Chapter 01

Youngest of Pieces: [WHO- I AM] (8)

A woman is holding on to the filming camera, working to film behind-the-scenes clips of todays and tomorrow’s shooting. She is at the centre of Seoul, South Korea, in a studio that now is filled with lowed voices of the staff talking that all seem to be busy preparing for the photo shoot. The camera in her hands are filming the studio hall she is standing in, capturing the corner of the hall that will be for the focus; a corner with white walls and floor, shining up with bright lamps while the rest of the hall is darker without so much lightning and the staff are walking around there among the empty space between pillars, tables and piles of things lying on the floor like equipment, bags and more. Standing on the darker side of the hall the camera catches two girls talking, and though they seem to wear casual clothes they are standing out among all the Koreans present, because these two girls have a European look.

The first girl has a dark brown hair-colour, cut short around her face in a boyish hairstyle and the bangs brushed to the right side. A pair of big, black fake reading glasses graces her pretty face that has a soft make-up on. opens widely when she laughs, a hidden v-shape of her face gets shown, and she hits the other girl lightly on the arm when laughing together. The second girl laughing with her is wearing a pretty hairband to her thin brown hair; the hair extensions to her short hair go just down below her shoulders, thinning out at the end. Comparing the two, they are both around the same height; the second girl has a smaller face and bigger eyes with a little more pointy round noise, but they are both wearing sneakers and casual, simple clothes that doesn’t stand out in colour nor shape. When the two of them notices the camera filming them from a small distance, the girl in glasses grabs the hand of the other girl to pull her along to the camera; they are both looking bright and cute with their happy smiles when they run up to the camera.

They are no one else but Carolina and Julia, two of the five members in the girl-group 5 Pieces.

“Guess where we are~” Carolina sings happily in her usual bright way, throwing out her hand happily while still holding on to Julia’s hand in the other. She is unable to be still in excitement and both girls are glancing from the camera lens to the woman holding the camera. Carolina gives a laugh at the silence, no one answering to her words and the woman is just there to film them; slightly aware of that she doesn’t need to ask a question to keep the talkative and bright Carolina on her feet. And the woman was thinking right because Carolina answers to her own question; “We are shooting the album cover for 5 Pieces repackage album~ Yay~~”

Happily she moves her shoulders, moving her free hand happily to her own cheer while Julia standing next to her is just laughing at first. Carolina has an awkwardness about her, which she is totally unaware of herself but those around her doesn’t respond to her words because she somehow manages to make you wonder what possibly could be said to response to not just her words but also for her active self.

“Happy new year~~” Julia then says and lowers her head for a bow to the camera.

Carolina is fast to grab her arm, her face-expression saying she remembered something by Julia’s words, and she makes them both take a step back for them together to bow towards the camera while saying “Happy new year” formally. When they are done they take a step back up to the camera again, looking a little calmer while smiling. Carolina keeps hugging Julia’s hand, smiling with the corner of pointing in her cheeks and Julia is standing with an expression waiting for her friend to keep talking.

“It is 2013 now,” Carolina informs, knowing the behind-the-scenes camera is filming to get not just clips from the making but also comments and information, and since this is the first greeting of the late morning, Carolina loves to give the main information before anyone else gets the chance, “and 5 Pieces is preparing to release a repackage album for our third album. The repackage album is awesome because … we add more colours of 5 Pieces. As you can see,” Carolina turns to Julia, letting go of her friend’s hand to be able to point at the top of Julia’s head where she is wearing the cute hairband, “it is not the usual style of pieces.”

Julia nods and says that 5 Pieces had a lot of different colours in their hairs for their [Black & White] promotions; while now they have just a simple one colour in their hair – she also adds that her hair is longer, laughing with Carolina because it is in fact hair-extensions, and that she likes it. The two of them are very talkative.

It’s been a week since the New Year started and a lot has happened since. 5 Pieces finished their promotions of the song [Daze] with a final performance on yesterday’s Inkigayo, having a blast performing the fun charismatic song as they always have, and though fans were very disappointed that the ladies ends the promotions after just about four weeks, the ladies were really happy because they love performing that song and also because Girls’ Generation was making a comeback the same weekend so the two girl-groups were having so much fun together. The ladies have also been busy practicing a lot for the song [Oppa] – the new song they will promote briefly for the repackaged album – that they now are preparing to both shoot the cover as well as music video for. The song [Oppa] was recorded and prepared back in 2011 when 5 Pieces was preparing to release their second album with a cute concept, but the song didn’t get to be part of the album or the promotions, but instead now is going to be the cooling track for the repackage album. After several rough dances and songs with breathtaking choreography as well as singing for their third album, promoting three songs so far, 5 Pieces have actually started to really enjoy the song.

It’s now Monday morning and 5 Pieces is shooting the cover for the repackage album, and after that they will film the music video for [Oppa]. But now, it is cover shooting.

Music is playing on a low volume in the studio, the last person to do the solo shooting is standing with the white corner as background and the photographer’s clicking sound from the camera is heard whenever a new picture is taken. It is the youngest member of 5 Pieces who is standing model; she is standing in a pair of chain-accent lace-up boots with her toes pointing inwards, black leggings to a black ruffle slipdress that is visible under a vermillion coloured knit top. A long silver necklace is hanging down between her s with a heavy ornament, the long sleeves of the top hides half of her small hands that are holding on to a white teddy bear half her size. Long wavy blonde hair in two soft ponytails are hanging down on each side of her head, a light make-up with a pair of clear blue-green eyes that looking at the photographer is completing the pictures with a simple face-expression that can be seen as both innocent and ordinary.

The same woman who not long ago stood and filmed Carolina and Julia during the break for behind-the-scenes is now filming among the staff, watching the shooting from behind the photographer and the staff that is making sure everything is going alright.

5 Pieces’ youngest member, Hannah, looks away from the photographer to look a little at the side for the next picture, holding the hand of the teddy bear in one hand to let it rest next to her leg. The woman also notices another member of the girl-group standing among the staff, taking pictures with a cell phone of the currently modelling girl.

“OK!” the photographer calls out when lowering the camera and Hannah hugs the teddy bear in her arms to be able to clap her hands while heading to the side, stopping her steps next to the photographer to look at the pictures taken. Quietly they both gives their opinions on some of the pictures and the girl laughs shyly, nodding when the photographer says they will take pictures without the teddy bear next so she drops it on the side before taking her place with the white background again.

Once she is done, the woman filming behind-the-scenes steps up in front of her just when she has gotten off the focus at the white corner, and in a nice voice the woman asks her how she thought it went. Hannah looks up with innocent eyes, smiling when seeing the camera filming her so her eyes disappear in half-moon eyes. The woman gets to repeat the question because Hannah had been busy listening to the stylist touching at the hem of her ruffle slipdress peeking out like a skirt under the knit top, and the teddy bear in her arms were in the way.

“Um… I think it went well. The pictures looked pretty,” she answers in a soft voice and she keeps smiling when she is asked what the story is behind the teddy bear. “The teddy bear…- It is actually a teddy bear I brought from home, a gift from a fan, and I … The photographer said we should take some pictures with it, and so we did… He liked the pictures with it but I think it got too cute for the concept so we took pictures without it.”

“It’s a pretty big teddy bear…” the woman mentions, letting Hannah take a step back to show up it.

“I got a bigger one at home,” Hannah answers and she laughs when realising what a child she is. But she still keeps talking about it in a sweet voice. “Fans keep giving me teddy bears… I don’t know why they do that, but it’s cute.”

Having the image of being the youngest member in 5 Pieces, Hannah has always this cute and shy personality for her fans. She isn’t a teenager anymore, but fans seems to see her still as the baby of the group; her own members call her that too, and she doesn’t have anything against it, as it doesn’t clash with the different image she has on stage.

“Carolina said that you are shooting the cover for your repackaged album and that it will be more colours of 5 Pieces in the repackaged album. Could you maybe explain that a little?” the woman asks Hannah when the girl doesn’t continue to talk, the way the other members seem to do so well.

Hannah bites a little at the inside of her lip, holding on to the teddy bear in her arms. “The title of the repackaged album is [WHO- I AM], and there is a song in the album named like that. Our very own member Emelia and producer Jo Insuk together worked on the song, and I think … it is a really good song. Please listen to it, and also the other songs. It is three new songs, and then it is … two new versions of previous songs, and I think they have colours of 5 Pieces that we haven’t really expressed yet.”

With a look at the woman filming, Hannah gets it confirmed that she is done talking and the girl gives her trademark eye-smile to kindly thank the woman for her work before leaving, walking to the changing room to wait for the group shooting. The changing room is filled with the managers and stylists as well as the members, getting ready for the group shooting or just resting. One of their managers is sleeping on a chair as he has been awake even longer than the girl-group members.

The member who had been taking pictures of Hannah with a cell phone during the solo shooting is now standing on the side in the changing room, holding out the cell phone for Hannah to see the screen. The youngest walks up to her to take the cell phone in both hands to see the pictures taken from a different angle than what the photographer did. She grimaces when seeing the pictures.

“I look depressed,” she complains.

“You look good. I like the pictures with Mr Bear,” 5 Pieces’ princess captain/leader Maria answers, taking back the cell phone to look at the pictures herself another time.

Hannah is the shortest member in the group, but even with insoles in her boots, Maria who is simply wearing flats is still 7-8cm taller. On their profiles it says Hannah is 164cm tall while Maria is 170cm tall, but no matter what Hannah does (high heels or insoles) she always seems to be shorter. Maria is tall and slim, being well known for not just her great voice but also her model-like body. Her hair today is long in a light brown colour with straight bangs covering her forehead, and just as the other members she is wearing pretty casual clothes. When she is standing there and looking at the pictures in silence she looks very sophisticated. She makes both boys and girls drool after her long legs and no matter what she does, Maria always manage to look good. Even in the craziest make-up and outfit, she can make it work and that is why Hannah admired their group’s leader.

The fifth and final member of the group is the oldest; Emelia. During the group shooting, she is standing a little behind Maria and Carolina, yet her natural pale skin and waist-long black hair stands out even between the group’s model and mascot. Her face is small, but she is also standing between the members with the biggest head (Maria) and face (Carolina), so it does look small between them. 5 Pieces always stands in the same order, whether it is for an album cover or in an interview. Way back before their debut, the girls made the order to stand in after seeing that the gods DBSK did it like that. At that time there weren’t a lot of idol groups, SNSD had just debuted and there weren’t many foreign fans at all in Europe. 5 Pieces, all born and raised in Sweden, started out a band under the same name as they are using now after being inspired by the Korean music and they decided the order to stand in just for fun. It has become one of their trademarks now, because it has been used wherever they go for the past almost five years.

Maria is always on their very right side. She had said that she doesn’t like to stand in the middle or with people on both sides, so she decided on her own to be on the side. Emelia stands next to her while Carolina is in the middle. There isn’t actually another reason for their positions; it was just Maria who wanted to stand on the side. On Carolina’s side stands the girl of the same height as her, Julia, and finally on the girls’ left side stands Hannah. While doing the cover shooting the girls stays in the same order, but they can stand back or sit down, all standing differently. Not for a single picture are they standing in a nice line next to each other, but they make it look really great they find out when looking through the pictures.

Five girls with five different looks and personalities, all of the same age with their own likes and dislikes. What one member doesn’t have, another member fills in, and together they fill out the pieces to complete the puzzle.

Hannah appears from the side, stepping up really close to the camera that the woman is filming with.

“It’s cold in here,” she says with a pout to the camera. “All the staff is wearing thick jackets and scarves, and this is what we are wearing…”

She takes a step back, spreading her arms out just lightly to reveal the black contrast-trim studded top with a pair of check trim skinny jeans (http://www.yesstyle.com/en/styleberry-contrast-trim-studded-top/info.html/pid.1032251562). Compared to the staff on the side that is wearing thick winter jackets to stay warm, she doesn’t look to be the right dressed for the weather, though they are indoors. Hannah then smiles and says it will be okay once they starts dancing, and she cutely moves her fingers for the camera to see when saying she hopes her fingers can survive it ‘til then.

The location has changed, and instead of being in the centre of Korea’s capital, they are in a city about an hour outside Seoul where the set for the music video has been prepared. The woman asks where they are, as you can see the set where they will film the music video behind Hannah, and the girl turns around while taking a step to the side so the camera can film both her and the background.

“This is… the…” she slowly starts to say, trying to remember what she had been told it is, “it’s the … day room slash 5 Pieces personal dancing room. It has our name on the floor there.”

She points to the centre of the set that has been prepared. Along the high walls there are comfortable sofas and arm-chairs, and in the middle of the floor it is a large name printed to fill out the room. It says ‘5 Pieces’ in cool letters, easy to read. Hannah says that they will dance on top of it. Along the walls it looks like a day room, but the floor makes it 5 Pieces personal dancing room. The place is huge and spacious, and where Hannah and the woman are standing and for the rest of the place it is just as it was at the cover shooting place; equipment to make a successful filming, everything needed and extra equipment in case an emergency occurs, there are extra sofas and other props. Sitting in one of the sofas on the set where they will film is Emelia. She looks bored while waiting to film, but she notices the camera filming Hannah far, far away and since she is in the frame she gives a bored v-sign.

“Could you give us a hint about the new song?” the woman then asks Hannah who turns back to the camera.

The girl smiles, a laugh hits when thinking of the song they are prepared to film. She opens to say something but gets quiet as her eyes follows someone walking behind the camera, and next she takes out her hand to pull someone in the frame to stand next to her. Carolina shoots the camera a bright smile and she is fast to put her arm around Hannah’s. Hannah tells their mascot to give a hint about their new song and Carolina is fast to start singing in a soft, smiling voice.

*It is at times like this,

I realise I’m still young

What love is all about,

I still don’t know th-*

Her voice suddenly cracks at the final tone when someone pops up and pushes her lightly, and instead to take her place next to Hannah is Maria. Maria moves her head close to the camera to see her reflection, touching her bangs slightly as if she is checking to see if she looks okay and she smirks when hearing Carolina complain in the back. The tall member stands up straight, looking at Carolina who pushes herself to stand next to Hannah again, arms linked, and while Maria says she came to see what owl had gotten hurt to be making such horrible sounds (she is referring to Carolina’s singing) and Carolina saying she is mean, in the very back barely noticeable Emelia is silently approaching them. You don’t actually recognize her until she is standing right behind them with her head between Carolina and Hannah, small eyes focused only on the camera, but when this airs people will freak out because they wouldn’t have noticed her approaching so they will probably want to replay it to see how she sneaks up behind them. The ladies are loud talking to each other, their voices echoing in the hall and Hannah’s surprised shout when seeing Emelia makes both Carolina and Maria give a jump and look what it is.

Emelia pretends its nothing and keeps looking at the camera even when Hannah hits her arm and Maria says sarcastically that she is so funny. Emelia is the rapper of the group and every since their beginning she has wanted, gotten and kept the image of being the scary ghost-looking member, and though she has gotten a joker image too, her look and need to creep up behind others while being filmed is still making her being the scary ghost-looking member of 5 Pieces. Carolina says she is the group’s mascot, but the other members are always making fun of for some reason. Her awkwardness makes it impossible to not do so; when she says a joke, no one can laugh, you just can’t laugh, not even pretend to, but she is still bright and keeps smiling and being constantly happy. Hannah has never seen Carolina cry because she is sad, and even now when complaining to their leader about being cut off when singing her part in their new song, Carolina is doing it to act cute and because she is slightly upset, but nothing else.

Hannah loves to see her members together. They are all so different and though they individually have images not alike the other, they simply become one in the group. Complaining and making fun of each other is just part of their daily lives, and honestly it is what entertained viewers during their audition period back in 2008, and to have them not changing it and still being this childish with each other makes a lot of people smile.

“I was giving a taste of how our new song sounds like,” Carolina complains to Maria, still upset about being interrupted when she had done the whole part so well and then the final part was ruined. Carolina is a perfectionist when it comes to herself; she must do it right, otherwise she has to start over.

“’I was giving a taste of how our new song sounds like’,” Maria imitates her with her tongue between her teeth, a whiny tone when imitating and Hannah laughs behind her hand over it.

“Don’t do that!” Carolina whines.

“’Don’t do that!’”

“Maria!”

“’Maria!’”

“Okay, seriously, now you are just-”

“’Okay, seriously, now you are just-’”

“Stop!”

Maria ends up laughing, happily walking away now when she has upset Carolina – another day is complete – and soon after the filming starts. 5 Pieces stands up for their positions, just like Hannah said on top of their name written on the floor, and they film the dance from beginning to end. Hannah was right: Though the dance is really soft and easy compared to their previous ones in 2012, their bodies get warm from dancing and all the lights on the set makes it hot too just where they are filming because all lights are turned to the same place. After repeating the dance a few times, you can expect those five dancing to get a little tired, but they all keep smiling and joking around between the filming. One of the times Emelia is taking pictures with her big, professional system camera that she brings along everywhere, currently taking pictures of the ladies joking around on the set where they have been dancing – Maria tries to get a picture taken of her foot kicked up in the air while Julia and Hannah are giving off some kind of overdoing gangster pose, which Maria follows along with because according to her she knows how to look like a gangster. Meanwhile, Carolina makes a run to the woman who is still standing with the camera to film behind-the-scenes, capturing 5 Pieces professional side while filming the video while also capturing their foolish sides in between.

“The set is really cute, so we are excited,” Carolina says and points at the set. “But we were told to not lean on the walls because they might fall.”

She gives a shocked face-expression when revealing that, meaning “the wall can fall? Does that make any sense?” and because she thinks that is how people will react over her comment she tries to explain that the walls are just fake, that the actual hall wasn’t fitting for the filming so they have created their own room. With a glance on the set she says that it would be cool if they actually had a room looking like that; jokingly asking if SM Entertainment can’t change their practice room. Another behind-the-scenes camera-man actually films the girls when they were exploring the set before, walking around to see how it has been made and also joke with each other about the fake door that is on one of the fake walls by standing on each side and pretend to panic because they can’t see each other as the door won’t open.

“We are using a camera,” Carolina starts to explain for behind-the-scenes and she gives a second pause in her talking to swallow, “a different camera that will go like up and down to be able to film us from both the front and above to catch our name written on the floor. Which is why we care a lot about how the crown of our head looks like.”

Her final joke receives no response at all from the camera-woman, but Carolina still pats her head a little, finding it funny.

“It’s a very simple, cute concept. Completely different from our recent ones … For [Daze] we had tattoos all over our bodies, throwing around our hairs as if we had gone insane, and now we are kindly smiling to the camera…” Carolina sounds like she is admiring or boasting about their different concepts and she gives a bright smile to the camera. “Don’t we look pretty?”

Laughingly they continue to film, being happy and excited, 5 Pieces shows no signs of being tired at all. Though when the song comes to an end they make the staff laugh as Emelia comments that she can’t smile because her face is frozen. Because of the cold hall, though she moves her body while dancing, her face doesn’t move enough to be as warm as the rest of her body. Before continuing to film another time, the girls are facing each other while warming up their faces through various face-expressions. Once again their laughter fills the set.

Out of nowhere, suddenly something small and brown comes running up on the set. A man runs after it, his back bent and arms stretched out in hope to catch it. Everyone laughs while someone calls out that the puppy is loose.

The cute little 4 months old English Cocker Spaniel puppy is one of 5 Pieces’ three pets. He is just as clumsy on his paws as the ladies are because just when he reaches the feet of Emelia he stumbles on his own and falls down, his tail constantly waving happily so his keeps flying back and forth and they all laugh at how cute he is. Julia picks him up, holding him away from her clothes and strictly heads to the side to the manager who had been cuddling with him out in the corridor to keep the curious puppy distracted from the sounds coming from the hall. And the cute interruption is fast over, and after calming down from it the producer says they will try to make the last shot now. Happily they all cheer when taking their positions and the song starts to play from beginning to end again.

5 Pieces claps their hands when the song comes to an end and they are told it is done, the ladies heading off the set. Hannah and Julia are both rushing to the changing room with laughter, wanting to go to the pets waiting and longing for them. Maria stops by the behind-the-scenes camera.

“Scene one; done. Now we will go change clothes and do it all over again,” she informs and gives a wave before walking off.

5 Pieces have so far been dancing in black clothes, simply black clothes, and they are going to change into the next outfits to film at the same set once again.

The beginning of the music video will show the set; day room/dance room, with the members of 5 Pieces as well as some extras having fun chatting and sitting by the sofas in the back. You can’t see the whole set as it is a close-up on them laughing and chatting, sitting in the sofa, on the floor or on the arm-rests and for the video you can see them talk and laugh but some background music will be played so you don’t actually hear anything. After changing clothes – Hannah gets to wear a hooded red top with a leopard-panel tank top, studded distressed denim shorts and over-the-knee stockings – 5 Pieces films just that part before they film the dance, just as they did earlier, beside from that this time it is extras sitting or standing in the back.

At the ending of the song, 5 Pieces are supposed to have fun when taking their ending poses. The awkward couple in the group, Julia and Maria – these two have both confessed in an interview that they are the most awkward together, but also Maria promised that they will try to get closer – so for their ending pose they both gets down on one knee facing each other and they can either put an arm around each other while facing the front or put their hands together or do something else. For the music video they had decided to put an arm around each other – the choreographer had told them to do it. Standing behind them are the other three members, with Hannah standing in the middle because the whole song ends with her cutely saying *Oppa, I like you (hi-hi)*. It’s a really awkward part that is super cute and adorable, but Hannah just wants to hide when she has to do it at the end of the song that they keep repeating. For each ending, even now when they are filming the music video, 5 Pieces does differently.

Just this time when they do the ending, Hannah is prepared to lip-synch her ending cutely when she bursts out laughing instead. The reason for her sudden laugh is because Emelia had strongly pushed both the squatting Julia and Maria to roughly fall down on the floor, and since Carolina had been leaning forward to have her head above Maria’s, the leader had grabbed her in hope to not fall but ending up making them both fall. Hannah laughs, claps her hands and jumps with the others that are laughing on the floor.

“Cut!” the producer laughs out.

It isn’t a serious shooting at all, and because the girls have been told to have fun especially at the ending, they do so. Emelia laughs too, sitting down on her to laugh at how hilariously the three girls had fallen like bowling pins and the staff is laughing with them all.
