Chapter 6

I Aim to Please You...

Ryeowook's POV

Needless to say, my mom was overjoyed when Henry told her I remembered him.  She pulled us both into a huge hug and went on and on about how her babies were reunited at last.  I was totally embarrassed by my mother's display, but Henry only laughed and seemed to enjoy it.

Later that day when Henry had gone back to his room to sleep off his jet lag, I pulled my mother aside to ask about Kyuhyun.  When I brought him up, my mother's face grew sad and her eyes told of deep emotion.  She shook her head and sighed, then told me,

"Well... I don't really know much about his situation..."  She trailed off, but I looked at her expectantly, waiting for her to tell me what she knew.  Seeing that I wasn't going to drop the subject she sighed and continued.

"I'm not really sure if I should be telling you this, but I trust your intentions for knowing are good"  She paused and I nodded, assuring her that I was just innocently curious.

"Well when we sent you off to school, Kyuhyun took it the hardest.  Henry was obviously sad, but Kyuhyun was crushed.  He wouldn't come out of his room and he refused to speak to anyone for weeks.  He barely ate, and he started to become sickly.  Well, his parents became worried and when they found out why he was so depressed, they sent him to Japan.  He was sent to a boarding school and from what I can tell, it wasn't pleasant.  It was almost like a military school, everyone was cold and it was cutthroat competition between all the students.  We didn't hear anything from him, but when he returned 6 years later he was... different.  He would talk to us, and was always polite, but he wasn't the same as he was before.  His parents were proud and said that he was now on the right path to becoming the company's heir, but it's obvious he isn't happy..."

She looked at me with tears in her eyes, and I knew how much this hurt her.  My mother had practically raised Henry and Kyuhyun, so they were like children to her.  I knew it pained her to see one of her "babies" so upset.  It probably hurt her more that he was so cold, just by looking into her eyes I could see how helpless she felt.

I hugged my mother, hoping I could somehow ease her pain.  I quickly tried to hide the tears that were forming in my own eyes.  My mother was always sensitive to other people's emotions, and it seemed I had inherited the trait.  The story of Kyuhyun's loneliness made my chest ache for him.

I felt guilty for causing him so much pain, but I felt even worse that I could barely remember him at all.  I knew we had been friends, but that was pretty much it.  My mother seemed to catch onto my thoughts because she laughed at the confused look on my face and ruffled my hair fondly,

"Don't worry sweetie.  You always had the worst memory.  When you were little you used to forget who I was!"  I smiled, feeling a little bit better.  I was starting to worry that I had some kind of mental disorder that caused memory loss.

"Mom... I want to talk to him... do you think he'd let me?"  Her teasing smile faltered and the sad look returned to her face.  She smiled at me sympathetically, but advised me,

"Honey, it's best if you just let him come to you.  I know you're eager to talk to him and be friends again, but I don't want either of you to get hurt"  I looked at her questioningly, but she ignored the question in my eyes and just continued,

"Don't worry, it's a big house but you two will have to meet eventually.  Just be patient, okay?"  I could tell that she was hiding something form me, but it was obvious that she didn't want to tell me, so I didn't push.  I figured she had her reasons and I respected that.  My mom gave me a hug and I snuggled into to her arms like I used to when I was a small child.  I couldn't stop the happy smile that lit up my face, as I breathed in her comforting smell.  I had missed her desperately and it felt fantastic to be back with my loved ones.

She released me from the hug and almost as if on cue, Henry came barreling around the corner and began dragging me towards the front door.  He was talking so fast that I could only make out something about a keyboard.  I laughed at his excitement and allowed myself to be pulled along.  However, when we passed by the looming staircase, I couldn't help but look up at it wistfully, wanting desperately for Kyuhyun to be part of the happiness.

**********

Henry continued to pull me down the hill that led to his house.  He was still bouncing excitedly, but I was out of breath and I pulled him to a stop so I could regain my energy.  He laughed when he saw how out of breath I was and teased,

"Geez Wookie!  I know exercise was never your strong suit, but c'mon!  Your father is in better condition than you are!"  I glared at him playfully and punched him in the arm.

"How did you know I at running?"  I managed to huff out.  Henry smiled and rolled his eyes in an amused manner,

"Even when we were kids, you used to always at tag.  You would always end up getting tired and Kyuhyun would end up carrying you home!"  He stopped to laugh and I blushed in embarrassment,

"What was even more funny was that my brother wasn't athletic either!  He'd pretend to be all tough and insist on carrying you, but as soon as we got home he'd practically collapse!"  Henry was howling with laughter, and I knew I must have been redder than a tomato.

"Ya!  Respect your elders, you brat!"  I yelled but Henry just laughed harder.  After he had finally calmed down I asked,

"Where are we going anyway?"   He rolled his eyes again and quickly answered,

"Aish!  You really are getting old, not only are you out of shape, but now your hearing is going as well!  Tsk, tsk"   I pouted and crossed my arms childishly, but was shocked when Henry started laughing again and pinched my cheeks.

"Aww, don't pout Wookie, it's too cute!  Anyway, we're going to pick up your keyboard.  I heard your dad say it had arrived at the mail office"  I blushed again at his compliment, then immediately brightened at the prospect of seeing by beloved instrument once again.

"Oh good!"  I smiled happily and Henry returned it with a grin of his own.

"Why do you need it anyway?" he asked and I replied,

"Well, I'm gonna be the music instructor for some of the families that live around you" I explained.

"You'll be prefect!"  I smiled at the compliment, but I couldn't help but ask,

"How do you know?"  He sent me a warn smile and easily replied,

"Well, you're the reason I got into music in the first place"  I looked at him in surprise and he nodded in confirmation,

"Remember, you would always practice piano and I wanted to play with you so I begged my mom for lessons.  Of course she wasn't really listening so she signed me up for violin lessons, so my plan kind of backfired..."

"Aww, that's so cute!"  I practically squealed as I hugged him.  I was so caught up in the adorable image of little Henry playing violin that I missed the happy blush that spread over my dongsaeng's face.

I grabbed his hand and started pulling him along.  I smiled at how I had reversed our positions and Henry protested before swinging me so I ended up on his back.  I was in shock at the sudden movement and Henry took the opportunity to start running with me in piggy-back position.

"Now I finally get the chance to carry you!"  He yelled happily, and I was grateful that I was on his back so he couldn't see the violent blush that heated my face.
