Chapter 36
Armed and DangerousWhen he woke up the next morning, Himchan felt like he was fighting the biggest hangover in the world.
Which was funny considering he only had a few sips of it the night before, not nearly enough to make him feel like this.
He stared up at the ceiling, wincing at the pain and slipped it hand under his shirt to feel the jagged, makeshift stitches that he gave himself the night before when Sang Hee thought he was showering.
He groaned when pain shot up his side and clenched his eyes shut.
His head was pounding and his vision was swimming as he rolled out of bed, tangled in sweat and his bed sheets.
Just as he stood up to regain balance, he stumbled back before collapsing on the ground with a loud thump as his head hit the floor.
His vision was blurry and just as his eyes gave in, he saw the door swing open and someone race up to him, calling his name. He felt their cold hand pressed up against his sweaty cheek and shivers ran up and down his spine.
And then he passed out.
-----
"Sang Hee, he'll be fine." Chin Hwae said while patting the top of her head.
Dong Chul was pacing back and forth frantically, his brows creased together in worry, "We don't know that. Himchan doesn't just pass out for no reason at all. What if he has a concussion? What if he was poisoned? What if he's in a coma? What if--"
"Not helping." Sang Hee muttered while biting on her nail.
She was in the middle of packing her things up to move out when she heard a loud crash in the room next door. She had called out Himchan's name a few times but when he didn't respond, she crept over to his room only to see him in an unconscious pile on his floor.
She almost passed out right there.
But instead she started running around like a chicken with its head cut off, panicking, calling the boys before calling the ambulance.
She dragged his body onto the couch and was shaking in her spot until the ambulance and Chin Hwae and Dong Chul made it to the apartment.
Which was how the three of them ended up sitting in Himchan's hospital room waiting for the doctor to come in and for him to wake up.
"Sorry." Dong Chul mumbled as he stopped pacing to sit down in the chair.
Sang Hee sighed and rubbed her face, "No, I'm sorry. I just…you're right, we don't know why someone as healthy as him would just pass out."
"Whatever the reason is, it can't be that bad. It's Himchan, he wouldn't scare us like that. He's tough."
"I know." Sang Hee said with a fake smile before her eyes landed on Himchan, on the bed. His hair was matted with sweat and there was an IV attached to his arm. The bags under his eyes were grey and his whole face looked worn out.
She had got in last night after him and neither of them spoke to each other at all. Even though he was the one who was kicking her out, she was the one that felt guilty.
His chest was struggling with each breath and everything about him looked drained.
"Sang Hee…you're crying."
"No, I'm no--" Sang Hee touched her cheek and froze when she felt the wetness on her skin. "Oh."
Dong Chul shot up in his chair, looking at her in concern.
"." Sang Hee mumbled while using her sleeve to wipe her face.
The boys crowded around, fussing over her, Chin Hwae's hand robotically patting her head, "Shh, shhh, it's okay."
Sang Hee rolled her eyes and nudged him off, "I'm fine, stop being so dramatic guys."
"You're not fine. You're scared and upset. We all are." Chin Hwae cooed in his monotone voice.
"It must've been hard to see him passed out." Dong Chul said softly while putting his hand on her shoulder.
"He looked like he was dead." Sang Hee whispered, "He looked so lifeless. It was so scary."
Chin Hwae let out a breath and continued to pat her head, "It'll be okay."
"Also," Sang Hee said while clearing , "If you guys happen to know any apartments that are up for rent, let me know."
Dong Chul and Chin Hwae shared a look, "What do you mean?"
"Himchan kicking me out so I need to find a new place." She said with a sigh.
The boys looked concerned, "I thought you guys were getting along well."
"We were but--"
Someone cleared their throat, getting their attention, "Hi, are you the people who brought Kim Himchan in?"
The turned and saw a young doctor looking at them while holding a clipboard. Sang Hee nodded while walking up to him, the boys close behind.
"Well, the good news is that your friend is fine, no long term damage or effects, he just needs a lot of rest." He said while closing the door and walking up to Himchan's bed.
Sang Hee trailed behind him, twisting the fabric of her shirt around her finger, "But why did he pass out in the first place? Was he hurt?"
The doctor adjusted the IV and jotted notes down on his clipboard before turning to her. His eyes flickered down to the way she wrung the hem of her shirt before he looked back up at her.
"Extreme exhaustion and fatigue. It looks like he hasn't eaten in a few days and had very little sleep especially for someone his age. On top of that, stress could've also caused him to collapse. If he was dealing and going through a lot, it might've worn him out on top of not eating and sleeping. In fact, stress may have very well be the reason he wasn't eating or sleeping." He said simply.
Sang Hee's moment of relief was cut short when the doctor continued speaking.
"Oh…and the stab wound…obviously."
"Wait. what?" Sang Hee nearly shrieked. "What stab wound?"
The other boys faces tensed as they hovered over Himchan, scanning him in worry.
The doctor blinked at them in confusion and pointed to his own body, "The one on his side? It's a few inches wide and deep. You didn't know?"
"No. When on earth would he have gotten stabbed?" Dong Chul said, stunned.
The doctor walked up to Himchan and carefully lifted the man's shirt to expose the wound, "He did a very bad self-stitch job and it must have gotten infected which was why he passed out with his already fragile immune system, weakening him. I'm having someone come in and re-stitch his wounds."
Sang Hee's eyes were locked, unblinking, at the harsh medical wire that was holding Himchan's swollen skin together. The stitches were messy and jagged, without touching it she could already feel how rough they were.
She couldn't even think about the pain he would've felt of having to sew his skin together. The infection added a green hue to his skin and the mere sight made her knees buckle.
The doctor was quick, grabbing her by the elbows to hold her up before leading her to a chair, "Are you alright?"
Chin Hwae and Dong Chul looked at her but her gaze was glassy, "I-I'm fine. I just…" Her voice trailing off.
The doctor sighed and pulled out a small pen flashlight and cupped her cheeks with one hand to face him before shining the light into her eyes.
He let go of her cheeks and held out one finger, "Follow my finger with your eyes."
She did as he said and followed his finger move from left to right before he turned off the flashlight, "You're just in shock."
"I-I know it's just…" Her fingers started to shake, "I think he got stabbed because of me."
The doctor blinked at her and glanced at her friends just as a crackled cough came from Himchan's bed.
"He's waking up!"
The doctor moved swiftly to Himchan's bedside and scribbled some things down on his clipboard before watching Himchan eyes slowly peel open. He winced at the harsh light and groaned when he saw the doctor.
"Alright everyone, I'm going to need you to wait outside while I give Mr. Kim a check up. You'll be able to talk to your friend in a bit."
------
Chin Hwae and Dong Chul had left Sang Hee by the hallway in front of Himchan's room, to go grab coffee
"Sang Hee?" A soft voice called out.
She snapped her head to the source before her eyes grew wide, "Namjoon?"
"Hey." He said with a grin, while holding a file in his hand. "I was looking for you."
Sang Hee took a step back and watched him cautiously, "How did you know I was here?"
"Calm down." He said with a sigh, "I didn't stalk you or anything. I went to find you at the precinct and Woon told me that you guys were at the hospital. How is he?"
Sang Hee softened and stared at the door in front of her, "Okay. Nothing too severe."
"Thank god but it's not really like him to injured to the extent of being hospitalized. I was surprised when Woon told me."
She shrugged, "People aren't invincible."
A silence settled over them until Sang Hee turned to him with a raised brow, "Why were you looking for me?"
"I wanted to let you know that I'm moving to Japan."
Her lips parted in awe before she slowly nodded, "Wow, that's sudden. Why? Did you get promoted?"
"Nah," He said with a slight laugh, "I think it was more of a disciplinary measure but my Chief tried not to make it sound that way."
"What did you do?" She gaped.
He scratched the back of his neck, "I was caught snooping around my Chief's office."
"." She breathed out in shock.
"Yeah but I should be grateful because I'm pretty sure I would've gotten fired if they knew I stole a file." He said with a grin while holding up the file he brought with him.
"Namjoo--"
He held the file out to her until she took it from him, reluctantly, "That's why I'm here. I got the OC Chief's file on Woon. Your old Chief met up with mine, probably because you guys worked with us and gave this to him. It's a small file though, probably just a summary of things, nothing really important I'd guess."
"Why would you do this?" She asked incredulously.
"You were right. The cops that turn a blind eye are part of the problem and if Woon really is shady I can't pretend I'm okay with that. That's not why I became a cop." He said while shoving his hands into his pockets.
Sang Hee pulled her eyes off of him and flipped the file open, quickly skimming the documents, "Thank you so much. You really didn't have to do this."
"Trust me, I did this for my conscience just as much as I did it for you." He said with another laugh.
Sang Hee closed the file and stared at it in her hands before he cleared his throat, "Does Himchan know about your parents?"
"Yeah." She mumbled before looking up at him, "I told him a little while ago."
He shook his head with a small smile, "I figured."
"What do you mean?" She asked with a frown.
He shrugged, "I played blind for a long time, I think it was just delusion or wishful thinking but it's obvious that there's something with you two. Chemistry, maybe. It just looked like you guys had a connection that no one else could match up to. Even when you guys were new partners."
"He's a good detective…and friend." She said quietly.
Namjoon nodded, "I know. He's hard around the edges but he's a good guy, he's always been there for me when I needed a helping hand but the only time that Himchan ever acted strange towards me was when he saw me ge
