Kyungsoon and Taekwoon

A Lack of Normalcy

Taekwoon’s POV

Before going to bed Thursday I sent a message to Kyungsoon asking her to keep her day open for me tomorrow. I was sad to see her reply. She had classes in the morning, and had to work until 8pm.

I didn’t want to interrupt her classes, but quickly decided that I would talk with her boss.

Kyungsoon’s POV

I had a difficult time paying attention in class on Friday. My professor droned on, and my mind kept wandering back to Taekwoon. What would I be doing right now, if I didn’t have class. Where would we be going if I didn’t have to work?

We had been spending most of our free time with each other, and I found that when I was not with Taekwoon, he occupied my mind anyway.

When class ended, I looked down at a blank page. I had not taken a single note. I sighed and packed my things. Throwing my bag over my shoulder, I made my way out of the classroom, and toward the pet store.

I quickly changed in the back. Using my shoulder to open the door, I walked into the front of the store while tying my apron.

“Kyungsoon? What are you doing here?”

My head snapped up to look at my boss. “What do you mean? I was clearly scheduled to work.”

He shook his head, and slowly used my shoulders to turn me around. With a gently push he directed me back to change. “Not today. I’ve already called in Bangseok, he should be here any minute actually.” He glanced down at his watch. “Anyway, go out and enjoy yourself.”

I shifted my eyes confused, but changed back into my street clothes as instructed. When walking about I saw the same scene from a couple of months ago. He stood there with not one, but two cups of coffee and watched me intently. He mirrored my steps and we met in the center of the crosswalk.

The first thing he did was lean forward a place a chaste peck on my lips, before handing me a drink. Once his hand was free, he took my hand and we walked back toward my apartment.

“Was this your doing?” I asked

He took a drink, and didn’t answer, but I did notice that his ears slowly darkened to a brilliant shade of red.

“Thank you.” I took a drink as well. We walked in silence for a moment. Once we arrived, I placed my book bag in my apartment and we took off walking again. “So where are we going.” He shrugged in reply. “You don’t know? Or are you not telling?” He again shrugged, but this time a smile tugged at his lips.

We made our way to the subway. Taekwoon bought the tickets without letting me see the destination. I was very excited, and anxious. This was the first real date we have had. Normally we just spent the day at my apartment or his house. Occasionally we had gone to get coffee. This made everything seem more, official some how.

Taekwoon’s POV

As we came to stand in front of the large English lettering reading ZOO, my palms grew sweaty.

At first Kyungsoon didn’t say anything. He mouth hung slightly ajar. She turned to look at me with wide eyes, “You took me to the Zoo?!” She exclaimed.

I nodded, afraid I had made a poor choice, “Is that ok?”

She grinned and nodded eagerly. “More than ok! I love the Zoo.”

She took hold of my hand and began to drag me to the nearest exhibit. I couldn’t help but grin at her excitement.

It seemed that with each exhibit her excitement grew. She excitedly snapped pictures on her cell phone, and read the plaques aloud. “Did you know that the roar of a lion can be heard for up to 8 kilometers or 5 miles?” I smiled and shook my head no.

As we arrived at the exhibit for amur leopards she looked at me sadly, “do you get sad when you see them stuck in a cage? I had never really thought about it until now, but with there being less than 20 know amur leopards in the wild, that means most of the population is in captivity.”

I smiled at her and shook my head, “I am just glad that they are alive. Right now they are safer in captivity than in the wild. There are some conservation and reintroduction efforts as well.” I bit my lip and thought for a moment, “I would love for them to be able to live in the wild, and have large numbers again, but that doesn’t seem to currently be an option.” I shrugged.

Kyungsoon stared at me. After a moment my ears began to burn. I grabbed her hand and pulled her away. She begged and pleaded with me to get a caricature drawn. I eventually gave in. In the picture Kyungsoon was grinning and riding on the back of a giraffe. I was on her right on an elephant, wearing my normal stony expression. She loved it and carried it as though it were fragile.

One of the last things we saw before leaving was the penguins. There was a large statue out in front of the exhibit, “Please, I want to have a picture taken.” She looked up at me with doe eyes. I nodded.

Kyungsoon handed her phone to an employee and asked them to take the picture. After the first shot the employee looked up worried, “Uh, ma’am. Your boyfriend isn’t smiling in the picture. I’ll take it again.”

Kyungsoon nodded and turned to me, “smile,” I smiled at her. “Not like that,” She poked my side gently, “a real smile. One that will make people think that we actually like each other.”

I thought about it for a moment and we both turned to look back at the employee. He began to count down, and I remember the events of the day. I couldn’t help but smile. The phone clicked taking the picture.

“I’ll take one more.” The man held up a finger not taking his eyes off the screen.

He began to count again. I whispered her name and Kyungsoon turned to look at me with inquisitive eyes. Our lips met as the man said three, and the phone clicked indicating the picture was taken.

When I pulled back, I was wearing a larger smile, than I remember ever wearing in the past. Kyungsoon blinked at me a few times, before turning a pleasant shade of pink. I retrieved her phone from the employee and thanked him.

She was still dazed when I returned.  I gave her a peck on the cheek and grabbed her hand. WE were silent as we made our way home.
