Chapter 14

Youngest of Pieces: [WHO- I AM] (8)

*Don’t you… forget about me…

Don’t! Don’t1 Don’t! Don’t!

Don’t you… forget about me…*

Emelia is singing in a low voice to the music she has put on playing for the apartment, dancing forward across the living-room while moving her body along to Simple Minds [Don’t You (Forget About Me)], a song that she deeply fell in love with many years ago when she first saw the movie The Breakfast Club. She is wearing a pair of big baggy pants and a long-sleeve t-shirt, her body looking skinny in the t-shirt and when she comes out from the living-room she dances around Hannah who she almost was about to bump in to. Hannah laughs over Emelia’s good mood and instead of heading in to the living-room like she was going to; Hannah turns around to follow Emelia.

“What are you taking with you?” Hannah wonders, following Emelia with small fast steps in to Emelia’s bedroom to see the bag opened on the floor and Hannah takes a seat on the bed. “Just clothes?”

“Clothes, movies, perfume and that stuff, my camera…” Emelia is counting up while still moving along to the music, singing along to it when she doesn’t talk.

“You won’t bring anything more with you than this?”

“We’ll be back in less than a week, so if you forget something you could always take it then,” Emelia answers and shrugs her shoulders. “You left Kyung Ho alone in your room?”

Hannah smiles cutely. “He has company. Michin won’t leave him alone,” Hannah answers. “But he isn’t much of a help when it comes to packing.”

“Ask him if he wants to borrow a movie.”

The youngest smiles when heading out of the room, walking to her own bedroom where the door is opened; playing around with the puppy Michin is the eight years old Korean little brother of Hannah, little Kim Kyung Ho.

They first met at the hospital after the car-accident back in 2010, and ever since they have kept in touch, being close as siblings and Hannah never forgets to thank him when 5 Pieces receive big awards. He helped her a lot during her time at the hospital, reading to her and keeping her company and constantly calling her Sleeping Beauty because she had been in a coma for twelve days while he was reading for her. It’s funny how he had been bored staying at the hospital day and night, and then a teenage girl in coma arrives and he spends all his time reading and talking to her. Hannah still remembers when she had woken up from the coma, terrified because she couldn’t move and the strangers of the nurses and doctor terrified her even more, all until a familiar voice calling her “Sleeping Beauty” made her calm down.

“Can I take care of Michin when you are in Japan?” Kyung Ho asks with a laugh when noticing Hannah is back in the room.

“If you can convince the other ladies,” Hannah jokes with him and sits down on the floor where he is playing with the puppy.

Kyung Ho’s smile fades just a little when looking at her face, being reminded of something. “Don’t you get sad when reading the articles about you?” he wonders and looks down at his hands that are touching Michin’s paw; he had thought of it when she was out of the room, so he asks it right away to not forget it. “The bad ones.”

“You mean the recent ones?” Hannah wonders and sits up straight on the floor, putting her legs tailor. “Sure, I can get upset when it is wrong and I see comments supporting the article.”

Just a few days ago at an award show, Emelia had created headlines when throwing off her shoes in the middle of their [Black & White] performance when she sang her part *turn the volume up, throw the shoes off*, and after the performance she had written on twitter “I do it my way”, which was pointing out at the article that came out two days earlier where someone thought that 5 Pieces were following the usual idol group image that they have in Korea – cute girls image because of their [Oppa] concept – and since 5 Pieces is known to do different from the ordinary girl-group images, it seemed to get a lot of attention. Emelia didn’t like the idea of having people thinking she is like everyone else, so she just had to do something to say she is not like ordinary Korean girl-group members. And it’s true too. 5 Pieces is under a lot of questions about being Korean-Wannabes in behaviour and such, while fans are saying they aren’t wannabes because 5 Pieces does nothing the way Koreans do things, but eyes are on them the whole time to try get a proof over that 5 Pieces want to be Koreans. Honestly, they don’t want to be Koreans, they just love the Korean music and their lives now.

“There is always a positive and negative mind in everything, so don’t worry about it. While there comes out some negative articles it also comes out positive articles,” Hannah tries to cheer her friend up when seeing how upset he looks over the recent articles.

He smiles widely at her words. “Like the one that says you can take on the world!” he says in a loud voice, making Michin jump up on his feet; ready to play around again when hearing the bright voice. “Or that American people are talking about you every week!”

Hannah just laughs at his sudden excitement. It must be good to be a child, she thinks when talking to him, seeing how easily excited he gets and forgets all about the worries he just a few seconds ago had on his mind. Though they rarely can see each other they always stay in touch; Kyung Ho always keeping Hannah updated on how it is in school, if he has done well on a test or if he just wants to talk and Hannah keeps him updated on many things too, at times just contacting him to know what he is doing and such.

Kyung Ho has been spending almost a year going on auditions now, wanting to be a child actor. He once told Hannah that he wants to be just as handsome and a great actor as Lee Minho after watching a drama of him. Hannah had nodded and told him he can do it if he wants, and though Hannah herself gets tons of love-calls for dramas and acting roles, Kyung Ho has never wanted her help to get an audition. She helps him to find out about the auditions, to let him know what there is out there, but she has never showed to anyone that she knows the little boy just because he has his pride – he wants to get famous without connections of his friends or money, he wants to get famous for his talent – and Kyung Ho is taking acting classes too, doing very well on his own. A clever boy, Maria said proudly. And he is. He has rich parents, both parents working so much and not even when their son was at the hospital for several months because of a disease that risked his life they had much time to come visit him. Kyung Ho got so happy when Hannah came, though her life was in a critical situation too, he still felt better with her there. They became siblings during their hospital stay together, and a year later when he had to go back to the hospital it was Hannah’s worried face by his bed that made him tell himself that he has to get better. Around that time he made the decision to become an actor too, to become someone in this world. He is a fighter, Hannah admires that, and she is sad that he doesn’t have many friends in school or a warm family to go home to, but Kyung Ho is always smiling when he is with her so she is happy too.

“Will you still call me when you are in Japan?” Kyung Ho pouts when he has to leave. He both looks and sounds sad when looking up at Hannah. He doesn’t like that she is going away to Japan; it isn’t about that he can’t see her, since she has been so busy in Korea that they haven’t been able to meet much anyway, but that she will be in another country and they won’t be able to contact each other as much.

“Have I ever failed you?” Hannah asks him with her eyebrows raised, smiling when he does and she puts her arms around him for a hug. He is to her elbows, maybe even a little taller than that, but he is petite in her arms and she hugs him with her eyes closed. She has two younger brothers in Sweden who are a year older than Kyung Ho, and they were so tall when Hannah last saw them. Kyung Ho keeps going up and down in his weight due to his hospital visits and medicine, but Hannah has kept in touch with the nurse who treats him to know that he is much better than what he was a year ago. Kyung Ho smiles when hugging her, closing his eyes too. He likes to have a sister, even if they aren’t related by blood; it feels like the world is safer to know that he always will have Hannah there to care for him.

Kyung Ho laughs when Emelia runs inside the hall to give him a hug and to tickle him, and he nods happily like a child when Emelia promises she will take him along to Japan sometime so he can see the nice apartment they have gotten with the view of Tokyo Tower.

He is 5 Pieces’ Korean little brother. Hannah’s members actually knew him before Hannah, as she was in a coma when her members came to visit her and Kyung Ho would be there. Hannah has never talked to her members about everything that she felt and remembers from the car-accident and from the hospital, but somehow they seem to know the importance Kyung Ho has for her. He was the only one there with her at the hospital almost 24/7, keeping her mind positive to keep trying to move her stiff body. They were there for each other, and Hannah thinks some of his positivity has entered her.

When Kyung Ho has left, Hannah finishes the last packing and gets ready to leave. She brings along the bag Maria hadn’t taken along to her ‘We Got Married’ filming and they will meet up at the airport. The four members at the apartment as well as their managers are packing up for the airport, and before leaving Hannah and the manager makes sure everything are turned off in the apartment. In a week, they will be back for a few days, and when first walking out of the apartment, Hannah longs for the short return.

Hannah is wearing a pair of beige faux-fur lining lace-up boots with a 9cm heel; a pair of boots that their stylist had bought with her money as Hannah neither have the time to buy her own new shoes nor does she know what looks good, so he helped her like he loves to do for the members. To the beige boots that definitely fits her well and she loves, she is wearing a pair of black skinny jeans to a leopard pattern knit top that is long and big but still nicely rests down on her shapes without showing off her body much at all. She likes to wear big clothes; if she is wearing something big on her upper-body she tends to wear something tight on her legs and vice versa. Hannah has the jacket in her hand when she is at the airport, her bag hanging over her shoulder and cell phone in hand as she has been texting with Kyung Ho ever since he confirmed to have gotten home safely, and to her long blonde hair she is wearing a beanie she hasn’t put on completely so it is just resting slightly at the top of her head and Hannah always over-worries about the small things which means she worries it will fall off whenever she turns her head to the side.

There aren’t a lot of fans at the airport, which it isn’t always when you are leaving Korea – mostly just when you are returning – but there are always reporters everywhere. Hannah sticks close to her members when they are at the airport and since the place isn’t crowded with fans it feels more relaxed like you don’t have to get as small as you can and just rush through the airport but you can calmly walk to your destination in there and not have to think of accidentally pushing someone since no one is there.

“When’s Maria coming?” Hannah wonders when they get to the escalator.

“She will be here soon. But she is filming ‘We Got Married’ so you will get on the plane first,” Manager Lee answers and puts his hand on Hannah’s back for her to step forward. He makes sure the ladies get on the escalator before him for some reason.

Maria is filming with her ‘We Got Married’ husband Kwon Hyunsuk of them today saying goodbye at the airport for Maria’s activities in Japan. Hannah hasn’t gotten a text message like she usually gets but from what their managers have been saying, Maria first filmed at the house location for the program before they will head to the airport.

A fan is riding the escalator behind them, being held on a distance because of Manager Lee being in the way, but Hannah still turns around when hearing her name being called in a low voice. When being noticed the fan’s eyes goes huge and she reaches over gift bag, reaching it out next to Manager Lee as she can’t reach it further and Hannah asks if it is to her. The fan nods like crazy, asking her to please accept it, which Hannah does with a smile and she thanks the fan before they have reached the top of the escalator. Manager Lee makes Hannah start to walk while she is glancing through the content of the gift bag. Her smile grows when seeing that it is things to help her study Japanese, and when seeing it she wants to thank the fan again so she looks up in search for her, happy to see that the girl is still following them.

“Thank you,” Hannah tells her with a motion to the gift bag.

“You saw?” the fan shines up brightly. “I know your Japanese is good, but in case it would be helpful. And I will cheer you on from here! Good luck!”

“It will be helpful, thank you.”

Hannah’s final smile to the fans makes the girl giggle shyly and though Hannah would like to take a closer look on the gifts she just received, she has a plane to board. The line of people in front of her is short but she still stops closely behind Julia, the short-haired girl who turns around to talk to her when knowing Hannah is standing there.

“You got it too?” Julia asks when seeing the gift bag Hannah is holding. “I got one too. Not as small as that one, but I guess our fans want me to study more than you.”

“I bet our teacher would love these if we bring them to class on Monday,” Hannah comments with a smile over the thought. Julia smiles too, but then remembers something.

“Are we changing teacher?” she grimaces.

Hannah shrugs her shoulder. Their Japanese teacher so far has been working for SM Entertainment, at SM Entertainment, but now when 5 Pieces will attend classes to learn Japanese in Japan and not in Korea, they don’t really know what will happen with their teacher. Since none of them knows the answer to Julia’s question, they look at their manager standing behind Hannah, asking the same question.

“The teacher you have will come back and forth to Japan for the classes,” he answers in a bored tone, nodding then for Hannah and Julia to prepare their passports to board the plane as it is their turn.

The flight to Japan goes fast. It always goes fast because it isn’t as long as some of the flight times the ladies usually have to take. It’s that you can watch one movie and you have arrived: Which is what Hannah does. She watches a movie while going through some Japanese and promotion facts for their single [Sleeper], and then gets off the plane. Of course this airport is crowded. Reporters – both Koreans and Japanese – and fans are there to welcome 5 Pieces, because though the girl-group comes and goes a little now and then between Korea and Japan, but there are always people there to welcome them and to wave goodbye. Therefore, due to security, 5 Pieces gets out through the back.

5 Pieces goes to the apartment right away, to spend the late evening by getting comfortable in their extra home and also to let their pets get familiar with the strange place too. The girls keep laughing over how excited their three pets are over this new place, giving the pets more attention this evening. Maybe because it is important that their pets like the place, because honestly, 5 Pieces can probably survive living anywhere as long as they have a good space to sleep on; so it is all up to their pets. And all three of them seem to be pretty satisfied with the place after looking around at every corner and room – just like the ladies did at their first time there – and the ladies starts to relax too. Hannah sits down in the amazingly cosy sofa they have in the living-room, opening bags and gifts that their manager has dragged in. There are beds and toys for their pets, to kitten Ace and puppies Michin and Ryo – a lot of things for the pets to like the new place.

“Shouldn’t you all be speaking Japanese by now?” their manager asks when he is getting ready to go to the small apartment that the two male managers are sharing.

“We can start that tomorrow,” Julia laughs, not wanting to do that at all.

They have a rule: speak the language of the country you are in. When 5 Pieces go to Sweden, they speak Sweden; when they are in Korea, they speak Korean, when they go to Japan they are supposed to speak Japanese… It is to learn the languages, so if you want to say something but doesn’t know how to say it in the language of the country you are in, you have to look it up and that way you learn better. Manager Lee’s Japanese is good, and the other manager – Song Yoon Jun, is the manager who earlier have joined in during 5 Pieces schedules in Japan and for that is with them now too – speaks Japanese fluently. The two managers were chosen due to their Japanese skills, which leaves Manager Lim (Appa) back in Korea, where he can take some rest and also help out with other artists from time to time. He is another reason to why the ladies will miss Korea. With managers speaking Japanese, 5 Pieces are supposed to do it too, and though they do take classes and practice, they still have problems to actually keep a conversation on-going. Hannah and Emelia are good at it though; doing Japanese dramas are definitely good if you want to learn a new language.

Their manager sighs over Julia’s answer, but he still sticks to Korean when telling them they should go to bed. “It’s an early morning tomorrow,” he says.

Their managers leaves to go to sleep in their own apartment some floors down, and when they have left, Hannah looks to her left in the sofa where Julia is sitting and hugging one of the white pillows that comes along to the sofa. None of them shows any sign of that they are going to get up. The sofa makes you just sink in and not wanting to move ever again.

“I still think they should have let us go buy the food we have in the kitchen rather than having it all here when we arrive,” Maria is saying from the kitchen while looking through the fridge that is filled with bottles of fresh water, food and the usual. The fridge had been filled up as the rest of the kitchen just before 5 pieces arrival, so the girls who had thought they were going to look at the neighbourhood to go grocery shopping were disappointing when finding out that everything has already been bought. There are towels and toothpaste, washing powder and everything needed for the whole apartment, including food for the pets, had been prepared. Along with 5 Pieces first visit to the apartment they wrote down what would be needed – their manager wrote most things – and the list ended up being very long as it was a grocery list too, but in the end it actually looks like a complete apartment now. They even have new beddings too, and that could be the reason why Hannah doesn’t want to go to bed yet; she has to fix her bed before she can use it as everything is just nicely put on the side of the bed.

Julia thinks the same and even when Carolina calls out from the bedroom that she and Julia are sharing that they can make their beds together like collage roommates, Julia doesn’t move an inch though she answers loudly “Okay!”.

“I’m taking the kids,” Maria is still talking to whoever is listening, and she points over at Hannah who has Ryo lying on the floor by her foot. Maria’s “kids” are their pets, and she had been dragging the pets’ beds in to her room so she will get some company at night as she is having her own room.

“Roomie!” Carolina comes stomping from the hall, stopping her steps when seeing in to the living-room to look a little upset at Julia. “Why aren’t you coming?”

Julia gives out a fake yawn, stretching her hands out tiredly. “Carry me.”

Hannah laughs at the sudden request and just as she thinks about telling Julia “watch out, she might do it”, Carolina actually steps up to the sofa to grab her new roommate’s hands to pull her up on her feet. Hannah watches Carolina struggle to first get a half-asleep pretending Julia out of the sofa and then to make her move her feet one step at a time to get to the bedroom so they can make their beds, while Maria at the same time takes a seat at the end of the sofa and chewing on a piece of yellow pepper as their fridge doesn’t contain any snacks.

“What is ‘pepper’ in Japanese?” Maria wonders, looking at the yellow vegetable in her hand.

“I think it is like in English, but Japanese version,” Hannah answers with a grimace, not really sure about it.

“Peppa,” Maria tries out, but since Hannah doesn’t know Maria just shrugs her shoulders and continues to eat. Ryo has left the spot by Hannah’s foot and is now sitting in front of Maria with his tail sweeping the floor and eyes big, following each hand motion Maria does from to her leg while eating the pepper. “Ryo, you don’t like pepper, so stop.”

She still leans down with the pepper in her hand for him, letting the puppy try to taste it but just by smelling it he seems to remember that he doesn’t like it. It’s an experience to try finding out what their puppies like. Chocolate is like poison, so that’s like the only thing the puppies never can taste, but otherwise the girls tend to see if they like different vegetables and food. Vegetables never seem to be a favourite, and Emelia keeps saying that they must have a great taste because of that.

Since her sofa-friend has left, Hannah gets up too. She drags her feet after her when heading to the bedroom, stopping by the door to peek inside and see Emelia sitting on her bed and unpacking the woman stuff as baby lotion, make-up and such. The baby-face of the group uses baby lotion.

“When are you going to sleep?” Hannah wonders, still not walking inside the room.

“Don’t know,” Emelia mutters and grabs her lotion to look up at Hannah. “Am I supposed to have this in the bathroom? We don’t have a mirror in here.”

Hannah shrugs her shoulders. Personally she won’t keep any things like that so the other members can take it, as Hannah is very sensitive about the things that are “hers”, but Emelia isn’t as sensitive about it. Emelia looks back down at her things, starting to apply the lotion on her self.

“Maybe we can ask if we can get some mirror to put on the wall or something, and some shelf too,” Emelia mutters and Hannah just nods before walking inside to make her bed ready.

Hannah’s bedding is the same as Emelia’s; simple dark blue and though both beds have two pillows and a quilt in the matching plain colour, the two beds looks nothing alike as Emelia has a third pillow that she brought along from Seoul that has a poster picture of some rock artist she likes and she has already put up a poster on the wall following the side of her bed of Emelia – yes, Emelia has a poster of herself from her Japanese mini album last year where she had a rocker concept – while Hannah’s bed has a cute cuddle toy in it and a wine red blanket in micro fleece. Like always these two girls manages to show off their opposites of each other without even meaning to.

Without knowing it the ladies are getting ready for bed. Hannah does her things before lying down in her bed, putting the alarm on her cell phone after thinking through what she has to do in the morning before they are leaving, and she lies there and thinks about how this is going to go. Their time in Japan; they will visit cities all around the country, be on radio and TV, do promotions here and there… What if no one is interested in them? What if there is absolutely no one who even has heard their music, thinks they are good?

Her stomach feels empty and cold when she starts to think about it. Their activities in Japan so far have gone well; they have done a few TV-recordings in Tokyo for [Sleeper], but that’s it. Nothing more. Hannah doesn’t really know much about 5 Pieces popularity in Japan, not as she knows about DBSK and SNSD and other groups who have talked about all the amazing memories they have gotten from their own times in the country. For 5 Pieces, they just come and go. They want to change that. They want to be memorable, become legends somehow, and one day be able to perform with their own concert at Tokyo Dome. That’s their goal in Japan – to take on Tokyo Dome. It’s a long road, but the girls have the time and they don’t really care if it takes two years or twelve to reach it as long as the road there is worth it. They have had many thoughts like that.

A year ago, 5 Pieces were able to have their first solo concert, four years after debut, and it was worth the wait. This must be too.

It took three years since their official debut in Korea for 5 Pieces to release their first single in Japan and worldwide, and it feels good that they have taken some time to do it because if 5 Pieces had released a single in Japan back in 2009, they would probably have disappeared or gotten too tired of learning all these new things about both Korea and Japan at the same time. Now, they have adjusted to Korea, it is their home, before they will try to get a name in Japan.

But the insecure thoughts still won’t leave Hannah when she falls asleep.

The insecure thoughts make her unable to sleep well, and Hannah wakes up before the alarm will set off. Ryo, the little puppy who at the Seoul apartment has a habit of joining Hannah at night had been whining next to her bed an hour after they had gone to sleep, and she picked him up to lie in the bed with her. She woke up again when he had jumped off bed early in the morning and drifts in to sleep though she woke up later the same hour. Tiredly she lies still in bed for a few minutes, unable to go back to sleep, and decides to get up in the end. Usually Hannah can’t sleep if she wears something, but she tends to go to bed in a t-shirt or something before she gets comfortable under the quilt, she takes it off, and this night she surprisingly put the gray and black coloured raglan-sleeve print t-shirt back on. The long sleeves covers her whole hands when she gets up from bed, throwing the quilt aside and hugging her arms to her sides when pulling the already long t-shirt down her legs when getting up after putting on socks.

With half-open eyes she leaves the dark bedroom, pulling her hair away from her face with one fine motion of her hand from her forehead to the back of her head, her hair being pulled along between her fingers.

Hannah goes to use the toilet two meters away from the bedroom, washing her face too before she takes a half-sleeping walk around the apartment, not really sure of what she should do and since it is a place she isn’t really that familiar with she doesn’t know where to go either. No one else seems to be awake, beside from Ryo who came running the moment he heard someone being awake. He is following her, looking to be anticipating something. Hannah walks over to the bar kitchen to check today’s schedule. It’s Sunday the 3rd of February, which means on the schedule that they have a photo shoot, TV recording, interviews and then in the evening they will perform on Music Japan. Hannah sighs tiredly and rounds the bar kitchen to get to the kitchen part of the room, opening the fridge to look through what they have to see if she can figure out what to eat for breakfast but in the end walks away without eating.

“Do you need to go out?” Hannah asks Ryo when seeing the puppy rush towards the entrance door when Hannah walks through the corridor. Dogs are good with habits and routines, and it is the same with words. They learn well, so the same with how they learn to sit when hearing the word ‘sit’ they also know what ‘go out’ means if they learn it. Ryo and Michin both seems to know what it means as also Michin comes walking out from Maria’s bedroom over Hannah’s question.

The girl goes inside the bedroom to pull on some pants, seeing Emelia rolling around in her bed. Emelia glares at her cell phone to see what time it is when noticing Hannah getting dressed, and when Emelia finds it a good time to get up, Hannah asks her if she wants to go out with the puppies. Of course she does; Emelia pulls on the same clothes she wore yesterday and they get out of the apartment. Hannah holds the leashes for both Michin and Ryo when going to the elevator, waiting for Emelia to come and tiredly they ride down. It is their first time going outside like this in Japan actually, though it is just to let the puppies get a chance to do their business. They walk up and down the street, being gone for ten or fifteen minutes, and the fresh morning air wakes them all up a little.

“What are you eating for breakfast?” Hannah wonders when they are back in the elevator, going up to the tenth floor. She is holding Ryo in her arms now.

“I don’t even remember what we have,” Emelia answers in her low voice, still sounding tired. They haven’t really said much to each other, both tired.

“There are eggs. I want eggs.”

“Make me two.”

“Should I make for the others too?”

“Don’t know.”

They get inside the apartment and Hannah goes to prepare some boiled eggs. She peeks inside the first bedroom, in a quiet voice asking if they want eggs for breakfast. Julia woke up when hearing the door but she has no plans of leaving bed yet, and she says she can take one, and since Carolina is sleeping Julia just tells Hannah to make it for her too – Carolina can always eat. Maria doesn’t react when Hannah tries to ask her, so Hannah stands in the kitchen and wonders if she should make an extra egg for Maria. Neither does she know if their managers will want eggs, so in the end she makes eleven eggs, not knowing if it is enough or if it will be wasted. No eggs can ever be wasted; Hannah could always save it for lunch if they aren’t eaten up for breakfast. Emelia takes a shower and contacts the messages to let them know that Hannah makes eggs for them in case they want some.

“Milk or orange juice?” Julia wonders when going through the fridge.

She had gotten up and is starting to take out all things she knows the members eat for breakfast. Compared to the big Asian breakfasts with rice and soup and a huge big meal, 5 Pieces are often used to just eat something fast and simple to breakfast; which is why Julia takes out cereals, bread and prepares tea.

“Juice,” Hannah answers without taking her attention off the eggs. With a new place she doesn’t know for how long the eggs should be boiling, so she keeps an eye on them while taking out glasses. “Woa, I like these.”

Hannah shows the high glasses to Julia with a smile. The glasses they have in their Seoul apartment are very short, but these are high – Hannah likes that. Julia does a face, saying she likes those in Seoul better.

When the eggs are done, Hannah puts them in cold water, she takes two for herself to eat as they are and a glass of orange juice, sitting by the bar kitchen and eating her breakfast while no one else is there. Julia has jumped in the shower now and Emelia is getting dressed, and by the time they both are done, Hannah is done eating.

With time, everyone is waking up and getting ready for the day. Manager Lee and Manager Song make their appearance too, happily enjoying some breakfast and the ladies come and go as they are getting ready at the same time. Maria doesn’t sit still while eating her breakfast as she goes to get dressed and also goes to grab some Japanese lesson books that they are talking about in the kitchen and while Maria doesn’t even sit down once, Carolina sits throughout the whole breakfast. She eats the fastest and she also eats the most; she actually eats four eggs (how that is possible, none of them understands) along with some bread and milk. Manager Song looks like his eyes are popping out of his head while watching her eat, and she doesn’t even notice it. It is a lot of noise in the apartment; chatting and calling for each other, having fun preparing for the first morning in the new apartment.

Holding on to Michin’s leash, Hannah is one of the first of them to step outside the building. The person standing next to their van is a Japanese woman who has started to shake hands with Manager Lee and Julia, and Hannah smiles when the woman turns to shake her hand too.

“Nice to meet you, my name is Kawayama Tara – you can call me Kawayama-san or if that is too difficult Yama-san – and I am 5 Pieces Japanese manager. I hope we will get along well,” the woman speaks in Japanese when shaking Hannah’s hand. Her hand is firm and small; her eyes are focused just as her voice, a very strict and woman-like voice. Hannah’s first thought of the woman is her mother; strict but still having this caring part, mostly strict.

“Nice to meet you,” Hannah greets in a formal Japanese way.

The new manager turns straight to Carolina who comes next, and Carolina’s first Japanese words is a mess, which makes Hannah explain to the new one that they are still learning.

“Ah, my Korean, bad,” the manager explains, speaking in Korean to let them all understand, though her Korean isn’t good.

“Speak Japanese to them. They have to learn,” Manager Lee tells her in Japanese, and the woman says the same thing she said to Hannah when also greeting Emelia, Maria and Manager Song. And she continues to speak Japanese. Hannah can hear Carolina mumble in Korean that she seems to be a woman in control, and Hannah must agree on it. Just the tone of her voice makes her sound like she is the leader of them all. She is going to be the manager in charge as she is the Japanese person who will know the locations and schedule the best, and will be in charge of talking to reporters about the questions for an interview and such.

Maybe because she is new and wants to know everything, she talks nonstop once everyone have gotten in the van and they starts to head to the photo shoot location. It’s around six in the morning, though it feels like Hannah has been awake for a long time.

“So Hannah’s Japanese is the best?” Manager Kawayama wonders.

Hannah can feel how uncomfortable Carolina is next to her, not knowing everything that the new manager is saying and for that a little lost, while Hannah understands all of it.

“I’m not fluent in Japanese, but I guess I speak a little better than some of the other members,” Hannah answers, not awkward at all speaking Japanese.

“Oh, you sound fluent!” the manager seems impressed but Hannah just shakes her head.

“Hannah’s Japanese is as good as her Korean,” Emelia fills in, also speaking Japanese.

“Eh, both of you sound good!” Manager Kawayama laughs after hearing Emelia’s voice. Hannah and Emelia speaks without really having to think of each and other word, which makes their sentences just fly on fluently. “That’s good, really good. And you are all learning, okay.”

Hannah smiles towards Carolina who asks what the manager is excitedly talking about and Hannah simply says “learning Japanese” and then giggles over Carolina’s questioning face-expression.
