What She Never Told Him

Throughout her first two college years, Miyoon found it hard to adjust. Everything was so new to her and becoming a doctor was definitely more work than she had expected it to be. But it was what her parents signed her up for and there was no way she was going to back out of it now. And with what had happened to harabeoji nearly three years ago, Miyoon wanted to make sure she could save as many lives as she could.

And what better way is there than to become a doctor? So in a way, Miyoon was glad with her parents’ arrangements for her. Even though her studies would be time consuming, with him cheering her on always she knew she would be able to achieve her goals.

Also Miyoon wasn’t as close to Taela anymore since they were studying different things but nonetheless they did remain friends. For his sake at least.

She was pretty much on her own now and because she didn’t depend on Kris as much since that day, there weren’t many people she could turn to when she needed help especially when her best friend was still thousands of miles away. She had learned to depend on herself and nobody else.

Her other geges were all busy dealing with their own personal lives and after some time, she got use to it. Why? Because her life was going to move on with or without them, there was no room for stalling. She had to accept it. And Myungsoo’s group of friends? She barely saw any of them around either because once they had graduated in their respective fields they went on doing their own things in who knows where.

Miyoon assumed they still kept in touch through Sungjong who she did run into every now and then for he attended the same university as her. And it was nice at times to run into a familiar face because Miyoon didn’t really like making new friends unless she had to. Like for projects and all of that stuff.

When times got hard, Miyoon often thought about how much harder it was for Yunhee and Myungsoo. And that gave her the will to continue on through her vigorous studies.

She knew they were struggling because just as he said, Myungsoo had video-chatted her when he could.

He reported to her about how the first few months weren’t easy for them. Especially when they were severely homesick. Miyoon also heard about how her unnie had to get her own personal English translator and tutor. However, that didn’t hinder Yunhee from reaching her goals and reaching them was exactly what she did.

Myungsoo had told her that Yunhee was going to graduate and with the smile on his face, that was all Miyoon needed to make it out. He smiled because he was proud of Yunhee and on the inside Miyoon was really hoping that when her time came, he would smile just the same, perhaps even wider for her. But alas, she had to complete her studies and pass before that happened.

And that meant she had to do a lot of studying. No shopping, lounging around, goofing off. None of that nonsense. But today, there was an exception. Why? Because it was the day they were finally going to return and lucky for Miyoon, it was break time for her school which meant she had time to spare.

Thanks to a special arrangement, Yunhee was able to graduate in late February as long as she had someone oversee her work. This led to the early arrival of hers and Myungsoo’s.

Of course Miyoon was excited to see Yunhee again but she was much more excited to be reunited with her one love. Even if he didn’t know that was what he was to her.

On that morning, Miyoon woke up wearing a bright smile. She washed up and headed down for a quick bite. Everyone in her house had gone off to work which left her alone. As she experienced giddiness and anxiousness at the same time, she discovered she was way to excited to eat anything.

Therefore, she skipped around to try and shake off the nerves instead. “Are you okay, Miyoon?” Mrs. Park suddenly popped in.

Miyoon was obviously a little startled as she held onto her chest. “Omo,” she breathed. “You scared me halmeoni.”

Mrs. Park chortled, “Says the girl who loves watching gory horror films.”

“Hey, you never know.” She grinned. And although it felt like Miyoon was alone now, there was always one person still by her side and that would be Mrs. Park. The woman whom she refers to as halmeoni. The same woman who was related to Lee Howon. But even so, Miyoon never heard much about him either. Not that she cared.

“Oh right, isn’t today the day?” Mrs. Park questioned with a raised brow. Just thinking about it some more, caused Miyoon’s cheeks to flush as she nodded shyly. The elder then nudged her ribs, “Now you won’t be as lonely, huh?”

“I was never lonely.” She defended but that earned a scoff from Mrs. Park. “It’s true. I was never that lonely because I had halmeoni!” Miyoon smiled as she engulfed the woman into an air-tight hug.

Suddenly there was a honk and the two of them knew that Miyoon’s ride to the airport had arrived. “Make sure you don’t pass out from all the excitement.” She teased.

Miyoon scrunched up her face as they strolled over to the door, “I would never.” She assured.

“Be safe, dear.”

“Yes, halmeoni.” Miyoon replied before darting off to the van where Mr. Zheng waved to Mrs. Park. She waved back and once Miyoon was in, he drove off.

Sitting in the vehicle, the adults were all excited to finally see Yunhee again. But none of them compared to how excited Miyoon was feeling about being reunited with Myungsoo. As she sat there thinking about what she’d say, she started picturing his face and the number of video-chats they had.

There was no doubt that he had become more handsome and Miyoon couldn’t wait to see him in person. She bit back her smile as she stared at the wallpaper consisting of her and Myungsoo on his nineteenth birthday. The last birthday she was able to spend with him in person. Seeing this reminded her of his birthday again which was only less than two weeks away.

Miyoon had been planning his party since she knew when they were coming and she had managed to get all the small things done. Like food and decorations. All she had to do left was invite the guests. And knowing Myungsoo, Miyoon had a great guess at the first six people he’d love to see there most. And she was determined to do whatever it took to get them to his surprise party. Every single one of them including Lee Howon. The person she was fond of least.

But with all the years she had to grow up, Miyoon matured. Sure, she was still a little childish but everyone was. And hopefully, Miyoon prayed that Hoya would have matured as well. She prayed that he’d be nicer and less cruel but since she hadn’t heard or seen him, she didn’t know. She could only keep her fingers crossed that what had happened with her, happened to him too.

She didn’t want to bear grudges but Miyoon couldn’t make any promises if he was the same jerk he was back then.

As they finally arrived at the airport, Miyoon felt her heart racing. The organ vital to life was pounding against her chest as her palms began to sweat. To keep them dry she wiped them off on her pants and tried her best to remain calm. Don’t freak out, Xia. Nothing is going to be different. Just be you. She told herself.

People started coming out and as she scanned the crowed she spotted two familiar faces. Not wanting to seem too obvious, she decided to greet the female first.

“Unnie!” Miyoon shouted as she sprinted towards Yunhee while Mr. Zheng, Ms. Kim along with Mr. Ahn all walked behind.

“Xiazi.” Yunhee answered hugging the younger woman.

Miyoon felt a little strange that Yunhee had used her actual name instead of ‘Xiaxia’ the nickname she had given her but she waved it off as no big deal as she continued the embrace.

“Myungsoo!” Myungsoo stated not wanting to feel left out. The girls turned to him as Miyoon giggled. He frowned and watched their
