Chapter 22

Youngest of Pieces: [WHO- I AM] (8)

Wednesday is spent in Korea, which also tomorrow Thursday will be when 5 Pieces is doing a skin care event in Seoul and then in Incheon. Today, Maria is filming We Got Married (yesterday she did it too for a photo shoot together with her “husband”, but today it is a filming to celebrate their 100 days marriage) and Hannah has a book meeting; it is already the seventh meeting and today they are deciding on the book cover and just overall confirmation of the book. What the other three members are doing is different; Emelia and Julia are together recording a show as guests and then Carolina is recording for another show.

Before Hannah had her book meeting she went to the hospital for her 6-months check-up. Ever since the car-accident in 2010, Hannah used to go to the hospital once every month to make sure her health is okay, because she was working the whole time so her health went up and down. Last year they decided to just have the check-up every six months; a doctor still follows abroad during concerts. Hannah’s health hasn’t been good since the car-accident because of back pains and more, and probably also because she always have something on her schedule so the doctor always tells Hannah whenever they meet that she should take it easier or maybe take a few days break. The agency have also tried that, but then Hannah decided to release a book so during the days Hannah is supposed to have the day off she has a meeting instead. With a stubborn personality, as long as Hannah says she can do it, the agency won’t force her to take rest – beside from once during their second album, and that was awful.

Today when Hannah visits the hospital, the doctor says that she is getting her strength back in her body – which is good since it has been two years already.

Hannah’s frequent visit to the gym and current working out is helping her body to get in shape; not that kind of “great body shape” that most idols look for but a shape that makes her body strong and simple the strength that is healthy and makes her actually able to stand up without feeling pain somewhere. After the car-accident Hannah wasn’t allowed to go much to the gym, and if she was there she wasn’t able to really do much because what her body needed was to slowly adjust after the accident, so last year when Hannah finally were told she can start work out so it actually makes a difference, Hannah ran to the gym.

Last year during her [Butterfly] promotion, and also at their solo concert, people seemed to take a lot of notice of Hannah’s stomach and body.

A big difference of 5 Pieces and other girl-groups is that 5 Pieces haven’t really ever wore clothes that reveals their stomachs (Maria always shows off her long legs because she is the long-legged leader and Carolina maybe had some outfits that showed her stomach a bit) but with the charismatic look and the fact that 5 Pieces didn’t use to have these “idol bodies” they didn’t get to wear those kind of clothes. Mostly Hannah because she was much overweight during their debut and even after loosing weight she has had the image of being the youngest, and because Hannah hates to show off her body. During [Butterfly] she wore tops that had small lace details that would show off just a little bit of her stomach, just a little bit, that was called “a tease” by fans and also the stylists.

But 5 Pieces is slowly breaking out from their “full clothing” style. According to the agency, 5 Pieces will break out from that during this year’s concerts – maybe starting with 5 Pieces’ First Arena Tour in March. Hannah still doesn’t know what kind of clothes they will wear in the tour starting in less than thirty days, but she does know that she might have to wear a huge shirt with bare legs because everyone working on the concert are telling her that [I CRY] have to be performed.

Hannah doesn’t think it is a must to perform [I CRY] on the concert, but just a little twitch in her face when it is mentioned makes the others burst out that they have to perform the song that became one of the best songs of 2012. Hannah is in denial about her solo song’s popularity just because she is more into the group’s popularity rather than her own, though she does love the song. Performing it is still … she is insecure about it and every performance makes her emotional when seeing how the audience is reacting.

So no matter what Hannah has to say about it, she is going to perform [I CRY] at the arena tour.

How she will perform it is yet unknown, which is why Hannah goes to the music room at SM Entertainment after the book meeting.

Maria has been texting from the recording room, saying she wants alcohol, begging Hannah to come with her for some rebelling when they both are done. But Carolina texts Hannah too, saying she wants to do something too after her TV recording is over. Hannah texts them back and say the three of them can do something; Carolina maybe doesn’t like drinking but Maria’s idea is to drink and talk, and Hannah knows that Carolina always is in for talking.

But before they will go for that, Hannah sits down in the music room. She sits by the computer in there, starting it and wondering how she would like to perform [I CRY] in front of their Japanese fans. After the arena tour, 5 Pieces will have their concert tour around Asia, and Hannah will apparently perform the song there too; so Hannah wants to have a performance of the song on the arena tour that she can do on the concert tour too. Just one concert version.

The computer starts to play her song; her bag put on the table next to the computer catches her eyes as there is a small camera there. Her manager had given it to her, just like all the members have gotten one. She doesn’t know what they should be recording for, but their managers have said that the agency wants them to record a little of this and that and bring it wherever they go. With a deep sigh she takes out the camera from her bag, holding it in her hands and listening to her song. She sighs again. She isn’t good at recording things, she is boring and most of the time emotional, but even if it won’t be useful for others she can still record now so she can remember the versions of [I CRY] that she will try out and imagine for the concerts.

With a third sigh she puts up the camera on the shelf right above the computer, having a good height and angle and she makes sure she can see herself in it before starting to record. Ignoring the camera first, she starts to press the keys on the computer, keeping her eyes on the computer screen. What she does is taking up a live performance of [I CRY]. While watching the video she wonders if she will have someone playing the piano with her, or if the band will play it or how they will do.

She scratches the back of her neck a little, having so many questions of how she wants to perform the song. Hannah writes down ideas in her pad, writing that she wants the performance to not put her on a distance from fans but more of a performance where she can be close to them, and also giving examples on how she can make an entrance. But just the song, she has absolutely no idea of how to perform. A vocal version, a remix or acapella or how should she do it? Just perform how it is; Hannah thinks will be boring for the audience.

Hannah starts to sing to the song playing, starting off singing as the audio is before she starts to try out different vocal changes. But when not thinking she is getting anywhere, Hannah looks at the camera. She touches it slightly while thinking what language she is supposed to use. Confusion always hits her when it comes to languages. Cameras filming backstage used to be just Korean before, but now it is English, Swedish and Japanese too. It should be Swedish because that is where she comes from and no one would think it is weird if she speaks Swedish, but that language doesn’t feel as natural to her anymore like English and Korean is. Her head thinks in English and Korean, daily uses Korean, but in front of cameras she always gets confused of what language to use.

The girl isn’t wearing any make-up; her skin pale as it is used to wear make-up and her eyes are clear, and the long blonde hair that had gotten black locks after last week’s promotional video filming is just simply hanging down without any hairspray or being styled other than she brushed it in the morning. An old cardigan is covering up her body. The camera captures her well anyway, a simple idol. Hannah is embarrassed easily, especially over herself, but if she wears make-up or not during her time off stage is nothing she cares if others see, as she easily said is too tired to care of that. Hannah has never been in to fashion or followed the look of others; she wears what she feels to wear and about make-up she would love to not wear it unless stylists puts it on just because she would find it useless. Stylists mean to her that it is an important thing to look good. Now when sitting in the music room and waiting to go home, Hannah has no reason to look good – even if she is an idol. But for some reason, from other people’s point of view, she looks good anyway. That is unless she hasn’t showered and is wearing gross clothes; which Hannah never does. She has a line she doesn’t cross even if she isn’t interested in it.

“I am confused,” Hannah admits to the camera in a low voice, using Korean and the music playing even lower, “[I CRY] is supposed to be performed at the concert, but I don’t know how to perform it. Its still 30 days left, but we have a lot to do and I know I won’t get anywhere unless I start in time… I want to have my own ideas for the performance, like having a bunch of different stages for one and same song and I will like each version so much that others will have to decide the best one. Or if they have a better one, that’s fine too. But I want to be prepared with my own ideas…”

Hannah breathes out, her eyes being somewhere else.

“This is my song. They said I need to think like that. And it is my song, and the audience’s song. Which is why I think so much about it,” Hannah says in her low voice. “My head is blank.”

She pushes the camera a little back, though it already shows her from top to waist where the desk cuts her body off, and she starts to play the song again, turning up the volume a little to sing it loudly. The chair turns around once while she sings and she then stands up to sing more powerful, trying out different versions to sing the song again, and she doesn’t care at all that the camera captures just glimpses of her at time to time when she is standing up and singing, walking around. Though the song comes to an end, Hannah continues to sing without music. She tries out some adlibs and imagines herself standing on the stage, standing close and near to the audience that are listening to her voice.

Imagination is the key, Hannah has written that for the second book. Imagination is the key to her life; to write, to perform, to learn, to love and laugh and cry and feel emotions, to show reactions and imagine of how a performance can look like, of so many things. It was Maria who told her to put it there. Hannah had written imagination is the key on some napkin during their [Black & White] activities, and Maria had asked her about it, and when hearing the reason behind it, Maria said it would be amazing if she put it as some kind of quote in the book – not being part of the book, but just a blank page with it written before the actual book starts. And it is going to happen.

When sitting down by the desk again, Hannah starts to talk to the camera anew in a low voice.

“I wrote this song thinking about when I felt life was absolutely nothing for me. I wondered what the difference would be for me to live and to die – and I know that is a horrible thought, but I still had it in my head all the time – and I honestly didn’t care what happened with me,” Hannah admits slowly, shaking her head, “When writing the song I thought of my days at home when I would go take walks after it had gotten dark. I loved it. I could cry if I wanted and no one could see it, and I would walk by the road nearby my home and I caught myself many times thinking of a car – lights coming towards me … – how my life could end in just a second if that car drove to the side or something. It was horrible thoughts and I wrote this song thinking of that and remembering that … if I had stepped out in front of a car or somehow hurt myself, I would not be sitting here today. I wouldn’t have been part of 5 Pieces or been able to spend my life this way. And that is why I wrote [I CRY]; to remind myself and maybe also others that even if you want to cry and you do cry, don’t ever do something that isn’t worth it. Life is not a toy. It is far from easy to live a life, while taking your life is easy. I think like that, because no matter how pointless it can feel, you just need to be a little stronger to go through it.”

Her voice becomes a whisper towards the end. Surprisingly she doesn’t feel like crying, doesn’t get teary like she usually gets; all she does is to look at the computer screen when she has said all that.

After a few seconds silence she starts to play the song again, singing along to the ballad that was released a year ago.

Maria calls when she is done recording a song and Hannah finishes up in the music room to head home together. Their manager just sends them home before he goes home to sleep at his own place, and the two girls go out with the puppies on a walk and also let the pets eat their dinner, eating their own dinner too and they change clothes (Hannah puts on a little make-up) before leaving after being home for quite some time – not being in a rush. A taxi brings them to pick up Carolina who was the one announcing that her recording to be over before heading out. With the help of the taxi driver, the three members of 5 Pieces arrive to a club that at this early hour is still a restaurant, and when noticing that it is a pretty good place to just sit down and talk they go inside.

Hannah and Carolina sits down around the small round table nearby the bar, not feeling any need to sit by the bigger tables. A few middle-aged people are sitting around at the now restaurant, some men are watching a game on one of the TV screens on the wall while two women sitting nearby the ladies are eating dinner. Maria was supposed to go buy drinks, but she is waving Hannah over. Hannah hurries there but walks back to the table to get her passport as her ID to the bartender. If the bartender just wants to make sure they are of the right age or if he is just fooling with them – because obviously, all eyes in there have turned to the ladies at least four times since they entered two minutes ago – Hannah doesn’t either bother or cares, as she just shows her ID before getting her drink that Maria nicely pays for and the girls goes back to the table where Carolina gets a surprise to see Maria giving her a Coca Cola. Both Hannah and Maria have a sour drink; Maria ordered, and after taking a sip through the straw Hannah admits it is really good.

They just sit there and talk; talking about their Japanese promotions, about Maria’s “husband” experience and her family’s comments about it. Maria’s sisters have watched the show; her sisters wondering why Maria doesn’t call them on the show or show off pictures of them – Maria promises to “show off” her sisters next time filming. A lot of people if they heard the girls talking would think they only talk about work. Performances, schedules, where they are going tomorrow and what they did yesterday; but this is in fact their lives. The talk about work is just what they do; they don’t have other things to talk about. Their families in Sweden can have things happening and the ladies share those things with each other, but though the girls talk about everything, their “everything” isn’t really much more than their lives as 5 Pieces. It’s not like they are complaining, since they have chosen to live like this and they love it, but other people might find it sad.

“Did you see the article?” Maria asks when she comes back to the table with her third drink. Hannah has just finished her first.

“Depends on which one,” Carolina is fast to joke, smiling at it and Hannah gives a giggle.

Maria gives her a disliking glance though, probably not finding it as a joke but then again she is the only one knowing what article she means. “Some entertaining news program in America said that we are playing around in Korea,” Maria seriously says and she sighs annoyed when none of her two friends understands. “They were saying that since we are from Sweden, we took the easiest way to success by coming to a small country like South Korea where groups are debuting all the time. It’s easy to become someone here than in America, so on the program they said we are just playing around here while waiting to expand and pass Korea.”

“Seriously?” Hannah looks confused.

“But that’s ridiculous,” Carolina grimaces when Maria gives a nod.

“I know! But it has been talked about the whole day. Pete was making fun of me during the recording; asking where we are going next. And it is seriously making me insane. If we were ‘playing around’, shouldn’t we take the first plane away from here when getting all those love-calls?”

“I don’t get why they keep bringing up lies and strange things,” Carolina is shaking her head, drinking a little from her Coca Cola.

“Maybe because they can’t understand why we would go from Sweden to Korea instead of trying in America where the music industry is world known?” Hannah answers with a shrug of her shoulders.

“Yeah, but they don’t have to be rude just because they are stupid,” Maria complains. “First they say we are wannabe’s, and then that we are the future, then that we are playing around? Why do they have to put us in bad days? Our fans maybe won’t believe them, but think about people that just have heard our music and doesn’t really know 5 Pieces – they can easily be fooled.”

“Have you checked any comments about it?” Carolina wonders, now getting worried after Maria’s words. What if their future fans will hate them based on lies the media creates?

“I saw some comments, and there were some haters and others said they can’t believe such idiocy but still, there were a lot of comments that I don’t want to read again if it is about us,” Maria sighs and removes the straw to drink straight from the glass. “A whole bunch of idiots works in media.”

“I’ll go get another drink,” Hannah mutters and get up, bringing with her money only. When reaching the bar, she asks for a sour drink, and the bartender asks if she wants the same as ‘her’ (he gives her a nod towards the table she comes from) and Hannah knows it is Maria he means. Maria had gotten something else for her third drink, and Hannah tells the bartender she can take the same – but with less alcohol.

When Hannah comes back to the table, Maria and Carolina are laughing. The subject has changed, obviously, and when Hannah sits down the subject changes again when Maria asks Hannah what they said at today’s hospital visit.

“It went like usual. The doctor asked if I am eating well,” Hannah answers and takes a sip of her drink. This one is good too. “He asked that because he could actually see my body being in a better shape than when I haven’t been eating much.”

“You eat well these days,” Carolina sounds surprised and Maria laughs over the sound.

“I work out a lot these days too,” Hannah nods, looking happy. “The doctor said I am getting much better now compared to how it was a year ago.”

“That’s great!” Maria laughs and raises her hand for a high-five, which Hannah gives her. “But can you drink alcohol while working out? My sister said she can’t drink if she is working out…”

“That’s when you are trying to loose weight or build muscles,” Hannah corrects. “My sister does the same. But she still drinks. Wine and disgusting things; which don’t help her try to loose weight. But your sister doesn’t need to loose weight…”

“If you are sister to Maria, I guess loosing weight can’t help,” Carolina mutters and the girls laugh because that means that no matter how much Maria’s sister looses weight, she can never get skinnier than Maria.

After sitting there and talking for almost two hours, Maria has gotten enough to drink and the place is filled with probably more people that heard 5 Pieces is there than people who are there to party, but Maria doesn’t seem to notice so she asks the ladies if they want to check out the dance floor below. She asked it the moment the music started to play at the club, and a stair below it is the dance floor while up here it is the restaurant. So … the girls head downstairs, handing in their jackets before checking in the almost empty dance floor. It is just a few girls there, not many people at all though upstairs is crowded, but that doesn’t seem to stop Maria who goes to the bathroom before rushing to the dance floor. Loud music is playing and smoke comes out and the girls are dancing. Maria takes a lot of space as there aren’t a lot of people on the dance floor, while Carolina is making strange dance moves and even copying some k-pop dances like T-ara’s [Roly-Poly] while Hannah is mostly just jumping and moving around. Hannah has taken three drinks, not even a little bit feeling alcohol in her system; while Maria admitted when they were heading down that she is drunk. Not that drunk, Hannah thinks, as Maria acts very much like she does in daily life – and Hannah has seen Maria drunk; this isn’t that.

But they have fun. A few more people come, dancing to the music and Hannah disappears to use the bathroom before returning and dancing with her friends some more before way too many people are coming and most of them are having cell phones pointed towards the girls and some boys even tries to dance with them or just looks at them in a creepy way. Two girls come to dance with the ladies after a while too, happily joining in and Maria of course happily dances with them before it gets too much.

Hannah is the one suggesting them to go home, and the other two members have absolutely nothing against it. They get their things and head upstairs, walking out from the club with people following them and people standing outside too. Carolina hugs Hannah’s arm when they have pulled on their jackets while Maria is trying to call for a taxi. It is loud around them so Maria is covering one ear when calling, walking in front of the other two who are following her like tails. They stick close to each other because there is a commotion around them, cell phones taking pictures and filming and people calling out their names, asking if they had fun, if they drank, saying they are hot, asking if they are going home or to another party. The ladies don’t answer any questions. They quietly stand next to each other while waiting for the taxi, chatting in low voices and checking their cell phones. Maria had fixed an alibi for their manager by saying stylist Yong Hyun was taking them to check out some new clothes he had gotten, and Hannah had been the one calling him to make sure he can hold up that alibi. Their managers haven’t asked anything and according to the two ladies at home, no one has asked. Their managers just want to know when they are going home, so Maria texts their manager to inform they are heading home now just for him to know that.

Everyone standing outside the club and down the street starts to applause when the ladies step inside the taxi, for what reason they don’t know, but to not let the taxi driver know what they are saying during the ride home the ladies are speaking Swedish.

It is still a successful night. Maria got to drink, Carolina got to talk, Hannah got to spend some time with them without working and all three of them had fun even if they had to leave because of the amount of people filming them.

“Appa will kill us if he sees those videos,” Hannah sighs when they are in the elevator on the way up to the apartment.

“Don’t worry. Tomorrow after all the events, we are heading back to Japan. So as long as he won’t find out before that, we are alright,” Maria says – because Manager Lim (Appa) doesn’t come along to Japan. “But we had fun, right?”

“We had fun!” Hannah and Carolina happily answers and they laugh, repeating the same thing a few times in funny voices.

“Good morning,” Hannah greets in Japanese and lowers her head when entering the practice room in Japan. The first thing she had seen when coming through the door was a camera next to the door filming 5 Pieces entering, and when continuing to walk inside the room her back keeps bending and she repeats the greeting to the others in the room.

The dance practice room in Japan is on the building’s second floor and it is huge with even a band’s instruments in one corner, a table at another corner and mirrors along one wall and some windows by the shorter wall next too. There aren’t many dancers there now; a few have arrived early to warm up, but the morning practice is actually with the band.

Its Monday again, a few days has passed with 5 Pieces recording songs and spending a whole day doing photo shoots in Japan, and today the girls are spending the whole day practicing for their first arena tour. They practiced yesterday too, having some meetings too and mostly going through in what order to perform the songs and also deciding on what solo songs to perform. Carolina and Hannah are still planning on performing together; Maria is confused if she wants to perform a rock song or some rock ballad or something else, and Emelia knows she is going to perform her Japanese solo song from last year. But it is still a lot of planning and not to talk about practicing. While 5 Pieces have been going back and forth to Korea and in Japan having other schedules, the band has been practicing to learn the songs.

What Emelia personally asked for is the man who is an extra guitarist for the band; he isn’t part of the band but just for the concert he will be part of it. And who is he? For Emelia’s Japanese promotions last year, she performed the song [This Is Me] together with a band, and Ryo was part of that. She get along well with him and even calls him Koibito (which is Japanese for ‘lover’) as a joke after that he once had asked her to call him that when he thought she wouldn’t understand the meaning behind it – Emelia calls him that even after knowing the meaning behind it. She personally asked for him to be part of the concert because she thought his style matches theirs on stage when it is a live stage, and because 5 Pieces’ Japan Arena Tour will be with a live band from almost beginning to end; a few songs not being with the band.

The practice starts off. 5 Pieces and the band together with the producer and others are going through what songs they will go through today; they go through what the band has been taught and they join it in with 5 Pieces who sings the songs while holding the lyrics in their hands. There are a lot of papers to keep an eye on, and Hannah had made sure she had her own copy of each song before today’s practice started so she isn’t one of them who has no idea of what paper she is holding (like Carolina) or have a bunch of papers of different lyrics spread out around her (like Maria). But though it is chaos with all papers, the actual practice with the band goes well. The girls laugh when hearing how good it sounds to sing with a band and the band is really amazing and creative and they all seem to work pretty well even if all the ladies can’t speak Japanese very well. For now their managers are a must to keep around them because Hannah and Emelia aren’t all familiar with the terms in Japanese, so the managers help out to translate that.

Hannah is wearing a lips print t-shirt in white with a pair of washed blue jeans. It looks so simple and comfortable, and wearing sneakers to that fulfils Hannah’s outfit. Though it is just practice, there are a lot of cameras filming so 5 Pieces are wearing sponsored clothes, though they are able to wear a very basic and simple make-up to make it look like they aren’t wearing any make-up.

When getting a break after a few hours of practicing with the band, there are different movements in the room. One of the cameras that have been filming have the camera-man stepping up to Carolina to ask her in Swedish what they are doing now.

“The band is getting lunch,” Carolina answers in Swedish with her head on the side, not able to stand still and twitches by her own words in a disappointment. “And we will practice the choreography with the dancers. We don’t get to eat, but they do.”

She shrugs her shoulders with a grimace, her shoulders saying it doesn’t matter while her grimace says she wants to eat too and then she turns away from the camera to join in some of the others who are warming up. The comment about eating was a joke, because no way they can practice this much unless they get to eat.

“Most important part is the opening – [Bad Girls],” the choreographer is saying while they are starting to finish the warm up. “We need - Hannah, warm up more. We went through it yesterday but we looked through the practice video and the beginning of the song looks a little okay but the rest is just a mess.”

“Maybe because we haven’t learnt it yet,” Maria answers.

Hannah squats down to stretch out her legs, doing as the choreographer said.

“That is what we are focusing on today. Once you get the opening, you will feel for the rest,” the choreographer says.

Carolina is back up at the camera to quietly explain some things. “It’s messy at the moment because all the new songs haven’t been finished recording, so the set list isn’t completed and that leaves it impossible to learn the new choreography and know how to do everything. The opening is settled, but nothing else. And that’s messy. But in a few days, we will finish it and we can feel another level of chaos in learning everything.”

For the choreography in [Bad Girls], Hannah and some of the dancers are going to do a kick, which was why the choreographer told her to stretch some more. Because the last thing you want to do a month before the concert is to hurt yourself. During the day they keep practicing for hours. It is a lot of talking, because they need to exchange ideas and information and talk about how they could chance things and remind each other of some things and from time to time the ladies talks to the cameras. Korean, Japanese, Swedish and English are used depending on what the camera-man uses. The ladies informs that it is 24 days left and also that most songs are in Japanese – and they need to learn the lyrics because it is completely new songs – but there are some in Korean too; and when being asked why they don’t have just Japanese songs at the Japan Arena Tour, Maria simply answers by saying they have some awesome Korean songs.

After dinner it is a two hour break from the practice as 5 Pieces have their Japanese class, and after class it is time for more practice. Hannah and Carolina practices their duet of [I Love Rock ‘n Roll], filming the practice for directors and others to see it. It is solo songs practices now.

While sitting on the floor, done watching the practice video that she and Carolina just filmed, Hannah is asked by one of the staff in Japanese if she has decided on how to perform [I CRY] yet. She shakes her head, drinking some water before saying she has tried to come up with ideas but can’t get anywhere.

“Lee Sooman said it would be good if we had a pause during the stage to let the audience sing a bit of it,” Hannah tells the staff, “but I don’t know.”

She would love if that could happen, but at the same time she can’t expect the Japanese audience to know the lyrics for the Korean ballad.

“That sounds good though.”

Hannah gives an unsure expression, not really having a positive mind when thinking of [I CRY] that they all want her to perform. She doesn’t have to decide yet, but sooner or later it must happen. She also ignores the camera filming a few steps away from where she is sitting; she thinks that if she shows she knows the camera is there, she will have to talk, and she has no idea of what language it is.

Before midnight, the day’s practice ends, but they are told to be back early in the morning.
