were some people he met, but none of them match the guy in his dream. Then, he asked Sungjong for help again. He tried to mouth it the way the guy mouthed his name.
“Wooyoung?” the younger asked.
“No, that one I already met,”
“Umm… Wooya?” the younger blinked.
“Nobody got that name in our school , Sungjong. And what kind of name is that? It sounds weird.”
“Oh..okay. Let me try again.”
Hoya mouthed it over and over until…
“Woo…Hyun?” Sungjong looked at him, his eyes were gleamed with amusement. “Nam Woo Hyun!!!” he said, almost excitedly. “Yeah… Nam Woohyun. We haven’t meet him again.”, the younger added. “Nam Woo Hyun? Who’s that?” Hoya asked. “Hyung don’t know him? He’s pretty popular among the girls.”
“Well, I’m not a girl, why should I know him anyway?”
“Geez hyung! Let’s look for him!” , Sungjong said and dragged Hoya along. But, much to their disappointment, they couldn’t find Nam Woo Hyun. So, they decided to ask the gossipers in their class. “Oh? That cute Woohyun oppa??” One of the girls voiced out and started to sob. “I heard he got into an accident yesterday”, she said. “Really? Oh… that’s bad.”, Sungjong said. Hoya was all hushed up. His mind was busy processing every detail that happened. Then it hit him, almost immediately. He ran all his might and reached his house. He didn’t care of getting punished for skipping class that day, he really didn’t. He went to an unused room upstairs in his house and looked for something in some abandoned boxes. Papers and some useless things were everywhere on the floor. “Found it!!!”, Hoya shouted amusedly. He took a purple colored box in an enormous box. On top of the purple box, there were words written on it. ‘To : Lee Howon , Sincerely from Nam Woo Hyun. I know you won’t open this box but I’ll give it anyway ^-^v”

He remembered he found that box in his desk so he brought it home. He too, remembered the name written on the box but he was not interested to find out what was the content of the box at all. He put the box somewhere and it was abandoned just like that. For the first time in so many days, he did open the box. His eyes widened. There was a book, some of his photos and the drawings of him. He was utter awed. The drawings were almost perfect, almost looked like him. He flipped the pages of the book, it was like a journal. Instinctively, Hoya smiled widely. That journal was riddled with things about him, every little thing that he did and some photos of him too. It was like a short storybook and Hoya liked it very much. His hand stopped at the entry of 8th February.

“Hello Hoya! ^_^
Today is a great weather and guess what? It’s my birthday! I know that it means nothing to you but…uh I don’t care haha. I was really expecting for some presents from people today. I got a lot actually, from all the fangirls. But, they were nothing compare to a simple wish from you. But, you don’t know me and you won’t wish a happy birthday for me too  . But oh! Today, I felt so happy. Wanna know why? When I was following you today, I saw you and your father were talking. Then I saw you loaded a lorry with stuffs, as if you’re moving out. Then, I heard you father shouted an address. I was dying inside; it was next to my house! You’re going to move and become my neighbor. I was so freaking happy!”

Hoya had this habit of opening his bedroom’s curtains and windows; he just liked the fresh air of that place. He never knew that Woohyun lived next to his house, because being a social awkward lad like him,  it’s pretty hard for him to make friends. So, he just ignores insignificant things and does what he has to do.

Woohyun had some hard time being in the cat’s body. He found out that he was actually in a comatose state and had a 50/50 chance of living. He was so upset, he really wanted to live. When he entered Hoya’s dreams, he really wished he could stay there and be with Hoya. At least, he had the courage to confess his undying love for the latter.
The next thing Hoya would do was of course, look for Woohyun. It felt so strange, Hoya thought. He didn’t even know why he actually cared about a guy who he never met. Or maybe he did, if those dreams count. Hoya thought that, it was probably a right thing to do. But then, if he did found Woohyun somewhere and Woohyun really did have an accident, what would Hoya do after that? What’s the main purpose of searching for the Nam Woo Hyun guy anyway? Hoya sighed, as he sauntered, heading to Woohyun’s house. Hoya didn’t know, really didn’t know. He stood in front of the baby blue painted house’s door and rang the bell. After a mere seconds, a middle-aged woman emerged and opened the door.

“Hi? May I help you?” the woman asked. She was probably Woohyun’s mother.
“Can I see Nam Woo Hyun? Is he here?” Hoya felt shivered down his spine as he uttered that guy’s name.
“I’m sorry, but I guess you don’t know what had happened to him. By the way, I’m his mom, let’s talk inside will we?” she smiled sincerely though there was a hint of sadness in her eyes. Hoya entered the house and plopped down the couch. While waiting for Mrs.Nam to prepare something he scanned around the living room. There were some pictures of Woohyun. He was really good looking. Then he saw a photo; a younger Woohyun. His eyes widen. He knew that kid. He remembered that kid from his past. While waiting, he suddenly got very sleepy. He instinctively fell asleep.

There were many children there and the sun shone so bright, those children’s skins were clung with beads of perspiration; it must be summer, Hoya thought. He could feel that he was sitting on a bench or so and it was close enough to witness everything that happened before him. There were boys playing soccer, they looked like they’re around 10 years old and the oldest would probably be 12 years old. Then, he spotted a kid; his bangs almost covered his eyes but his hair was styled to the side, so it wouldn’t be a problem. Hoya examined that kid; it was him, the younger him. He didn’t know how he knew that kid was him, he just did, he felt it. The kid or the younger Hoya was playing but at a moment, he stopped his tracks from running after the ball. His head looked up, straight to a figure beside where Hoya was sitting. Of course, Hoya did thought the kid looked at him at first until he looked at his side. There’s a boy, a really cute one and he got these dimples whenever he smiled. At that moment, the child Hoya just stood there, staring. Out of the blue, when Hoya blinked his eyes, it was as if Hoya’s soul got into ‘the child Hoya’. He could felt himself looking at the boy on the bench. Their eyes met, and somehow, somewhat, Hoya felt a sense of longing inside his heart. That boy smiled and Hoya thought it was so mesmerizing, like a rainbow after the rain stopped. It was so cute, with those dimples and all. In seconds, everything began to fade.

Hoya woke up, with the same feeling: yearning stuck somewhere in the chambers of heart. The image of the smiling little boy was still stuck in his mind and seemed like it would never  fade. He blinked. Mrs.Nam was smiling at him. “Aigoo, you must be really tired falling asleep just by sitting.” She chuckled.
Hoya sat up straight, “Uh, I’m sorry! I don’t mean to-“
“It’s okay, really. Don’t worry. It’s really good to see you here. Well, it’s more to be unexpected to actually see you here.”
Hoya’s eyes unintentionally widen. “What do you mean by that?”
“Well you see, I really thought you didn’t know my son, Woohyun.”
“Uh… Maybe I didn’t know him. We never talked before…It’s a long story.” Hoya tried to explain. But instead, crimson shades spread across his cheeks as he remembered Woohyun’s love confession towards him in his dream.
“My son really likes you since he was 10. I thought it was just a short infatuation that kids usual had. But, I don’t think so…I think he really loves you. He was different from other kids when he was a child. He had difficulties to mix up with other kids and always ended up being so alone. Well, it was a bad thing for a growing child and it caused him depression. He always locked himself in his bedroom and spent his time  drawing. His older brother tried to drag him out of the house and have fun, but he refused to. He’s pretty attached to his brother though. We decided to send him to other school and that was when he met you, I guess. He smiled more since then. Oh well, he had bunch of your photos though. And… he went out pretty often.” Mrs.Nam explained.
Hoya was a bit surprised though. He never thought that he had changed Woohyun’s life that much. He silently wished he realized this sooner so that he can make Woohyun’s life more contented. “I see… where is him anyway?”
“He fell into comatose state. He got into an accident. He only has 50/50 chance of living” Mrs.Nam eyes were teary. She tried hard not to burst into tears, but eventually broke down in Hoya’s arms.
“I’m sorry to hear that…”
“Did you remember when some police officers came to your house and arrested your step father?” Mrs.Nam carefully asked.
“Huh? H-How do you know that?” Hoya’s eyes widen.
“Woohyun can’t stand seeing you being abused. He called the police. He was also the one who always brought your favorite foods when you were in the orphanage. Well, he told me to help him make them for you.” Hoya’s heart ached. He really didn’t expect that. After some talks,

Mrs.Nam suddenly got a call, a really important one. “What??!!! I’ll be there right now!” Tears started spilling out of her eyes. Her breath was rather shaky but she managed to utter up “He is in a critical situation right now and probably couldn’t make it.” As soon Hoya heard that, he swiftly dragged Mrs.Nam and headed to the hospital.
Woohyun was still in a cat’s body and he was walking around Hoya’s house until he suddenly started to feel really dizzy, and he knew it, his time has come. With a sense of somberness, he collapsed.

Meanwhile, Hoya and Mrs.Nam reached the hospital. The doctor was there, as if he was waiting for the lifeless figure on the bed to die, Hoya hated that. Woohyun is going to live, he will. Hoya’s heart shattered to pieces as Woohyun’s lean body was in view. He stood there, all hushed up and the atmosphere wasn’t helping too, it’s too tensed. Out of the blue, Hoya’s head began to hurt so much, things around him looked as if they were spinning around. Hoya stumbled on the floor and everything was nothing but darkness.

Hoya knew it, he knew where he was; it was the place where he first met Woohyun in his dream. He was sitting on a bench, holding someone’s hand tightly, so tightly, as if the latter would disappear if he loosens his grasp. He just doesn’t want to let go, he was too afraid. Mustering up his courage, he spoke up, “Woohyun ah, don’t leave please… I-I love you and I need you” Woohyun heaved a heavy sigh. He tried hard not to cry but he just can’t. “I’m sorry…I don’t know if I could fulfill your wish. I love you too, and in fact, I love you first.” Hoya was all hushed up and it made Woohyun felt uneasy. Hoya then stood up straight, still holding Woohyun’s hand. “Let’s have a great time today, shall we? I don’t want you to be sad, and I don’t want to show my sad face to you either.” Hoya smiled genuinely and Woohyun felt like the world was getting brighter too. At that moment, both of them wore the same thought. Even if it’s just a dream, it was indeed real and even though it was the second ever time they talked to each other, they both couldn’t help but feel like they’ve known each other since forever. They had a really good time together; just like other couples did, but more special; because it was probably the first and the last. Their very last destination was the beach. The sun was painting the sky in hues of bright colors and the sea water reflected the warm colors. There was a flowery arch, a wedding arch. At that moment, they were wearing suits and they knew what it was and they won’t ever regret this. As they both spoke up consents, “I do”, they were tied with a bond that would never break, even through the bad and the ugly. They looked into each others’ eyes and smiled the most mesmerizing smile. Hoya reached up his hand on Woohyun’s cheek, he slowly leaned in and planted a soft kiss on the latter’s lips. As the time passed by, Hoya’s grip onto Woohyun’s hand loosened. It was the moment, and both of them forced a smile. For the last time, Woohyun kissed Hoya passionately as he began to fade. Bit by bit, the image of a smiling Woohyun was stuck in his mind, forever. Hoya looked at his hand, there’s no more a tight grip, no more warmth; just a pure loneliness, and emptiness that scared him. Woohyun’s voice of “Be happy and live your life. I’ll always be there by your side. You’re my time, you’re my eternity. I love you.” ,was still ringing in his ears, like a melancholy melody.

For the first time in so many years, Hoya cried and cried. The image of Woohyun came in view and he’s afraid. Those moments of Woohyun stalking him, putting presents in his desk, being like a guardian angel to him were playing in his eyes like a movie. At that very moment, Hoya let go all of his yearning, loneliness, remorse and love with tears in his sleep.
