Chapter 1: Opportunities are Hard to Pass Up
Unwillingly Yours
She was 20 years old, around the height of 5'4'' with long dark red hair and ice blue eyes, and she was curvy. It was these aspects of her that caused her to once again be jobless with another restraining order under her belt against fantasy crazed employers.
"Damnit Kyra, out of a job again." She muttered as she walked down the city streets towards her apartment complex.
"Men are so disgusting; I should have just gone to college so I wouldn't be in these situations time after time again." Kyra wanted to cry. She felt disappointed with herself even if it wasn't her fault she ended up in this situation time and time again. She didn't provoke the home owners, but that’s what she got for working in upper class neighborhoods, there was always something wrong with the people living there. Sighing softly she turned to the glass door of the apartment complex's entrance and proceeded to enter. She lived on the fifth floor and often walked the flights easily, but today she felt so heavy and burdened that she could barely stand and wait for the elevator doors to open. The ride up felt never-ending as she reflected on her current situation. She would need to once again apply for employment, but word was getting out about her and many people were turning her down, some because they took advantage of their employees and wanted only those that wouldn't fight back and ruin their reputations, and others because the wives thought she threw themselves at her. As Kyra got to her home, apartment 5E, she reached in her hoodie pocket for her keys, but the jingling must have alerted her mom, because before she could try and open the door, her mother flung it open and dragged her now stunned daughter inside.
"M-Mom, are you okay?!" She gripped her mother’s shoulders tightly in concern giving her a once over to make sure nothing was wrong.
"Yes yes, but there was something in the mail for you and I have been waiting anxiously for you to get home ever since" Her mother loosed herself from Kyra's grip and hurried over to the kitchen table which had two pieces of paper.
"Read this." Her mom said while holding onto the smaller paper.
Kyra grabbed it and began to read its contents out loud; it was a formal letter of some sort.
"To the Parents/Guardians of Kyra Jenkins-" She was cut off by her mom who snatched it from her and flipped it over.
"Not that side, this one."
"Oh." She blushed sheepishly. And cleared before continuing.
"Dear, Ms. Jenkins, We are interested in your housekeeping services, and have heard some positive things about your services. Your credentials and experience match up with what it is we are looking for. Enclosed in this letter is a check. Consider it a down payment, if you choose to work with us." she stopped reading and glanced over at her mother’s hands curiously.
"Hmm... sounds a bit suspicious I doubt they would even be offering much to make me consider..."She grabbed the check from her mom’s hands and turned it around. All she could do was go wide eyed and gasp.
"Mom. Did you...”
Her mother ran to her and hugged her tightly. "Kyra yes! 50,000 dollars. It’s real!"
"There is just no way. Mom if this is just a down payment; can you imagine how much I would be making?! I could finally move you out of here and get you a place of your own, you know like how we always talked about? A house by the ocean away from the craziness of the city." She pictured it and felt so much joy. Kyra never saw a check with that many zeros in her life, and maybe it was a little sad, but she was clinging onto anything positive.
"Ah yes...about that. Keep reading." All of a sudden silence. Her mother released her from her embrace and Kyra continued reading.
"Our residence is located in a private gated estate in South Korea. We hope to hear from you soon. Regards, Mr. Kim." Her heart stopped and dropped into the pit of her stomach.
"What? South...Korea? There...There is no way I could even-" Her mother cut her off.
"Kyra this is not only a big opportunity to make a lot of money for yourself, but it’s also an opportunity to experience something new and travel somewhere across the world. There is no way I am letting you pass up something like this. If it doesn't end up working out, it doesn't." Kyra stared oddly at her mother.
"Mom. What about you? I don't want to leave you here alone." She couldn't picture doing such a thing.
"Don't you worry about me dear, I will be fine and you know it. I'm not that old. I'm barely past fifty. You do what you need to do." She winked and Kyra couldn’t help but smile at her mother’s spunkiness. She thought about it again as she stared at the check. It looked legit. It was a lot of money, and she could really help out with making a better life for the two of them. Plus once she saved up enough over there, she would quit and come back over here and give herself and her mom the things they have wanted for so long.
"Okay mom I’ll do it. I'll take the job, I promise to call, write, Skype...whatever it is I need to do until I can visit. I promise." Her mom seemed a little saddened by her words but perked right up moments after. “Actually I was hoping you would say yes, and I have already packed your things. Well most of them." She said sheepishly. Kyra couldn't help but be taken aback by this. "What? Mom seriously?" She laughed whole-heartedly. "You’re too much mom, but before we get ahead of ourselves, let’s see if this baby is real!"
