Chapter 26

Youngest of Pieces: [WHO- I AM] (8)

“You okay?” Emelia slinks by to quietly ask Hannah when they are on stage, [I Love You] brightly finished and the girls taking positions for the fifth and last song – [Original]. Hannah did try her best to look happy during the bright stage, but she totally failed and she can’t even jump because her body is very sensitive now. She thinks that if she is going to jump, an accident might happen.

But Hannah gives a nod, her face-expression not changing but her nod saying it is okay. Just one more song before they can get off the stage. The girl keeps her back straight, hoping it will help whatever it is in annoying her. She feels bad for wanting to get off the stage, but she can’t help it. They will come back to Bangkok next week, so hopefully she can make up for it then. Hannah touches Emelia’s arm slightly when they take their positions, a touch that says ‘thank you’. The girls don’t have to say much on stage to each other, a touch says enough.

[Original] is the song marketing 5 Pieces’ turning point. Hannah has heard it and she has read it many times. Before [Original] was released in 2010, 5 Pieces was struggling and they were foreign rookies not knowing what they were doing. There were a lot of questions about the group in summer 2009 after the girls stopped the promotions of their first album and Hannah went to Japan for acting activities, and the other members went back to Sweden for school. Were they breaking up? Were they going to do only solo activities and disappear, not being popular but continuing to work while being a failure group? At the beginning of 2010, the trio of 5 Pieces (Maria, Carolina & Julia) released a sub-group single as a ballad group and soon after Emelia made her solo debut too, while Hannah was in Japan filming the second Japanese drama. Was 5 Pieces really splitting up and doing different activities? Were they really a failure?

SM Entertainment wasn’t giving up on the group. Hannah’s drama was a success in Japan, the girls were actually better at Korean and they were improving on their singing and dancing too even if the world couldn’t see it yet. Media was saying that if SM Entertainment was smart, they would let 5 Pieces focus promotions in Japan thanks to Hannah’s success, but SM knew that 5 Pieces could get forgotten in Korea if they did that (abandoned) and knew that 5 Pieces could make it big in Japan with time without rushing there; while Korea needed to love them first as that would be 5 Pieces start point. That was why it took three years before 5 Pieces made their debut in Japan: SM knew Japan was waiting for them.

The ladies got to work with Jo Insuk in Korea, a producer and song-writer, and they created the mini-album [Original] together – six songs. The moment the music video for the intro track [We’re Back] was released, headlines came out saying that fans realises how they have missed the charismatic girl-group, and the moment the mini-album came out it was as if a new group had appeared. 5 Pieces wasn’t rookies anymore; they owned the stage they before just enjoyed, they had catchy and understandable lyrics, with a catchy choreography too, and they did know how to sing and dance. 5 Pieces was everywhere that summer. Programs that before didn’t let them come because they were foreigners were now lining up, begging 5 Pieces to make an appearance. Teenagers were flocking around them and fans would even follow 5 Pieces inside stores to see what 5 Pieces would buy; to eat or to wear. And close after that, 5 Pieces started online shopping. A lot.

That song became 5 Pieces’ hit song, the same way [Gee] is SNSD’s – Making 5 Pieces’ way in to the history books of music, especially in k-pop. It only needs one song to become someone.

And it is still popular, the ladies guess that because the moment the song starts to play the whole audience starts to cheer in front of them and scream as if it is the latest hit song [Daze] playing, but they all know it isn’t. When Maria starts to sing, the audience is actually shouting out the lyrics along with her, and it gives you that feeling that you aren’t a rookie doing slightly well; though Hannah doesn’t get that feeling with her performance it feels that the group have done well with [Original]. It’s not anything “wow this is crazy! Let’s jump!” insane kind of feeling but more … “this is the result”, a calm and proud feeling with the audience going insane instead.

Though Hannah can’t really enjoy it, just that feeling of that they are in Bangkok, performing a Korean song that came out three years ago, and the audience is singing along to it. It could be the same feeling when going to the army and performing with them singing along, from what the girls have heard from SNSD anyway. The other members can enjoy it. Maria worries about Hannah during the stage, for each song she glances at Hannah to see if her face have turned paler or if she is loosing focus, but beside from that Hannah looks a little distant and her face-expression is lost during their cute and bright performance of [I Love You], Maria is proud over that the youngest doesn’t give up.

They have come all the way to Bangkok to perform; no way would Hannah step down from that.

Sweaty from both the weather and the performances, 5 Pieces comes off the stage after the final song. They return the microphones and thank the staff for their hard work and bows while heading back to their room, a camera put in front of their faces. Maria walked down first, and when heading to the room she turns around so Julia almost walks in her and Maria steps to the side to have people walk by her until Hannah is the one walking by and the leader walks up next to her. The group is wiping the sweat from their necks and foreheads, catching their breath while having their manager leading them right.

Hannah only looks up when hearing Maria say her name, but Maria is talking to one of the cameras.

“Hannah has gotten sick. But she did fantastic on stage,” Maria informs with the thumbs up, speaking English; the youngest doesn’t give any kind of reaction beside from glancing that direction.

The leader puts her hand on Hannah’s back for the youngest to follow along when they bow to greet another artist who is performing tonight.

“You performed five songs straight that you prepared yesterday?” the man filming wonders, having some trouble walking backstage and filming at the same time.

“We performed five songs straight with a little talk in the middle, and we performed all five live…” Maria answers and she gives a satisfied smile along with a few seconds silence, a satisfied yet tired smile. “I think we did really well and the audience seemed to love it, and even if the weather in Hongkok- oh my gosh! Bangkok, I mean Bangkok! The weather here is so hot, ha-ha, but even so it was a blast on stage, like always.”

Hannah actually smiles at Maria’s mistake by saying Hongkok instead of Bangkok, and just by the end of Maria’s sentence they are entering the room so once they are in there Maria have to repeat her mistake and say she can’t believe she just said that, taking it lightly. They talk about the performance backstage, letting managers say their opinions about it and the ladies commenting out things for each other, and Hannah is busy breathing in and out calmly to try figure out how her stomach is doing. It’s still hurting, not as much as it did before she threw up on the plane, but it is a nasty feeling inside her.

The girl has just finished changing shoes when the camera-man shoves the camera up in her face as she stands up, the youngest forcing out a smile. It feels like her whole body gives her power to show a smile; which can be why she didn’t smile on stage. She is just drained on energy; she hasn’t eaten today, she doesn’t even dare to eat, she has been sleeping and feeling like she can fall asleep any second and her stomach is both hurting and feeling weird. It is definitely not a good day to work. Hannah is even preparing to put on that mask as soon as she stops sweating from the stage, but the camera in her face makes her stop all movements beside from that forced smile in her face.

“You pulled through five songs on stage while being sick?” the American man asks her to start make her talk.

Hannah gives a nod, her smile slightly disappearing as she doesn’t have the energy to keep it. “It is always fun to perform, but I guess it isn’t shown when I’m sick. Is it shown that much?”

“It wasn’t seen on stage, but you look like you are going to fall apart now…” he comments and Hannah gives a pout.

“I don’t like being sick,” Hannah just pouts, sighing.

“You don’t rest when you are sick?” he wonders, and Hannah can kind of guess there is something in his questions that makes him want to make her bring out some comments that gives a bad side to the k-pop wave; to being an idol in Korea. But she is thinking very slowly now, and it doesn’t really tell her much than that she guess where this is leading. She just answers like she would’ve done if it was a Korean staff filming her; beside from that she speaks English.

So the girl is shaking her head to start answer the question, still having a small pout in her face, and it is definitely seen that she is not in her best condition.

“If we have a schedule, we have to go to it. But … if I’m so sick that I just can’t do the schedule, of course I don’t have to do it; it’s in the end my decision,” Hannah is tiredly answering. “At times I’m too stubborn, so my members or the managers have to kind of, drag me to the bed… But I love what I’m doing, so I’ll give my all even if my all in this condition isn’t much.”

“Hannah is the opposite of most people,” Emelia says when sneaking up to stand next to Hannah, letting her shoulder face the camera. “She seems to hate the bed, so even when she is sick she doesn’t rest. It’s because she doesn’t like to disappoint people: Especially her self and our fans.”

Hannah hides a yawn. There are things she wants to say now, but she doesn’t say it. She doesn’t want get opinions from people over how she thinks and what she feels, about how she thinks of life. To say “I live to work” or “I only live once”, she doesn’t find that the good way to explain why she works even if she can barely keep her eyes open. Her members would say it is because of the car-accident, where the doctors said that Hannah would die because of the coma she couldn’t wake up from; Maria says Hannah found the light in life after then, just continuing to work nonstop and becoming a workaholic. Maybe that’s true, but Hannah knows it is more to it. She fears for that one day she might wake up, and all of this was just a dream. Working with 5 Pieces, being on stage, meeting these people that say they respect and love you, people that think you look pretty and is cute and sing well… She fears it all will be gone one day. Maybe it isn’t a dream, but maybe she suddenly is in another accident, and that time she maybe get hurt so badly. Live life while you can, right?

To explain it easier: she doesn’t want to take life for granted. What she has today is precious, it is a dream she is living – a dream beyond imagination – and she doesn’t want to take it for granted. She wants to work hard to be reminded of what she has and what she has worked for to get, for what she is living for. Being an idol is her life, her dream, her imagination and her reality. It is so much to her that every day she fears to loose it. There is so much to loose for her, and Hannah can’t forget that.

The managers are calling out for them that they have to hurry up and leave if they want to get to the airport in time, so Hannah gives a final attempt to smile at the camera when Emelia leaves the screen.

“Love can make you do crazy things,” Hannah jokes in English to the camera-man, saying that as a final attempt to explain why she goes up on stage when she is sick. The camera-man smiles and he thanks her before she walks off to get her things and put on her mask.

Grabbing their things and still being in stage clothes but in different shoes, 5 Pieces leaves to head to the airport for the next location. It is five girls surrounded by protectors (managers and guards) on the way out to the van, and outside it is a shocking amount of people screaming after them like crazy fans. It is seriously so many people that the camera-team can’t even get through because everyone just follows the group of ladies, flocking around them. After getting in the van it doesn’t really get better.

‘Superstars’; that is the word the American documentary will use to describe this moment.

Fans flocking around the van, making them unable to move and it takes fifteen minutes if not more before the van is out on the road – and fans are following in taxis.

“Most of these fans actually left the concert after your performance, knowing you are leaving straight after,” their manager reveals to the girls in the van. Maria is kind to translate it for the American man filming the girls in the van now too.

Hannah’s only thought is that if all these people were at the concert – that huge place – it seriously must be about half the crowd that have left. It was so many fans following the van, shockingly a lot. Even after leaving, a bunch of them are following behind. It’s crazy. Their manager keeps complaining that they won’t get in time to the plane like this. The youngest in the back can’t seem to care much; she falls asleep almost right away, completely knocked out again though the ride to the airport isn’t long. Manager Lee keeps glancing at her, hoping she will be okay until the doctor can come in the morning.

She can’t hide under a hood now, as her prepared hair might be ruined, so when they finally reach the airport she makes sure to stick close to someone as if she will be hidden next to that person, and she walks with her head down, continuing to think that she is not rude and that she will repay the fans in Thailand on the trip next week. She will give her everything to please their fans next week. This week, she can’t help that she is completely gone. She is cold sweating again and feels that her stomach is still not kind. And she isn’t hungry, though she hasn’t eaten since yesterday. Why is that?

“Maybe you are pregnant,” Julia gives a joke when they are sitting at the plane on the way to Manila, Philippines.

“No way,” Hannah shakes her head lightly, not believing that for a second. She actually hasn’t even thought of that, but it is impossible.

“Are you kidding me?” Maria bursts out, trying to keep her voice low to not disturb others but the words Julia said just was like getting a bomb blowing in your head. Hannah actually thinks she is getting a headache.

“What? She could be pregnant, right? It’s not like she doesn’t have -”

“Oh my god!” Hannah whines, turns her face to hide by the window. Emelia next to her seems totally uninterested in the subject, busy looking through something on the MacBook she got on her birthday by fans (one of them).

Maria looks like the thought of having the youngest being pregnant is the most horrifying thing said in her life; she leans over Emelia’s seat from her own seat behind to look at Hannah with big eyes and talks in a low whispering tone.

“Are you sure you aren’t?”

“I’m not pregnant!” Hannah hisses. “Oh my god, what do you think of me?!”

“I think you got a hot boyfriend and he has a hot girlfriend and we know the two of you can’t keep your hands off each other-”

“Maria!” Hannah whines, covering her own ears. She can’t seriously take this. Being pregnant, she? No way! And that her members think that makes her even sicker.

“Have you done a test?” Julia whispers, leaning over the seat in front of Emelia’s where she is sitting next to Carolina.

“I’m not pregnant!” Hannah hisses anew.

Carolina suddenly turns around in her seat. “You are pregnant???”

“No!”

“Voices, ladies, keep it low!” Their manager hisses from behind, sitting next to Maria. He then looks down at Hannah. “I hope you aren’t what they say you are.”

“I’m not!” Hannah hisses.

“You aren’t?”

Hannah glares at Carolina. “I’m not pregnant.”

“What do you think of this picture?” Emelia wonders, showing the picture on her MacBook to Hannah. The others just look at her, Maria asking how she can be looking through pictures in this serious conversation. “She said she isn’t pregnant, we’ll just hear what the doctor says in the morning – if he says she is pregnant: then I can start swearing.”

For some reason, Hannah isn’t sure if she is happy or upset over Emelia’s words, but either way she is too tired to care for it. She ignores Julia’s words after that, starting to listen to music and lock herself in with eyes closed and disappearing to another world.

But she can’t drop that thought.

What if she actually is pregnant? She got no idea of how it feels like, or how long after it takes before you can know you are pregnant. What would happen if she is pregnant? She is just twenty years old, just left her teens. It isn’t like it is strange for someone her age to be pregnant; her mother was pregnant at this age. But Hannah can’t be. It would ruin her life, wouldn’t it? She has a tour in Japan and another tour after that, and she has to release her book, she has to live her life… Thinking of being pregnant is like pushing a knife slowly through her stomach. She can feel her stomach starting to turn again when she is being half asleep on the plane. She can’t stop grimacing. She doesn’t want to be pregnant.  A baby; first she wouldn’t get any sleep, she wouldn’t be able to do anything but to care for that baby, and when that baby grew older she would have to pick it up from school and make dinner and she would become a housewife. Jonghyun… he would like it. He could still be working; it wouldn’t affect him at all. He could go on tours, give a call now and then and say he misses them, “them”, not her. He would get to do all the things she loves.

No. She can’t be pregnant. But what would the agency say? What about 5 Pieces? Maybe she can’t keep the baby? “It would ruin your career”. She can imagine all of it goes wrong. But she can’t see herself killing someone, even if it barely is alive. Something growing inside of her…

Hannah throws away the earphones on the side when rushing up from her seat, jogging to the toilet with a hand over .

She isn’t pregnant.

In Manila, 5 Pieces appears at the end of a concert to perform [Daze] and [Black & White]. It is around midnight at that time. Afterwards, they go to a hotel to stay overnight before they will go to Shanghai in the morning for a TV appearance. Hannah showers and goes to bed with her hair still wet, feeling like a zombie. She has no idea of how she has managed to pull through today’s performances; there has been nothing wrong with her voice, she has just felt completely knocked out the whole day. She gets to share room with Emelia at the hotel, the only girl who is not on her about being pregnant.

Emelia is in other thoughts though. Since her birthday when she talked to the ladies about preparing a photo book for their fifth anniversary in November, Emelia has been going through pictures. She has thousand of pictures to choose from, but she can’t take all of them. Which is why she keeps looking at her MacBook – what pictures is there to choose from? She goes through all of them, laughing at some and having fun showing the other ladies. Some pictures have been totally forgotten, but it is fun to see them because all pictures have a memory stuck to them.

Pictures from their debut time; backstage when the girls were studying Korean at the same time, or from last year’s concert in Japan where f(x) featured; so many pictures from backstage with the friends. She even took pictures of fans at their [Original] comeback, because fans loved them deeply at that time and the girls felt so thankful that Emelia wouldn’t anywhere without waving to someone who shouted out her name. The group has been through a lot. They fool around backstage, but they practice seriously too. They don’t hide when they are nervous, whether there are cameras around or not, and Emelia has been able to capture all kind of emotions backstage of the ladies with her own camera.

Emelia is still awake when Hannah has fallen asleep in the hotel room. The other members maybe thinks the scared youngest is pregnant, but would a pregnant girl be cold sweating? Emelia doesn’t know. She thinks the youngest is just sick; it can’t be something else. 5 Pieces journey has yet only begun, right?

But she can’t help but to think what would happen if Hannah now was pregnant. Would they have to cancel all their tours and plans for the year? What would happen in the future?

She looks at the girl sleeping in the bed next to her. The few times Hannah gets really sick, she gets completely dead; like now. Other times it is just a small cold, which everyone gets when the weather is changing or such. But looking at the blond-hair girl that Emelia has known since she was nine years old, Emelia can’t see her as a pregnant girl. Chubby; yes, but pregnant; no.

Emelia will beat Jonghyun up if the group’s baby is pregnant. She can already now think of what to shout in his face. He would probably love it if Hannah is pregnant; the guy that Emelia has heard got angry at Hannah for not wanting to get a family already. He would be the one to blame, everything will be his fault.

Hannah sleeps like a child that night. She turns off the alarm when it goes on in the morning, but within seconds falls back asleep. Emelia wakes up by her own alarm that sets off half an hour later (Hannah always has to try wake up so early), and after washing up, Emelia decides to eat breakfast in the hotel room. Not daring to leave the sleeping girl alone, Emelia ignores to go in to the other hotel room where the others will be eating breakfast and instead calling for room-service on her own; giving a message to the managers and other members that she is eating in her own room.

The smell of food wakes Hannah up. Waffles especially, she can smell, with Emelia happily eating while sitting on her own bed.

“Awake? Are you hungry? I ordered eggs, scrambled eggs, waffles and yoghurt so you just have to choose,” Emelia says when noticing the blonde girl moving. “They only had banana yoghurt though.”

“I’m not hungry.”

“You haven’t eaten anything, Hannah. Don’t you think that could be the reason your stomach is making so much noise?” Emelia complains.

“I’m still not hungry… It smells awful,” Hannah mutters, sounding like she still is sleeping and her eyes are barely open. It feels like her body won’t be able to move all day. She has no energy and she is in the worst mood. The smell of food makes her stomach want to turn, not growling to be filled but turning as if the emptiness in it wants to get away from the smell; but her body gives no attempt to move.

“It tastes yummy,” Emelia moans, liking the food she is chewing. She isn’t the kind to force something on someone, so if Hannah says no to food, Emelia won’t push her into eating.

Hannah glances at her friend whenever her eyelids have the strength to open. She is lying on her stomach under the quilt, her head resting on the white pillow and hand under her stomach. The girl lies like that while Emelia is finishing up her breakfast, even when it knocks on the door the blonde girl doesn’t move.

“Julia said you’re pregnant!” stylist Yong Hyun rushes inside the room, and he opens his mouth widely when seeing that Hannah is still in bed. He rushes to squat down next to her bed, be face to face with Hannah. “Are you sure you are pregnant? You look sick… I thought you were sick yesterday. Are you sure you are pregnant…?”

“I’m not pregnant,” Hannah whines, hiding her face in the pillow. “I’m sick. Not pregnant. I’m not pregnant.”

“Maybe you are in denial,” Yong Hyun breathes out, running his fingers through her hair. “Ah, Mi Young will freak out over this tangled hair of yours.”

“I’ll brush it,” Hannah mutters. She always brushes her hair.

Yong Hyun looks at Emelia who is starting to peel an egg. “Has she eaten?” he asks in a low voice. Emelia sighs and shakes her head, annoyingly saying that the girl hasn’t eaten since Friday – two days ago now! The stylist would want to pull off the quilt that is lying over Hannah, but he knows she has a habit of sleeping in just underwear, and he wouldn’t do such a thing to her. “Why not eat? If there now is something growing inside you, he or she will need to be fed just as much as you.”

Hannah doesn’t even have the strength to do anything at his comment. She doesn’t wave her hand at him to try hit him and neither does any sound leave to say how she doesn’t like it, she just lies there.

“The doctor will be in Shanghai when we arrive there,” Emelia tells the stylist when he sits down to take some yummy breakfast from them. “She just needs to stay alive until then.”

“Hannah, you know, you are the worst person when you are sick. Among all people I know, no one is as stubborn as you,” Yong Hyun complains. “I’ll eat up all your eggs if you don’t get up.”

Hannah still doesn’t react. She is slowly going to sleep again, which Emelia informs the stylist about as she seems to have learnt that now. He sighs, feeling hopeless. It is true. While doing schedules, Hannah will be all “I’ll do my best” and “I WILL continue”, but the moment she goes to bed she will ignore everyone. No, there is just no one as annoying as Hannah when being sick.

Emelia and Yong Hyun sits there and talks for just a few minutes without caring about Hannah before the stylist ends up just looking at Hannah. He can’t see her face the way she is laying now.

“You will faint if you don’t eat,” he tells her.

The girl moves her head to lie like she did before; looking out at nothing in particular while Yong Hyun looks at her, sitting at the end of her bed next to the food carriage he has been eating from along with Emelia sitting on her own bed.

“I had a nightmare,” Hannah whispers.

“You had a nightmare?” Yong Hyun asks with a chuckle. “Is that why you aren’t eating?”

“It was my twenty-second birthday and I was fat and had a baby and I was in Sweden all alone because I had gotten kicked out of 5 Pieces for getting pregnant and I watched TV where a beautiful blonde girl had taken my place in the group,” Hannah explains her nightmare while spacing out.

“Oh darling, darling, darling,” Yong Hyun sighs, hearing how the girl is tearing up while telling them and he moves to sit closer with his leg up on the bed and hand on her back, leaning forward to see her face. “It was a nightmare, not reality. No one would kick you out of the group.”

“Or ever replace you,” Emelia fills in, not caring to comfort her friend.

“It’s Julia’s fault,” Hannah is quietly crying, wiping her tears. “My stomach hurts and she says I’m pregnant and I don’t want to get pregnant and I’m freaking out over it…”

“You don’t even know if you are pregnant.”

“Everyone says it!”

“How would they know?!” Emelia bursts out. “Hannah. Get up from bed, eat and get ready so we can go to Shanghai and meet the freaking doctor who will ing tell you that you are not pregnant and everything is fine!”

Hannah hides in the pillow again. She just wants to cry. Over being sick or that she is tired or anything, she just knows that she wants to cry. She is so tired that the tiredness goes over into tears.

“Hannah, I’m sure it’s nothing,” Yong Hyun kindly tells her. “Do you want me to get Maria? I’m sure your diva captain can cheer you up.”

But the girl shakes her head in the pillow, continuing to cry quietly for herself. It isn’t a panicking cry but more a quiet cry with the tears just flooding out like a waterfall. Emelia tells the stylist to just let the youngest be, knowing that Hannah still will be ready for them to leave. She just needs some time to gather herself.

She keeps crying for herself, not falling asleep or talks to the others or getting up; she just lies in the bed and cries and pretends she doesn’t exist. Aren’t there times when you just want to sit down and cry out of nowhere? Just let it all out, all your emotions and thoughts and worries and everything about life; just let it out with tears?

Hannah has those times. Everything just gets overwhelming and the only way she feels she can let it all out is through crying.

The horror of having the members say she is pregnant has really gone up to her head. She isn’t pregnant but just having the members say she is, frightens her. It makes her over think about it all and even more wanting to cry.

Emelia lets the girl cry how much she wants until they have to get ready to leave. She lies down next to Hannah, already dressed, and tells her younger friend in her rare cuteness to get ready to leave. Without showing her face, Hannah glides out of bed. Stylist Yong Hyun has left, and he was apparently wrong about Hannah’s clothes under the quilt as when she glides up from bed she is wearing a long t-shirt and she easily pulls on the jeans she wore before changing in to stage outfits yesterday. Emelia sighs when seeing Hannah go hide in the bathroom to easily get ready, and seven minutes later the girl comes back outside, this time have changed her night t-shirt to the v-neck t-shirt she also wore yesterday. Her tangled hair is untangled now too.
