Chapter 14

She

Tiffany couldn’t understand Jessica’s mood swings at all. She was so grumpy when she first saw her this morning. Then, Jessica suddenly had this bright smile on her face when she came out of her room.

“You’re becoming weirder and weirder as the days go by, Jessi.” But Tiffany’s comment was ignored. Jessica walked ahead of them. She left Taeyeon and Tiffany behind.

“I only left you for a couple of years but your taste in friends has changed immersely.” Taeyeon joked.

“Yeah, right. To be honest, my problem in choosing friends can be traced from way way back.” Tiffany retorted.

Taeyeon shot her a look. “Yah, what are you trying to say? You made your greatest decision in your life when you decided to be friends with me.”

“You’re so full of yourself.” Tiffany stuck out her tongue her best friend.

“I’m not!” Taeyeon shouted to Tiffany who is running to catch up with Jessica. Taeyeon tried to catch up. “Hey, Hwang Miyoung! Take your words back.”

*

Jessica couldn’t concentrate on anything for the whole day. Her mind is occupied the whole day. Tiffany kept on asking her what’s wrong but she just smiled in reply. Jessica knew that Tiffany will freak out once she finds out that she’ll be meeting Sooyoung that night. She kept her secret to herself.

Later that evening, Jessica is walking back and forth of her apartment. She’s waiting for Sooyoung and she’s so nervous that she couldn’t even stay at one place for five seconds.

The doorbell finally rang after fifteen minutes of her exercise. She panicked once again. She breathe heavily first before making her way to the door.
“Hi.” She greeted Sooyoung.

“Hi, Jessica. I’m sorry for disturbing you…”

“No, don’t be sorry. Come inside.” Jessica said. Her heart is beating so fast right now. She noticed that Sooyoung has dark circles around her eyes, an indication that she did not sleep well last night. “Are you okay?”

Sooyoung just nodded. She saw the pile of books sitting on Jessica’s tabletop. “ I should’ve asked you if you’re busy before I came.”

Jessica realized that Sooyoung saw her opened books. “Oh, I’m not that busy. I’ve been staring at my books for a while now. My mind refuses to absorb anything.”

Sooyoung nodded. She scanned the apartment. Jessica suddenly became conscious of her stuffs. She doesn’t clean that much. “I don’t have time to clean the apartment.” She said defensively.

Sooyoung smiled. It’s the first time she did ever since she arrived in the apartment. Jessica couldn’t help but smile too upon seeing that beautiful smile. “Don’t worry. I’m not judging you.”

After a while of silence, Sooyoung spoke again. “So, you live here alone?”

Jessica nodded. “Sooyoung, about the article…”

Sooyoung sighed because she knew it’s time to face the real issue here. “Look, Jessica I’m really really really sorry for bringing you into this complicated campaign.”

Jessica felt Sooyoung’s sincerity. The truth is, she’s not even mad at the girl. She has done nothing wrong. They were just misunderstood.

“Sooyoung, I’m not mad at you or anything. I’m actually worried about you…and your girlfriend.” She said those last words softly.

Sooyoung chuckled. “I don’t even know if I still have a girlfriend.”

Jessica saw the sadness in Sooyoung’s eyes and she wanted to slap herself right now because she’s actually happy when she heard what Sooyoung said.

“Your place is really nice.” Sooyoung didn’t know what she was getting in to. Jessica thought it was just a compliment. But Sooyoung said something else. “I’m actually looking for a place near campus…”

Jessica’s heart started beating fast. She’s nervous of what Sooyoung is trying to imply.

“Do you have an extra room that I can rent?” Sooyoung asked. She did not think this through at all. Yes, she’s been looking for a new place. She found one already last week. But she forgot all about that when she found out that Jessica is living alone. She’s just concern about the safety of the girl.

“Uhm…I don’t know, Sooyoung. It’s just that the elections…” Jessica was at a loss for words. She kept on forming phrases but she didn’t know what she really wanted to say.

“If what Jiyeon said last night was true, I am single now. So there’s no reason why people should hate me or you for that article.” Sooyoung reassured her.
“But…”

Sooyoung realized what Jessica is thinking of. “Oh, I’m sorry. I haven’t thought about your name being dragged in this campaign.”

“No, it’s okay if you want to stay here. But I want you to do a favor for me.” Sooyoung was waiting for what she’ll say next. “Can you clear to everyone about our real status?”

“Oh, right. I’m sorry, I forgot that you’re straight.”

“No!” Jessica blurted out. Sooyoung looked at her in surprise. “I didn’t mean it that way. I just don’t want to be perceived as the third party here and the one who ruins relationship.”

Sooyoung laughed. “I almost thought you’ll say you’re not straight.”

Jessica giggled nervously. “As if that’s gonna happen.”

“I know, I don’t know why I even thought of that.  And yes, I will clear your name to everyone. Can I move in?” Sooyoung asked like an excited child and Jessica couldn’t help but laugh.

They talked about random stuffs after that. When it was almost midnight, Sooyoung decided that she should go home. Jessica walked her to the door.
“So are we friends?” Sooyoung asked.

“Of course.” Jessica smiled.

“You are my soon to be housemate.” Sooyoung grinned.

“Yeah.” Jessica blushed because Sooyoung’s smile just made her knees weak.

“You’re blushing again.” Sooyoung giggled. “You blush so much, it’s so cute.”

Jessica could feel her cheeks getting hotter. She looked down to hide her face. What Sooyoung doesn’t know is Jessica don’t usually blush. This blush is just for her. This blush is her effect on Jessica.

**

Taeyeon received a message in the middle of the night. It was Nana. Taeyeon immediately went to the bar to fetch her other best friend.

“Nana!” Taeyeon called her best friend. She was shouting because the music is so loud.

“I’m sorry, Taeyeon. I didn’t know what to do. Jiyeon is so drunk, she wouldn’t let me take her home.” Nana said in Taeyeon’s ears.

Taeyeon found Jiyeon not too far away. She found Jiyeon dancing wildly in the dance floor. “Oh, she’s with her boy-“ Taeyeon stopped right there remembering that Jiyeon has a girlfriend, not a boyfriend.

She shot a look at Nana. “Why is she kissing that guy?!”

“They’re having problems and she’s drunk!” Nana told her.

“C’mon, let’s get the two of you home.” Taeyeon made her way to the crowd. When she reached Jiyeon who is dancing in a very close contact with the guy, she separated Jiyeon from the guy. Leaving the guy alone in the middle of the dance floor, she dragged Jiyeon towards the exit. Nana just followed them.
