What She Never Told Him

the day we fell in love.

“Can I see it?” Sena, Miyoon’s corworker, questioned eagerly upon the woman’s arrival. Before Miyoon could even react, she was mauled against the wall. Normally, she would snap her offender’s arm in half but since it was only Sena, she decided to let it slide.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” Miyoon replied nonchalantly as she broke free from Sena’s now loosened grasp. She clocked in and made her way to the break room to store away her lunch for the day.

“Ohhh, come on. Everyone in the country knows about it. Don’t you dare hold out on me now.” Sena warned seriously as she followed her like a lost puppy.

“It’s not even a big deal.” the latter declared monotonously as she shook her head in disapproval.

“Not a big deal?” she repeated back in stagnation. “Since when was getting engaged to a superstar athlete not a big deal?!”

“Shhh!” Miyoon hissed as she pressed a finger against her lips. “You’re going to disrupt the patients.”

“All the children are up anyways,” Sena defended as she rolled her eyes. “Now spill it. I want to hear every single detail. How did he propose? Where did he propose? Were there people around? How big is the ring? Let me see, let me see.”

Sena was trying to grab Miyoon’s left hand where the engagement ring was supposed to be and when she did, her face fell. “Omo, w-where is it?” she shrieked, flipping her hand back and forth. Then she lifted up her right hand but there was no ring there either.

“Are you talking about this?” Miyoon quirked a brow and pulled on the silver chain wrapped around her neck. It was tucked under her uniform and when the ring was displayed, Sena was not as excited as she thought she’d be.

She expected a huge, showy ring with a large diamond in the center but instead all that met her eyes was a simple and plain sterling silver ring with an infinite symbol in the middle. “You’ve gotta be kidding me. That’s what he proposed to you with? What a scrooge.”

Miyoon glanced at the ring, nearly going crosseyed before she smiled. “Ani. He proposed to me with this expensive ring that had two small diamonds and a ginormous one but I told him it was too much for me.”

“You what? Yah, engagement rings are meant to be flashy,” Sena snapped as she pinched Miyoon’s arm.

“Yah,” Miyoon whined as she pried her fingers from her flesh. “Does it look like I want to be robbed? I don’t need to be prancing around with a ring that people would kill for. Besides, I think this ring has much more sentimental value and that’s what’s important.”

“Aish, no wonder there were no photos of your ring.” Sena scoffed, causing Miyoon to scowl at her. She was about to slap the back of the woman’s head when someone knocked. They both glanced at the doorway and Miyoon rolled her eyes and her teeth.

“Sena-ah, I brought breakfast for us.” the man chimed sweetly.

“Omo, oppa.” Sena squeaked as she glanced over to Miyoon nervously. “I-I thought we were going to go out for lunch instead.”

“I know but I missed you too much.” he cooed as he entered.

“Chen ge, you’re so greasy. Shut up, would you?” Miyoon spat, annoyed as she crossed her arms against her chest and crinkled her nose, apprehensively.

“Well you know what, mei? No one cares what you think.” Chen rebutted as he stuck his tongue out at her.

“I am going to kill you,” Miyoon threatened and as she lunged forward, Sena quickly blocked the pathway and stopped her.

“Can’t the two of you just be mature for once?” she nagged as she sent them both pointed looks.

“He started it.” Miyoon gnarled, hmphing.

“Me? You were the one who called me greasy first!” Chen gawked back, unwilling to take the blame.

“The truth hurts, doesn’t it?” she mocked with a smug grin.

“I am going to tell the guys about this!” he announced.

“Go ahead. Look at the baby already going to cry to the geges.” next, Miyoon imitated the crying sound of babies and Chen clamped his jaw shut tightly. “Tch, no one told you to come date my friend. This is what you’ll have to deal with so it up. You loser.”

“Yah, I’m going crazy because of you.” he growled, pointing an accusing finger at the younger woman.

“I. Don’t. Care.” she mused happily before she skipped out of the room.

“That little brat,” Chen hissed as he kicked the air.

“Oppa, if you keep fighting with Miyoon every time you come and visit, I think it’s better if you didn’t come at all. I don’t want the children seeing any of this.” Sena sighed as she hung her head low.

The couple had met a few months back when Chen and the rest of Miyoon’s geges dropped by because they had decided to pay her visit before they’d be drowned in work and business. Chen had gotten lost since he had the attention span of a squirrel and was found by Sena and a few children she had just taken to the cafeteria.

One could say it was love at first sight for both parties.

They had talked and everything was perfect until Miyoon discovered this fact and since then, she’s been bothering and pestering her troll-faced gege non-stop as payback for all the times he had wronged her. Like a moment ago, that was just one example out of dozens.

Although, Miyoon didn’t want to admit it, she was glad that Sena and Chen were dating. She could see him becoming a more mature and serious man because of her friend and to know Sena’s smiles were because of him warmed her heart.

She had met Sena during her senior year at the university. At first, their relationship was pretty awkward. They had been paired up together to study and write a report on the human brain and after countless of hours reviewing things they knew like the back of their hands, they had grown accustomed to each others’ presence.

They begun spending time together outside of campus and the more they conversed about topics unrelated to school and their studies, the more mutual things they discovered to have in common. And the fact that they both had landed permanent internship positions at the same children’s hospital only strengthened, deepened and lengthened their friendship.

Miyoon was still earning her PhD which would take a couple more years while Sena was studying to be a nurse.

“But, baby.” Chen pouted cutely as he entrapped her into a back hug. “I’d miss you too much. Give me another chance. The next time I see Xiamei, I won’t bicker with her. I promise.”

“Okay, only because I’d miss you too.” Sena agreed, giggling softly.

“Aigoo, they’re so cheesy that I think I have just become lactose and tolerant.” Miyoon chuckled quietly out in the hall before she tip-toed to the children’s playroom.

“Myungsoo! Are you almost done with that cupcake order yet?” the head baker shouted as she poked her head into the kitchen.

“Almost done, boss.” he assured as he quickly finished piping the last of the chocolate mousse icing onto the cupcake. He dusted his hands after and then picked up the small bear decor formed from fondu. Holding his breath, he carefully stuck it on and smiled. Over the last four hours, he had been completing an order a customer had placed.

He had to bake and decorate five hundred cupcakes and how he hadn’t gone insane while doing so he wasn’t sure. With much care, he packed the delectable desserts which were still out into the boxes. Once he finished he exhaled and removed his apron. It was almost seven p.m,  the deadline he had to meet.

“Made it just in time.” Myungsoo chirped joyously.

As he started cleaning the station he had used, he could hear the bells from outside, indicating a consumer coming in, chiming. He didn’t know why but he felt the urge to check and he peered through the small window of the door. Suddenly he felt his heart stop and his brain shut off.

“Ah, are you here for the cupcake order?” the cashier asked brightly.

“Neh, I’m Hana. I believe my brother has already informed you that I would be picking them up.” she answered politely with the corner of her lips tugged upwards.

“Of course, of course. Is your van parked out back or in the front?”

“Van?” Hana repeated a little befuddled.

“She’s rather cute,” Myungsoo chuckled to himself, enjoying the the adorable expression on her face.
