Chapter 23
Armed and Dangerous"There she is!"
Sang Hee jumped in her seat and looked up, bewildered, when Dong Chul and Chin Hwae appeared in front of her desk the next day.
She had barely seen the two men since they had been out on calls all day.
"Oh look, it's dumb and dumber." She said with a smile before turning back to her computer.
Dong Chul gasped and then pouted, "Hey!"
"Kidding." She said with a wink and a teasing smile that left the man with a blush on his face.
Chin Hwae leaned over the desk to get a better look at her, "How are you feeling?"
"Better." She said distractedly.
When she noticed him still staring at her, she rolled her eyes playfully and smiled, "Seriously guys. I'm fine. I'm been having a little trouble sleeping, but I'm fine."
"Good." Chin Hwae said with a nod.
Dong Chul beamed while bouncing on his heels. He turned to Chin Hwae in excitement, "Can we do it now?"
"Do what?" Sang Hee asked with furrowed brows.
Chin Hwae raised his brows with a look of what she imagined was determination, "Get her."
"Wh--"
In a second the two boys grabbed Sang Hee and threw her on the floor before throwing themselves on top of her, effectively dog piling on the helpless, newbie detective.
"STOOPPP!" She squealed when she felt the weight of both men squishing her while other officers in the precinct laughed at them.
Both of them cheered happily while she groaned in pain, "Yayyy! Sang Hee's back."
"Guys, seriously, you're killing me here. I can't breathe!" She screeched out.
Dong Chul scoffed, "Are you calling us fat? How dare you!"
She felt a soft tug on her hair and craned her neck back to glare at Chin Hwae, "Hope you're feeling better, kid."
"Kid my , we're the same age." She said while trying to blow her hair out of her eyes.
Dong Chul wooted, "Yup! She's back!"
"Well, isn't this is a sight." Himchan said as he walked up to them.
Sang Hee tried to look at him but the boy currently laying on top of her was making that hard to do.
"Hey man." Dong Chul called out.
Himchan took a sip of his coffee, scanning Dong Chul round face and Chin Hwae's long limbs before creasing his brows at the slim legs that were poking out under both of them.
"Sang Hee's at the bottom?" He asked while taking another sip.
Chin Hwae nodded in agreement, "Yep."
Himchan set his mug on the table, "Perfect."
Sang Hee knit her brows together in confusion, "What do you mean perf--OH MY GOD!"
A scream left her lips when he jumped on top of Dong Chul, making it three full grown men squishing her.
"Hey, the at the top, remember when I took a knife in the side for you?" She groaned angrily.
"Aww, don't be a party pooper, tiger." She could hear the smirk in his voice.
Dong Chul giggled, "We just want to see our precious newbie crack a smile."
Sang Hee smiled through the pain even though they couldn't see, "I'm smiling now, so can you guys let me breathe?"
"I know I wanted you guys to get along, but at least try to act like adults."
They all turned, except for Sang Hee who was barely breathing, and saw Woon standing by his office with his arms crossed and his brows raised in amusement.
"I hired a bunch of kids. I have kids as my leading team. What am I doing wrong?"
Dong Chul grinned, "Aren't we adorable?"
"Get back to work gang before I demote you." He said with a shake of his head before walking off.
Finally, after what felt like years, they started to roll off of her. Once they were all off, Sang Hee rolled onto her back and let out a loud groan as she tried to catch her breath.
"You guys are the worst." She grumbled.
Himchan crouched down next to her and stuck his hand out, "Oh come on, tiger, we just like your smile."
"Cute." She said sarcastically.
A smile curled up his lips as she slapped her hand on his and let him pull her up to her feet. He yanked her up at such speed that she ended up chest to chest with him.
"Glad to see you're better." He said deeply as he let go of her hand.
She made a face, "I'm hardly better, sleeping is a pain in the ."
A flash of emotion flickered through his eyes before he smirked and leaned closer to her, "Is this your attempt of asking me to help you fall asleep? Do you want to share a bed because I can make that happen, tiger."
"Rude." She muttered while punching his shoulder and pushing him away.
Himchan bit down on his bottom lip, smiling, while walking backwards to his table. His eyes flickered over her shoulder before his lips shrivelled up into a wry grimace.
" me." He muttered before taking his seat.
Attorney Hong strolled into the precinct with a smug grin and his hands shoved into the pockets of his expensive blazer.
What he wouldn't do to choke him with that designer tie of his.
"What are you doing here?" Himchan snarled, "I thought Thursdays were trash days."
Hong smirked, "You're always so tasteful, I'm just here because I wanted to see how the 565 was holding up after yesterday's events."
Himchan's eyes darted to Sang Hee whose eyes were pinned on her computer but her shoulders were stiffened.
"It's a shame, really." Hong continued, "I was hoping to stop by today for files on Mr. Park but it looks like he won't need to be represented in court since one of you officers failed to keep him and his wife alive."
Everyone fell silent as they stared at Sang Hee who didn't move.
"Woon must be losing his mind, sending a newbie into a high stakes negotiation. What a failure." He snorted.
Himchan watched as Sang Hee bit down on her lip as she shrunk in her chair. "It's ironic that you're the one talking about failures. Word on the street is that the judge chose to convict Assistant Lim. You don't have a spotless record either. First Ryu, then Namjoon's drug bust, and now Lim…do you ever win?"
Sang Hee's eyes widened as she shot him a shocked look.
First his pep talk and now he was standing up for her.
"I never miss my interactions with you Detective Kim. But I must say, the first time I came in here, Detective Bae was playing your knight in shining armour and the second time I'm in here you're playing hers…you two are quite a pair." He said with a smirk.
Dong Chul stood up from his desk, "If you have no real business at the precinct, then I'll have to ask you to leave."
"Oh, excuse me, I'm just surprised that your lead detective is actually standing up for someone who's going to be temporary. If Kim Himchan says it, then it must be law, right?" He said with a dry laugh.
Just as Dong Chul was about to walk up to him, Hong held out his hand, "I'll see myself out. The hospitality never fails to warm me."
He walked by Sang Hee's desk before his footsteps slowed down, "Lovely flowers Detective Bae."
Himchan's muscles tensed as he watched Hong touch the petals with his finger, "It's a shame that they're dying. You should take better care of beautiful things or they can turn ugly…really fast."
She watched, speechless as he walked away. Once the doors slammed shut, Sang Hee shot out of her chair and made a beeline to the breakroom.
She almost tripped over her laces until she could rest her hands on the countertop. She hung her head down and took deep breaths as she tried to calm herself.
"Hey."
She turned to see Himchan leaning against the doorframe with his arms crossed as his eyes drilled into her.
"Hi." She said quickly before turning and filling her mug with coffee.
He watched her set the coffee pot down and turned to him before holding the cup up to her lips. She narrowed her eyes when he stayed motionless.
"What?" She mumbled.
Himchan quirked his brow, "You okay? You got out of there pretty fast."
She slammed her mug down and walked up to him, "I just don't get it. He's a piece of . Worst of the worst and for some reason the things he says still gets to me."
"It's his super power. Trust me, you get used to it. He's all bark, no bite." He quipped while his eyes unconsciously fell to her lips.
Sang Hee took a step closer to him so that his crossed arms grazed hers. "I messed up this case, didn't I?"
"Don't be stupid." He snorted while knocking his fist to the side of her head. "You know better than that."
Sang Hee let out a breath but looked unsure, "I know. I know."
"Now, what's the matter?" He asked with a sigh.
She shrugged, "How can someone do that? How can someone kill another person without even flinching? Especially someone they once loved and wanted to spend the rest of their life with? How can someone's heart and soul be that black and corrupted?"
Himchan stiffened and his jaw locked as her words echoed in his mind. It was like she was asking him about himself.
How could he be the person that he was?
"Sometimes," he said slowly, "Sometimes when you feel like you don't have a soul, you try to fill yourself up with something that makes you feel like you do. Some people just choose the wrong thing."
She tilted her head aside challengingly, "Everyone has a soul."
"Maybe you're right. But not everyone knows how to hold on to it. Sometimes reality just steals your soul away." He whispered hotly while bending his neck down to meet her gaze.
Her eyes flickered across his face, scanning his features, before her lips turned down, "Your soul doesn't get stolen, it gets sold."
"Not everyone is violent because they want to be. Sometimes life turns into someone you don't want to be without you even realizing it." He countered with fire sparking in his eyes.
She looked unamused as she angling her head up to get closer to him, "That doesn't make it any less wrong."
"And you've never done anything wrong in your life, tiger?" His voice trembled down her spine as his nose barely grazed hers.
"Am I interrupting?"
Chae Mi stood by the door with her brows raised. Sang Hee and Himchan looked b
