Twenty One.
Lifeline.Yewon hesitated as she felt the cool sensation linger on her palm as her hand rests on the metal handle of the door of Byunghun’s ward, pondering if she should push it open.
A loud crash and the sound of glass shattering makes her jump in fright as she hurriedly threw open the door. Blood drained from her face at the sight that she was greeted with inside the ward. Byunghun was clutching his head in despair and from the look of it he had just swept his glass of water as well as the jug off the overbed table and the fine china vase off the bedside table. The floor was littered with tiny shards of glass from the damage as Yewon carefully steps over them in the black heels.
“Byunghun ah what’s wrong? Did you hurt yourself?” Yewon frantically brings Byunghun into her arms as she sat on the edge of the bed, his hair gently trying to calm him down.
“Make the... p-pain stop... Please...” Byunghun chokes out in agony.
Everything hurt. And Byunghun never felt so helpless in his life not even after being his ual violation incident. Everything seemed bleak to him now and he couldn’t help but throw childish tantrums at everyone around him. He didn’t want to, but he really couldn’t help it. The said man was physically, mentally and emotionally exhausted. He wasn’t someone who tolerates pain very well be it emotional or physical pain and this accident had left him scarred adversely.
Yewon was panicking, her hands started trembling unconsciously. She wasn’t sure what hurt and how she could help her distressed son out.
“Byunghun, Byunghun listen to me.” She grabbed his arms tightly and put her forehead on Byunghun’s own to get his attention with Byunghun thrashing around violently in her death grip.
“Omma’s here. Omma’s here, alright?”
And Byunghun slowly relaxed in her hold as he stared back at Yewon with his deep brown eyes, full of innocence just like when she first held him in her arms on the winter morning of his birth.
“Omma…….?” Byunghun whispered, the word rolling out of his tongue like a foreign language.
“Yes, omma is here, I’m Byunghunnie’s omma. I’ll never leave you again.” Yewon held her head low, what did she deserve to be back in Byunghun’s life again though? She was the one that abandoned her own child first, leaving her boyfriend and son to survive on their own.
But Byunghun didn’t mind, his finally had his mother by his side now. After 20 years, he finally had a mother. The pediatrician bawled into his petite mother’s chest.
“Omma I can’t do this anymore. They won’t give me the painkillers... Omma… Am I a bad kid? Is that why you left? Is that why appa lied? Is that why I have to be in pain now? I’m a bad kid omma, this is my karma right?”
Yewon’s felt as though her heart was ripped out of her heart. Byunghun didn’t deserve this, he was the sweetest child she has met.
“Sorry to interupt but Lee Byunghun has to go for his physiotherapy session right now.” A nurse pops her head into the ward and reminded the duo before getting a nod from Yewon who invites the nurse in.
Byunghun glances wordlessly as the nurse prepares a wheelchair that had been lying in the corner of the room for as long as he can remember. He dreaded the day he would have to actually put his bottom on the seat, it was just a constant reminder that his legs were useless now. It was a reminder that he had to do physiotherapy, and the treatment would hurt, it was a painful torture. He was afraid.
“No!” He suddenly yelled loudly as he pushed the nurse who was trying to help him into the wheelchair roughly, startling her as she frantically bowed apologetically.
“No no no no! I don’t want to do this!” Tears started to run down his flawless complexion once again, he lost count of how many times he had cried over the past few days. He wished the loss of tears would dehydrate and kill him.
Yewon tries to calm her son down but to no avail as she watched in horror as Byunghun started to throw things around
