07 || Prom

Backstage Couple

She looked stunningly beautiful, her features transform to an amazing one. It would made people wonder if she’s a real human being, from the look of it, she looked very beautiful. She was naturally beautiful, yet with make-up one, she looked stunning. This is it, this is the night where she’d have to face her fear and attend the prom with pride and confidence.

Her closet was wide open; she has been searching for one special dress ever since the sun rises in the morning. She finally finds it, hidden at the bottom of her closet, neatly wrapped inside a thick plastic. The fabric still look fabulous and pretty, Jieun loves it, it matches her style perfectly. She has never worn it before, but today she will try it on and hopefully it could fit her.

She carefully opens the plastic and cleans up the invisible dust. She smile in satisfaction yet there’s something bitter about her smile. If she ever had the chance to attend the prom from two years ago, she’d have worn this dress. Something she designs on her own, with a little help from the professional. She tried hard to make this dress look good on her, that day, she remember how hard she tried to look stunning in front of him. And now, she’s going to wear it for someone else.

She was wearing a one-piece satin dress. It has a pastel color, one of her favorites – cream – that matches her milky white skin tone perfectly. It has long sleeves and it was fell down to her knee. It has collars to pull of the neat looked and overall; it looked very nice on her. The dress fits her perfectly. She looked very beautiful. She pull it off with some hair accessories, making herself to look even more beautiful. She tried to take a look of her own reflection and faint a bitter smile as she’s satisfied with her looks. She paired it with a pair of high heels and finally ready to go.

She was nervous, her heart was thumping around. It isn’t her first attending a prom, yet she’s being twice nervous than usual. It was nerve wrecking; Jieun barely could breath because of it. She was patiently waiting for her partner, checking out her looks from time to time. Pil Suk was amazed by her sister appearance and even gasped at her looks when she had just comes out from her room. But Jieun is still worried.

This is it, her first prom in Korea. She can’t help but feel nervous, she wanted to know how it would feel like, would it be nice or casual. She puffed her cheek and blows her breath cutely, pouting once in a while since her partner is late. Her thoughts were wondering around once again, she’s wondering about him, Kim Myungsoo. Will she ever catches his eyes? Has he asked Suzy out?

The gentle knock on her door surprises her; she quickly shoved off all her thoughts and stands tall. Her pink lips curl up, forming a beautiful smile as she open the door to welcome her partner. She was nervous, although he’s someone she has known well over the years, but still two long years has caused the two of them to be quite distant. Not to mention, Jieun hasn’t talked to him that much these days.

Jieun looked up, sweetly meeting his gaze and smile even wider. He had that flirty smirk on, but soon changes to a gentle and sweet smile. His gaze turns to a lovely one, full of admiration. His mouth was left hanging as Jieun appearance shocked him. Yes, Lee Ji Eun is indeed beautiful but who could ever imagine her beauty could advance even more. The Lee Ji Eun that stood before him, she’s very beautiful that his heart start thumping incredibly.

“Ji… Eun… Jieun… you’re…” He stutters, eyeing her from head to toe, “well this must have sounded very lame but you’re… very beautiful.” He complimented her.

“Oh, our cheesy Woohyun has never changed. You’re late!” Jieun pouted, playfully hitting his chest.

“That little dino Jiyeon must have spread the virus to you. Since when did you get so harsh? It hurts.” Woohyun pouted.

“You’re very mean. No wonder Jiyeon always complains about you. It’s nice to see you fully dress, Woohyun. It looked very nice on you.” Jieun complimented as he took her hand.

“Well, thank you, princess. So shall we get going?”

“Cheesy.”

“No, I’m just greasy.”

***

Myungsoo hasn’t seen Jieun around, he hasn’t notice her presence. He’s very aware of her presence, he’s sure of it. He always knows it, when she’s around. Maybe he spent too much time observing her, even being a creepy stalker, so to notice her presence isn’t a big problem to him. He has arrived earlier with Suzy, while that girl is now busy fixing her make up somewhere. Sure, Suzy looked amazingly beautiful but his heart, it still belongs to Jieun.

Lee Ji Eun arrived late, together with Nam Woohyun as her date for tonight. She was happy about it, they’re just friend but it felt more comfortable. She felt safe and her thoughts and insecurity are being washed away easily. It didn’t take long before she turned to the center of attention, just like the old days. People were admiring her beauty and her shy personality forces her to hide behind Woohyun while tugging his shirt.

She, too, has yet to find Kim Myungsoo figure, nor the date he brought to the prom. Her eyes have been searching for him but no signs of him could be found. She was uneasy about him bringing another girl to the prom. She was wondering how he would looked, how he would dress, whether he’d be wearing the suit she made for him years ago. As much as she wanted to see him wearing it, time has passes quickly. She doubt he’d fit to the suit, as he has grown so much more.

The place was crowded as the loud music filled the air and people started to filled the place. Couples were dancing around, giggling while snuggling, adjusting themselves with the romantic atmosphere. The girl were all dressed very beautifully, with various kinds of dresses from a simple to a rather complicated one, but still Lee Ji Eun stays as the centre of attention, as she hid herself behind her date tonight. The boys, too, were all dressed in a suit or at least cardigans. It made them looked cool and rather attractive, but Lee Ji Eun had to admit her date looks the best tonight.

The crowded place made it harder for both of them to look for each other. Jieun could barely walk and Woohyun would have to yell the word excuse me. Woohyun was gently guiding her, gently holding her hand tight, as they searches for their bestfriend, Park Jiyeon; although the two was caught up in an argument, they both made up after an hour long talk via phone call. It was very nice of Woohyun to treat her that way, yet she knows he felt slightly uncomfortable.

She’s his first love after all, it’ll leave marks, asking her out wasn’t something he’d do, knowing she has loved someone else. Woohyun was scared of regenerating the feelings that have long faded away. He was scared he might love her again, unable to let go like the old days. The fact that she’s no longer dating Kim Myungsoo made him hope, and now he’s restraining himself from loving her even more, while Kim Myungsoo was nowhere to be found.

Lee Ji Eun might be the centre of attention tonight, but not Myungsoo although his popularity has yet to decease. He was sitting in a rather peaceful place with a whiny Suzy next to him. He was watching the crowd grows, listening to the loud music while bobbing his head up and down, as his mind travels to Jieun’s figure. He’ll have to see her, he was wondering who would her date be. He didn’t have the slightest idea of it.

He soon stood up and enters the crowds. Bae Suzy was supposed to be his weapon tonight, yet she has turned to a whiny little girl. Myungsoo was annoyed with every skin ships she creates and flirty words that escaped through . She was being whiny, asking him to be a good date and bring her some sodas. He was tired, listening to her nagging and finally agreed, leaving her all alone.

And in the crowds, he found her.

She was wearing a one-piece dress that fits her perfectly. The cream color fits her skin tone perfectly. Her hair accecories made her look perfect and the light make-up she wears make her looks rather natural and beautiful. He was standing behind her, watching her laughing and smiling in another man arms. It was Nam Woohyun, although the fact wasn’t surprising at all, he can’t help but dislikes it. She looked very happy being with him, unlike those days they spent together.

He found himself quietly watching her, her movement, everything about her. She was talking to Jiyeon and yet he can’t take his eyes off her. The others man, too, was mesmerized by her beauty. The girls were staring at her enviously, yet some couldn’t help but admire her even more. Kim Myungsoo found himself to be one of those men, who could only helplessly watch her, wishing she could be his. Yet it might have been too late.

She has never changed, she still is the centre of attention, where every eye couldn’t help but laid their gaze on her. She has never changed – her sweet personalities and beauty. Nothing has ever changed about her, yet there was a single thing that could never be fixed. The only thing that changes was their relationships. Between him and her, everything has ended.

***

“Jieun… he’s here.” Jiyeon whispers slowly.

It is clear to Jiyeon, who her friend was searching for her former boyfriend. Jieun keeps tugging Woohyun shirt, keeping him close to her, yet her hearts and mind was somewhere else. She was thinking about Myungsoo, quietly searching for him, her eyes wandering around just like her first day of arrival. She looked happy, but something about her smile was odd, Jiyeon knows it better than anyone.

Jieun was surprised when Jiyeon bluntly stated that Kim Myungsoo is there, standing behind her, quietly watching her. She was nervous and scared. She glances at Woohyun, her date for tonight, and as soon as he nodded, she turns to see him. And again, her brown orbs met his darker one, locking their gaze as if they wanted to reach for each other.

He looked handsome, wearing the navy blue suit she made for him years ago. As she thought, navy blue fits him. He looked cool, the color fits his personality perfectly and it seems he could fit in to the size of it. He was standing still, staring at her from head to toe, as if she’s a stranger. Yes, it is the fact how the two has turn out to be a mere stranger. It made her uncomfortable, the way he stares at her. She tugs Woohyun shirt, making the man flinches and looked at her.

He was all alone, she could not found his date for tonight. She wonders why, Suzy would be a great choice for tonight. It was selfish and evil of her, to feel extremely happy, after failing to find his date for tonight. It was extremely selfish of her to take Nam Woohyun as her date, while he was all alone. But then, it was all crushed down, when she saw Bae Suzy running toward him and quickly hugs him. She could only stared at him in horror before turning back to hide her pain and insecurity.

She looked beautiful, yet she has someone else.

He looked handsome, yet he has someone else.

And it’s not me.

***

The sweet romantic music played, filling the atmosphere with a romantic love. His arm was on her waist, wrapping her tiny waist gently. Her hands were both on his broad shoulder. Their steps were in sync with music, gentle and sweet steps. They were so close, they could smell each other faint scent, feel each other hot breath on their skin. Their eyes were locking against each other. Their lips curl up a smile.

Woohyun can’t help but smile, as both of them dance together. It has been a long time, since the last time he could see her beautifully smiling. It has been such a long time since she’s next to him. She looked beautiful tonight, as always, and it felt very special. They were dancing to the music, their first dance together. Jieun never really attends a ball, even when Woohyun invited her to be his partner but it seems living in London has brought a lot of changes upon her.

She had that lovely gaze on her, a lovely smile as well. Couples were dancing around them, yet they only cared about themselves, as if the world could only be consisted of the two. Lee Ji Eun might only consider him as a friend, despite her knowledge of his feelings toward him. But it is enough, Woohyun could understand her choice. He hopes his heart won’t be playing around with him, because feeling is the hardest game the world would ever play for its citizen.

And he knows, although she was dancing with him, she was searching for someone else. She might have stated it clear before, how there’s nothing going on between her and Kim Myungsoo, but her heart was unable to let go. Inside her heart, she still loved him, no matter how hard she tried to run away from reality.

“You look very beautiful tonight.” Woohyun complimented.

“Thank you. You look nice, too. Cheesy.” She chuckled.

“I never know you could dance this well.”

“I learn. You’re great too. At least none of us are stepping on each other foot.”

“You’re wearing heels, if you ever stepped on me, you’ll have to give me a payback.”

“And what is that?”

“A kiss? Or maybe a date?” He leans closer.

“Cheesy.”

The romantic atmosphere made the dance means a lot for those who are madly in love. Jieun was spinning around, followed by Woohyun’s guide. He was very gentle, as if he’s afraid of breaking her. He never knows she’d be fine being touch. She used to be a rather timid woman, if you ever lay a finger on her; she’d slapped you without a second thought. Yet maybe living in London has made her being used to skin ships.

The music changes, to a deeper one, to a rather romantic one. It was the time to changes partners and Jieun was rather scared about it. She was curious about who’ll it be or whether she’d be able to pick her partner. She was curious about Kim Myungsoo’s partner and without her realizing, she wanted to be his partner. She was very selfish, she knows it, yet the game has just started to play around with her feelings.

She wasn’t even able to look around, when she felt an arm wrapping her waist. She almost screams at the sudden contact, before being able to recompose herself. She was pulled to another man’s embrace, a warmer one, a gentler one. She was surprised to feel his gentle touch, as if he truly loved her. She put both her hands on his broad shoulder, feeling his warmth.

It was him.

She looked up, only to meet the figure of the man. It was him, it was Kim Myungsoo. She wanted to look away but he prevented her to do so. He lifted her chin up, forcing her to lock their gaze together. She has never been this much close with him; she could hear his heart beat. His dark orbs, it was as mesmerizing as always. It attracted her, more and more, to dive the depth of it. Her brown orbs, it was as lovely as ever. It made him love her more and more.

She was surprised by his gentle touch, by his gentle gaze. His touch was warmth and she could feel her body heating by his gentle and careful touch. She could feel her cheek heating up by his gaze. She could feel her heart beating faster by his presence. She wasn’t smiling; she was gazing blankly at him. He, too, was only staring at her with a straight face.

It felt nostalgic; she remembers the first time they dance. His gentle touch, his gentle gaze, his presence, it felt so close. She remembers how her heart skips beautiful beats as she gazes deeper. She remembers how warm it felt to stay close to him. She remembered the secure feeling he creates, she felt safe and sound. She remembers how the world suddenly meant nothing to her.

Yet now, she knows it was too late. He felt so close yet so far. His gentle touches, his warmth were things that would fade away. She knows it has ended; it was her choice to end this. By the time this dance ended, she’ll have to go back to Woohyun. She’ll have to go back to being strangers and it hurts. She was too afraid to get hurt, yet now she’s hurting, as much as he’s hurting.

Right now, at this moment, she wanted to be naïve. She let her heart takes over her mind, she let her irrational love took over her. She let her lips curl up to a smile, gazing loveably at him, as both of them dances with romance in the air. Once it ended, she’ll leave. Kim Myungsoo, too, was replying to her beautiful smile. He let his lips curl to a smile, gazing gently at her. And then… he smirks.

***

Bae Suzy found herself surrounded by the INFINITE, in addition of Nam Woohyun and Park Jiyeon. They were glaring at her, who tried to fight them back and chased after Myungsoo and Jieun. The couples has returned back to its original pairs, but then Myungsoo suddenly drags Jieun with him an exited the place. It made Suzy freaks out, trying to chase after them.

Jieun was struggling hard to yank his hand off her, yet he was being a stubborn guy. He didn’t let her go, instead he grab her wrist even tighter. They exited the place with a struggling Jieun, hitting his chest with all her might. He was smirking, he had that evil smirk on his face, which made Sungjong scared of the possibilities he’d hurt his noona.

It was outside, the place where Myungsoo spent the rest of the prom night crying after Jieun’s departure. No, he wasn’t crying – in fact, not a single tear escape his eyes after her departure – he was mourning. He was being gloomy for the whole night before finally receiving her confession the next morning. Now, here they are, both of them, beneath the cold winter night, standing before each other, not as lover but as stranger.

“Let go!” she screams.

“Let go! Let go! Kim Myungsoo, let me go!” She screams, trying to struggle free, only to meet failure.

Bang!

She was harshly pushed against the wall, trapped between his strong arms. His gaze changes, just like at the time. She cringes, she back was in pain thanks to his strength, and he bumps her quite hardly. She looked up, meeting his darkens gaze. Something about his gaze was mysterious and she founds it scary. No word was daring enough to escape her lips. He locked their gaze together.

“So… it’s Nam Woohyun? It’s very easy for you to move on.” He smirked.

“Isn’t it you? It’s Bae Suzy. What are you doing? You told me you’ve not move on, so what is she doing there?”

“Are you jealous?”

“Are you?”

He kept silence, staring at her with his mysterious gaze. He shook his head with no hesitation as he freed her. She cringes again, rubbing her hurting back before standing still and glares at him. The silence was thrilling, as if it would be enough to kill a person. It was very uncomfortable.

“Is that all? I’ll leave then.” She turns around, leaving him all alone.

“Okay, fine! I’ll say it just once!” He suddenly grabs her arms and yelled at her, stopping her from leaving any further.

It was hurting her, his strong grip to prevent her from leaving. It felt desperate, that it left faint red marks on her skin. He was staring at her, with a rather upset gaze yet hopeful. The mysterious and cold aura it creates was left hanging there. She stood still, locking their eyes once more. Kim Myungsoo knows something about her gaze felt upset, as if she’s force to talk to him. It felt as if she wanted to run away from a monster like him.

“I love you.” He said.

“Why… now?” she murmurs, her voice cracking, “I told you we’ve ended.”

“Do you think I believe it?” He lifted her chin, forcing her to look at him in the eyes, “Lee Ji Eun, look at me and tell me you don’t love me. Then, I’ll leave you, now and forever.”

Tell me you don’t love me.

She felt the world turning black and white, and then turning gray. She was standing between it, without anything clear like black and white. No one ever told her what is true and which was wrong. Nobody ever told her how to know when you loved someone. And now, here she knows she still loved him, yet she’ll have to tell him she didn’t. How could she do that? Telling him everything is over was hard enough.

She was afraid to get hurt, she can’t afford getting hurt. She was afraid of changes, she was afraid about returning. She fears Myungsoo would reject her, that he’d have moved on and she’ll be the only one waiting by the side lines. Maybe that’s why she turned rather selfish and ended up hurting one another. She ended up lying to herself, telling they can’t work it out, telling it has ended; when deep inside her, she wishes the circumstances are different.

“Myungsoo… I don’t –“

“Do you think I’d gladly received a no? Lee Ji Eun, have you forgotten how selfish am I? How brutal and cruel I really am? I hope you don’t because you’re going to suffer it all again. No, no, a selfish man like me will never accept a no.” Myungsoo smirks.

“Myungsoo what are you…”

“Let’s begin this all over again. I told you I love you. Well, I do love you and you don’t? Don’t lie to me, Lee Ji Eun. I know you want me. The way you look at me, the way you search for me… Oh come on! I’m handsome; every woman would want me in their life.”

“Do you think I want you, Myungsoo?”

“I love you and you don’t?” His gaze changes, to a rather sad one, as if he was pleading her not to say no. He was begging her, to say that she still love him. “I love you, isn’t it clear enough?”

“I spent two years Myungsoo, thinking about you, thinking about love. Weren’t we a bit too young? I think about it to myself. Then it comes to me… should I love rationally or foolishly? Should I date Jang Wooyoung? That man is perfect. He has bright future; he’d easily guarantee my happiness, everything about me. I’d never suffer in his arm. If I ever loved foolishly, then I’d sacrifice everything for a man that couldn’t guarantee a single thing for me.”

“A man like me.” Myungsoo lowered his head.

“Then I come back here, knowing I still have the feeling for a man. He’s there, waiting, although I told him not to wait. He had another woman, I had another man, are we dating? No. I was afraid to get hurt, very. That’s why we hurt each other. Then… yesterday, a friend of mine just made me realize… how should I love someone.”

“I love you, Lee Ji Eun,”

“I realize I shouldn’t love someone foolishly nor should I love someone rationally. I should love someone, as the saying goes. I should just love someone, because I love that person. Kim Myungsoo, I love you.”

Chapter 57: Just read your story and I actually like this part 2 more than the previous one. I noticed you tend to write about dark dramatic stories full of angst. It is engrossing although a bit depressing at times. Keep writing & hoping you eventually consider a happy ending next time. Thank you

Chapter 57: awesome story authornim :) loved it thank you

Chapter 57: I'm really glad that you patiently worked through the sequel and finished it(so awesomely) even though you often lost inspiration.u knw it didn't seem so coz every chapter in the sequel, especially, the last 10 chapters (in my opinion)were rlly special, the stuff of hard work and you gave a lot of urself in2 it.you weren't trying to please anyone in particular,u weren't writing just for the sake of tryin 2 get more readers and rather went with the natural flow of the story and your own feelings.i like u 4 that. And all your efforts and the wide range of emotions you captured in all the unsaid words makes this a unique and honest work of fiction.there were many aspects of the backstage princess that left me discontented and even pissed but the sequel settled all of that into sth more serene and satisfying. at times, the story seemed to be dragging on but then it felt necessary nonetheless.sorta ambiguous heh.The epilogue was epic and i appreciate your take on female characters, many ppl, being female writers themselves seem to glorify their male leads' so-called greatness and seem confused as in how to treat their female characters.they often turn out to be subservient or too black n white or a k/j-drama rip-off or pretensious in an annoying way.you tried to respect your characters and also didn't follow a typical formula where crap like this happens- during myungu's numerous break-ups woohyun would end up playing a more prominent romantic role(sth like a fling),jiyeon wouldn't rlly have much of a story n would've ended up with woohyun, jieun would've been more servile n weak, pil suk (i hope m gettin all the names ryt,m terrible wid names) wud've been forgotten n ofcourse myungu would've been 2gether till the end even if jieun had gotten battered like 5 times.sth like that though nowadays most stories with a typical storyline try to b a bit better than that.M immensely relieved this story did none of that and i've been anticipating that epilogue 4 ages!

Chapter 57: it was casual but appropriate, i think. open but closed. i'm glad jieun and myungsoo had proper closure though-- neither of them would be able to move on if they hadn't, in my opinion. some things are better left alone. too painful of a love isn't love after all.

wow though. congrats on finally finishing!!! you're definitely the author of some of the longest iu fics. your name needs to be remembered in an iu tribute somewhere HAHA. are you going to be taking a break? if so... good luck? haha. will miss you!!!!! be back soon yeeah.

Chapter 57: you're right :)) This probably isn't the ending I would like to see. From your very first chapters till this one, I always keep a little hope that after all hurting cycles they"ll be together in the end. But once again, you're right when not pairing the two up together. Myungsoo and Jieun both love and need each other so much to the point they hurt each other and be doubtful about their love. It's tired and hurt to see them like this T T
Thank you for writing such an amazing story and bringing us surprises through each chapter :') I'd love to read your next story.
Thank you again and wishing you the best!
