Chapter 12 - Strong Heart 2

Youngest of Pieces: [WHO- I AM] (8)

# STRONG HEART is a talk show or so called "talk battle" show in South Korea. It is hosted by actor Lee Dongwook and MC Shin Dongyeop. Celebrities in South Korea appear on the show to have talk battles and the person who says his/hers story voted with the "strongest heart" wins for that episode.

# MIDNIGHT DREAM is a teenage love music drama that aired at the first half of 2012. The drama was about five friends in a band trying to reach the top and the drama got a lot of attention thanks to singers Honggi and Hannah who had the main roles and also to the cast's constantly shown friendship that was showed in both the scenes/the drama and even when they weren't filming. Just the drama didn't get any awards, but it opened ways for the rookie actors/actresses who received awards for their roles and participations and the drama was chosen as the Five K-Dramas to not miss in 2012.

## Filmed 2013-01-03, Part One airs January 15 and Part Two airs January 22

PART TWO

“During the filming there was just one episode where a dog featured,” actor Hong Suk Chun – who is mostly known for being an openly gay celebrity – who also was part of Midnight Dream as one of the people working in the entertainment agency. “In the episode, all these friends here (the other four cast from the drama) where filming a scene that was being at Hyunsuk’s house, and as the romantic person he was in the drama even if he isn’t here today, his family owned a dog, and I don’t think anyone got as much attention throughout the whole dram as that dog.”

While the cast on Strong Heart nods and laughs at the memory, one of the MCs asks how he knows that, just to make fun of the actor. Hannah laughs when hearing them asks that and the screen does a close-up on Suk Chun’s face-expression.

“You know, I had a really important role in the drama,” Hong Suk Chun tells the MC in a matter-of-fact tone, causing more laughter on the set. “Without me, Midnight D wouldn’t have signed the contract and made it big!”

The laughter goes up even more over his hilarious words about the drama and Hannah joins in clapping while laughing too over his good comeback comment and the MCs asks the actor to continue the story after that everyone have calmed down, asking about the dog.

“Everyone loved that dog,” Suk Chun continues dramatically, making people laugh a little once more. “The dog would just sit there and drool and everyone around were like ‘oh so cute!’ so though that dog appeared in one episode, it got the most attention because whenever there was a break, people were with that dog. But what I want to say is that I hadn’t any scenes to film that day, and I was pretty busy, but I still went buy with some coffee to the staff. And no one paid any attention to me! Hannah was the only one who seemed to notice me, but when I offered her some coffee she said she doesn’t drink it. And during that time, the dog was looking at me while getting all the attention that I and my coffee would get.”

“The staff was addicted to coffee,” actress Hyejong fills in to let people know how it usually was like, “and whenever you said the word ‘coffee’ everyone would come running. But that day… no one cared about coffee.”

Hannah is sitting and nodding while listening to the MCs commenting and some gag woman commenting, Honggi talking about how cute the dog was and Suk Chun saying that was the last time he brought coffee to the staff. She starts to smile when Honggi starts to tell about another episode during the drama filming.

“While we were filming in Japan, all of us stayed at a hotel,” Honggi is telling, “and we came to the hotel late after finishing filming for the day and we were tired and were getting ready to go to sleep, when … Hyejong, gave a call to us.”

Hyejong and Hannah out of nowhere from the others points of view burst out laughing when he mentions the actress, as they both figures out what he is going to reveal.

“Because Hyejong was freaking out over the phone, the three of us – me, Hyunsuk and Mat – went over to the hotel room that Hannah and Hyejong were sharing to find out what was going on. And the girls were in bathrobes, screaming and jumping and they pointed to the bathroom, shouting ‘it’s a spider! Kill it!’!” Honggi explains and he laughs when imitating the girls’ shouts and the others are just laughing over how lively he is telling the story.

No one seems to believe that it was just a spider, and Hyejong turns to the one asking that and shows with her hand to say ‘it was THIS huge!’

“I just laughed when seeing it,” Honggi continues. “But it ended well because Hyunsuk killed the spider and we all went to sleep. But the next day at filming, we kept making fun of them by saying it is a spider here and there…”

“You were so mean!” Hyejong shakes her head with a grimace.

“I don’t know what they have against spiders…”

“They are freaky!”

“Really freaky,” Hannah nods.

“Hannah is a rookie when it comes to acting. Have you ever experienced something like Mat just talked about?” the MCs wonders when Mat have just talked about his first acting experience.

“For me… I had a lot of trouble filming for a Japanese drama, ‘Fist of Victory’,” Hannah says and some people show they know what drama it is. “I had acted briefly in another Japanese drama a few months earlier, but for ‘Fist of Victory’ I had to even change my appearance.”

“Weren’t you doing boxing for that role?” MC Lee Dongwook seems to remember.

“Yes. For about two months I was working out to loose weight and get into shape, mostly through boxing, and during that time I spent about 5-6 days a week at the gym. I really did my best for that role because I liked the character and wanted to do well, but at that time… my Japanese wasn’t good and all the staff spoke only Japanese. So when we started filming my first scene, the director suddenly got angry. He was shouting and pointing and for me, I had absolutely no clue at all what he was saying.”

“How old were you?”

“I was … seventeen,” Hannah answers and nods when the others on set now goes ‘ooh…’. “It was actually a really rough period for me because my members were in Korea and I was in Japan alone, and it had been about … a little over a year since our Korean debut, and the director was really … he seemed angry all the time and I didn’t always understand what I did wrong.”

“You were young and clueless,” the MC nods, understanding the situation she is explaining.

“At first I didn’t know why he kept yelling at me,” Hannah continues, “but one of the Japanese actors – he is a really good actor, Hayami Mokomichi – was really nice to me and he took time to explain that the director had been told by the trainer who had been helping me with the boxing, that I work harder when being pushed.” She smiles when people start to laugh as they understand where this is going. “So the director yelled at me as he thought that would make me do even better and keep my … motivation up, as the trainer had told him that.”

“Did it work?”

“At the gym, it worked because for some reason it made me angry and boxing was a great way to release stress. But when it came to acting… Honestly, it made me loose confidence,” Hannah answers honestly. “Because I didn’t always know what I did wrong and I didn’t know how to do better all the time, so many times I wondered if I really was that bad. But after finding out how it actually was, I wrote a note to the director in Japanese – I looked up how to write it – where I told him that I will try my best each day on the set to satisfy him with my part in the drama and that I would study and learn the whole time, and I thanked him for pushing me.”

“How did he react on that?” the MC is smiling.

“The director…” Hannah giggles, “actually came up to me after the day’s shooting was over and he showed me the note and there were a lot of circles written over certain words… and he said ‘this is written wrong’.”

She smiles when everyone on set laughs.

“But when the drama came to an end, he actually wrote a letter to me,” Hannah fills in, “where he wrote a lot of things that have kept me motivated ever since.”

“Have you met the director recently?”

“Last time I met him… was at a concert last year. He came to a concert we had in Japan and,” Hannah giggles again, “and he said that I had grown up well.”

“Because he had seen you when you were a rookie and now you aren’t even a teen anymore,” the MC nods, understanding it and Hannah nods too, saying bad things can come with a good ending.

Secret’s Ji Eun has been talking about the car accident that happened not long ago to the members of Secret, and Hannah has been listening seriously, biting her lip and nodding from time to time. Her face expression has changed compared to when she has listened to all the happy stories being told and after that Ji Eun has been telling her story, Hannah can feel her own stomach getting nervous.

“Wasn’t Hannah in a serious car accident a few years ago too?” one of the MCs brings up. “Do you remember how it was like?”

She bites her lip again, thinking about it quickly before shaking her head. “I don’t remember anything from the accident, but my members told me about what happened and I watched the clips from the News too…”

“That accident really shook a lot of people,” Super Junior’s Eunhyuk mentions, “I heard at that time; Julia said that if it wasn’t for them wearing seatbelts, they would have gotten more injured.”

“What happened?” the MC wonders, turning to Hannah.

Hannah scratches her at the back of her neck, feeling uncomfortable in her seat but she still starts to talk. “Me, Julia, Maria and our manager were on our way to buy a cake to celebrate my solo debut,” Hannah is explaining, remember how she had been performing [Burning] that same evening on Music Bank more than two years ago, “and it was raining that night, so … um, the road was slippery and the van just went off the road… The van landed up-side-down, and because we wore seatbelts … it was good to wear seatbelts because that apparently saved our lives, but it was also impossible to do anything as we were stuck in it. Maria said only our manager got her seatbelt off, so the rest of us were hanging up-side-down in the van.”

“Mm,” MC Shin Dongyeop says with a nod to let her know they are listening and to let her continue.

“I had hit my head and lost consciousness, but it was dark outside so when the rescue team came to help us out they couldn’t see me alone at the very back and the car had been liked smashed together so the seats were in the way. Maria … when they pulled her out of the van, she tried to tell the rescue crew that I also was in the van, so … if it wasn’t for Maria, they wouldn’t have seen me being unconscious in the back.”

“For how long were you hanging up-side-down like that?”

“For a few hours,” Hannah answers and tries to hold back the tears when hearing everyone around her breathe in over the information, and one of the other guests asks if she was unconscious the whole time. Hannah nods. “I was. I woke up … twelve days after the accident after being in a coma-”

“Twelve days??” people can’t hide their surprise and mouths all around her are opened. But it was over two years ago, back in 2010, and Hannah has already talked to enough people about this so she can talk about it now.

“But the thing is that, since I had been in a coma for so long and before that I had been hanging in the van, my body wouldn’t move when I woke up,” Hannah says and she glances to her right to see that other guests doesn’t really understand. “I couldn’t even lift my finger.”

She demonstrated by lifting her finger, and people around on the set wonders if she really, really couldn’t move at all. Hannah nods when glancing around behind her at the many questions she gets from the other guests on the show.

“All I did when waking up was to cry; it was the only thing I could do,” Hannah answers all the questions she receives from the shocked guests. For what she will say next, she is holding back the tears with all her might. “But… what really, made me cry the most, was when the doctor told me that time that I might… never be able to perform again.” She forces out a smile when seeing how shocked people are; she thinks she even hears someone sobbing, and she adds in a low voice that she think she has never cried so much in her life as she did at that time.

“But the doctor was wrong, right? I mean, you are performing quite a lot…”

“I… Yes, I guess it was wrong.”

“But how did it work? You couldn’t even move your body?” the MCs are curious.

“Two months later, Hannah was on the stage,” Honggi says before Hannah answers the question and more people get shocked over it.

Hannah gives a helpless smile, her shoulders sinking but she is fast to explain what Honggi said; “It was the end of the year and 5 Pieces had for the first time been invited to perform at the year-end shows.” The MCs opening their mouths, slightly understanding, “and even if I didn’t get to perform with my members, it felt important for all of us to be present.”

“You were really fine after just two months…?”

“Honestly, I wasn’t. It’s obvious no one is fine after two months from that kind of a car accident,” Hannah answers, “but I got scared to hear from the doctor that I might not be able to be on stage again and I just told my agency that … no matter what, let me attend with my members. And that is what happened, and I spent every waken moment to try move a part of my body until I could walk on my own.”

“Woaw…”

“But why did the doctor say you might not be able to perform again?” the MC wonders.

Hannah forces out a sad smile again, anew trying to hold back the tears that have gotten visible in her eyes by now. She doesn’t tell the whole truth, and some of the things she has said so far have already been told to the public, but thinking of the truth she doesn’t tell them she tells them things she can tell them. With a glance down at her fingers she notices that she is starting to ruin the nail polish with her nervous habit and she stops on her nails and looks up to answer the question, her tears held back. “After the accident, I had a lot of problems with my body. I couldn’t sit for more than a few minutes at a time at first and I couldn’t sleep because I couldn’t relax my body enough…” she glances down when hearing others giving out noises since none of them probably knew about this, probably just Honggi and Eunhyuk knew about it, and she waits until she knows she won’t start crying to continue talking, “and because, from the accident, the doctor said it would be difficult for me to continue performing because if I work too hard, whether it is in one year or in ten years, my body might not be able to take it.”

“Ah, really…?? But you were still the busiest idol in 2012!”

“Don’t you worry much about that?”

“You shouldn’t work so hard then,” the MCs and guests are telling her and Hannah pouts. She has heard those comments many times.

“Actually,” she breathes out, everyone getting quiet again, interested in the story, “when we made our comeback with [I Love You]… It was our first comeback after the accident, and it was almost a year after it happened-”

“Ah!” MC Shin Dongyeop bursts out, pointing over at her, “I remember there were headlines about you fainting during practice? Was it… …?”

“Yes.” Her answer is short but everyone gets huge eyes again. “I wanted to tell our fans that have been blaming the agency for putting me into so much work, because I think a lot of our fans realised that I hadn’t recovered from the accident at that time and the reason I fainted during practice was because, making a comeback was stressful and we were trying new things and I just wanted to do my best so I pushed myself too hard. In the end the agency announced that I would take a few weeks break from the schedule with 5 Pieces, so I want our fans to not put the blame on the agency because I was the stubborn one; I put the pressure on myself and I didn’t want to fail everyone that waited for the comeback, including myself.”

“Then… are you okay now?”

“I’m fine now,” Hannah smiles sweetly, “I still have days when my back hurts and such, but I feel really good and I want to continue to do my best without overdoing it and … I am looking forward to spend many years on the stage.”

She smiles happily when receiving applause for her words and the MCs tells her they don’t want her to work too hard, and hopes they will keep seeing her amazing performances in the future.

COMMENTS ABOUT STRONG HEART ‘MIDNIGHT DREAM SPECIAL PART 2’

- “While Jieun was talking about the car accident, Hannah looked so sad! She was like ‘I know the feeling’… I have never seen a person looking as troubled as Hannah when she was answering the question after that =(”

- “I always wondered how Hannah lived when she was in Japan for FoV… She seemed to have met a lot of great people there. But it’s easy to know why Hannah is so damn popular in Japan; everyone from that drama must have spoken so well about her ^^ and she is super pretty here!!”

- “Hannah and the Japanese actor still keep in touch. He visited 5 Pieces when they were in Japan last year :D Hihihi”

- “SHE COULDN’T MOVE HER BODY??! WTF did she do on stage two months later?????????????”

- “Am I the only one noticing how EVERYONE there focuses whenever Hannah opens ? The MCs seems really interested in everything she says and Hannah is just a goddess whenever she appears on Strong Heart… kkk She even makes the others cry with her story ;)”

- “T_T I guess all fans are thanking Maria for making sure those men found Hannah left in the van T_T”

- “Twelve days in a coma and two months later she was on stage? Is that even human?”

- “You know what I think: for all 2010, Hannah was going to the gym and she was boxing and her body really changed so much that she was in such a condition that even after the car accident her body was still in a good shape so it was easier for her to get back up on her feet. I like how she has grown from that time and is now an icon of survival and strength along with the other members. Through [I CRY] she really shows that for a girl who had suicide thoughts and was in a life or death situation with that car accident”

- “OMO!!!! The doctor said she might never be able to perform again, but Hannah pushes herself to the edge! She always does that =( I’m actually happy that SM made her take a few weeks off during their second album promotions; just imagine what would have happened if she didn’t take a break!! O_O 5 Pieces forever <3”

- “I’m glad she is okay now :)”

- “I can’t stop thinking about that they actually have dated… Honggi and Hannah… After all this time I have told them from miles away that they should date and then they have already tried -.- Try again!”

- “Midnight Dream should do a second season with this cast, they are all hilarious ^^ Freaking out over a spider, well done! But they were in bathrobes……………… *dirty mind*”

- “5 Pieces’ stories on Strong Heart always makes me cry, but this damn must be too much on me. Hannah is honestly one of the most amazing people on earth, I’m a huge fan and admirer over everything she does. It’s no wonder I CRY is so emotional. A beautiful song from a beautiful soul~”

In 2010, Friday on October 22, Hannah had been performing on Music Bank with her solo debut single [Burning]. That was the first time she won on a music program with a solo song, and it was the only one she was present to receive for that song. To celebrate the first win for a member with solo activities, the group had decided to celebrate it once their schedules were over for the day. Emelia was dropped by at SM Entertainment to practice for her own solo song that she just had started to promote, and Carolina had been dropped by at the radio for MBC where she was the duo DJ with B2ST’s Doojoon – a great duo.

Manager Kim – their female manager Kim Sung Young – was driving the van with Julia and Maria sitting behind her and at the back, Hannah had been sitting. It was raining that evening, that night, when the four of them were going to buy cake for the simple celebration. It had been celebration in the van too; they were singing to all kind of songs, ballads and pop songs while cracking their voices and laughing so much.

The rain made the road slippery, and Maria had cried out at their manager when the van slipped with the front wheels on the road, just a little. But then it came again, stronger; much, much stronger. The van went off the road, and instead of getting stopped by the verge on the side of the road the van started to tumble down the ditch. Once the ground got flat under it, the van stopped tumbling – landing up-side-down, in the black rain with the road up the ditch with people stopping their cars and voices calling out. Many calls with the same message went to alarm the police and ambulance, everyone calling for help. The whole van was ruined, glass broken with the smashed windows.

It took time for the police and ambulance to reach them as the road is blocked by the cars that have stopped as many owners of the cars had run down to try help the survivors.

Reporters had arrived when Julia was brought out of the van, and the people present that were lightening up the dark place with their flashlights looked at each other while whispering; “isn’t she from 5 Pieces?”

Thirty minutes later, Maria was pulled out of the van. It was difficult to know where they could touch as they didn’t know where she was injured and to get rid of the seatbelt she was stuck in up-side-down took its time too, but once she was out they could take a closer look to see that she wasn’t too seriously injured. It was black outside and the rain had drained all the people from the rescue team and the others who had wanted to help out, the only helpful light were the flashlights in their hands. It was a miracle they found a fourth girl in the van. She was stuck in the back of the van, the seats that Julia and Maria had been sitting in crushed in the way for the rescue team to first find her, but one of the men had seen Maria point there while she was crying and he had turned his flashlight towards the seats, glimpsing something in the back.

Hannah had been unconscious the whole time, and she was the only one staying unconscious. Both of the other members got out with just small injuries, the manager had gotten hurt a little more and then it was Hannah who stayed unconscious for twelve days.

The other members continued their schedules. Carolina had her radio and Emelia was promoting a solo song, but every time they got they would go to the hospital. Manager Lim Appa went with them every time, and he went there on his own too to keep an eye on the girl at the hospital. The news about the accident was horrible. Fans would sit outside the hospital with signs asking Hannah to get better, some even sitting there and pray as it was rumoured she was in a life or death situation.

What made Maria scream at the doctor once was when he informed them that she might never wake up from the coma due to Hannah’s previous depression and suicide thoughts. Maria had first gotten furious as she didn’t know the Korean terms the doctor was using, and she then got an outburst to say that Hannah would never leave them. The members would sit next to Hannah’s bed and tell the sleeping girl about their days, as they all had heard people in a coma can still hear them.

It must have been true. After the coma, Hannah kept having memories of hearing things. She could never sort out what she had heard and when she had heard it and rarely knew who talked to her, all she knows is that she remembers pieces of something from that time. Someone was reading books to her; familiar music would be played as fans and the members kept CDs on the bedside table for the nurses to play for her at times (to remind her); voices would talk to her in happy voices and in crying voices; someone held her hand…

Even two years later, Hannah still has back problems. She must exercise and take medicine, twice a year visit the hospital for a check-up and if she has a lot of concerts there are personal doctors on place for her. But the doctor’s prediction went wrong, and that makes him as well as the agency worrying. Hannah is happy though, that she has gotten a second chance. Even if she might fall apart tomorrow, she doesn’t want to regret what she did today.
