Chapter 34: We can be at least friends, can’t we?

Youngmin's POV:

I was waiting for Gaein at the hospital. I needed to talk to her, to make sure that she’s okay.

I closed my eyes trying hard not to cry. It was so difficult for me to stand in one piece. My heart is just hopeless and restless, but if Gaein is happy with Chunji, I should let them be happy. I’m no one to ruin Gaein’s happiness. After all, all I want is that she can smile every day.

I sighed and looked at the clock. It’s been five hours since I’m waiting for her here. I haven’t eaten since yesterday, I didn’t sleep well, but that’s not even half of the reason why I feel so bad. The only thing that keeps me alive right now is the coffee that I’ve been drinking for three hours.

I heard the creak of a door opening. I lifted my head up only to find an old woman with puffy eyes passing by me.

After some minutes more, the door of Chunji’s room opened revealing Gaein going out of there. I immediately stood up and smiled at her pretending to be okay.

“Gaein, we need to talk” I smiled weakly.

She nodded her head slowly. Her eyes looked lost. It was so strange. I had never seen her in that way.

“What do you want to talk about?” she asked while she inserted some coins in the vending machine.

“Well, I just wanted to ask you how Chunji is”

“He’s fine. He’s recovering his memories” she said and opened the can of the drink she bought taking a sip of it.

“And you? How are you?” I asked her with a hint of worry in my words.

“Fine. Better than ever” she faked a smile.

“I’m glad to hear that” I also faked a smile.

“Youngmin… why are you here? Why were you waiting for me? We’re not together anymore, are you trying to make the things confusing?” She asked me raising a brow. Yes, they were hard words, but I knew it. I just didn’t want to stay away from her.

“The fact that we’re not together anymore as a couple doesn’t mean that we can’t continue being friends” I stated.

“Yes, it means that. I don’t want you to make a wrong idea about us” she nibbled her low lip.

“I won’t. We’ll be just friends, like we used to be”

“I don’t think that’s right” she said nervous and walked quickly.

“Why?” I asked following her.

“Because… because I don’t think we can forget each other like this”

“Why would you have to forget me if you don’t love me anymore? And don’t worry about me. I’ll just be your friend” I shrugged.

“Youngmin, stop making the things harder to me” Gaein sighed.

“I was trying to help. But I’m sorry if I disturbed you. I just wanted you to know that you can count on me whenever you need someone to talk. No matter what happens Gaein, I’ll be there for you, just remember this please” I said holding her shoulders. She looked down.

“That’s exactly what I don’t want. I don’t want you to be there for me. I just want you to forget about me and continue with your life” She muttered. I lifted her chin with my index finger so she would face me.

“Gaein, I think that’s not something you decide. I’m the one who decides what to do with my life” I said and walked away from her.

“And I also decide who I want to be part of my life and you’re not in the list” she screamed.

Tears were falling unstoppably from my eyes. I screamed and collapsed on the ground.

I may look miserable and stupid knowing that we’re nothing anymore but my heart just tells me this is not the end and that she’s going through a difficult moment right now. The day I see her completely happy, then that day my heart will be able to forget her…

Your POV:

I looked at the figure of Youngmin running away. He’s hurt, I know it, but the worst is that he’s hurt because of me.

“Gaein…” I heard someone saying.

I turned and saw Niel. He was happy to see me. The truth is that I miss him. He was my first real friend. I still remember when everything used to be so perfect: me ignoring his talks about insane things and dreaming about Chunji all the day. Yes, I wasn’t exactly living in the real world. I was just living a fantasy in my head, in my own world, but at least in that moment of my life I didn’t hurt anyone.

I hugged him and cried on his shoulder. He hugged me back comforting me.

“I missed you. I just want to go back to that time when there were just you and me and no one else” I sobbed.

“Gaein, you can’t continue closing into your world anymore” he said.

“I know, but it seems that everything I do is hurting the people I love”

“It’s not like that Gaein. We always end hurting the people we love at some time of our lives. That’s just part of the life and there’s nothing we can do to change that. Every time we choose something, we also give up on something else”

“I thought that I had made the right decision, but I don’t feel alright about it”

“What happened?”

“Well, I broke up with Youngmin and now I decided to be with Chunji”

“Why? I thought you loved him” He raised a brow.

“I do… I don’t know. I’m so confused” I ruffled my hair in desperation.

“Calm down Gaein. Sit down” he held my shoulders and sat me down on the park bench.

“I can’t leave Chunji. I think I’ll be able to love him again. After all, he’s the guy of my dreams. But there’s this hole left in my heart. I don’t know if I can forget about Youngmin. He’s someone that changed my life. He showed me so many things about everything. He was the first that made me love myself and accept myself just the way I am”

“Gaein, you should think the things right. Listen to your heart. For the first time don’t think about Chunji or about Youngmin, think about your feelings. If they both love you, they’ll accept your decision”

I rested my head on his shoulder and sighed. “Thank you so much Niel. Thanks for being a real friend and for supporting me even when I don’t deserve it… I’m sorry for pushing you away before”

“Don’t worry. I know you were hurt by that moment. Don’t forget I’ll always be here for you”

Chunji’s POV:

Gaein left leaving me with sweet and bitter thoughts. I know I shouldn’t be lying to her and that I shouldn’t force her to stay by my side because of my weakness, but there’s nothing I can do about it…

The door suddenly flew open. I turned my head to see Hyuna in front of me sobbing. I rolled my eyes. Does she really think I will fall for her fake acting?

“What are you doing here? Who let you get in? It’s supposed that you’re not allowed to visit me”

“Oppa, I have something to tell you…”

“No, I’m going to tell you something. First, stay away from me and from Gaein, let us be happy, okay? If you at least feel bad for what you did, just stay away from us. Second, don’t even try to say you’re sorry because I know you’re not. And third, just leave. You’re making me sick”

“I know that what I did was wrong and don’t worry, I’ll leave you both be happy from now on. I just wanted to tell you something I think you have the right to know…”

“What is it?” I asked confused.

“Well, you might not remember it clearly but the night…”

“Go straight to the point. What is exactly what you have to tell me?

“I’m pregnant and you’re the baby’s father…”
