Together, Always

The Life of the Sixth Member

Irene's fear of height is known to pretty much everyone. At first, you thought it was something mild; everyone has some kind of fear of height one way or another, right? Even you who lived for the thrill rides at amusement parks. Eventually though, you found out how bad your guardian's acrophobia when you had her accompany you to sit at the edge of a hill you had found one day during one of your hikes. It was beautiful, so you wanted to share it with her.

"Unnie, I know a place that I think you'd like. Are you up for a hike?"

Irene looked up from the book she was reading, a questioning look on her face though you could detect the hidden hesitation in her expression. "Where did you find it?"

You tilted your head slightly in thought, looking at her intently. "During one of my hikes, it's not too far from here," you shrugged.

She was silent and you instantly felt bad for making her feel like she had to come with you. You recognised the look she had on and you had known her long enough to know when she didn't want to do something.

You gave her a warm, genuine smile. "It's okay if you don't want to, Unnie, I just thought you'd like it since you like looking at the sky so much," you approached her sitting figure and kissed the top of her head, your left arm around her shoulders to bring her into a side hug.

"I'm going out for a walk, Unnie. I'll be back before dawn, is that okay?"

You pulled back from the hug to look at her, wanting to read from expression whether she'd let you go or not.

She gave you a small smile and nodded, sitting up straighter so she could reach your cheek to pat them affectionately. She was grateful that you didn't push the matter but she also felt guilty, even just a little. Nevertheless, she didn't want to hold you back. "Be careful, Eli-ah."

You gave her a cheeky smile. "Always, Unnie."

You kissed her cheek before patting her shoulder in farewell, letting go of her and proceeding to walk towards the door. You were about to open the front door when you were stopped by the oldest.

"Wait!" You turned back to see her already on her feet, an anxious but determined look on her face. "I'll come with you. I want to see the place."

You furrowed your eyebrows in confusion. "Unnie, you don't have to if you don't want to. Don't feel guilty about it, okay? I'm not upset, I promise."

This was the most determined look she had given outside of training and you realised this probably had something to do with her acrophobia. She had connected the dots when you said a place you had found during your hike.

"No, I... I  want to come and see the place."

You hesitated for a little before letting out a sigh, giving her an encouraging smile. "Well, I'll wait for you here then."

She gave you one last smile before turning around and going into your shared room to change. You shook your head in amusement at her cuteness but vowed to make sure she's as comfortable as she could during the hike.

When you neared the path leading to the hill, you saw her hand began to shake in nervousness and her shoulders began to tense. You took her hand in yours and rubbed the back of it with your thumb, making her look up at you. You gave her her favourite smile.

"I'm here with you, Unnie. Come closer if you begin to feel scared, okay? Just know that I'll be next to you every step of the way."

She gave you a breathtaking smile and tiptoed to give your cheek a light peck. "Thank you."

"Always," you smiled at her before tightening your hold on her hand and beginning the track.

She walked closer and closer to your figure as the hill approached and by the time you reached the top, her arms were around your waist and her head was buried into your back, eyes squeezed shut.

She felt your chuckles which caused her to slap your stomach, which made you laugh even louder. "Unnie, how will you be able to see the view if you're hiding behind me?"

She tightened her hold as she mumbled, "I'm scared."

Your gaze softened then and you patted the hands that were on your stomach with one hand while the other wrapped around her shoulder as you twisted your body slightly so she would detach from your back.

"I know but I also know you're brave, so I know you'll be able to enjoy the view, Hyun-unnie."

She stopped fighting you then, slowly pulling back from her very tight hug. "You think so?"

You nodded while looking back at her, giving her the most reassuring look she had ever seen from you. "I know so."

She contemplated for a little before sighing out loud, slowly detaching her front from your back to stand next to you instead, arms still wrapped around your waist though she's fully facing the view now.

She knew you'll be there to help her face her fear. "You're right, this is beautiful."

She could see almost all of Seoul from here and the sunset made it even better, making her smile subconsciously.

Your lips also formed a smile looking at her awed expression. "Yeah, that's why this place reminded me of you."

She glared at you playfully before punching your stomach lightly, making you giggle. "Why are you so cheesy," she whined.

"But it's true! When I found this place I immediately thought of you and knew you'd love it."

She grumbled but the blush on her cheeks was very much evident, making you smile softly at her.

"Thank you." You knew she wasn't only thanking you for bringing her there.

You wrapped an arm around her shoulders in response, your head on top of hers. You gave her forehead a light kiss. "Together, always."

You didn't see her but you knew her beautiful smile was on her face. "Always."

Ever since then, you tried to help her face her fear slowly but surely, and you could see the progress she was making. During one of your tours, you had a small interview with the fans where they were asking who was the best at rollercoaster rides. The girls immediately pointed to you and Irene, which prompted questioning looks from the host.

"I thought Irene has a fear of heights?"

Wendy, the ever English speaker of the group, replied. "Surprisingly, she's not that scared of heights when it comes to roller coasters," she pointed at you, turning the questioning looks directed towards you instead. "I think Eli has something to do with it."

The fans cheered while you shrugged cooly in mock arrogance, prompting even more cheers and laughs throughout the venue. The rest of the members could only smile confusedly at the conversation, though Yeri could pick up bits here and there and was smiling cheekily.

"Really? How do you do that?"

You gave the host a little shrug. "I love amusement parks and I wanted to share that love with the members, so I took them to Lotte World as a celebration of our first win," you looked at the confused expression of the girls, making you smile. They were still waiting for the interpreter to do their job, so you waited for a little before you continued. "Irene had taken little steps to overcome her fear and this was one of the ways I thought could help. I told her if she tried to ride of the smaller ones and succeeded, I would buy her red bean ice cream and ramen for a week and knowing how competitive she is, I know she'd take it," you smirked and everyone laughed, with the exception of Irene who walked towards you to smack your shoulder with a loud "YAH!" when she knew what you had said.

Everyone laughed even harder at the interaction but you merely winked at her. "Ever since then, she's hooked."

Wendy shook her head. "I honestly don't know how Eli does it. She just has a way to make Irene less scared of heights, it's incredible."

You tried to suppress the blush that was trying to make their ways up your cheeks at the audience's teasings. You winked at Wendy. "What can I say, I am incredible."

Wendy just glared at you and you blew her a kiss, making the people in the room to laugh.

It was just after Yeri had joined the group that you won your first music show award, which all of you celebrated immensely. You had worked very hard, after all, so you thought it was only fitting that you celebrated it with fun. You had always loved amusement parks and you wanted to have a memory with the members of going to an amusement park and having fun together, all worries put aside. So, after you got permission from your manager and the girls' consent, much to Irene's hesitance, you bought tickets for all six of you and made your way there.

Irene thought she'd only stay behind and watch you guys have fun but no, you wanted her to experience the fun too.

"You're going up too, right Hyun-unnie?"

Her eyes widened in horror and she shook her head fervently. "Are you crazy? I'm not getting onto that monstrosity!"

You were amused beyond belief but you didn't want to voice that if you wanted to keep your head attached to your body. "But Unnie, I think this would help with your fear of heights," you persuaded, hand reaching for hers. "Besides, all of us will be there as support and you get to hold on to us, okay?"

You could just see that you were winning her over though she still hesitated. "How about we ride the small ones first? If you succeed, I'll buy you red bean ice cream and ramen for three days."

She perked up and you recognised the competitive glint lighting up in her eyes. "A week and we have a deal."

You shook your head in amusement but relented regardless. "Deal, let's go!"

The members cheered as they saw the leader coming with you and Irene could only shake her head, wondering how easy it was for her to get persuaded when it comes to you.

"Don't complain if I cut the blood circulation on your arm off, or if I deafen you with my screams. You asked for this." She warned with all seriousness which caused you to laugh loudly, though Joy shushed you so you wouldn't draw too much attention and get recognised instead.

You kissed the top of her head lovingly. "Don't worry, Unnie, I know what I signed up for. Together, remember?"

She only looked up with admiration written all over her face, and you knew she was thanking you for the effort you were putting. Although you did become deaf temporarily a few times and your arms felt like they were going to fall off, it was worth seeing the joy and delight on your guardian's and the member's faces. She breezed through the rollercoasters after that, much to the members' both amusement and horror because now they would have to endure two amusement park enthusiasts.

Oh well, everything is much better when done together anyways.

At first I wrote this for me but I'm definitely ecstatic because other people find it fun too. I hope this story, even though I can't upload as often as I used to, can still provide you with the same feeling after a long day. I really appreciate all of you beyond words can explain ♥️

I'm glad you guys enjoyed the last chapter! To reply to a comment, I guess we're seeing a lot of her vulnerable side now, huh? That's because Eli's starting to accept them, not pushing her troubles away and asking her members for help when she knows she can :)
