If you were walking down the street, on a normal day of the week, you probably wouldn’t notice the two boys that were standing in front of each other near the pines in the park you just passed by.

Probably you would, in the best of cases, glance sideways and then keep your way to wherever, not bothering to care what’s going on with these boys, why one has an angry look and the other keeps his head down. In the worst case, you wouldn’t even turn your head a bit to even see them standing alone in the park.

But now that I’m telling you this, you’re curious about what’s happening, am I right? Don’t say no, I know I’m speaking truth.

And the truth is that one of the boys has just confessed to the other, who is now angry that the other ruined their friendship because he does not like him.

The one who confessed and got rejected, the one that has his head down and and watery eyes, is called Woohyun. The one with the angry look and screaming in a whisper “I’m not gay”, afraid that people walking on the street like you might hear them, is his former best-friend, Howon.

Why would a boy like another guy, is what Howon is thinking. It’s unnatural, according to his parent’s teachings, and he can’t accept that his best friend, his best friend out of all people is saying such things.

Woohyun, on the other hand, wants to run away and hide in embarrassment. Of course he has his heart broken, but he feels so ashamed for thinking that his best friend would even think of holding such feelings for him. He wants to hit himself for even liking Howon in the first place, knowing what the other thought about homouality. But Woohyun is not gay, is him? He only likes Howon, only Howon.

Howon throws one last glance at Woohyun and then walks away, mixing with the multitude of the streets, turning into one of these people who doesn’t bother ask if Woohyun was okay, because Woohyun was anything but okay.

Five years later…

It was probably the worst idea Sungyeol could have come up with. (Woohyun made a note to beat his best friend if this didn’t end well.)

“Highschool friends meeting at karaoke” said Sungyeol “Friday, eight pm. It’ll be fun.”

And then two beep’s indicating that Sungyeol had hung up on him.

Woohyun had have three days to think, and finally, the voice on the back of his voice (that frequently sounded like Sungyeol) convinced him of going, because He has never been one of going out, he won’t be there.

Oh how wrong that voice (Sungyeol) was.

Woohyun didn’t even have the will to open the door, he was more comfortable watching from outside. He could count ten people, four males and six females; ten persons out of their 30 people class had responded to Sungyeol’s call.

He remembered the faces and names of everyone in the small karaoke room. There was Chorong, a girl that used to have a crush on him; Eunji, the girl that always wore braids and smiled a little too wide; Min, who was just as short as in high school; Hyunah, the one that every boy swooned over when they were in school and now looked so professional in suit; Amber, the american-chinese transfer that didn’t look as a boy anymore (at least not as much); and lastly, there was his twin sister Jihyun, whom he hadn’t seen in months. The four males that were chatting with the girls were Myungsoo, the (clumsy) ice boy that had skipped a grade and was Sungyeol’s boyfriend; Dongwoo, the guy that laughed all the time and Sungyeol, who had organized the meeting.

Unfortunately, the last male was Howon.

Lee Howon, who used to be his best friend, who used to be so perfect- wait, he still was. Woohyun wanted to hit himself for having such thoughts, he was supposed to be over Howon years ago, for god's sake!. And so he did, smacking his forehead against the glass door. Bad decision- the sound called Sungyeol’s attention, and he was now motioning him to go inside, causing everyone to look at him. Great, now he couldn’t run away.

-

Two hours later, he was still there. No words exchanged with Howon, except for the greeting when they had locked eyes for a second and Woohyun said “Hi”. Of course, it was fun in some way, he got to spend time with his old friends and sister, sang some songs, drank some soju and talked about life with his friends (He wasn’t surprised to hear Hyunah say that Howon had studied music, since it was his lifelong goal when they were in high school).

Min and Amber had just finished their duet, when Woohyun saw Jihyun and Sungyeol exchange a look. He saw Sungyeol’s eyes glint and he nudged Dongwoo, who’s phone conveniently ringed and he excused himself to go outside.

Jihyun, using the opportunity, excused herself to the restroom, being followed first by Hyunah, and then all the girls stood up and exited the room, as if it was a tacit rule that if one goes to the restroom, every girl goes. It had intrigued the boys a lot in High school, Woohyun remembered, and it remembered one time when he and Howon had been so curious that they had actually followed Jihyun and her friends to the ladies restroom and it didn’t end nicely.

Suddenly, it was only the four males in the room. And Woohyun didn’t know what Sungyeol was playing to, and made another mental note to kick his when he stood up and dragged Myungsoo out, saying that they were going to buy more drinks and winking at him before exiting.

So it was only Woohyun and Howon.

“Remember that time when,” Howon started hesitantly, fixing his stare in the screen displaying the list of songs. “In freshman year, we wanted to know why the girls went to the restroom in flocks?”

“Yeah. I was thinking about that, too”

(Woohyun’s lips formed a sad smile. He remembered clearly how they used to be thinking the same thing all the time.)

Silence engulfed the room, neither of them speaking as it was still a bit awkward.

“It was nice seeing you again” Howon said  patting Woohyun’s shoulder lightly and disappeared out the door, leaving a hearts pounding heavily and a frozen Woohyun alone.

Maybe, just maybe, he wouldn’t have to hit Sungyeol after all.

-

“Woohyun, are you even listening?”

“Yeah- continue… what were you saying?”

Woohyun could see Sungyeol rolling his eyes over the phone.

“Christmas. Party. Howon.”

“Oh.”

It had been two months after the karaoke meeting with their high school friends, and Christmas was only around the corner. Sungyeol’s new awesome idea was to hold a Christmas party on the 24th and Howon was on the list. Woohyun wasn’t sure whether if he should go, but thinking back, Howon didn’t seem to be uncomfortable on his presence. Plus, there were going to be so much people that probably he wouldn’t see him.

“So? Are you in?”

“I am.”

Sungyeol said something about being excited about the event before hanging up.

-

The party was coming to an end and Woohyun felt really lucky, because he hadn’t seen Howon once. He still didn’t know what made him so nervous, or if after the meeting months ago they were finally in good terms.

There was so many people invited that Sungyeol had decided to use Myungsoo’s house to host the party, and it was going well apparently. Woohyun kind of felt disappointed, though. There was this part of him that wanted to see Howon (and punch Sungyeol for it). He wouldn’t admit it, but he wanted to make things clear with him.

“Woohyun~” a voice called and someone wrapped his arms around Woohyun’s neck by the back. He felt the smell of alcohol as that person rested his chin on his shoulder. “Woohyunie-hyung~”

Oh, so it was a drunk Sungjong.

“Woohyunie-hyung, why do you look so blue~?” Sungjong asked, dragging the syllables and hiccuping once in a while.

“Stop drinking, Sungjong-ah” he said and tried to snatch the can of beer  in the younger’s hand, but unsuccesfully.

“Do you miss Howonie-hyung~?” Sungjong asked lifting the can up and drinking a long sip. “He was- hick- here just now… H-hick-he was looking for you~”

Woohyun was about to ask Sungjong where Howon was, but suddenly felt a dead weight on his shoulder. Sungjong passed out, just great.

Leading the sleeping boy to an empty chair, he left him sleeping peacefully and started on his search for Howon. Thinking on how he used to behave, Howon wasn’t one for parties and always ended on the gardens for the fresh air. So Woohyun made his way to the front door, avoiding the couples kissing here and there. When he opened the door, he knew his guess was right- but for some reason he couldn’t bring himself to step ahead and talk to him.

Woohyun, you’re being stupid, he thought to himself, go and get you best friend back.

Gathering all his courage, Woohyun walked towards the man sitting on the porch and sat beside him. God, he needed something to drink now.

Howon noticed him but didn’t say anything.

“It’s cold here” Woohyun said and Howon nodded. They kept silent, enjoying the presence of the other male. Woohyun has missed Howon. He was his best friend, after all.

“I’m sorry” Howon said after a while. Woohyun was surprised, why would he be sorry? “I was an and hurt you… I should have supported you. I’m sorry.”

Woohyun then understood. He was talking about that day.

“It’s okay.”

“No. I should have accepted you for who you are… and not for what you like.” Howon said turning to stare at Woohyun. “Do you hate me?”

Woohyun’s eyes widened.

“No! I don’t hate you! Why would I?” he answered and Howon chuckled.

“Because I was so damn closed minded then. I thought that no one could like someone of the same , but actually… I was in denial, because I liked someone too”

Woohyun kept silent, and that encouraged Howon to continue.

“At that time… I liked you. And I still have these feelings for you.”

-

Woohyun was confused, and the only thing he registered was that Howon was kissing him and Woohyun kissed him back.

-

In the end, Woohyun made a note to not hit Sungyeol for the rest of their lives.
