D-Day

Jonghyun spent the whole day in school by himself, without even uttering a word to anyone. Other than during vocal training, he remained quiet. He kept checking his phone to see if there was a reply.

A text came in during math. But it wasn’t from who he was expecting.

Key: Let’s meet. Wait for me in your music room at 5!

He let out a sigh and continued staring blankly at the equations written on the board.

“So we’re set right?” Jinhee looked at the other 5 with anticipation. “Yup! We’re set. So Jinhee you ready?” Luna asked.

“I think so. I hope I can pull it off.” She doubted herself but the thought of all their hard work the past few days made her determined.

“Goodluck!” One by one they waved and got into Minho’s car.

He was in his music room, waiting for Key as told. He played the piano to kill the time.

“Where is he? …” Jonghyun glanced at the clock on the wall. It was half past 5. 30 minutes after the time Key had mentioned.

A soft knock on the door made him look up. The door slowly creaked open.

“Jonghyun oppa?” Jinhee’s voice echoed the room.

“J-Jinhee?” He slowly got up from his seat.

Jinhee opened the door slowly and kept her head down. She sniffled a few times.

“Are you crying?” He wanted to go over and hug her but was afraid she would run off if he did. “Come here.” He said.

Jinhee stepped in and closed the door behind her. She started to walk in small steps but then ran over into Jonghyun’s arms, sobbing. Jonghyun was startled but wrapped his arms around her and rubbed her back to calm her down.

“What happened?” He asked.

“I … I did something wrong. I didn’t mean to. Now I can’t go back home.” She sobbed. “I can’t. Wooyoung oppa would never let me back home. I have nowhere to go now.”

“What did you do?” He lifted her chin so that she was facing him. Tears were rolling down her cheeks.

“I … I ….” She started but then burst out into tears again.

“It’s okay. You can tell me later. Don’t cry anymore. Please.” He begged. He sat back down on his seat and let her sit on his lap, still hugging her.

After a while, she stopped crying and looked at him. “I’m sorry I didn’t talk to you for the whole week. I’m really sorry.” She said.

He smiled and pushed her hair behind her ear. “It’s fine. Are you okay now?”

“Please. Take me home.” She said. “With you.”

He was hesitant but he didn’t want her to start crying again. So he brought her home to his apartment.

She followed behind as he walked to his apartment door. He turned to her and smiled before opening the door. She smiled back nodded at him to open the door.

“Oh why is it so dark—“

“SURPRISE!!!!!!” The lights came on and there was confetti flying around. Jonghyun was frozen in his spot, still holding onto the handle of the door. His eyes were full of shock. But then a smile formed.

“Happy birthday Jonghyun oppa!” Jinhee yelled, jumping up and down. “Were you surprised? You were, right?”

“Of course he is, look at his face.” Wooyoung said. Even he was present.

Everyone was. Including Jinhee’s father, Jonghyun’s sister and mother.

“A .. A surprise party?” Jonghyun was still processing all of this. “Yes, now stop standing at the door and let’s celebrate!” Onew said.

Jinhee pushed Jonghyun away from the door and towards where the party was. He looked around. There were cupcakes on the table; most of them were purple. And he knew why.

“Here hyung, happy birthday!” Taemin handed him a bouquet of flowers.

“Wow I … thank you. I thought everyone forgot. No one wished me today.” He said, eyes b with tears.

“That was all part of the plan.” Key said. “Anyway, this was all Jinhee’s idea.”

Jonghyun turned towards Jinhee who was beaming. “Thank you.”

“No problem. Now stop being so emotional!”

“Yeah Jjong, cut the cake!” His sister pulled him over to the table and handed him a plastic knife. “Um, why are there three cakes?”

“Because someone couldn’t decide on the flavour of cake we were going to get. So we bought three. Chocolate, strawberry and banana.” Key said.

“Ooh banana cake!” Taemin pushed everyone out of the way and stood in front of the banana flavoured cake. “Taemin, calm yourself.” Luna said. “There’s no such thing. It’s cake.” He replied.

Minho lighted the candles on Jonghyun’s cake while everyone sang him a birthday song. “Okay hyung, make a wish.” Jonghyun closed his eyes and made his secret wish, hoping it would come true. He blew out the candles and cut the cake.

“Noona, that one. That’s Jinhee.” Jonghyun whispered to his sister and subtly pointed to Jinhee who was sitting with Taemin across the room. “I know.”

“How’d you know?” He titled his head to the side. “From the way you look at her.” She smiled. “Have you told her yet?”

“No …”

“Why not?!” She hit his arm lightly. “She wasn’t talking to me for the whole week!”

“You better tell her soon. Or else, she will never know your feelings and she’ll end up going off with someone else and you’ll never get to be with her because she’ll only ever see you as a friend.” So Dam let out a breath.

“…. Thanks noona.”

“Ehem.” Someone cleared his throat making the both of them turn. “Oh it’s your friend. I’ll leave you two.” So Dam said and left.

“Hey hyung.” Minho smiled and reached out his hand. “Happy Birthday.” Jonghyun shook Minho’s hand and returned the smile. “Thanks Minho.”

“I’m sorry for what happened the other day.”

“Oh it’s fine … I’m sorry too.”

They hugged. Before Minho pulled away from the hug, he whispered “By the way, don’t misunderstand. This doesn’t mean I’m giving up on Jinhee.”

They looked at each other and smirked.

“Hey. What are you guys smiling about?” Jinhee appeared and stood in the middle. “Nothing.” Minho said. “I’m gonna go get some more food.” He walked away and gave another smirk to Jonghyun.

“Thank you for this.” Jinhee looked away from Minho and at Jonghyun, giving him a bright smile. “It’s nothing. That’s what friends are for right?”

His smile faded. Friends. That word got to him. He bit his lip. Should he still confess? Now that he knew the only reason Jinhee had not replied his text or met up with him was because of this; this surprise party.

“Hello? Oppa?” She waved a hand in front of him. “Are you okay?”

It brought him back to reality. “Oh yeah yeah fine.” He rubbed the back of his neck.

“Anyway, I’m so sorry I’ve been ignoring you the past week. It was all just part of the plan. You forgive me right?”

Jonghyun chuckled and pinched her cheeks. “Of course I do.”

“Good!” She let out a sigh of relief.

He watched as she went back to where she was seated.

“Hey that’s mine!” Taemin snatched a cupcake away from Jinhee. “Taemin! There’re still cupcakes left on the table!”

“So? I want this one.” “So do I!” Jinhee said and they fought for the cupcake; pulling it back and forth.

“Hey why are most of the cupcakes purple?” Luna asked.

“Oh that’s because Taem—“

“SHUT UP JINHEE!”

“So … happy birthday.”

“Thanks Wooyoung hyung.”

“You’re welcome.”

“…. Okay.”

“Ooh it’s cologne!”

“That’s from me.” Key said.

“Aw, thank you Key. Wait … Are you trying to tell me I don’t smell nice?”

It was getting late. The adults had already left; leaving the seven teenagers to themselves. “Thanks for everything guys.”

“Don’t mention it.” Taemin said.

“I actually thought you guys forgot about today.” He chuckled and looked at his feet. “I thought everyone hated me or something. No one wanted to talk to me and everyone was always busy.”

“Aw, don’t be sad hyung. It was all just an act.” Taemin patted him on the back.

Key pointed to Jinhee. “It was Jinhee’s idea to ignore you for a week. She said it’d be fun.”

“No I didn’t!” Jinhee pushed Key’s finger away.

“Whatever it is, I just wanted to say thanks.” Jonghyun opened his arms wide. “Group hug?”

Everyone gave him a disapproving face and started to walk away. “Ew, what even …” “Ugh.” He heard them mutter as they scattered. All of them went; except Jinhee. She stood there and smiled.

He felt like an idiot with his hands still in that position. He was about to bring them back to his side when she hugged him. He wrapped his arms around her before letting go and giving her a thankful smile.

“Okay guys, I think we should go. I’ll drive you guys home.” Minho said.

They all started to grab their belongings and one by one made their exit. “Bye Jonghyun hyung!”

“Bye.” Jonghyun said to each one of them as they went out the door. He waited till the doors of the lift closed before going back in.

He went to the balcony and chuckled. He could hear Taemin’s voice from there. “But I want to sit in the front~~”

He watched as Minho’s car drove off and let out a big sigh.

Jinhee pulled on a beige nightgown after a warm bath and went over to her vanity table to brush her hair. She smiled to herself thinking about what happened during the day. She was more than pleased that the surprise party went smoothly.

There was a knock on the door. “Yes?”

The door creaked open and her father stuck his head around the door. “I’m going to sleep okay sweetheart? You should too. Your brother’s already halfway there.”

Jinhee chuckled. “Alright. I’ll go to bed soon. Goodnight appa.”

“Goodnight.” He smiled and closed her door. She could hear him walk down the stairs. He liked sleeping on the couch more since it was easier for him to fall asleep to the sound of the television instead of the silence of a room. Once she hears snoring along with the murmuring of the television, she’ll know he’s already asleep.

She switched off the lights, leaving only the night light on and bounced onto her bed. Just before she could fall back onto her pillow, there was a tap on the window. Her curtains were closed, so she didn’t know if there was really someone there, or if it was her imagination. She waited.

The tapping started again. This time, the tapping was in a rhythm. So she knew it was a person. Problem is, who. The only people who used the ladder as a means to get to her room were Luna and Taemin.

“Jinhee!” Someone whisper-shouted from the window. She got up and the lights. Slowly, she pulled the curtain from its middle partition and peeked out.

“Jinhee.”

“Jonghyun oppa?” She crinkled her eyebrows. She opened the curtains all the way and slid the glass window open. “What are you doing here?” She whispered.

“I wanted to see you.” Jonghyun said, sitting on the window still.

She sighed. “That’s nice but, at this timing? Here? Through my window?”

“Nice dress by the way.” He said looking at her nightgown. She covered herself with her arms and pulled one side of the curtain to cover herself.

He chuckled and held her hand. “Can you come with me? I need to tell you something important. Now. ”

“What? No.” She pulled her hand away. She looked at him as if he were crazy.

“Please. It’s really important.”Jinhee fell for his puppy eyes. “Okay. Wait here.” Jinhee closed the curtains again.

The clock showed 10:50PM. Jang Jinhee you must be crazy. She said to herself. She pulled on a long black cardigan over her nightgown and a pair of shorts underneath. Grabbing a new pair of sandals from her closet, Jinhee turned off the lights. She opened the curtains again. Jonghyun was already waiting below.

Jinhee climbed out her window and went down the ladder slowly. Halfway, she faced him. “Stop looking up my dress!”

“Sorry.”

Jonghyun didn’t even give her time to stand properly when she reached the ground. He pulled her and they quickly made their way. “Where are you taking me?” She called from behind him.

“Just follow me.” He said over his shoulder.

His car was parked 10 houses down the road. They got in and he started driving. “You’re not going to do anything to me right?” She asked.

“Jinhee …”

“Hehe, just kidding. I trust you.”

 The ride took 20 minutes before they finally arrived. Once they got out of the car, Jonghyun held Jinhee’s hand and walked her to the place. “Isn’t this the park you brought us to before?” She stopped and pulled his hand.

“Yup. Why are you stopping. Let’s go.”

Jonghyun kept glancing back and looking at Jinhee. She was looking around and covering herself with the cardigan. He chuckled.

He brought her to the place where they went previously; where they almost kissed. 

“Why are we here?” Jinhee asked. “So we could see the moon.” He kept his gaze there.

“You said you wanted to tell me something right?” She tugged on his sleeve.

He let out a breath. “Yeah. I-I’ll tell you that later. Anyway uh, how did you know my birthdate?” He wasn’t ready to tell her just yet. And changing the topic was the only solution he could think of.

“Oh your plate number. That’s your birthdate right? KJH0408. KJH stands for Kim Jonghyun and 0408 is your birthdate!” She said with a smug look on her face.

He nodded his head slowly. “Smart.”

“Thanks. Did you really think I was angry at you?” She cocked her head to the side to look at him. He was still looking at the moon.

He chuckled and nodded. “Yeah. I mean you don’t usually act that way and when you did, it was scary.”

“Hehe. Sorry.”

After minutes of silence, Jonghyun finally mustered up his courage and turned, facing Jinhee. He held both of her hands in his, making her face him as well. He took a deep breath.

“H-how do you feel about me?” He asked. Jinhee was taken aback by the question. “Oh. I … I like you, you’re a great friend.”

Friend. He thought. He hated that word more each time he heard it.

“Okay … I have to tell you something.” He started. She nodded and paid attention to him. “I don’t know how or when it started but I …” He could feel his heart pounding crazily.

“I like you Jinhee.”

He blushed after finally saying those words. Jinhee just stood there; shocked from what he just said. Jonghyun’s heart felt like it was crushed looking at her reaction.

“It’s okay if you only think of me as a friend. It’s okay if you don’t like me back.” He said softly and looked to the ground.  

After a while, he heard Jinhee chuckling softly. She cupped his face and brought it up to face her.

“I like you too.”

She blushed as well and hugged him before he could say anything. His eyes widened and his mouth parted. He grabbed Jinhee’s shoulders and pulled away from the hug. “Really Jinhee-ah? Really?!”

“Actually, I’ve liked you ever since the last time we were here. But … I saw you with Jieun and some other girl so I thought you didn’t like—“

“Forget them, I only want you.” 

She giggled and hugged him again. He wrapped his arms around her as well and breathed a sigh of relief over her shoulder. They stood in that position for a while.

When they finally released from the hug, Jinhee was too shy to even look at Jonghyun. She was smiling but kept her gaze elsewhere.

Jonghyun clutched his chest. “My heart feels like it could jump out any moment.” Jinhee laughed and looked up at the moon, smiling.

“By the way … where’s my birthday present?” He asked.

She looked at him and bit her bottom lip. “I was so busy preparing the surprise that I forgot to buy you a present! Heh, mianhae.”

“It’s okay. I have something for you instead.”

“You’re giving me something, on your birthday?” She furrowed her eyebrows together.

Jonghyun nodded. “Close your eyes first.”

She looked at him suspiciously and closed her eyes. “Now with your eyes closed, say happy birthday Kim Jonghyun.”

Jinhee laughed and did as she was told. “HAPPY BIRTHDAY KIM JONGHYUN!”

Then she froze.

She felt something soft on her lips.

She opened her eyes. Their lips were touching. Jonghyun’s eyes were closed and one hand was on her right cheek. Jinhee closed her eyes again and pressed her lips softly back on his.

Jonghyun’s lips curved into a smile and he pulled away slowly. He watched as her eyelids fluttered open.  

“Thanks. That was the best present ever.” He said. She blushed and playfully hit his chest. He pulled her in for another hug.

“I should send you home now. It’s late.” They walked to Jonghyun’s car and he drove her home. The ride was somewhat awkward; both of them not knowing what to say.

Jonghyun parked his car a distance away from her house like before, and they walked to her house, hand in hand. They sneaked around to the back where she could climb back up her window.

“My birthday’s almost over.” Jonghyun looked at his watch. “Did you enjoy it?” Jinhee asked.

“Of course. My wish even came true.” He said.

“Hmm? What was your wish?”

“To spend the last few minutes of my birthday with you.” Jinhee giggled. “That wasn’t really your wish, was it?”

“It was part of my wish. I’m sweet, aren’t I?” He smiled.

She rolled her eyes. “If you do say so yourself.”

“Guess I’ll go now, goodnight oppa.”

“Goodnight Jinhee.”

She climbed two steps up the ladder before coming back down. She got on her toes and gave Jonghyun a kiss on the cheek. Jonghyun touched his cheek and smiled. “Happy birthday.” She wished him again and climbed up the ladder to her room.
