Chapter Thirty

By His Side

Minzy couldn't believe the great change in GD. He really did own up to his words after the celebration. Never had she seen him work so hard. Never had she seen him fully take weight of the kingdom on his shoulders. Though it was nothing short of a miracle to see GD do so, she couldn't help the feelings of being so useless. From having full responsiblity to having only one responsilbity of siting next to him on the throne began to take it's toll on her.

"That was the last person for today my highnesses," Teddy informed the king and queen.

"Thank you Teddy. After you do the inventory we've discussed earlier you are relieved of your duties today," GD nodded. Teddy bowed in understanding as he made his way out as GD sighed with a grin on his face before turning to the queen. "Today was a great day," his grin spread into a smile as he reached for her hand giving it a light squeeze.

"We did," she could only give him a half hearted grin as she lightly retreated her hand away.

"Is there something wrong my queen," he asked somewhat puzzled by her strange attitude she had been having for the past couple of days.

"It's nothing," she lied as she stood to her feet. "Great job today," she did her best to give him an encouraging smile before making her leave.

Sighing as she made her way throught the hallways alone, she couldn't help but frown. Things were starting to turn in her favor, yet at the same time they weren't. Shaking her head at her confusing thoughts she realized that they had finished a bit early today. And idea came to mind, as she pivoted on one foot to turn as she ran right into someone.

"Minzy," the king breathed as he caught hold of her to steady her.

Catching her balance she stepped away from his hold as she gave him an apologetic smile, "My apologizes my king."

"Where are you off to? Your bedroom is the other way."

"Nowhere really. Have a good night," she held her smile as she walked past him.

"Minzy," GD called after her causing her to stop in her tracks. He watched as she slightly turned to look back at him and took this opportunity to walk up to her.

"Yes?"

"Could I..." he didn't know exactly what to say. But he knew he had to say something, "Could I..."

She gave him an encouraging nod to continue, "Uhmm..."

"Could I...walk you to where ever you are headed to?"

She couldn't help to think of how strange it was of him to ask such a request as she stood staring at him suspiciously, "Why?"

"Uh..." he scratched the back of his head not knowing what kind of explanation to give her. "I just feel like...going on a little walk is all and thought it'd be nice to have a little company?"

She sighed as she shook her head, "Maybe another day."

"Why not," he asked somewhat offended at how quick she was to turn him down.

"GD you wouldn't want to go where I am about to go."

"Are you sure," he challenged her.

"Yes I'm positive," she nodded to reaffirm her thoughts.

He huffed a frustrated sigh as he looked at her seriously, "Minzy please just let me walk you, that is all I ask."

She felt her insides starting to knot up as he gave her a serious look. She couldn't help but have an inward battle with herself. As much as she wouldn't mind him walking her, it was her final destination that was telling her not to.

"Minzy...please," he softly spoke up.

Biting her lower lip she finally nodded and walked past him.

The walk was quiet between the pair with nothing but the clicking of their heels down the hallways. Neither one saying a word as GD continued to match her every stride. He didn't want to pressure her into telling him exactly where she was heading, but at the same time he couldn't help feeling curious. Why was she so hesitant something so harmless as a simple walk in the palace? It wasn't until they stood in front of the metal gates that it dawned on him.

"Okay thank you for escorting me," Minzy politely said before pushing the gates open. Before she stepped forward she turned and grinned at him, "You may head back inside." As she gazed at his face, she couldn't read exactly read his expression. It looked empty. Shrugging her shoulders as she really didn't know what else to do, she then made her way into the grave site.

A small smile graced her lips as she got down on her knees and began to pick at the grass patches and pull away the flowers from the day before. "How are you doing my love?" She sighed as she brushed her hand across the cleared dirt of her son's grave. "I don't know why I always ask you that question when I know you're in heaven where it's filled with nothing but peace and happiness. But your mommy here can't help to ask anyways." She sighed as she laid onto her side, propping herself on her hand as she lay staring at the dirt before her.

A small breeze brushed up against her allowing her to close her eyes for a slight moment. Doing so she couldn't help her thoughts from flashing back to her miscarriage of watching her baby boy walk away from her. The feelings of pain and hurt started to overcome her at the memory of her shouting for him to come back to her. Though it was coming up to her second year anniversary of losing her son, it felt as if it was yesterday.

"Minzy," she heard someone softly say.

Opening her now blurry eyes, she looked to see GD crouching across from her. Seeing him, she quickly sat up onto her knees and brushed the tears away from her eyes. "What are you doing here? You only asked to walk me and that was it," she growled out of embarassment.

He nodded in understanding as he took a seat, "I know."

"You know, yet you still followed me out here," she raised her voice a notch louder.

"Minzy I understand..."

"NO! No you don't," she snapped as she stood to her feet. "You don't understand anything!"

He sighed as he stood, "But I'm trying."

"Why?!"

"Because it's my responsiblity."

She shook her head as she glared at him, "Your responsibility is the kingdom and the kingdom only."

"What are you saying," he asked softly.

"I'm saying not to look after me. I'm not your responsiblity the kingdom is!"

"Minzy I don't understand what's going on."

"I don't either," she breathed as she let the tears fall. "I don't...understand what's going on...either." She began to sob in her hands as she fell to her knees crying. Feeling strong arms around her, she pushed them away, "Please don't! You're confusing me."

"What do you mean," he asked as he knelt by her.

"You don't understand what this grave means to me do you," she continued to sob into her hands. "This is my reminder of who you are to me. This is one of the reasons I can't let you take responsiblity of me." Moving her hands away she pointed to her son's grave as she began to shout at him, "He was my son! We needed you and you left us!" She bit her lower lip as she tried to control her sobs, "I went through hell and back when it comes to you! I should hate you for the rest of my life. But...but you know what..."

"What," he softly spoke to encourage her to finish.

Closing her eyes the thoughts of Daesung's smiling face came to mind, "But...my son won't let me." She let out a sigh of relief as her shoulders slumped forward. "He won't let me hate you," she mumbled as tears continued to stream down her face.

There was a moment of silence before GD finally spoke, "Minzy..."

"What," she sniffled as she diverted his gaze.

He sighed reaching for her hands and taking it in his as he tilted his head to the side to catch her gaze, "Thank you for not hating me." He saw the mixture of pain and hurt as he continued, "You did go through so much and I know you're still going through so much. This is one of the reasons I'm trying to step up. I...I don't want to see you hurting because of me anymore."

"But why GD? Why do you care now when it's too late," she asked.

Cupping her face in his hands he gave her an encouraging smile, "Because you deserve better."

She coughed a laugh at his cheesy comment making him chuckle, "Really?!"

"Yes really. Minzy you deserve the world," he grinned. "So let me be the new me and take responsiblity of you."

"I'm not a baby or a child," she teased as she was starting to compose herself.

"No you're not," he smiled before placing a loving kiss to the top of her head. "But you are the queen and my wife."

She couldn't help her chest from tightening from him calling her his wife. "Umm...I would prefer you just call me queen."

"Why? It's true, you are my wife."

She sighed as she shook her head, "My king I would feel more comfortable if we refer to each other as acquaintances."

"Ouch," he frowned as he placed a fist to his chest.

"Or friends," she offered as a compromise.

He gazed at her intently for a moment before nodding, "Okay we can be friends."

"Thanks," she gave him a grateful smile before she stood to her feet. "It is time for me to retire to bed."

"Okay friend, let me you," he smiled as he jumped to his feet. She pressed her lips together as she thought about what he said. "What," he asked somewhat confused at why she was giving him a weird stare.

"Two things I need to say now that we are friends," she began. "One let's fairly share the responsilbilities of the kingdom and two let's be respectful to each other's personal space."

"Okay," he nodded to agree.

"Good," she smiled before she turned to give her son's grave one last grin before leaving.

As the pair headed back inside, they were quietly walking through the halls as GD coughed, "You know you could've just told me to share the responsibilities with you."

Minzy chuckled as she felt him bump his shoulder against her own, "What? I'm not used to having a normal conversation with you. I only know how to yell at you to get what I want across."

He chuckled as he thought about what she said, "True you have a point. We need to work on that."

She sighed as she approached her door, "Well I'm trying to get used to this new and improved you."

"Well get used to it. This new me is sticking around for good. Good night friend," GD smiled at her and waved before she could enter in her room.

She shook her head and waved before she entered into her room. Sighing as she entered her room, she felt exhausted from crying but summed up what energy she had left to get ready for her that night.

Preparing her horse, Minzy quickly turned as she heard something move from behind her. "Who's there?" She watched and waited for someone to step forward. "Show yourself! Who's there?!"

She watched as suddenly GD stepped forward into view, "Hey friend."

"My king you scared me," she breathed a sigh of relief. "What are you doing here?"

"Where are you going?"

She shook her head as she turned to jump up and onto the horse, "Nowhere special. Just go back inside and get some rest my king." Giving him a small grin she clicked her heels onto the horse and rushed off into the night.

Snuggling her son up against her, Minzy let out a deep sigh. Glancing down to her bundle of joy, she couldn't help but think of the day's events. Letting her finger tips brush against her son's chubby cheeks she grinned, "Dae your daddy and I are friends now. Are you happy?" She chuckled answering her own question, "You know if it wasn't for you I don't think I would be this nice."
