What She Never Told Him

mermaid princess.

In a blink of an eye, it was already June which meant that school would be coming to an end soon, for some it would be permanent and others temporary but nonetheless these rowdy high school kids could not contain their excitement for that to happen. Not much changed over those few short months other than the relationship between Miyoon and the guys being more distanced than it has ever been.

After the whole movie incident, it was as if Hoya wasn’t the only one to ignore Miyoon. Whether the boys were doing it intentionally or not she didn’t really know. And for quite some time now, she was starting to not care. Perhaps it was also the fact that they had to get ready for the college life as well that has gotten them so distracted and out of it. But whatever it may be, as stated earlier, Miyoon could care less.

Why should she sulk and miss their friendship when she could form dozens more?

Besides with Chunji, her boyfriend of about five months by her side, she could never be down. Also with their anniversary just around the corner, she knew he would prepare something utterly cheesy and dorky for her but she didn’t mind. Because he made her feel special and she experienced nothing but happiness when she was with him.

And honestly speaking, Miyoon was looking forward for whatever he had planned. She was never the creative type so she could never really plan anything even half as decent as he can which was a bit embarrassing on her part.

She sighed and watched the clock as the seconds ticked by. She really wanted school to end because the air conditioner in the damned place conveniently malfunctioned last week and it was extremely hot in the class she was in.

Miyoon tried to be as immobilized as possible recalling that the more movement one makes, the hotter they will become and she was already hot as is by simply sitting there. And her skin was starting to feel sticky, something she was not fond of. Her sleeves were also pushed up to her elbows and her hair in a high pony-tail, allowing her neck to breathe. It was just too warm for her to be wearing her long hair down.

Then Miyoon felt a vibration in her bag and quickly glanced at their teacher who was also sitting at her desk, impaired by the scorching heat. Seeing it was safe, she pulled out her phone and opened the message. It was from Chunji. Her brows arched up because he never texted during school hours. And with school only a minute or so from ending, she was surprised he couldn’t wait till after to avoid the risk of getting scolded and his phone taken away.

Must be important. She opened the message and saw the words: I miss you so much, on her screen. She couldn’t help but scoff because she knew it must have taken him all of his courage to send her a text during this time of day and the thought of how flustered and frightened Chunji must have been was adorable to Miyoon.

And it was just to send her a simple text message like this. Her heart was truly touched by his little actions. For at the end of the day, they really added up into something greater.

She chuckled, softly, and typed out her response as fast as she could. Finished, she slipped the phone back into her bag and the dismissal bell rang on schedule. “No homework for today.” Her teacher declared as the students packed their belongings, lazily.

“It’s not like I was going to do it if we had any anyways.” Miyoon muttered, escaping the sauna room. When she threw the door open she felt the ventilation of the spacious room. Why her teacher decided to close the door she had no clue and as long as she was out, it didn’t matter to her.

Miyoon made her way to her locker while fanning herself with one hand. She really couldn’t wait to get into the car where she expected the air conditioner to be on full blast in order to keep her from melting into a pool of goo and guck.

As she strolled ever so slowly to her locker almost dragging her bag on the floor, a hand came over and took the darned thing from her. “Miyoon, it isn’t even heavy. Why are you making it look like you have a ton of bricks in here?” Chunji chuckled, tossing her bag into the air.

“It’s so hot that’s why.” She answered as she opened her locker. “Aish, I don’t even know why we have to bring our bag still when we’re obviously not going to get any more work.” She slammed her locker shut after stuffing her empty bag in there and pouted at her boyfriend. “It’s a pain in the—”

“Language.” Chunji cut in, pressing a finger to her lips.

Miyoon frowned deeper and swatted his hand away, “I was going to say neck. I know you don’t appreciate profanities. It’s not like I use them that much.”

“It’s because I have influenced you in a positive manner,” he grinned as he tapped her nose.

“Don’t do that, I’m all sweaty.” She whined.

“Tch, so what? At least you didn’t wear makeup today.” He pointed out.

“I know. It would probably have been ruined by now and I would end up looking like a—” As she spun around, Miyoon was shocked to find Taela wearing a scowl under her spoiled makeup. “Clown.” She finished.

“Miyoonie, see what happens when you tell me not to buy waterproof products?” she shrieked. As people walked by chuckling and giggling, Taela only shrieked louder. “What’s so funny!?” she screamed, chasing them away.

Miyoon was about to shield her ears, when Chunji took it upon himself to protect his girlfriend’s hearing abilities.

At the sweet gesture, Miyoon shifted her body to give him a peck on the cheek. He blushed and lowered his hands when there was nothing to harm Miyoon’s ears. “I only said they were useless. I mean what are the chances of your face getting hit by water.” she defended. “If you wanted to buy them that bad, you could have.”

“But still, Miyoonie. You know I listen to you. Now I look awful.” Taela wept, not helping her situation at all.

“So why don’t you go wash it off in the girls’ bathroom?” Chunji asked.

“Because I— Oh yeah, why didn’t I think of that!? Aish oppa, where were you an hour ago? I had to sit through my lesson like this.” Taela sniggered, stomping to the nearest washroom.

“Well, it was common sense.” He muttered.

“Hey, don’t be so mean.” Miyoon commented, punching his shoulder.

“Hey, I wasn’t being mean. Why did you hit me?”

“It’s common sense to hit a smarty-pants.” She retorted. “Wah, imagine if I came to school with makeup.”

“But you didn’t because you have this,” he stated, tapping his skull. “In fact after today, I don’t think you need to wear any of that anymore. You look perfect just like that.” Chunji gushed, caressing her cheek.

“Stop being so cheesy.” Miyoon said, biting back her smile.

“Who’s being mean now?” he cocked a brow at her, tangling their fingers.

“Chunji,” she began, motioning for him to come closer. “My hands are sweaty, let’s not hold hands.”

“You act like I care. Everyone’s hands get sweaty with weather like this. It’s normal, I don’t mind as long as it’s you I’m holding.” Chunji smiled.

“You’re just a little amazing, did you know that?” Miyoon asked, heart thumping. And by little, she meant a lot but Chunji didn’t need her to say that for him to figure it out.

“Look, you’re learning how to be dorky.” He teased, as he pulled her towards the doors.

“Yeah, yeah.” She chuckled. And once they entered the blazing out sun, Miyoon could feel herself growing warmer. She searched the street and found her car surrounded by a hoard of hormonally crazed teenaged girls. “This could only mean one thing.”

Miyoon turned to Chunji who knew also what was going on. “Your geges are back in town?”

“I guess so. I thought they were going to Jeju before coming home.” She replied and with the mention of the small island, Chunji’s body tensed.

“So we should say bye right here. I don’t want to be executed just yet.” He joked, releasing her hand.

“Executed? My geges would never. Maybe torture but never execute.” Miyoon teased as she pinched his cheeks. She had mentioned her relationship with Chunji to the boys three months into it and although they were not pleased, if Miyoon was happy there wasn’t much they could do.

And because they had met Chunji before, they were aware of his sweet, nice and caring personality. Plus, it was also clear as day that this kid was smitten by their meimei. And as long as he didn’t hurt her, they consented.

“I’ll see you this weekend, okay?”

“This weekend?” Miyoon pretended to be confused as she sent him a lost puppy look. “Do we have plans or something?”

Chunji frowned, “You forgot didn’t you?”

“Forget what? OH! The game is on tomorrow! Thanks for reminding me!” she exclaimed, slapping her palm against her forehead.

The crease in his forehead deepened. “Miyoon.”

“Aigoo, ara. It’s our anniversary. I got it, I got it. Just text me later.”

“That wasn’t funny!” Chunji nagged.

“Yes it was.” She cooed, batting her lashes at him. He faltered and smiled at her.

“Hey, twerp! It’s time to go!” Miyoon heard the commanding voice of her brother announce. Her head snapped in his direction to find Tao and Chen also. They were trying to detach themselves from the girls and it was a rather amusing sight.

“Alright, bye Chunji.” Miyoon declared as she brushed her lips on his. Then she her heels and forced her way through the swarm of girls so that she was able to reach the car. Kris opened the door letting Chen and Miyoon hop into the back. Soon, he entered the driver’s side and Tao the passenger’s.

“Why does he get to sit in the front? I’m older!” Chen nagged.

“It’s because you’re tiny and the police might mistake you as a child.” Kris reasoned.

“Haha, because I haven’t heard that one before.” He answered.

“So how was your day meimei?” Tao questioned in the midst of the bickering.

“Hot.” Miyoon responded. She looked out the window and spotted Chunji with his friends looking sullen. What’s wrong with him? For some reason she wanted to jump out of the car and go ask him but her brother already started to maneuver carefully through the group of girls still sticking on their car.

“I am never coming to get Xiazi again.” Chen snickered when a girl’s face squished up on the outside of the car.

“Why do they keep attacking us? It’s not like we’re idols.” Kris sighed.

“Well, no one asked you guys to get me. If Mr. Kam came it would have been less troublesome.” Miyoon spat.

“Whoa, easy there tiger. Why are you so moody?” Kris asked.

Miyoon inhaled and exhaled, “It’s probably the weather.” And his upset expression. Is he not telling me something?

While back at the school her boyfriend was still there with his friends. “Have you told Miyoon yet?”

The latter sighed and shook his head, “I think I’m going to do it on our anniversary. Guys, I think I love her which is going to make this even harder.” His friends gave him pats on the back, trying to assure him that everything will be okay. Chunji faked a smile while in the inside he was slowly dying. How was he supposed to do this?

The alarm sound signaling that Miyoon had received a text went off and she did not want to answer it. But every two minutes it would buzz again until she checked it. “Leave me alone.” She groaned, hiding her head under a pillow. When it went off for the umpteenth, she chucked the pillow somewhere and still had her eyes closed as she felt around her bed for the phone.

Finally locating it, she turned her head and saw the message was from Chunji. She squinted her eyes and then read the date. She immediately shot up out of bed as a call from him came. She flattened h
