A vulnerable heart

The Peculiar Girl

Ji Eun went to her favorite spot on top of the magical hill. It is where she goes every time she feels alone or if she just wants to think and hear the ripples of her own sanity.

When she was just a few steps away, she realized that the small nature fairies are having fun.

“Hey there fairies!” She greeted and ran towards them.

The fairies turned around and realized that that voice belongs to Ji Eun. They completely shivered and quickly turned to flowers. The fairies do that whenever they’re afraid and being a flower is their only disguise.

When Ji Eun realized that they turned to flowers, she frowned. “I’m not going to harm you.”

She waited for them to turn again to fairies with colorful wings but there was nothing.

She sighed and went to her favorite spot, the Sycamore tree with an overlooking scenery of the village.

She rested her back at the tree trunk and placed her arms on her knee.

The events at the market a while ago repeated over and over to her mind as she looks at the small village at the bottom of the hill.  She closed her eyes, hearing the breaking of her heart as she remembers the cold stares of the villagers and the taunting of their mouths.

She buried her face on her arms and forced herself to be strong.

“Ugh…here we go again…” She muttered.

Ji Eun sighed and out of the blue,  thought about the fact that she’s getting tired, tired of all these evil things, tired of ruining the happy endings. And maybe the point is, she’s cursing herself for being such a bad woman. There’s always a time when she’s like this. Well yeah she’s evil and irritating but there are days when she doesn’t want to be a villain. She wants to be a normal person like the other villagers. There’s a time when she likes to ruin the days of people but there’s also a time when she want to stop. Okay, she’s crazy I guess.

“Why am I like this…” She told to herself.

“It’s just that…ugh…why do they hate me?!”

“Ugh…I might become a paranoid here.”

After talking to herself, she decided to stop and just keep her feelings inside, no one will understand her anyway.

She stood up and decided to go to Ms. Chummy the witch.

She went through the dark woods and at last, she reached Ms. Chummy’s hideout.

The despicable witch opened the door and gave Ji Eun a smile, “Well hello”

Ji Eun took a seat on the wooden chair with cobwebs. The witch scanned Ji Eun and found herself astonishing at the fact that the girl is actually wearing clothes with light colors.

“See that apple on the table?”

Ji Eun looked to her left side and saw an apple. She nodded.

“I want you to give it…to Yoona the Snow White.” Ms. Chummy instructed as she handles Ji Eun the apple.

Ji Eun quickly shook her head, “I don’t want to.”

Ms. Chummy frowned, “What?!”

“I don’t know. I just don’t get myself..or maybe I’m not in the mood to ruin other’s day.”

“What’s the matter with you today?” Ms. Chummy irritatingly asked.

“Nothing…don’t you get tired of doing stupid acts?” Ji Eun muttered.

The witch crossed her arms and sighed, completely flabbergasted of Ji Eun’s change of character. There was silence when suddenly a sly smile crept on Ms. Chummy’s face.

Ji Eun was busily staring at the floor full of dusts when she heard someone wailing. She looked up and realized that it was Ms. Chummy. “Please I’m begging you…do it for me..”

Ji Eun rolled her eyes, “Oh please, you think you can convince me with that wailing of yours?”

Ms. Chummy didn’t reply and continued to wail, saying please. Ji Eun suddenly felt that Ms. Chummy isn’t joking so she walked towards her, “Why are you crying?”

“I’m totally wrecked Ji Eun…and my only happiness is to know that Yoona eats the apple.”

Ji Eun felt dust entered her nose and she eventually sneezes, “Are you out of your mind?! Did you forget the Kingdom’s rules for the villains? In the 3rd rule, it says that we villains should never ever poison another being. We villains can ruin every person’s day but we should never kill them in purpose.”

Ms. Chummy gave her a wry look and huffed, “Who said anything about poison?”

Ji Eun wrinkled her brow, “What do you mean?”

“You’re such a silly girl. That’s not a poisonous apple.” Ms. Chummy guffawed.

“It’s actually a gift…you see, I just want to settle things between me and Yoona.” She added.

“Oh really…” Ji Eun muttered, thinking if Ms. Chummy is actually telling the truth.

“Yes…you see…I’m getting tired too...so I want to end it now...” Ms. Chummy mumbled, wiping the tears that escape from her eyes using her cloak.

Ji Eun sighs, “Okay…I’ll give it to her.”

“Really?!”

“Well yes…it’s a gift right?” Ji Eun said.

Ms. Chummy nodded, “Yes yes yes…it’s a gift.”

Ji Eun grabbed the apple and stood up, “I should give it to her now so that I can go home early.”

Ms. Chummy smiled, “Okay then, that’s more like it.”

She opened the door for Ji Eun and bade good bye to her. Ms. Chummy looked at Ji Eun from the window and when Ji Eun is finally away…A grin formed on her face.

“What a fool…That’s what I like about you Ji Eun…you’re so easy to deceive.”

At last, I finally reached the dwarves’ house. My hand formed into a fist and knocked at their door.

Yoona was the one who opened it and I can see that she’s surprised to see me.

“Oh hi Ji Eun…w—what’re you doing here?”

I handed her the apple, “Ms. Chummy give this to you. She said that it’s a sorry gift.”

“A sorry gift?” Yoona asks as she took the apple.

“What did I just say?” I said, more like a statement than a question.

A wide smile formed on her face and she bats her eyelashes, “Well thank you Ji Eun…I’ll surely enjoy this.”

“Okay then, farewell.” I stated while waving my hands. She smiled back and closed the door.

When I turned around, I saw two dwarves… “Hey you, what’re you doing in our territory?!”

The one with a grumpy face exclaimed. I rolled my eyes, “Relax, I just gave a gift to Yoona.”

When Ji Eun finally reached her house, she cooked some carrot soup so that Juniel will have something to eat when she gets back. After an hour of preparing for dinner, she felt exhausted. She took a seat from the wooden chair and buried her face on her arms that are resting on the table and after a few minutes she drifted off to sleep.

There were voices...they’re shouting…banging on the door…

I quickly woke up and realized that it’s still night…and there was a commotion outside.

I yawned as I stretch my arms. Wait, what’s with all the noises outside?

~:~

Ji Eun drags her feet towards the door. When she opened it, she was greeted by tomatoes, landing on her. She gasped and realized that the dwarves are throwing tomatoes at her. Some villagers woke up because of the noise and went outside, seeing the commotion that’s happening in front of Ji Eun’s house. Ji Eun suddenly screamed, “WHAT’S GOING ON?!!!!!!!!!!!!”

The dwarves yelled at her, “You poisoned Yoona!!!!”

Some of the villagers were astonished, “What?”

All of them are taunting at Ji Eun who has no idea what’s happening.

“We should bring her to the magistrate!”

Ji Eun widened her eyes, “Wha---------“

Just before she could react, the villagers grabbed her arms and dragged her to the court.

Ji Eun tried her best to yank them away but it was no use, they are so many and she’s just one.

A carriage stopped at the front of their house and Juniel stepped out.

“Thank you.” She told to the carriage driver.

The carriage driver smiled at her and waved his hands, “I’m so glad that you’ll be the prince’s wife.”

Juniel curled up her lips, forming a smile and went inside the house, excited to tell her sister that the King and Queen like her to be their son’s wife.

To her surprise, no one was there, there was a carrot soup on the table but there’s no sign of her sister.

“Ji Eun?” She said but there’s no answer.

She went outside and knocked at the door of their neighbor’s house.

An old woman opened it with wide spectacles, “Hello Juniel”

“Good evening Mrs. Shin…where’s Ji Eun?” She asked.

The old woman gasped, “Oh no…the villagers dragged her to the court to see the magistrate.”

Juniel widened her eyes, “What?! Wh---what happened?”

“I really don’t know…You should go there.” The old woman replied.

Without hesitation, she ran to see her sister.

When she finally reached the court, there were no sign of people so she asked the guards, “Where’s Ji Eun?”

The guards led her to a room and told her that she could visit Ji Eun. Tomorrow morning is the meeting with the magistrate and Ji Eun was commanded to stay in the room the whole night before the meeting.

She quickly opened the door and saw her sister sitting on a wooden chair while her arms are rested on the table where she buries her face.

“Ji Eun?” Juniel muttered.

Just by hearing Juniel’s voice, Ji eun quickly looked up and saw her sister with watery eyes. She stood up and gave Juniel a tight hug. When they finally let go, Juniel looked at her sister, wearing her clothes with smudges of thrown tomatoes.

“W---what h—happened to you?”

Ji Eun sat on the ground and felt her salt tears escaping her eyes, “I t—tried Juniel…”

Juniel also sat on the ground and reached for her sister’s hands, “What?”

“I’m tired of being this way…I just want to be a typical woman who doesn’t give hatred to the people…but why? Why am I destined to be like this?” Ji Eun cries, feeling the pain clouding her.

Juniel was sure that she can hear her heart shattering as her sister speaks these words while there are visible pained salt tears rolling on her sister’s cheeks.

Juniel touched Ji Eun’s face and wiped away her tears, that’s all that she can do to make things better.

“Shhhh…I’m here…” Juniel whispered.

“The witch deceived me…she said that the apple is just a gift and told me that I should give it to Yoona…So I did what she said…unaware that it’s a poisonous apple…I poisoned her Juniel…I poisoned her…I didn’t ruin her day, I poisoned her…”

Juniel widened her eyes, astonished. She knows that poisoning another being is strictly prohibited in their kingdom. She shivered, thinking of the punishment that will be given to her sister.

Juniel wrapped her arms around Ji Eun, “Don’t cry…it’s not your fault…”

They stayed like that for hours as Juniel hears her heart being stabbed by a knife while hearing her sister empties out her sorrowful soul through tears of pain and regret.
