Chapter 88

False Awakening

Taemin was never good at packing his things.

“Kitten, half of your luggage is filled with underwear.” Minho commented, staring at the overflowing suitcases. “Our honeymoon is only one week. You’re bringing enough underwear for a year!”

“I’m so bad at packing, Minho! I’m so bad at this!” He whined, falling back onto the bed.

“We have to be ready for tomorrow, Kitten. I told you to pack ahead of time, didn’t I? I was packing last week, you should have joined me.”

The pout and messy hair made Taemin irresistible and Minho couldn’t argue for another second.

“I’ll pack your things for you, okay?” He sighed.

                “Honey…”

                “Yes, Kitten?”

                “Come kiss me.”

Nodding, Minho obediently climbed onto the bed, hovering over the younger boy and giving him kisses.

When their sweet exchange finished, he got up and walked over to Taemin’s wardrobe, preparing himself for some packing. He didn’t mind though.

                “Minho, I love you.”

“What’s this suddenly about?” The elder chuckled, picking out shirts.

“I just want you to know that you mean the world to me.”

“Well I hope you wouldn’t marry someone if that wasn’t the case.”

“You’re the only person I’ve ever been with so I haven’t had the chance.”

Hearing the bed creak, Minho wasn’t surprised to find the younger boy’s arms around his waist seconds later.

“Hey, what do you want me to make for dinner today?” Taemin asked, the elder receiving gentle pecks on the back of his neck.

                “Can I request anything?”

                “Anything.”

“I want you to make spaghetti.”

                “And?”

“I don’t really mind. I’m in the mood for spaghetti only so ask Jongin what he wants and make that.” Minho explained, “Ah, but I have one more request actually.”

                “What is it?”

“I want to watch you make the spaghetti while wearing nothing but an apron.”

Taemin laughed, nipping at Minho’s shoulder.

“Okay, honey. I’m going to go ask Jongin what he wants and then I’ll take him along with me to the super market while you pack. Once I pick everything up, I’ll let you know and you can watch to your heart’s desire.”

“Thank you, kitten.” Minho smiled, happily taking one more kiss on the lips before Taemin walked out.

                Being married was great.

It didn’t really change anything that dramatically, but it still set a different kind of air around them, both as people and as a couple.

Taemin was now officially his for the rest of their lives.

                He was also Taemin’s.

                It was nice.

“Are you ready?” Taemin asked, waiting for Jongin to lock the door.

                “Yeah, I’m ready.”

Smiling, he took the younger boy’s hand, leading him towards the elevators.

                “What’s for dinner?”

“Minho wants spaghetti, you can have whatever you want.” He explained.

“Ah… I haven’t had spaghetti in a long time so I’d like that too.  You’ll have an easier time making one dinner than two.”

Fingers interlacing, they stepped out the building. It was sunny and warm. Their short sleeved shirts and knee length pants were more than enough to keep them warm.

“Let’s get ice cream.” Taemin said.

                “Okay.”

Looking up at the younger boy, he noticed the sun reflecting off of his profile. Jongin looked really handsome today. Jongin usually looked really handsome. Who would have thought the skinny, awkward kid from ten years ago would be so charming now.

“Hyung, you keep staring. I’m starting to feel self-conscious.” Jongin mumbled. His cheeks really were becoming more of a peachy pink.

“I was just thinking about how good looking you are.”

Snorting, Jongin threw his arm around Taemin’s shoulders and with his hand lifting Taemin’s face by his chin, he snuck a kiss on the cheek. “Then does your heart race when good looking guys kiss you?”

Recognizing the teasing tone, Taemin stuck his tongue out, hand slipping into Jongin’s back pocket as they made their way down the street. They stopped at the lights.

“Oh, of course. My heart feels like it’ll explode, especially when you’re the one kissing me.”

Expecting a cocky remark, he was surprised to get a quiet, sunken reply instead. “Hyung, I’m going to miss you so much…”

How cute. How unbelievably adorable. He really was sulking.

“Jongin, I’ll only be gone a week. We’ll come back in seven days.”

                “Will you miss me…?”

Of course he would. How couldn’t he miss his best friend?

“I’ll think about you every day, Jongin. You know, the time difference between Switzerland and here is only eight hours. I can call you as soon as I wake up which will probably be around the afternoon for you, but since there’s no school, you should be free, right?”

                “Yeah…”

“I’ll also call you before I go to sleep, so that’ll be right when you wake up, unless you sleep in. We can video call too. I’ll text you all the time and keep you updated, I’ll send you lots of photos! It’s like you’ll be there with me. You’ll barely notice I ever left. You’ll probably get sick of seeing so many notifications on your phone with my name on them.” Taemin explained, thinking of how he could keep in touch as much as possible. It wasn’t like Jongin was the only one feeling the impact of the short term separation. Maybe if it was before, he wouldn’t mind, but they have been living together for a couple of years now, so of course not having Jongin there will be strange and foreign to him.

“I’m… I’m greedy though, Taemin… You know that, don’t you?”

“I-I… well yeah, I know the phone isn’t ideal, but I’m not in any position to bring you along Jongin… I don’t have the money to buy your ticket and all our reservations have already been made. They’re all under Minho’s name and credit card too…”

“I’m going to miss hugging you, and kissing you, and eating dinner with you… seven days seems like forever when you’re alone, Hyung.”

He definitely had experience with being alone. Sometimes a single minute could feel like an eternity.

“Why don’t you stay at a friend’s house then, Jongin? They’ll keep you company and when we return from our trip, you won’t even want to come home anymore.” He laughed, trying to lighten the mood.

“Taemin, please don’t underestimate how much I love you. I just- ugh, I know I can’t stop you from going and you deserve to go on a honeymoon alone with your husband but… I’m just jealous, lonely, and too lazy to make myself dinner as perfectly as you do!”

They were now at the supermarket and Jongin grabbed a basket, sliding his hand down from the blonde’s shoulder. He took Taemin’s wrist, plucking his fingers out of his back pocket but only to lock his between them.

                “Hey Jongin…”

                “Yeah?”

“I’m going to sleep with you tonight. Let’s watch a movie, eat popcorn… ah, but I can’t stay up too late since I have to wake up at four to go to the airport.”

                “Okay, that sounds fine.”

“Fine?” Taemin asked, eyebrow raised, “Fine? You should be happy that I even let you come near me.”

There were a few seconds of silence, but he was happy that the playful jab was well received when Jongin suddenly laughed.

“Yeah, you’re right. Thanks for letting me near you.”

Zigzagging through the aisle, their basket slowly filled up with pasta and sauces, herbs and drinks to accommodate the meal.

Jongin wished he could help more, but he had no right being in the kitchen to start with. If he could make himself a decent hotdog that wasn’t frozen nor burnt his tongue off, that was a miracle and it deserved to be celebrated.

Taemin, on the other, was a genius when it came to making meals. It was probably a surprise to everyone who didn’t know him. After all, he didn’t seem like someone who could probably be a chef at most restaurants. It amazed him even more since he didn’t really cook much aside from quick meals before meeting Minho. It took him so little time to become the perfect housewife. If only Minho knew how lucky he was. Jongin would appreciate Taemin a lot more.

Still, he wasn’t given the opportunity to openly appreciate Taemin in his wholeness, so he couldn’t really whine and complain.

As the elder looked over shelf after shelf of extra groceries that Jongin might need while they were off in Switzerland, the younger boy found himself lacing his arms around Taemin’s tiny body, leaving kisses along the back of the boy’s neck.

“Hey, maybe I can make some food for you. You know, like, something that can stay fresh throughout the week and is easy to prepare… something you can just stick in the microwave and heat up… I wonder what I could make.”

“I’m fine with anything.” Jongin commented. Not only did he not care, he wasn’t really paying attention to food right now, especially with Taemin in his grasp. Kisses were his number one priority. Kissing Taemin made him happy, even if it was just on his cheek or shoulder. Anything would do.

“Maybe I’ll make a salad… what kind would you like?”

“Excuse me?” A third voice suddenly interrupted.

Looking over, the pair spotted a group made up of two girls and a guy. They were probably a few years older than them.

                “Y-yes?” The blonde asked.

                “Are you Lee Taemin?”

Surprised, he was taken aback, hearing Jongin whisper a ‘do you know these people?’ into his ear. He shook his head.

                “Yes, that’s me.”

The girls squealed quietly while the boy blushed. “Wow, we’re so lucky. What are the chances?”

                Now they were really confused.

“I’m sorry, do I know you from somewhere?” He apologetically asked. Jongin seemed to have his defences up a little, resting his chin on Taemin’s shoulder.

“N-no! We’re the ones who should be apologizing! You’re probably really confused! We’re fans of yours!” The boy explained.

“Fans?” Both of them repeated, eyes meeting as they glanced in each other’s direction for reassurance that what they heard was correct.

“Yes! We’re photography students! Our school is actually a few hours away in Busan so we don’t come here too often but we’re staying with a friend to take photos of Seoul’s nature trails-” One of the girls began explaining when the other girl cut her off.

“That’s not important though! Ever since we saw the ad campaign for the briefs you did, we’ve been dying to take photos of you and asked our professor if we could get you to come in for our class but we weren’t able to find any of your contact information or website online!”

Intimidated by their enthusiasm, Taemin shrunk back against Jongin, thankful for the fact that he didn’t come here alone today. He’d have no idea how to react and nowhere to hide.

“I-I’m not a professional model, it was just a one-time thing really… someone close to me is also a photography student and he asked me to do a shoot for him for some project, but through connections, the main photographer for that company’s shoots saw his portfolio and wanted us to model the product officially instead of just wear it for the project. I really don’t have any information… they contacted us through one of his professors…”

“First time?! That’s amazing!” They group gasped. “What about your sister then?” The boy asked.

                “Sister?”

“Yes, she’s very beautiful.” They all agreed, “She compliments the other model well.”

“Taemin doesn’t have a sister.” Jongin explained.

“Ah, then who was she? Was she a professional? I haven’t seen her before. We thought she was your sister because you two look alike.”

Taemin’s face turned red, captivating them.

Jongin decided to answer them again.

“That was Taemin too. They dressed him up in a wig and everything and then they just photoshopped the bust in.”

At first they were all amazing, jaws hanging on their hinges, however, after some time, the girls began giggle, nudging the boy.

“He has a huge crush on the girl. He keeps saying ‘she has so much potential’ and that ‘she’s beautiful’.” They explained, leaving the boy too embarrassed for words, hiding his face in his hands.

“Is that really true though? That was you?” The girls asked.

“Y-yes. We did the same kind of shoot with me as a guy and me as a girl but he thought it might be better to submit something heteroual themed because it’s less controversial and less likely to be submitted to biasedly deducted marks.”

“You’re so well spoken…” The boy blushed, causing Taemin to reciprocate the reaction.

                “How old are you Taemin?”

                “I just turned nineteen.”

“Nineteen?! You’re so young! We’re four years older than you, and he’s two years older than you!” She stated, “That means you did the shoot when you were eighteen! Wow, amazing! Would we be able to get your phone number or email or something? We’d like to contact you about modelling for us if that’s okay with you.”

                “S-sure…”

“Here, just give them to me and I’ll forward it to them.”

He nodded, receiving a cellphone with a blank contact card on the screen. “I’m not a professional model though… I think you’d be saving your time if you got someone with proper training and experience.” Taemin warned, filling out with information

“We’d love to work with you though. Also, please make a website. We’d love to see your work with others.”

“That’s a long shot,” He smiled, “But we’ll see.”

“Since you just turned nineteen… then you’re on summer break, right? You start post-secondary education next month or so?”

                “Yes.”

“We have a summer course so… would you be free anytime next week?”

Feeling butterflies in his stomach, Taemin raised his hand into view, flashing one of his fingers. “Actually, I got married last week. I’m leaving for my honeymoon really early tomorrow morning, or, well, late tonight.”

“Married?! There’s no way you’re nineteen!”

“Well I’m the younger one by a few years, so it’s not too bad.” Taemin laughed.

“How old is she? Is she really pretty?” The boy asked, tilting his head.

“Um… well…” There was definitely hesitation in his answer. It annoyed Jongin that being gay wasn’t something you could openly tell strangers, that Taemin had to watch his wording when talking about the person he loved.

“Just tell them, hyung.” He urged the elder on.

Nodding, he sighed. “Twenty one and um… I don’t know if ‘pretty’ is my preferred word of choice… Do you know the other model I did the shoot with? The other guy?”

“Yes!” One of the girls squealed, fanning herself, “He’s so attractive, oh my god.”

                “He’s my husband.” Taemin mumbled.

“You’re full of surprises…” One of them managed, wide eyed.

“W-wait, so you’re gay?” The boy asked, getting slapped on the arm by one of the girls, “Obviously! Don’t ask stupid questions!”

                “S-sorry!”

Jongin fished his phone out of his, casually slipping it into Taemin’s line of sight, flashing the time. They took a lot longer than Taemin anticipated.

“It’s okay, don’t worry about it. Um, we should get going. Since I’m leaving for tomorrow, I have to cook a week’s worth of meals for him.” He smiled, reaching back to pat Jongin’s shoulder.

“Right, of course! We’re so sorry!” They all bowed.

This was a very strange interaction. Seriously, he wasn’t famous.

“Do you mind if we get a picture so that we can brag to our friends?”

                “Sure.”

Escaping Jongin’s grasp, he moved over to the three, watching as they made space for him in the middle. All of them got their phones out snapping picture after picture. Taemin felt a bit surprised when the boy’s hand landed on his lower back, but he relaxed.

Finally, when the clicking of the digital shutters stopped, he made his way back over to Jongin, feeling the weight of the younger boy hanging over him.

“Thank you for everything,” They bowed again, “We hope to work with you in the future and we hope you have a great honeymoon!”

Taemin and Jongin bowed back, and within moments, the two groups separated.

Leaning in as the blonde got the last ingredients, Jongin kissed the smooth skin right beside his lips.

“That guy was a ert.” He mumbled.

“Jongin, don’t be rude!” Taemin scolded in return, slapping the boy’s arm.

“I swear, he was checking you out the whole time! I mean… well, I don’t know, he just kept looking you up and down. Besides, the way he held you when you took photos, don’t you think that was a bit close for strangers?”

Sighing, they headed towards the cash register. “Who knows, I’ m sure he’s a decent guy. Now come on, let’s hurry up and get home.”

It was later at night, after hours of cooking and baking, that the two could finally enjoy their evening together.

They were in their pajamas, finding a movie.

“Play with my hair.” Taemin yawned as he laid his head down in the younger boy’s lap, flipping through their large but not large enough selection of movies.

                “Your hair?”

                “Yup.”

“Like this?” He teased, leaning closer and nibbling on the blonde’s ear.

“No! I don’t want you to eat me! Braid my hair or something! Geez!”

They wrestled for a bit, completely forgetting the task at hand. It didn’t end either, not until Taemin managed to get on top of Jongin, pinning him and his travelling hands to the bed.

“Why are you so useless?!  I just wanted you to play with my hair and you end up eating my face!”

“Fine, fine, fine…” He pouted. Sitting up, Taemin slid off of him, returning to their proper spots. Jongin wasn’t finished playing though. While the younger boy helped himself to popcorn, Jongin made sure to steal every piece.

“You really don’t want to watch a movie, do you?” The blonde asked, eyebrow raised.

“Today’s our last evening together for a week, so… pay attention to only me, okay?”

                “Okay.”

                “You know what?”

                “What?”

“I’d be jealous if I was those people earlier today.”

                “The group?”

                “Yeah.”

                “Why?”

“Because all they see if a photoshopped you in a few photos. I get to see the , unedited, too perfect for reality version.”

Taemin laughed. “That’s stupid. It doesn’t matter.”

“It does to me. Minho was always ahead of me, but now I’m the one ahead of someone else. Isn’t that great?”

“Whatever you say Jongin.” They shared a smile.

Tossing the blankets over both of them,  Jongin grew playful, tickling the blonde.

Taemin ignored his phone which buzzed moments later.

He’d see the stream of messages including dozens of photos from someone identifying as ‘Kevin Woo from the supermarket earlier’ the next morning. Right now, Jongin was his top priority.

After all, a message from a ‘fan’ he met that day couldn’t possibly be too important.

It’s not like anything could come of it.

“Taemin,” Jongin whispered, “I’ll miss you.”

“Jongin,” Taemin whispered, “I’ll miss you too.”

Chapter 108: Dude, why am I just reading this now?! I... It feels weird that this is the end. It was so lovely and woah I can't believe how much you put into this story. Even though I wasn't here from the very start, I still feel how big a deal this is. I'll miss it too. I can imagine how different things will be now that you're finished and won't have the same routine, but don't feel sad. I think relief is a better option lol now you have this work to look back on while writing new things ^^ congratulations on seeing this through and being so consistent bc wow man, that was quite a schedule. I hope you'll continue to contribute more stories to the fandom (particularly 2min) haha good luck :) <3
