Chapter 101

False Awakening

Reaching over for a packet of sugar, Taemin tore it open, emptying it out into the elder’s cup.

                “Thank you…” Kevin blushed.

“You know, you don’t have to be so polite and shy around me. You’re my hyung after all.”

                “But you’re… well you know, you’re a model and I’m just a photographer…”

                “What’s your point?”

Kevin didn’t have one, so he shrugged, embarrassed. “Well thank you so much for coming today.”

“I like modelling for you.” He smiled.

“But are you okay with going out right after? I mean you’ll probably be tired, right?”

“I said it’s fine. Besides, all those girls want to go meet Minho, right?”

“Right… are you okay with that? I mean, they all think he’s really hot and really single.”

This time it was Taemin’s turn to shrug, indifferent. “I don’t mind. They can look him up and down all they want. He’s a married man, my married man, and knowing that I landed such a popular guy inflates my ego a little bit.” He chuckled.

Kevin admired them. For a lot of things. For how in love they were, how much trust they put in each other, how happily they could live. He envied them for all of that as well. He didn’t know what he would do for a relationship like that. Stare captured by the pink elastic band that kept Taemin’s golden locks in a ponytail on the top of his head, he laughed. “You’re really cute.”

“I hope so. You know, modelling is the only way I make an income. I put every single penny into the rent, groceries, anything else we might need. Besides that, I’m just a university student.”

“You work really hard, you know?” Kevin asked, receiving his cup from the younger boy and taking his first sip. Taemin really did nail it.

                “Thank you, hyung.”

Enjoying their short break, they relaxed as much as they could before getting back to work, poses accompanied by a camera shutter. Taemin would hold a position, have his picture taken, have his hair and makeup touched up, and repeat.

It was only minutes before they finished up, an hour later, that the door swung open. Kevin only needed to watch the transition between Taemin’s expressions to know who it was.

“Hey, keep your pose!” The blonde was scolded by the intruder, head snapping back to where it was before within seconds. When the final photo was taken and he got a confirmative nod from the photographer, he skipped off of the stage and into his husband’s welcoming arms. “There we go, baby. Don’t be unprofessional, okay? Act like you do when I photograph you.”

“You know,” Kevin interrupted, “I actually think that may have been the best one so far.” He confessed, bringing the camera over, one of Taemin’s many pictures on the screen. The one taken in that brief moment of realization when his eyes met those of the person he loved. “I guess you bring out the best in him.” Kevin chuckled, “I’m jealous.”

“It’s not difficult to. Whenever I come along, he knows he’s going to get food. That’s the secret to his happiness and the key to his heart, you know?”

“Not true!” Taemin argued, pinching the elder’s side, “Why are you such a bully?”

“Why are you so easy to tease?” Minho shot back, sneaking a peck on the lips in the process, “Now let’s go get you cleaned up. You don’t want to go meet a group of people looking like you just came out of a music video, do you?”

“Yes.” The blonde made a remark, having his nose pinched, being led off to the changing rooms.

“Kevin, you clean up here, I’ll take care of this one here. It’ll save time.”

“Thank you.” The boy bowed, working on just that. Watching the couple walk away, he sighed. They really were a power couple. He wanted to date someone that would bring out the best in him like that.

Glancing over the photos, he sighed.

The door opened behind him and he could hear a pair of growingly familiar heels clicking his way before two thin arms latched around one of his. “Hi.” A sweet voice greeted.

                “Hey…”

“How are you? Did you finish your shoot?”

                “Yeah…”

She kissed him on the cheek, interlocking their fingers. He couldn’t help but to tilt his head away, hand not fitting hers very comfortably.

By now, Taemin and Minho were back, Taemin switching from leather and latex to a loose fitting tee shirt that looked like it could be his husbands, and jeans which sat rolled up to his ankles. The pair noticed her, bowing. She bowed back.

“Hey, um, this is my girlfriend…” Kevin explained, the girl smiling to confirm it.

“Nice to meet you.” She waved.

They exchanged waves and handshakes, acquainting themselves with one another.

“I didn’t know you had a girlfriend!” Taemin confessed, fixing the stray hairs on his hair sprayed head.

“Sorry, it just never came up.”

                “That’s okay, let’s get going.”

They made their way to join another group, one with four other guys and six other girls. With seven of each gender, they headed for the subway, riding into downtown. While they all got to know each other, or, well, the girls got to know Minho, Taemin couldn’t help but notice how stiff Kevin seemed while his girlfriend interacted with him. Maybe he was just shy. Maybe it was just strange to him because he didn’t hesitate when it came to kissing Minho, hugging Minho, and honestly, doing anything with Minho anywhere at any time, even though they were gay. But they were different people and had different comfort zones.

It still looked a bit off though.

When they headed for the restaurant, the couple separated as she joined the girls and he lagged behind. Leaving Minho to the women, Taemin slowed his pace drastically, falling in line with the elder.

                “Is everything okay?”

                “Huh?” Kevin asked, confused.

“I know it’s none of my business, but you look a little off. I just wanted to make sure everything was okay.”

                “Y-yeah, everything’s totally fine!”

“Are you shy?” He snorted, their hands brushing up against each other.

                “Wh-what?”

“I don’t mean to disrespect you hyung, but you’re really shy around her, aren’t you? It’s cute.”

He swallowed, shrugging. Now was when Taemin began second guessing himself, but there wasn’t any time to improve on his first assumption as they all took seats around the table, menus in front of them. Taemin and Minho sat on opposite sides, the elder surrounded by all the girls, or at least as many as could fit oh his bench.

The blonde smirked, noticing how little space Minho had. The elder raised his eyebrow in return, matching the expression. Before he knew it, their legs were twisted around one another, hidden beneath the tabletop.

Leaving his husband to the others, he rested his head on Kevin’s shoulder, peeking over at the elder’s menu. “What are you getting?”

“Probably… kimchi stew. I got kind of cold on the way here so I want to warm up.”

“I was thinking about that too. Do you maybe want to share-”

“Hey oppa,” The girl suddenly interrupted, “Let’s split some jajangmyeon.”

“Sorry, I promised to share some kimchi stew with Taemin!” He instantly replied, sounding apologetic.

“Oh… okay then.” The girl mumbled, turning away to someone else, giving them the same offer.

“Are you sure?” Taemin asked. At this point, he was sure something was wrong.

                “Yeah, I am.”

Minho really seemed and felt like a celebrity. He’d never gotten this much attention while just casually eating dinner with a group of friends, although this wasn’t technically a group of friends.

“So do you two live together?” One of them asked, referring to the husbands that looked like coworkers.

“Yes. We’ve live together for… more than two years for sure.”

“Oh wow, so you guys must be very close!”

“We are. Very close.” Minho assured all of them, throwing the blonde a shady glance. Taemin reciprocated it, adding a wink on top of it all.

“How did you two meet?” Another one asked.

“He saved me from getting his by a car.” Taemin answered this time, causing all the girls to swoon over Minho’s masculinity, and how princely that was, and how that’s exactly what a real man would do. All the other guys cringed. They were either annoyed and jealous of the child genius who was years younger in age but years ahead in his photography studies, or they were annoyed at finding out how shallow the girls truly were.

From the corner of his eye, Taemin noticed some movement, watching Kevin mutter something about going to the bathroom and standing up. Following the elder’s lead, Taemin decided to join him, adding an, “I’ll tag along too.”

Leaving the loud group, they made their way down a silent hallway, eyes met with the globally recognized man and woman, each marking their own door.

Walking in, they headed for the urinals, or at least Taemin did, because Kevin slowed down, turning away towards the sink.  “You go first…” He cleared his throat.

“First?” Taemin asked, “There’s more than one. You know, I’m not embarrassed or anything, we can go at the same time. There are four, so we can put one or two between us.”

                “Please just go first…”

Shrugging, Taemin ped his jeans, pulling himself out and relaxing, easing into the relief.

Finishing up quickly, the mood a little awkward, he walked over to where Kevin was standing, smacking the soap dispenser with his palm and washing his hands. He really wanted to know what was on the elder’s mind, not because he was curious or invasive, but just because he was worried. Still, he asked a few times and Kevin clearly didn’t want to talk about it so that was that. Finishing up, he watched the elder mimic his process, finishing at the sink as well.

                “Taemin…”

                “Yes?”

“How did you figure out you were gay?”

Taken by surprised by the question, he wondered that himself. “Um, it wasn’t like a single, ‘oh, I’m gay’, you know? It was like… I started wondering if Minho liked me as much as I liked him and what it would be like to kiss him. I don’t think it’s about if I’m gay or straight… like, in my head, I might not even be gay, I just love Minho. I only love Minho. I love him as a person and gender plays no part in it. He might see it differently, but that’s how I think of it. I mean, I don’t know, his male counterparts aren’t necessarily a bad thing.”

“Did you ever… have a time where you, like, doubted it? Or, well… were unsure?”

“Umm…” Taemin slurred, digging through long lost feelings, “Yeah, I guess. Why?”

“Taemin, I’m confused...” The elder suddenly confessed, “I always thought I was straight, like, really straight. But ever since I first saw you in that advertisement, I thought you were drop dead gorgeous and I became a huge fan. I also thought you were a girl, you know? Then when I found out you were a guy, I felt really weird because I still thought you were really attractive… I’m dating a girl now, obviously, but I’m not attracted to her at all. It sounds really weird, but I think you and even Minho are more my type… I’ve never found guys attractive before and- ugh, I just don’t know!”

“I don’t think you’re gay.” Taemin laughed underneath his breath. Kevin was surprised by the blunt and immediate answer, wondering if that’s really what he wanted to hear after just suddenly pouring his heart out to a friend in a public bathroom.

“Is it like… a sixth sense to gay people?”

“No, it’s just open-mindedness. It’s okay for guys to find other guys attractive. That’s not being gay, that just knowing what looks good and what doesn’t. You might not think your girlfriend is attractive, but you might think I am. That doesn’t mean you’re gay, that might just mean I might suit your visual preferences more than she does. It has nothing to do with ual preference.”

That sort of made sense, but it still bothered him. How could he go from completely indifferent to other men to deciding which guy he thought was attractive and which guy wasn’t? Taemin could see the anxiety pouring out of the elder’s pores, giving him a reassuring smile. “I honestly don’t think your gay, Kevin. You might be biual or something along those lines and I doubt that too, but you’re not gay.”

Given food for thought, Kevin nodded, starting out unsure but finishing with a strong, confident nod. “Yeah. Thank you, Taemin. I was really worried. Maybe I shouldn’t be dating my girlfriend. You know, I don’t really like her. I guess I was just freaking out about all this when she came along and I figured that this would prove something.”

“People do that a lot.” The blonde confirmed, fitting his hand around the elder’s. “Let’s go back now, okay? We’re probably missing out on the flirtatious exchange between Minho and all the girls.”

In a noticeably better mood then before, the pair left the bathroom, bumping into a familiar face.

“Hey honey.” Taemin smiled. An older boy smiled back just as brightly before gifting the blonde with a tight hug and a kiss.

“Kitten, don’t leave me alone for more than you have to.” Minho whined, a pout on the lips that were showered with multiple kisses as Taemin snuck an apology in between breaths.

Appreciative of all Taemin had done for him, Kevin nodded in their direction, waving. “Alright, well I’ll leave you two to a few seconds of privacy. Oh, and thanks again Taemin. See you guys back at the table.”

As the boy turned the corner, leaving them to their own agenda, the elder raised an eyebrow. “Thank you for what? You disappeared to the bathroom suddenly for some favours? Something I should know about?”

The blonde giggled, burying his face in the older boy’s neck. “Nothing you need to worry about, Minho. Just a little verbal exchange between friends.”

                “About?”

“How in love with you I am.”

                “Liar.”

“Truther.” Taemin smiled, stealing a nibble from Minho’s shoulder. “You’re wearing this?” He marvelled, feeling the indent of a ring against his back. “Haven’t they asked about it yet?”

“Mm… maybe they don’t want to know? Who knows? None of them brought it up. But let’s not talk about them for a little bit. You know, I’m a little jealous and bummed out.”

“Why’s that, baby?” Taemin asked, Minho’s hands on his waist, leading him back to the room he just came out of.

“You’ve been keeping to yourself this whole time, you know? Well maybe not to yourself, but you’ve been giving all your attention to Kevin and the other guys while leaving me all alone.”

“Do you want me to be jealous?” The younger boy asked, chuckling as Minho’s fingers fumbled around with his.

“No. You don’t have anything to be jealous of, but that doesn’t mean I don’t want a little attention…”

“But baby, you get so much attention from the girls that I don’t have any wiggle room.”

                “I’ll make some!”

“We can have some alone time afterwards, you know? All these girls came for you, so why don’t you treat them like little princesses for a bit?”

“You’re my little princess. My only little princess.” The boy smiled, squeezing Taemin in a tight hold. They spun in circles inside the tiny bathroom, ignoring the inappropriate circumstances.

“Well then take your little princess back to the table, sit your little princess down, share some of your food with your little princess so that they can become your big princess…”

Snorting, Minho locked his finger around the blonde’s, sealing the promise.

                “Hey, guess what?”

                “What?”

Taemin laughed, pinching the boy’s sides, “Kevin thinks you’re hot.”

                “What?” Minho repeated.

“He wanted to talk because he was freaking out that he may be gay because he thought we were hot. He’s not gay though.”

“Okay, well your choice of wording .” The elder sighed, shaking his head. “You should have said the second part before that first.”

“Ah, but where would the fun and surprise be in that?” Taemin teased.

“We don’t need that kind of surprise. I thought that was going to quickly escalate.”

Sneaking a final pinch, he tugged on Minho’s shirt, nodding in the door’s direction. “Hey, let’s get back. They’re probably missing you.”

As their verbal exchange grew silent, they heard the familiar voices of a few girls out in the hallway, the door next to theirs opening and closing within seconds.

“Oh, we better hurry up,” Minho began, “I think that was them. If we go now, we should be able to get to the table ahead of them and you can sit beside me. Is that okay?”

                “That’s okay.” Taemin smiled.

“Promise me you’ll talk to me. Don’t just sit there super quiet and polite… And eat my food. Share with me instead of Kevin. Deal?”

                “Deal.”

                “A kiss for the road?”

“A kiss for the road.” He laughed, lips pressing against lips as eyes closed. It was rushed but sweet.

They returned to their table moments later, and as Minho had predicted, the girls has all chosen to go to the bathroom as a group, leaving the side of the table Minho was sitting on completely empty.

Letting Taemin slip in first, he followed, trapping the boy between himself and the wall.

Naturally, when the girls returned, finding out some of them would have to give up their spots near their person of interest, they whined and pouted. Minho played it off though, keeping each one of them satisfied.

They continued their feast until late in the night when Taemin grew drowsy, head leaning on the elder’s shoulder, stabbing his chopsticks into his food repetitively to confirm his consciousness. That’s when Minho decided it was time to pack up and go home.

“Thank you for the evening everyone, but my and Taemin will be heading home! How much do we owe?” He asked, fishing out his wallet along with a few bills.

“Aw, stay a little longer Oppa! Or at least give us your number! We can play around again sometime!” They began, clapping their hands at the idea.

“Oh come on, I can’t do that.” He stated, earning lots of sad expression, “I have to stay mysterious somehow, don’t I? You’ll see me around the campus and when you do, say hi, okay?” He offered his stunning smile, handing his money over to Kevin.

                “Oppa, don’t be stingy!”

“I’m sorry,” Minho laughed, “I have someone very important to me and although they wouldn’t mind me giving out my number, I don’t want to do it, keeping them in mind.” He explained, lifting Taemin onto his feet and shimmying out from the group.

All the girls seemed taken aback by the statement as it registered in their head that they never had a chance to begin with.

“Good night!” Both of them waved. Waiting until they were near the doors, they linked hands, assuming they were out of view. Little did they know, they were a few seconds too early, exposing everything they could have to the group by the end of the night.

Kevin watched the groups surprised expressions, laughing to himself.

A/N: Thank you so much for sticking along 100 chapters, especially since I intended for this story to be no more than 60! I really appreciate all your support and love. I've grown attached to this story for I'm glad even 1 person deems it readable! Also, I'm sorry for the crappy chapters recently(if not always). I've had so many essays to do for school on books I hate and subjects I dislike that I've kinda had a serious writer's block and am really struggling to update. I hope you don't mine. Sorry :(

Thank you!

Chapter 108: Dude, why am I just reading this now?! I... It feels weird that this is the end. It was so lovely and woah I can't believe how much you put into this story. Even though I wasn't here from the very start, I still feel how big a deal this is. I'll miss it too. I can imagine how different things will be now that you're finished and won't have the same routine, but don't feel sad. I think relief is a better option lol now you have this work to look back on while writing new things ^^ congratulations on seeing this through and being so consistent bc wow man, that was quite a schedule. I hope you'll continue to contribute more stories to the fandom (particularly 2min) haha good luck :) <3
